Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Tui, Wade, Morn,
Ralph & Sue.
Snow Bowler took three points from second place Brother D
and will be very hard to catch with only two weeks remaining in this league
and only eight points up for grabs. Aht Johansson led Snow Bowler with a 516
series and Wade Meyers bowled a 202 game. Ralph was best for Brother D with
a 203 game and 548 series.
All three bowlers for Canada bowled over 500 series and
they won all four points from Green Tree moving them into third place. Lek
Reaper and Pao Orawan both had 543 series and Tue Pettae had a 527 for
Canada.
Bavaria remains in fifth place after winning all four
points from U.S. Marine Corps. Sue Murphy, USMC, bowled best in this match
with a 202 game and even 500 series.

Pluemkamon had a 550 series to lead VFW Post 9876 to a four point win over
Caf้ Kronborg.
Morn Mack bowling as a Pacer had a 218 game and 542
series.
Fitzgerald shoots fab 38 in tough conditions
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Friday’s winners Keith Buchanan and Jon Goddard
with John Player
(third in Div B).
Monday, August 15, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
The rain in Pattaya put a number of players off today and
as we approached Khao Kheow, negative thoughts regarding the weather and the
possibility of no play were abundant as dark clouds loomed up and clung on
threateningly to the surrounding hill tops. Nevertheless, the 18 Outbackers
set about their daunting task of tackling the B & C nines, in what were some
very soggy conditions.
Out in front of us and off to a very early start was the
“Rabbi’s Bar” group, who maintained a very good pace throughout. By the time
our leading groups reached the ninth hole the rain came, as did the thunder
and lightning and everybody quite rightly chose to shelter until it passed
through.
John Fitzgerald had 21 points at this stage and his
thoughts must have been whether or not half the field would finish to make
it a tournament; but after about 40 minutes the weather improved enough to
play, with a light drizzle which eventually fizzled out after about another
thirty minutes. The fairways were extremely waterlogged and needless to say,
we played preferred lies but it was still difficult to strike the ball
cleanly. The greens stood up extremely well but they were slow but that is
probably down to the bad weather during recent days making them impossible
to cut.
It’s good to report that John maintained his round
finishing with a brilliant 38 points on a day when the CSA (similar to CSS)
was three shots tougher than par, to win by four from one of Capt’ Bob’s
good mates, Brent Dalby on 34, with Nev Steward taking third with 31.
There was just one ‘2’ from Suzi on the short (for her
anyway) B3, for the rest of us it was the best part of a 200yd shot; however
it was a very good downhill putt from just off the green.
1st John Fitzgerald (17/Hi16.2)
38pts
2nd Brent Dalby (20/Hi18.6) 34pts
3rd Nev Steward (23/Hi21.5) 31pts
4th Keith Buchanan (17/Hi16) 29pts
Tuesday, August 16,
Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Pattaya Country Club escaped the worst of the rain on
Monday and today, although very wet and the carts were restricted to cart
paths only, it was a rain free day and a pleasant temperature. 12 Outbackers
in three four-balls set out getting away on time with very few other players
to be seen anywhere on the course.
The greens were excellent and quite quick and most of the
fairways, particularly on the drier back nine, were in very good shape.
Today was Terry’s day, as he recorded a five shot win
over the returning Paul Smets, with a great 41 points to Paul’s 36; back in
third was the General on 33, who picked up nine points on the last three
holes.
There was only one ‘2’ from Geoff Moodie on the twelfth.
1st Terry Marney (27/Hi26.4) 41pts
2nd Paul Smets (22) 36pts
3rd Jack Moseley (15/Hi14.9) 33pts
4th Dennis Persson (15/Hi15.2)
32pts
Wednesday, August 17,
Burapha – Stableford
On a day of excellent scoring reducing the CSA (CSS) by
one shot less than par (i.e. 37pts), the 26 Outbackers made hay in the
excellent conditions here at Burapha on the C & D nines from the white tees.
Jim Brackett, playing his first game for some time,
demonstrated his golfing prowess with a one over par 73 gross, to
comfortably win Division A by three with 40 points, from excellent rounds by
John Cunningham and Paul Bourke both with 37 and Burapha member, Tony
Garnett back in fourth on 36.
Bryce Stick, who improved upon his 17 points on Monday
with 28 points on Tuesday, went all the way to the top of Div B with a fine
39 points today to earn himself nearly a one shot handicap cut. He was
followed home by another Aussie visitor, Phil Waite (38pts) as Tommy Jensen
and Kissy Buchanan filled the minor places both on 35.
There were seven ‘2’s; Jim Brackett & Tony McDonough on
C5, David Stynes on C8, Paul Bourke & John Fitzgerald on D2 and finally Jim
Brackett again on D8 and John Cunningham also on D8.
Div A (0–16)
1st Jim Brackett (5/Hi5.6) 40pts
2nd John Cunningham (8/Hi7.7) 37pts
3rd Paul Bourke (12/Hi11.6) 37pts
4th Tony Garnett (9/Hi9.2) 36pts

2nd Phil Waite (17/Hi16.5) 38pts
3rd Tommy Jensen (18/Hi17.6) 35pts
4th Keith Buchanan (17/Hi16.1)

