One hundred Khet Udomsak residents underwent training
to become the city’s latest civil defense volunteers.
Sattahip District Chief Chaichan Iamcharoen opened
the three-day course at Khet Udomsak City Hall Aug. 17. Training focused
on the roles and responsibilities of civil defense volunteer squads,
which were created by the Interior Ministry with the goal of getting 1
out of 50 Thai nationals to train how to assist police and rescue
officials during disasters.
Deputy Mayor Suphachai Nimanong said the city has
trained four generations of volunteers for a total of 269. Some current
volunteers joined in this month’s program to get some retraining.
Prospective volunteers did both theoretical and
practical exams and heard lectures from officials including Chonburi
Council member Thaweesuk Nimanong and representative from the Division
of Public Health and Environment and Royal Thai Marine Corps.
Chaichan said Thailand has faced an increasing number
of natural and man-made disasters so it was important for the government
to get out the message that public officials cannot handle every
situation themselves and that the country needs qualified, trained
volunteers to assist in some circumstances.
