Police impersonator foiled by news hounds
On the 17th of November, police arrested Somchai
Charoenphol, 35, on charges of impersonating an officer of the law.
With the help of local news reporters, police made the arrest just in
time to save Nirut Reungrit, a 17 year old motorcycle driver, from
becoming a victim of the fake copper.
From questioning Nirut at the scene, police learned that Nirut was
driving a motorcycle with no license tags on Pattaya Klang Road. When he
reached the Leng Kee Restaurant, where news reporters were eating, they
heard him yell, ‘You’re not a policeman. You have no right to handcuff
me!’ The group of reporters rushed to the scene of the fuss to find out
what was happening.
The teenager begged the reporters to help him. ‘This guy isn’t a police
officer. He’s been following me, and when I refused to stop he almost
hit me with his car. Now he’s put handcuffs on me. I know he’s not a
police officer.’
When questioned by reporters, Somchai said he was an ‘assistant’ to the
Pattaya Police force. He then pulled out a volunteer crime reporter’s
card which was from the province of Nakhorn Nayok. Upon seeing this,
reporters called Pattaya Police to deal with the situation.
Police have detained Somchai for further investigation and prosecution.