Friday, August 19, Green
Valley – Stableford
Thirty-three Outbackers here on a course that was
presented in beautiful condition and always a popular venue. Welcome to Jon
Goddard on one of his visits from KL and congrats to him for winning Div A
off a handicap of 5 with 37 points, welcome also to Graham Holmes on a quick
visit, generously handicapped off 8 who also scored 37 points. Four further
back on 33 was Paul Bourke just beating his good friend, Paul Greenaway (32)
into third place.
Div B went to the inform “Kissy” Buchanan, who managed to
find the course this week; well done for finding it and also to winning with
a fine, top score of the day, 41 points; and welcome to your new handicap of
14.6. Phil Gough hasn’t played with the Outback for a long time and he
returned in great style taking second with 40, ahead of John Player (36),
who returns to Aus this weekend.
A popular winner in Div C was “Pottsy”, who has been out
in the wilderness for a while through injury but at long last he’s got his
act together to score 39 points to win by four over Geoff Kubas (35) who was
supposed to be at Greenwood but played with us instead.
There were four ‘2’s today; from Phil Gough on hole 4, Ed
Horrocks on hole 12 and Suzi and Brian Maddox both got ‘2’s on hole 16.
Note: Next week we have been advised that we shall be at
St. Andrews as Green Valley is busy, but the rates will remain the same.

The Kevins’ Day
PSC Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Group

Tuesday’s top three with the staff at the Relax
Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, August 16
Phoenix golf course is now back to (almost) superb
condition. Congratulations. Anyone can now come to Phoenix and say that they
have had good value for money. The condition of the course must have been an
inspiration for many players this week with scores very high.
The highest was 42 points scored by Kevin Callaghan,
followed closely with 38 points by Kevin Bird. In third place with a very
respectable 36 points was the ever consistent Clive Robinson.
Near pins went to: Bob Rasmussen, John Bartley, Eamon
Murtagh & Stuart Gordon.
After all these prizes were awarded at the Relax Bar the
rest of the group looked forward to the lucky draw and the Free massage was
won by yours truly with the free drink going to young Dodd Gordon and the
last prize going to Sergio Volpi.
Next week we play an ordinary Stableford and the week
after we play our end of the month stroke play competition for the
prestigious Trattoria Italiana voucher award.
Last Saturday’s fishing trip was highly successful with
some fine sized fish caught for the dinner table. The next scheduled trip is
10th September or anyone can charter the boat privately for their own party
any day of the week.
For either golf or fishing call me on 087 091 7565.

Dale Murphy earns top
spot at Pattaya CC
Three Sisters Golf

Dale Murphy and Joe St.
Laurent.
Paul E. Donahue
The sun was out and the Pattaya Country Club course was
in good shape this 17th of August. A smaller than usual field teed off
around 7 a.m. Maybe some of last week’s players were still drying out from
last week’s rain.
Dale Murphy came in with 41 points followed by Joe St.
Laurent with a 34. Fortunately for Joe his wife was not playing this week.
The usual snacks were available and lots of penalty cash
was on the table to cover beverages. Hot dogs were the fare of the day.
Smith takes low gross at 108th PSC monthly tourney

Sign in here.
Friday August 19 - Greenwood
Greenwood was this month’s choice for the August Pattaya
Sports Club members monthly tournament. There were 67 participants – and it
would have been 71 had not a group of 4 gone to Green Valley by mistake!
Arriving at the clubhouse players were welcomed by Golf
Chairman Joe Mooneyham ably assisted by Bob Linborg and Steve Mann.
The weather could not have been better, cloudy and
pleasantly warm. The course was its usual immaculate self and one comment
heard was, ‘if you cannot putt on these greens you cannot putt at all’.

Martin Todd, winner in A
Flight (left) with the PSC Golf
Chairman Joe Mooneyham.
Just 7 ladies today and two produced the best scores (40
and 44) beating all the chaps! It was good to see Paul Smith back today who
came in with the best gross of 77.
The presentation and buffet were at Lewiinski’s and once
again Colin and his team provided an excellent spread (always different) and
great service. After the buffet, and a few drinks, it was time for the
presentation.
Regular PSC Emcee Nigel Cannon introduced Golf Chairman
Joe Mooneyham who expressed his appreciation for the support from members
for today’s tournament. Nigel then announced the winners with Joe presenting
the prizes followed by the lucky draw – this month drawn by the day’s lady
winner Duan Butpanya.
This month’s 50/50 lucky draw winner, drawn by Joe was
Noi Emmerson who was accompanied by daughter Emily.
The next PSC Monthly is on Friday September 16 at Crystal
Bay –sign up at the PSC office.

The never ending story
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Peter
Henshaw, Lewiinski’s monthly medal winner.
Sunday, August 14, Green Valley - Medal
A Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (15) Net 66 Medal
Winner
2nd Ian Halfpenny (13) Net 70
3rd Bob Newell (9) Net 71
Ladies Flight
1st Kathy Doody (16) Net 71
Near Pins: No 4 Ian Halfpenny, No 9 Geoff Couch,
No 12 Jack Grindvold, No 16 Jan Eriksen.

