A wet win for Taddei & Toddy Junior
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Oct. 1, Pattana, A & C – Stableford
It had been a massive weekend of sport with Peter Grey’s Sydney
Swans winning a close one over Hawthorn in the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne
Storm beating Canterbury Bulldogs in the NRL Grand final and of course in an
epic finish Team Europe staging a memorable comeback against Team USA in The
Ryder Cup. All this resulted in several bleary eyes as we assembled at The
Growling Swan in readiness for the trip to the classy Pattana.
Alain
Taddei.
It was terrific to have Dick Braimbridge back with us after 3 months in New
Zealand and Queensland, Australia. We had 22 golfers ready to go up after 2
late withdrawals and after a bit of a delay we departed the GS 7 minutes
behind schedule at 8.37 am.
It was again fingers crossed with the weather after lots of overnight rain
but we arrived at the course after a 45 minute drive in 2 mini vans to find
conditions fine but extremely humid. Once again no carts on the fairways was
the rule so it was winter rules through the greens and we were designated to
play the A & C nines with our first fourball hitting off 5 minutes ahead of
schedule at 9.55 am.
The golf course was as expected a little soggy in parts but perfectly
playable and as usual beautifully prepared with a few greens having residual
sand on them due to ongoing course maintenance. With a slow Thai fourball in
front of us the pace was not exactly scorching and we took two hours &
twenty minutes to complete our first nine.
The humidity & the pace became hotter on the second nine and storm clouds
overhead were evident and as we walked up the fairway on the last hole we
could see the rain behind us and it was obvious that the heavens were going
to open shortly. Just as we commenced putting on the last green the storm
hit us but we managed to all putt out and scamper for shelter – almost
perfect timing. The five groups behind us we not so lucky and most of them
had to wait for about an hour before they could continue and complete their
round.

Brad Todd & Peter Blackburn
As the score came in it was obvious that it had been a
struggle for most as apart from the stormy weather the course had played
very long with minimal run on the fairways. Nonetheless it was a very
enjoyable day with great company but not so great golf.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for 19 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens which
were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Dave Neal, Max
Bracegirdle, Takeshi Hakozaki, Eddie Townsend & Bradd Todd. Also apologies
to Mike Allidi for omitting the mention of his company Mozart Bronze’s
sponsorship the previous Thursday. Many thanks to these guys for their
generosity.
For his second win in a row it was Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei who
finished on top in A Grade with Takeshi Hakozaki (17 point back nine) taking
second place on a count back from Ken “Let’s hear it for” Bernek (15 point
back nine) in third spot with both having 33 points. Another count back was
required to decide fourth & fifth spots and Mike Allidi (16 point back nine)
triumphed over yours truly (15 point back nine), both on 32 points.
Brad Todd was victorious in the B Grade with 31 points, just 1 point ahead
of Roy Dayton in second place. In a three-way count back on 28 points it was
Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle (16 point back nine) finishing third from Dick
Braimbridge (14 point back nine) in fourth spot from Frank Donnelly (11
point back nine) in fifth place.

