Culture Minister tours Banglamung flood area

Local pets take to high ground to keep their paws dry during the annual floods.

Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome toured Banglamung neighborhoods affected by the latest bout of flooding, promising pumps and flood barriers.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh escorted the minister Sept. 30 through the Thakradan Temple community, which suffered dire consequences from last month’s floods.

More than 50 homes were damaged with water as high 1.5 meters. Many residents have had to move in with relatives or temporary shelter. The Banglamung Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, Laem Chabang City Hall and Sawang Boriboon Foundation have all contributed tents, food and supplies for displaced families.

Phrom Yensiri, 62, told Sukumol she’s affected by flooding every year, but this year the water came earlier than expected. She said she didn’t suffer too much damage.

Much of the flood water came after heavy rain ran out of Takientia, and Laem Chabang to the Banglamung canal, which overflowed.

Sukumol said she instructed Pattaya officials to bring in pumps. In the long-term, however, funds have been requested to build a 400-meter-long wall along the canal to prevent overflows.