Kathy Doody, Lewiinski’s
monthly medal winner in the Ladies Division.
I indicated last week that if I was a bit fitter and
younger I might have given the headlines to Peter Henshaw as he won two
games on the trot. Well this week there is no doubt that he gets the lights
as he posted a net 66 to win the third game in a row, but more importantly
took home the August monthly medal accompanied by a lead crystal Lewiinski’s
cut glass and a bottle of Jameson’s. Peter’s Net 66 was four points clear of
the entire field.
Ian ‘Loose change’ Halfpenny who is winning and placing a
couple of times every week collected the Silver with a steady Net 70. Bob
‘Marley’ Newell rounded out the Flight a further stroke back. Bob’s score
also gained him the coveted low gross trophy.
The big story in the Ladies Flight was Kathy Helga
Doody’s flight winning Net 71 which won her the ladies medal, a bottle of
plonk and a Lewiinski’s cut glass lead crystal champers flute. The fact that
there were only two ladies in the flight should not denigrate from this fine
effort. As all our regular readers now, Kathy joins Peter in the Gold Medal
to be held later in the year.
Ian Halfpenny, Ed Wyckoff and Jan Eriksen shared the 2’s
pot.
The society would like to take this opportunity to wish
Jimmy ‘the ladies man’ Day and Leck (or Pui!) all the best on their
forthcoming wedding.
Tuesday, August 16, Khao
Kheow B&C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (15) 30pts
2nd Ed Wyckoff (10) 29pts
Was there a party somewhere on Monday that the scribe did
not get to know about? Perhaps it was the lads celebrating Jimmy’s
engagement. Whatever it was it put the kybosh on the day’s scoring. Eddy the
Eagle was top man with a best on the day 30 points.
The silver needed the aid of the calculator as Ed the
‘Senator Dallas tea party’, Jan ‘the quiet one’ and Bill ‘the monkey tamer’
Brochart were log jammed on 29 points. The Senator got the count back
verdict while Jan and Bill got to watch the presentation sitting on a bar
stool.
As you might have guessed no 2’s were recorded - rollover
on Wednesday.
Wednesday August 17,
Pattana - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob McPhail (16) 34pts
2nd Ed Wyckoff (10) 32pts
The competitive week was rounded off by Bob McPhail atop
the podium and as always was a welcome addition to the society. While 34
points will not always hold up for victory in Lewiinski’s, when it does it
is usually on a demanding and tricky course such as this Gussan designed
Pattana.
A familiar name stood just below Bob on the podium in the
person of Ed ‘The Senator Dallas Tea Party’ Wyckoff who was two shots of the
pace. This was Ed’s second successive silver placing.
No 2’s were recorded so a double rollover on Sunday.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in, and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Blair wins for second
week in a row
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, August 15,
Plutaluang – Stableford
Our first visit here after a few months lay off and
we were allocated the West and North courses but after a few discussions
with the starter we switched to the North and South courses which
pleased everyone.
The course has improved since our last visit here but
it is still not everyone’s favourite although the majority enjoyed the
day. There were only five groups out today and the cut in division 1 was
7-18 and 19 + in division 2.
Playing off 15 now, Neville Scurrell won division 1
with 37 points and always in the reckoning and winning on a back nine
count-back of 17/16, Chris Voller beat Bryan Rought after they both came
in with 33 points.
The organiser won division 2 with a meager 29 points
and in second place three points behind an 11/11 back nine was tied, an
8/8 on the back six was also shared, but finally Rod Howett beat Joe
Kubon 5/4 on the back three holes to take second.
Chris Voller birdied the fourth on the South course
to win the only ‘2’ in division 1 and there were 4 rollovers in division
2 to Pattaya Country Club.
Wednesday,
August 17,
Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
The numbers are creeping up slowly now, but this
could all change in the next few weeks. Six groups out today with the
first division cut at 7-18.
Playing off 17, Harry Vincenzi beat Ben Findon on a
20/17 back nine count-back as they both came in with 38 points. Tony
Thorne was third after beating Bryan Rought on a 19/18 count-back after
they both tied with 36 points, guess who was not a happy chappy?
The Welsh lad won division 2 with 33 points, well
done David Phillips, and another count-back for second saw three players
coming in with 30 points; Brian Kelly edged it with Jimmy Johnson third
and Gordon Everingham losing out on a 15/14/13 score on the back nine.
Only one ‘2’ today and it came in division 1 with
Tony Thorne birdying the 7th. In division 2 there
are now 4 rollovers to Treasure Hills on Monday.
Friday, August 19,
Eastern Star - Stableford
All the plans and the itinerary have been finalised
for the Chiang Mai trip on the 10th of next month, many thanks to Lyn
for this. We had 28 out today and an amazing cut of 7-15 in division The
weather here was very pleasant with a gentle breeze coming off the
coast.
After being cut last week from 17-15, Darryl Blair
won division 1 again with 38 points. Chris Voller was second on 34 and
Rioja Jon Lay came third one point behind after beating Don Head on a
18/15 count-back.
Don’s other half Miss Nut won the ladies division
with 36 points and in division 2 and playing off 17, Ted Morris took the
honors with 34 points ahead of Lee Casey in second on 33 and Ian Hart
losing out on a 17/14 count-back to finish third.
Near pins went to Chris Voller, Ted Morris, Jon Lay,
Joe Kubon, Paul Butler, Miss Kung Maliporn and Ya Riley
In the ‘2’s there was a warm welcome return for Wilf
Latham who birdied the 13th as did Mikael Andersson to share the pot in
division 1. Ted Morris birdied the third to take the rollovers in
division 2.

A bit damp at Pattana
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Allan, Yves & Martin discuss
golfing matters at Mulligans Lakeside after their rounds at Pattana.
Tuesday, August 16, Pattana - Skins
Tuesday saw some respite from the all day rain of Monday,
with our game at Pattana receiving no rain, despite it being a bit sodden on
some holes. The C & B combination was to be our test, in that order, from
the White tees.
Again we decided on skins as the format, with Yves off to
a quick start, but that was to be his only success as Allan and Jeff with 6
each showed the way, while Martin came good late to rack up 4 skins.
Thursday, August 18, The
Emerald – Skins
Thursday was a visit to Emerald, where the greens were
disappointing and it will be a few weeks before they are back to the
standard expected of this course. Scores were subsequently below standard by
all, however not all the blame could be apportioned to the greens.
Jeff led the way in the skins with 8, while Allan had 4,
Rob 3 & Steve 2.
Mulligans Lakeside continued to support the PSC Monthly
Tournament on Friday at Greenwood, sending the best part of 2 groups: Jeff
(6) & Dennis (15) secured runner up spots in A & B flights respectively,
with some technical prizes thrown in for good measure.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with presentation at the course Tuesday & Mulligans Lakeside
hosting on Thursdays. We continue to use the basic USGA handicap system, as
others use hybrids, prompting a rethink on course ratings, (the tail wagging
the dog, methinks)! Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to
see you there, cheers & good golfing!