The September monthly ‘Consistency Award’ went to Martin Todd while the
‘Mystery Hole Award’ was collected by the scribe. The Compass Cap (awarded
for the worst score on the day) was won by Dave Neal who of course accepted
it in fine spirit.
Back at The Growling Swan afterwards it was a few coldies and after the
Swans win on Saturday a possible name change to The Grinning Swan was
discussed. Another great day with a terrific group of golfers who all enjoy
lots of fun.
Thursday, Oct. 4, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Once more there had been plenty of overnight rain in Pattaya but
by the time we assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for our trip to
Treasure Hill the weather outlook looked extremely promising.
We had an excellent field of 25 golfers ready to play and amongst them were
Fiona Crebo from Canada and formerly Scotland plus Bruce Symes from New
Zealand who was playing with us for the very first time. Sadly we were
saying farewell to our very good friends Dave Neal & his lady Thientong
Charoenrung as Dave is returning to the UK in a couple of days. Thientong
will continue to be involved with Thai golf as she returns to her caddy
duties.
Departing the GS right on time at 8.30 am in 2 mini vans we completed the
journey in just on 50 minutes where we found the weather fine and the golf
course very quiet. A phone call from Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei who
had once more got his wires crossed and gone to Pleasant Valley meant a
reshuffling of the groups to give Alain time to get to Treasure Hill & play
in the last group. Alain was awarded the prize for the “longest drive” on
the day.
Our first group got away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 am in terrific
weather although it quickly became more & more humid so fluid intake was
essential, no doubt of the amber variety for some. There is lots of work
going on around the course at Treasure Hill and quite a lot has been
completed with excellent tee boxes on most holes and although there are many
areas of G.U.R. around the greens it does not detract from the fine
condition of this rapidly improving golf course.
We proceeded at a very good pace with no delays and completed our front nine
in just over 2 hours. As it became more humid a drink stop or two was
necessary on the back nine and with the weather staying perfectly fine we
were back in the clubhouse after a four hour & twenty minute round. We had a
couple of good scores in our group on this challenging golf course and as
the scores came in it was apparent that many had struggled but the day was
very much enjoyed by one and all.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 19 and B Grade for 20 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens which
were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Dave Neal, Max
Bracegirdle, Takeshi Hakozaki, Fiona Crebo & Dick Braimbridge. Many thanks
to these golfers for their generosity.
Group one managed to contain the winners in both grades and the winner of A
Grade was yours truly with a steady 36 points, 1 point ahead of the
consistent Martin Todd in second. Another steady player, John Pierrel
finished in third spot with 34 points ahead of Takeshi Hakozaki in fourth
place with 33 points & Mike Gosden fifth on 31 points.
Martin Todd’s son Brad had an excellent 39 points to win the B Grade, a
massive 10 points ahead of Dave Neal in second place and third was Roy
Dayton with 28 points. Jan Lovgreen finished fourth with 27 points and in a
three-way count back (on would you believe 23 points?) it was Fiona Crebo
(14 point back nine) who took fifth place from Tom Cotton (12 point back
nine) and Wendy Bernek (11 point back nine).

There was no Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score on the day) as it has
been retired for a short while but will be replaced by a similar award in
the very near future. It is also sad to report that Deefa the Dog has also
been retired but as negotiations continue with various animal & wildlife
associations we will no doubt soon have another method of raising money for
the needy in Pattaya.
Back at The Growling Swan afterwards we had a good, thirsty crowd who
consumed copious quantities of “Aussie cold” beers whilst having lots of
fun. Bon Voyage to mine host Peter Grey who was leaving that night for
Melbourne, Australia due to a family bereavement.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low &
high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar)
in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For
bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email