The Admiral wins the battle at Pattaya Country Club
PSC golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Walter Baechli & The Admiral.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, August 15,
Plutaluang E & S - Stableford
There had been an early morning thunderstorm which maybe
prompted one regular “fair weather” golfer to SMS his cancellation but
thanks to a few late inclusions we had a field of 11 “all weather” players
ready to tackle the Plutaluang East & West nines. There should have been 12
of us but one “sick” golfer had maybe forgotten how to use his mobile phone
to inform us of his non-participation.

Dave Richardson receives his
Mug from Bjarne Neilson at the Cafe Kronborg.
Departing Cafe Kronborg just prior to our scheduled 0815
hrs we travelled to the course through drizzle and cloudy skies and it was
good to see Mike Winfield back with us after a month in New York. We arrived
at the Navy course 43 minutes later and although there were a few other
groups ready to tee off our first foursome was able to tee off 35 minutes
ahead of schedule at 0925 hrs on the East nine.
To be honest, the weather was not looking too promising
with low dark clouds and thunder rumbling in the distance and there were a
few showers during the first nine but not enough to cause too many problems.
The course was looking in fine shape and the greens, although a lot slower
than we had been used to for several weeks, were well maintained and true.
After two hours and fifteen minutes we commenced our
second nine (South) and it wasn’t too long before the rain was coming down
constantly. But although there was a constant requirement for the use of
brollies there was no necessity to cease play at any stage. We completed our
round in four hours and thirty-five minutes and the course held up extremely
well in the wet conditions.
We had just the one flight with the small field and there
were five place getters.
The winner was spotted having lessons on the weekend and
they obviously paid off for our good friend Walter Baechli who won with a
creditable 36 points, 2 points clear of Aussie Martin Todd in second place.
There was a three-way count back for the next three places with Mike
Winfield in third place finishing ahead of Andrew Krawiec in fourth place
and your writer in fifth - all with a modest 30 points.
1st Walter Baechli (18) 36pts
2nd Martin Todd (7) 34pts
3rd Mike Winfield (23) 30pts
4th Andrew Krawiec (19) 30pts
5th Peter Blackburn (11) 30pts
The Compass Cap was very well won by Mike Gosden who then
proceeded to get his revenge by parading Deefa the Dog who collected
numerous donations to charity from all present.
Thursday, August 18,
Pattaya Country Club - Monthly Mug/Stroke
The weather was looking good for a change and we had
twenty golfers signed up and prepared for our monthly round of stroke to
compete for the Cafe Kronborg August Monthly Mug.
Unfortunately, we had a late cancellation as we were
informed that Wayne Koch had suffered a badly injured shoulder in a
motorbike accident the previous day and we wish Wayne all the best and hope
he has a speedy recovery.
We welcomed back Mike Allidi from his trip to Australia
and Frenchman Jean-Claude Coulon and Chop Daprakhon. It was also great to
have the company of 83 year old Arthur Bailey once again for a game on his
home course.
We left Cafe Kronborg spot on our scheduled departure
time of 0815 hrs and just twenty-five minutes later arrived at the course.
Our booked tee time was 1006 hrs but as usual we were able to tee off early
after a brief delay and after re-organising the groups due to someone’s
inability to inform us of his non-appearance.
Our first group, a threesome, got away at 0915 hrs in
perfect golfing weather. As usual the course was in very good shape and the
greens were excellent. I must mention that we enjoyed a reduced fee of 800
baht for green fee plus caddy and an even better deal for those wishing to
use a cart, shared or otherwise.
The groups in front of us were not wasting any time and
we “flew” through the front nine in just one hour and forty-five minutes.
All three of us were playing quite well and I had a feeling that one of us
was going to feature prominently at the end of the day.
A welcome drinks break at the half way mark refreshed us
for the second nine and the three of us kept our heads down resulting in
some good golf. The round was completed in the excellent time of three hours
and forty-five minutes and a good time was had by all.
We had 2 flights, A Flight for 0 to 17 and B Flight for
handicaps of 18 and over plus the Monthly Mug winner and there were rewards
for longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth, kindly donated by Martin
Todd.
Former three time Mug winner Kenny Bernek was confident
of adding another one to his collection but unfortunately “crashed & burned”
to finish well off the pace.
The winner of the Cafe Kronborg August Monthly Mug was
none other than Dave “The Admiral” Richardson with a very fine score of net
68.
In the A Flight the other two members of our opening
threesome, Martin Todd and yours truly had to be separated by a count back
with Martin victorious, both of us with a net 70. Mike Gosden completed an
Aussie A Flight 1, 2, 3 by finishing third with a fine net 72 and Chop
Daprakhon edged out Stu (BUPA) Rifkin and finished fourth on a count back
with net 73.
B Flight was well won by the colorful Walter Baechli with
net 71 and Andrew Krawiec finished second with a net 77. Mike Winfield was
very surprised to have a place on the podium with his third place net 79 but
not as surprised as Jean-Claude Coulon who finished fourth with net 88 (not
a misprint!).
Many thanks once again to Bjarne and his family & staff
at Cafe Kronborg for their continued support of this monthly event.

crew.