Andy Makara wins DeVere sponsored Monthly Medal
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Greg Hirst (left), the sponsor
from DeVere Financial Group, presents Andy Makara with the winning Medal
trophy.
Monday, Oct. 1, Burapha -
Stableford
An excellent field of 35 here at Burapha again to play
the B & D nines from the white tees; the course was still quite wet and
carts were not allowed onto the fairways so winter rules were in place.
Dennis Pelly (42pts) excelled, just ahead of the Chiang
Rai/Mai trip, so expect to get cut a little Dennis and have you peaked too
early? As usual, Jim Brackett (39) was right in the shake up, this time in
second (and he’s also joining us on the same tour).
Div B saw another tour hopeful, Peter Stonebridge take
that with 37pts ahead of Sel Wegner (36), who has gone back to Aus for a
couple of months.
Div C was taken by Dave Coller (36pts), despite being cut
a couple of shots last week after his big win at Plantation and Dave beat
Andy Makara (35) who hasn’t been seen on the podium for quite some time, so
well done Andy.
There were five ‘2’s from Jim Brackett, John Cunningham,
Tony Aslett & Terry Ellis all on hole 3 and Kev Reid on hole 11.
Div A (0-12)
1st Dennis Pelly (10) 42pts
2nd Jim Brackett (5) 39pts
3rd John Cunningham (7) 35pts
Div B (13-17)
1st Pete Stonebridge (13) 37pts
2nd Sel Wegner (13) 36pts
3rd Clinton Kimber (14) 36pts
Div C (18+)
1st David Coller (24) 36pts
2nd Andy Makara (28) 35pts
3rd Ron Meldrum (25) 31pts
Tuesday, Oct. 2, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
An almost washed away Pattaya Country Club meant that the
original field of nine was reduced to just six, one of the departing players
being our resident writer for this course. The scores were none too clever
with the exception of one from Jinjo, who scored an excellent 37pts
considering the conditions.
There were two ‘2’s from Jinjo & Seesa (Hole 7)
1st Martin O’Neill (28) 37pts
2nd Phompinmon Seesa (26) 29pts
3rd Geoff Moodie (26) 27pts
Wednesday, Oct. 3, Eastern Star – Stableford
15 Outbackers travelled to Eastern Star on this sunny
morning, for a change. We played off the whites at about 6500 yards but
unfortunately all last week they had heavy rain to contend with here and the
course was very wet on certain fairways and rough. Amazingly, the carts were
still allowed to drive anywhere on the course which resulted in tyre tracks
all over the place.
In my opinion when the course is that wet there should be
NO CARTS allowed if they haven’t got paths.
Hopefully in a few weeks time with the onset of the dry
season, the course should be back in ship shape condition and we will
definitely give it another go.
On hole 17 (par 3), Tim Knight hit a screamer of a shot
and landed just on the fringe about two inches off the green when along came
a dog, picked Tim’s ball up and ran through the building site. Tim chased
after the dog but to no avail which upset him as he had already lost 5 or 6
brand new balls to the water gods. After all this drama he still managed to
get his par which was nearly a two with two different balls.
Greg Nathan got the only ‘2’ on the 3rd hole.
1st Bryce Stick (20) 31pts
2nd Bernie Stafford (14) 30pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (8) 29pts
Wednesday, Oct. 3, Siam Plantation – Stableford
The first visit by the Outback at the start of the new
high season to this great venue had a slightly depleted field of 17 due to a
couple of no shows and a late withdrawal. The Outback has a great deal here
throughout the high season; all you need to do to qualify for your special
discount green fee voucher (cheaper than member’s guest), is to come and
have a drink or a meal at the Outback; or for further details, give Jack a
call.
Welcome to Jeff Acheson who led the way, playing the B &
C nines, with a fine 36pts playing off 8, beating the departing Steve Reece
with 35. Rosco (33) was third with Kerry Beck back in fourth on 32.
Loads of other goodbyes to say today including Phil
Williams, Terry & Steve Ellis, Rick Speyer and Bart Hantke – safe journey
home fellas.
There were two ‘2’s from Jeff Acheson (3rd) & Kerry Beck
(7th).
1st Jeff Acheson (8) 36pts
2nd Steve Reece (13) 35pts
3rd Rosco Langoulant (11) 33pts
4th Kerry Beck (8) 32pts
Friday, Oct. 5, Green Valley - Medal
Thirty-nine players turned out for the Medal round at
Green Valley, proudly sponsored by Greg Hirst from the De Vere Financial
Group. The course was in good condition considering the amount of rain that
Pattaya has had over the last week but we still had ‘lift, clean and place’
as there were still a number of muddy areas around the course. The greens
were in good condition and great to putt on.
No rain and a lovely Thailand sunny day for a change so
scoring should have been easy but only two players managed to break the par
of the course with Andy Makara showing a return to form and winning the
Medal trophy with a great round of net 67 off his 28 handicap, and Mark
McDonald shooting gross 73, net 70 to win his division and the low gross
medallion for the month. Aussie visitor Tony Gliddon won the B division with
a net 73 and another Tony, Tony Aslett won the C division, also with a net
73.

Wednesday winner Jeff Acheson
(right) with runner-up Steve Reece.
There were four ‘2’s from Steve Mann, Mark McDonald, Tony
Gliddon & Bob Lindborg.
Next week, after a year plus trying out different
handicap systems, the Outback will return to using the PSC administered USGA
system, with interim weekly cuts as necessary but we will continue to
closely control all non-PSC players’ and visitors’ handicaps.
Medal Trophy
1st Andy Makara (28) net 67

Sods law at Emerald
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
A day’s golf at Emerald has a perennial appeal to Pattaya
golfers and on Friday, 5th October, the Pattaya Golf Society left Soi
Buakhao for a stableford round in Ban Chang. The course was undergoing
serious remedial work in front of every green, a distance of up to twenty
metres, full width, from the fringe being an assortment of various types of
sod and sand. GUR was applied but the golfers suffered badly as a result of
not reaching their destination in regulation.
It was a frustrating day and for the record the competition was won by
Wichai Tananusorn with 34 points, with Seil Revels taking second on 33 and
Jim Ferris and Jim Proctor sharing third with 31.
Mike Sim recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on the fifteenth.
Unsurprisingly it was unanimously decided back at Rabbi’s in Soi Buakhao to
give the “sods” at Emerald a miss next month.
Bob Webb back in form
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Oct. 1, Khao Kheow
(White tees) - Stableford
CSS 70
1st Bob Webb (14) 41pts
2nd Seppo Sadeharju (23) 38pts
3rd Phillip Cass (19) 35pts
4th Yasuo Suzuki (12) 35pts
5th Alwyne Burley (18) 34pts