Mike Gaussa handles the wet to win at Pleasant Valley
PSC Golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tom Cotton, Mike Gaussa and
Alan with one of Bert’s finest.
Tuesday, August 16, Pleasant Valley -
Stableford
What a miserable morning it was as we congregated a
Tropical Bert’s. Indeed the question on all lips was, would we be able to
play, as the weather forecast was not good at all. However as is usual in
these circumstances, after talking to the course, we made the brave decision
to go there and see how it played out.
The drive up there on Route 7 was wet as rain came down,
and as we approached Laem Chabang the road was blocked on both sides. As we
drew closer we saw a truck through the center of the road and facing us. Of
course traffic in both directions was doing their usual. Gawking. However,
we still reached a wet Pleasant Valley on time and noticed some work had
been carried out on the parking area and we could park in reasonable safety.
Booking in, the concern was whether we could play, but by
this time the weather seemed to be improving. However, the course being
sopping wet we had lift, clean and place everywhere. The bunkers were also
in poor condition so we made it a full house. Naturally the carts were not
allowed on the course so on the path it was and off we went.
The course was wet then the rain slowed and the sun came
out, and it became really humid, uncomfortably so. So with a wet course we
did the best we did we could, and ploughed on. As the day went on the
humidity continued and the day became very tiring. However, the day was
still enjoyable.
Then back and into a fine shower. The new clubhouse
provides ample changing facilities and the restaurant overlooks the last
holes of both nines. The food is also quite good and well priced. Then into
cars and back to Bert’s and the road being clear by now we were soon back.
Back at Bert’s the players tucked into Bert’s Golfers
Special, which on this day was fish and chips. Well done and thanks Bert and
Pu. Then onto the presentation. With only a few players we had one flight
and the winner, by a street, was Tom Cotton with 43 points. In second, also
a good score, was Mike Gaussa with 40 points and in third shooting his
handicap was Alan Sullivan. We then partook of Bert’s ‘Happy Hour’ until
1900 hrs.
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Tom Cotton, Mashi Kenata
and Derek Brook.

McPhail did not fail
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar

David Shelton, Bob McPhail
and Craig Wyer at The Golf Club after the Laem Chabang comp.
Monday, August 15, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Roger Koehler (26) 40pts
2nd Jim Dundon (16) 36pts
3rd Alex Tregurtha (19) 36pts
We had 4 groups out there today from “The Club” and
Rayong Green Valley was the destination. The course was in great shape so
that just added to the enjoyment of a great layout. There are more locals
that are members here than any other course in Pattaya and there is good
reason for it.
The father/son duo of Barry and Alex Tregurtha are back
in town but it was the lad who got to the podium first on this trip. A night
of Penfolds Bin No.2 wasn’t enough to help Barry on his card this time. Alex
came in with a third (on count back) to semi-resident Jimmy Dundon who stays
with us at The Golf Club on his breaks from the high seas. Nice shootin’
guys!
The story of the day, however, was the high handicapper
Roger Koehler who shot the lights out with a sparkling round of 40
Stableford points! Roger also currently holds the record for most foot
massages in a 24 hour period. Well played Roger and thanks for showing those
long hittin’ single digit boys that we doubles can still come through once
in a while.
Tuesday, August 16, Laem
Chabang - Stableford
1st Bob McPhail (16) 39pts
2nd David Shelton (7) 37pts
3rd Walter Baechli (18) 36pts
What a great course Laem Chabang is! OK, it was quite wet
on the day but probably the same at every course in Pattaya with the heavy
rains we have had of late. LC is still a class act and we were lucky enough
to be assigned the C and B courses for our comp.
Last year they put in a new and very much improved
driving range and practice area for chipping and putting that is located
just past the hotel on the right. This year the SportsMall outfit have come
in and made a beautiful pro-shop in the entire area around the green fee
desk. Each manufacturer has its own equipment area and they have lots of it.
They have some nice gear there, so allow some time to check it out on your
next trip.
Brian & his “Queenie” Marlene Prudden are back to join us
from a cold and harsh Australian winter. Not. It’s great to see our regulars
coming back to roost for the season already. Fellow Ozman Bob McPhail has
been playing great golf these days and has been very consistent (must be
nice!). He earned his victory today with a solid 39 points that was enough
to beat the gentleman from Virginia, Dave Shelton.
It was also nice to see Walter Baechli take time out from
the Northshore gallery to play with us once again and well done to Walter
for his 36 on the day.
Friday, August 19,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
1st David Shelton (7) 38pts
2nd Bob McPhail (16) 37pts
3rd Bob Newell (9) 36pts
Thursday was Alexandra’s 3rd birthday party at Pattaya
Pizza so we were all a bit knackered the next day after the social event of
the season. Our buddy Roachie is a former pro golfer from Melbourne and is
now caddy for German pro Marcel Siem on the European Tour. He is a great
golfer in his own right who plays off 4 now but doesn’t swing a club much
these days. When he does, it is very impressive. Naturally, everyone wanted
to play with him and see his game. Once we sorted out the fight to be in his
four-ball with Nigel, Dale, Bob and the rest, it was off to the first tee!
What better venue for a test of golf than the links of
Treasure Hill. This is a tough course to score well on and cracking the 40
point mark is rare here. Dave Shelton has been in fine form lately and he
stayed the course here for his victory, finally, after many placings at the
number 2 spot. He and Bob McPhail traded podium places from our Tuesday at
Laem Chabang as Bob headed off back to Oz until December. Bob Newell was
kind enough to herd cattle (seamlessly) on this day and our thanks go out to
him. Just like the old days mate? Of course Dale won for “Best Dressed” once
again.
We must give a non-golf plug to JTB as he now has his
epic tome “Dirty Rotten Rascal” available on Amazon. com so have a look and
a search and support your local author, Mr. John Dearden.
We are off to the Kabinburi Sports Club once again for
the best deal on a road trip anywhere. Only 2,200 baht for a great 4-star
hotel with breakfast and 2 green fees. The signup sheet is up now for the
6th and 7th of September and only 32 places are available so come on down!
Thanks to all for participating in this week’s fixtures,
and don’t forget to check us out on facebook/golfclubpattaya for updates,
musings, and scandals in general.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro,
off Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or

Hansen battles the elements to win
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Khao Kheow on
Monday, 15th August to play a stableford competition over the B and C nines
which were not in their best condition. Khao Kheow suffers more from rain
than many courses because of its location, making maintenance an awkward
task and this day was no exception as heavy drizzle stayed with the group
for more than three hours of the round.
However PGS golfers are made of stern stuff and the
Scottish “summer” conditions suited Peter Duncan as he raced to a two under
halfway total of twenty points. Amazingly this was four points behind the
Aussie magician Peter Masters who had played the front nine in level par off
the sticks. Soggy fairways took their toll on the return nine and Peter
stuttered to 34 points for third place behind a relieved Peter Masters in
second with 37.
Ploughing through at the head of the field was Danish
golfer Benny Hansen and he continued the form he had shown the previous week
as he finished with a prodigious 38 points for an excellent win.
Birdie ‘2’s were recorded by Andy Robinson on B8 and
Wichai Tananusorn on C3 and Paul Bartlett took the Booby Bevy after leaving
his change bag at the Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao thereby having to invest
in a new outfit from the pro shop at Khao Kheow.
Khao Kheow is a tasty challenge on the best of days but
when the going gets tough... you know the rest!
Debut win for Grigg
Pattana was the venue for the Pattaya Golf Society on
Wednesday, 17th August when the Soi Buakhao based group played a stableford
competition over the C and B nines which were soft but well prepared.
Playing off the white tees, on fairways with no run, over
a total of 6800 yards was a game for the bravest but the PGS has always been
up to the challenge. Scores inevitably were moderate at best and in second
place two golfers shared the honours with Wichai Tananusorn and Evan Millar
returning scores of 32 points.
The winner was Aussie Neil Grigg whose 34 points was a
result of both his length and accuracy. It was Neil’s debut win with the
group after a dozen or so starts and was very well received back at Rabbi’s
Elephant Bar.
There were no birdie ‘2’s on the tough par threes and the
Booby Bevy went to Ronnie Ramsay whose third shot on the final hole lay
under a greenside tree and his next two attempts to find the “dance floor”
resulted in the ball being buried almost half a foot down amongst the roots.
Hardly the stuff of champions but definitely all part of a good day at
Pattana with the Pattaya Golf Society.
Slick golf from the Oilman
On Friday, 19th August the Pattaya Golf Society travelled
to Eastern Star to play a stableford competition on the course which has
been getting good reviews recently after the appointment of a new
greenkeeper seems to be doing the trick on the maintenance of the course. As
a result there were more golfers there than on many occasions doing the
recent past. With the recent wet weather the fairways were a little jaded
and scruffy but the greens were fine.
The returning Japanese golfer Haruyuki Kato shook off his
jetlag to record 31 points for third whilst Paul Bartlett ended his golfing
stay this trip with his best round, 32 points, giving him second. The winner
was a very consistent Don Nellis whose back nine was slick and accurate to
give him 35 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to
Rabbi who was in the frame after nine holes but fell away during the return
nine.
It was a nice surprise to find Eastern Star in a better
condition than for a long time and long may it continue.

Harry V makes
a winning return
to the Backyard
The Backyard Golf Society

Harry V.
On arrival at Emerald Golf Course it was good to see a
couple of the older members were back from their travels: Alan B, back for
two weeks, and Harry V returning made the numbers up so eight players this
week in all competitions.
Another tight context this week with JJ in the mix again
but Harry V won the competition on count back with a total of 33 points.
With the tee being put back on our nearest the pin hole the first group went
through without anyone hitting the green but Dan M managed to hit it and
take the prize.
The skins were spread around this week and the results
are as follows: Dan M (4), Harry V (3), Alan B (3), Bob G (3), Neville (2),
Andy Oz (2) and JJ (1).
Finally, as a society there are things that we rely on
certain people to do every week and we would like to thank Dan M for all his
work and wish him all the best on his European vacation.
Mike Dabanovich crashes into form
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, August 15,
Treasure Hill - Scramble
With heavy overcast skies and a poor weather forecast the
ever hopefuls from Soi 13 took off up the 331 to Treasure Hill, where the
course was found to be in excellent condition with almost pristine fairways
which were showing practically no wear and offering first class greens.

Mike Dabanovich.
Unfortunately the possibility of a great day’s golf was
dramatically and prematurely ended when the clouds eventually became
thunderstorms, the skies lit up to huge lightning flashes and the rain fell
in torrents.
Everyone had at least completed nine holes and some even
had started on the twelfth when the heavens opened and after waiting it out
for over an hour, the competition was finally abandoned with all entries
being carried forward to the next outing at Bangpra.
Wednesday, August 17,
Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Mike Dabanovich (10) 39pts
2nd Alan Gadsby (18) 34pts
3rd Joe McArdle (11) 34pts
4th Mark Armstrong (24) 30pts
5th Rodney Hayes (11) 30pts
Following a very disappointing day at Treasure Hill an
even bigger turnout signed in for the always popular trip to Bangpra, even
though the forecast was once again “thundery showers”.

Alan Gadsby.
Although the greens are nowhere near as fearsome as they
were in the past, they still proved to be a real test especially when the
approach shot had been left above the hole. But with the rest of the course
in tip top condition, all was set for a great day’s golf.
Mike Dabanovich showed his ability to at least keep the
golf ball on the straight and on the part of the course designed for it,
avoiding every obstacle and tree on his way round and carding a very good
three under handicap return that was the best by five, as the rest of the
field struggled to keep up. This was a huge improvement on his last round
where there were as many scratches on the card as there was on the cart.
Alan Gadsby slipped into second place scoring a win in
the count back over Joe McArdle by a margin of 17 to 15 on the back nine, to
leave Joe in third spot.
Mark Armstrong started slowly with just 9 points on the
front nine but then covered the inward half three under handicap which
included a five pointer on the 16th as he birdied the
hole with a two shot allowance.

Mark Armstrong.
That resulted in a 21 to 15 in the count back with Rodney
Hayes for fourth and fifth places, leaving Rodney once again bemoaning the
loss of an extra shot or two on his handicap.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but
Norman Cheetham had his usual one in the first division to sweep the pot.
Prior to the prize giving Stephen Beard welcomed new
members, Gavin Hargrave and Alan Gadsby and also welcomed back Mark
Armstrong, Toshihiro Aoki, Joe McArdle, Sean Connolly and Mike Dabanovich
from his intensive driving course following his unfortunate accident during
his search for the elusive Jackalope, although he claimed he was in the back
seat at the time of the incident and the person actually driving had a bushy
tail and long ears and at least one antler.
Friday, August 19,
Plutaluang East & South - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Mark Armstrong (24) 39pts
2nd Alan Gadsby (18) 36pts
3rd Phil Stevenson (22) 33pts
4th Mike Dabanovich (10) 33pts
5th Gavin Hargrave (29) 32pts
6th Kenny Priddy (22) 32pts
Once again the forecast was for rain and thunder
throughout the day, none of which materialized as the skies stayed mostly
overcast and the conditions stayed almost perfect for golf. Unfortunately
Plutaluang is a course that never lets a player get settled, as the mixture
of old and new courses are mixed in the new East and South layouts, with
greens that differ tremendously from hole to hole making a consistent
putting stroke and result almost impossible for those that do not play the
courses regularly. But all in all the course was very good value and very
playable for all levels of expertise.
After a very strong showing over the back nine in the
previous outing Mark Armstrong opened up with a big 19 points on the front
half and then followed up with another 20 points coming home to take the
day’s top honours by three from Alan Gadsby who took his second placing in
successive competitions with a solid level handicap round.
Phil Stevenson made sure of a happy farewell to Pattaya
with another podium finish as he won the count back over Mike Dabanovich
with a better 20 to 19, leaving Mike in fourth after they had both tied over
the eighteen.
Gavin Hargrave received his first honourable mention in
fifth as he also won a count back over Kenny Priddy with a better 16 to 15
result.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Mark
Armstrong cleared out the huge second division pot with the only one.
Back at The Haven there were farewells for Phil Stevenson
and Gary Warren.
Note: The Haven group is now departing Soi 13 at
the earlier time of 9 am until further notice. If you would like to play
with the group you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel
at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday,
Fridays and 9.00am on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of
courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Murnin (right) and Geoff Parker are vying for the golfer of the month title.
Wednesday, August 17,

today, however with B & C courses playing pretty long the scores were not
that impressive. John Graham won again two points ahead of Barry Murnin and

Australians win yearly golf
challenge from the Caddyshack

The winning Australia team.
Green Valley
Country Club
The Caddyshack hosted the yearly tournament against an
Australian group of golfers from Perth Australia, which consisted of 12
golfers from each team. Last year the Caddyshack team won in convincing
style and were favourites to retain the cup.
But what they didn’t take into consideration was that the
Aussies were going to put up a fierce fight. They took the Caddyshack by
complete surprise and after the final pairing came in the match was tied at
6 games each.
The format is that it goes down to the captains’ scores.
Bruce Toillet from team Caddyshack had scored 34 points but George May from
team Aussie had his best round to date with 39 points, which gave them the
victory.
The celebrations started immediately at the Caddyshack
with taunts Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. If there was an award for the most beer
drunk they would have won that by a country mile. The spirits were high and
the celebrations went on well into the early hours.
Our thanks go out to George May and Mel McGowan for
organising this great event and we look for forward to winning the trophy
back off you next year.

Stuvik gets back on track

Sandy poses for a photo with
his pit crew.
Sandy Stuvik, the 16 year old local Thai racer started
the Silverstone race weekend on August 20-21 (Round 9 & 10 of Formula
Renault Eurocup) by giving himself the largest challenge ever, making a
mistake on his exit lap for Friday’s first practice and damaging his car.
Losing out on the first of the two practice sessions left
the young racer feeling gloomy, however, the Interwetten.com Junior Team all
grouped around Sandy and gave him the encouragement and support he needed.

Sandy Stuvik gets to grips
with the Silverstone racing circuit.
Saturday morning saw the English circuit bathed in
beautiful summer sun and as the qualification got under way, the young Thai
was back in his fighting spirit and kept going faster and faster as he got
to grips with the challenging track. In front of the huge Silverstone crowd
he eventually got himself up to 13th place in his group and a 26th grid
start position, now only 2 seconds behind the group leader.
Sandy was positive and eager for the race to start and
although there was scattered drizzle as the race started, he shot up 3
places on the start lap and kept moving up the grid to 20th place. Then as
the rain increased at the Beckets corner, he got caught out and spun the
car, losing 3 positions, but immediately got back on track and started
regaining positions. By the end of the race Sandy got up to 19th place and
was very happy finally getting back up in the middle of the field.
With a combined spectator turnout of 120 thousand it was
clear that the beautiful English summer weather contributed in a big way to
the fantastic racing atmosphere at the Silverstone Circuit. The enormous
early morning traffic congestion into the track got everyone’s pulse up, but
in the end all got where they needed to be in time.
Sandy attacked immediately for the Sunday morning
(round10) qualifying and improved his time again compared to the front
runners and set his personal fastest time around Silverstone with 2:01:058.
This put him 14th in his group and 27th on the 38 car grid.
For the afternoon race, Sandy had a poor start and lost
several positions going into Copse corner, but in usual style he again went
much stronger in the race than in the qualifying and had soon moved himself
up to 23rd position. Unfortunately he got hit on the side trying to overtake
another car and damaged the front wing and from then on just had to do his
best to maintain position.
There was plenty of action up and down the 38 car strong
grid and by race end Sandy found himself in 22nd position after finishing
the 14 lap race distance. The race was won by Dutchman Robin Frijns, with
Alex Lynn from UK in second and Frenchman Paul Loup Chatin in third.
Sandy and the team were positively encouraged with the
strong showing on only his first time at Silverstone and with the new team.
Most importantly this put the young Thai driver back up in the midfield of
this, the strongest Junior Formula racing field in the world. Sandy’s
objective for this season has always been to learn and prepare himself for a
championship challenge in 2012.
The Formula Renault EuroCup has been raced since 1991. It
is organized under the “World Series by Renault” program and races on
Formula One tracks across Europe. The championship winner will secure a
budget of Euro 500 000 to continue Formula Renault V6. Racing drivers who
have passed through Formula Renault Eurocup and are now in Formula One
include amongst others Pedro de la Rosa, Filipe Massa and Kamui Kobayashi.
The next race in the EuroCup series will be in the South
of France at the Paul Ricard Circuit during 16-18 September, 2011.

United secure share of the spoils against league leaders

Pattaya United go on the
attack during their match against Buriram PEA FC at the ‘Thunder Castle’
stadium in Buriram, Sunday, August 21. (Photo/Ariyawat Nuamsawat)
Staff Reporters
Pattay United left the intimidating atmosphere of the
‘Thunder Castle’ stadium in Buriram last Sunday with their heads held high
after securing a well deserved point against the runaway Premier League
leaders.
Buriram, who have lost only one match all season, went
into the game with a full strength team, having no injuries or suspensions
to worry about but they found it difficult to break down a stubborn Pattaya
defence that was once again superbly marshaled by Sompob Nilwong.
The hosts kept knocking at the door however and they were
given a glorious chance to break the deadlock 10 minutes before halftime
when they were awarded a penalty after Nilwong was harshly judged to have
handled in the area.
This however was not to be Buriram’s day and although
Frank Ohandza’s penalty was firmly struck, Narit in the Pattaya goal
correctly chose to dive to his left and produced a stunning save to turn the
ball around the post.
Narit was kept busy during the second half as the league
leaders pressed for an opening but Pattaya showed attacking intentions of
their own at the other end of the pitch and when a corner kick by Ittipol
Poolsap was only partially cleared, the ball fell to Anuwat Inyin whose
snap-shot flew just wide of the Buriram goal.
The final whistle signaled a fine result for Pattaya
whose form since the second half of the season got underway has shown big
signs of improvement. Despite the point, however, the Dolphins still reside
in 12th place in the league standings with the team
immediately below them, Pichit FC, having two games in hand. United will get
the chance to nullify one of these games when they entertain Pichit in their
next Premier League fixture on Sept. 11.
The region’s other Premier League sides had a weekend to
forget about as Chonburi FC were defeated 1-0 by TTM Pichit and Suzuki
Sriracha lost one nil at home to BEC Tero Sasana.

Bhumiphol Dam International
Mountain Bike Race this weekend

Mountain bikers race at the
Bhumibol Dam in Tak ever year.
The Annual Bhumibol Dam International Mountain Bike
Championships will take place in Tak province this coming weekend from
August 27-29.
Each year, mountain bikers gather at one of Thailand’s
most scenic dams for a series of mountain bike races and other fun
activities. For more than five years this mountain biking event has
attracted both locals and overseas visitors to test their biking skills and
enjoy a healthy pastime.
Mountain bikers and their families gather at the starting
line on the crest of the spectacular Bhumibol Dam in Tak province. The
scenic location provides a variety of race routes that will both challenge
semi-pro mountain bike racers and please recreational riders.
It depends on the participants as to how far they wish to
push their bikes and bodies. If they want the thrill of dropping down steep
slopes through jungle terrain, or the steady pace of riding along a trail
over rolling hills bordering the reservoir, the organisers have a choice of
categories to deliver the right experience.
There are six categories to choose from: long distance 60
km; family 16 km; tour biking 10 km; cycling-across on the dam’s crest 5 km;
international race 39 km; and amateur 24 km.
Other activities taking place over the weekend include
sightseeing around Bhumibol Dam, OTOP products of Tak Province on sale, folk
music by the Bhumibol Dam youth club and youth activities for environmental
protection and global warming concerns.