Bob Webb.
As the high season draws nearer there appears to be even
less players to fill the many available tee times, but perhaps that is just
a result of the extremely bad weather forecasts of late and not the
financial hardships in other parts of the world that are affecting those who
usually visit the Pattaya area. And in view of the low numbers, maybe the
plans of some of the East Coast association to increase the green fees and
push most of the courses into compulsory carts will need to be put on hold
for the foreseeable future.
Lets us hope for the sake of the local golfers, who
number many hundreds and that still play some times, that eventually some
sense will prevail before the area sees the same results as in Spain and
Portugal which helped to start the exodus to Asia back in the late nineties.

Joe Niisato.
For sure many of the usual players were not to be seen as
almost every morning opened with rain following a heavy overnight downfall,
but the groups from Soi 13 were still active although rather smaller than
normal for the time of year.
Bob Webb strode back into town to claim the win off the
white tees which had been selected on Monday due to the amount of water
around the course and together with the ‘lift and place’ local rule ensured
that the scores were well below the standard, ensuring that the CSS for the
day reduced to 70.
Seppo Sadeharju continued to enjoy his recent run of form
following his hole in one with a two under return that took second place
ahead of a count back for third that Phillip Cass won with a better 19 to 15
as Yasuo Suzuki could muster just 15 after a very promising front nine.
Alwyne Burley rounded out the podium with a two over return.

Seppo Sadeharju.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome
backs for Yasuo Suzuki and Bob Webb together with a farewell for Phillip
Cass.

2nd Yasuo Suzuki (12) 32pts
3rd Erik Donnestad (4) 32pts
4th
Ole Stamnes (31) 31pts
After sitting around looking at the rain beating down
over the swimming pool for nearly an hour, the skies cleared and the group
took off for the course under almost clear skies and they were greeted with
a course that was undergoing some renovation, especially in front of many of
the greens. But with the areas clearly defined as GUR, and ‘lift and place’
in the fairways in effect, the day’s round was very pleasurable as the skies
remained clear until everyone had returned to Pattaya for the prize giving.
Joe Niisato had a very good back nine to claim another
win after ending the front half with just three points on the last three
holes but recovering to finish strongly and take the top spot by a single
point from Yasuo Suzuki, who this time won the count back over Erik
Donnestad with a superior 19 to 16, which left Ole Stamnes in fourth another
point further behind.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division.
Back at the Haven there were welcome backs for Frank
Dunstan, Gaute Moen, Ole Stamnes and Erik Donnestad.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at
185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Newbert has no trouble with a double
PSC golf from The Golf Club

‘Mauler’ Mike Newbert poses for a photo with
TGC crew.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Oct. 1, Green Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Mike Newbert (13) 36pts
T2nd Henry O’Brien (20) 33pts
T2nd Gregg Morris (15) 33pts
Can you believe it is October already? Here we go on our
last month of super discounts known as “Sports Days” here in Pattaya and the
deals last until the 31st of October. Now is the time to squeeze in as many
rounds as you can and save a ton! We would like to extend our thanks to the
Eastern Seaboard Golf Managers Association for offering us these special
prices all summer long for the golf courses in Chonburi and Rayong.
If you haven’t already done so, this would be a good time
to renew, or join, the Pattaya Sports Club for discounts now and in the
coming high season. That is the best way to also save a ton for the next 6
months!
Mike “The Montauk Mauler” Newbert made it a double as he
won today, just as he did last week, to continue his love affair with Green
Valley. Mike was 2 strokes off his last week’s 38 but was the only golfer to
shoot their handicap, thus winning by 3 shots. Well played Michael and good
job once again!
That legendary Scottish golfer Henry O’Brien staggered
home with 33 Stableford points to tie with Gregg Morris for second place
honours on another great outing run by Captain Phil Smedley.
Wednesday, Oct. 3, Royal
Lakeside (White tees) – Stableford
1st Mike Newbert (13) 38pts
2nd Michael Hastie (15) 34pts
3rd
Phil Smedley (12) 31pts
Sure, it is a bit of a drive to get out here. It usually
takes us about an hour for the trip to Royal Lakeside, but it is well worth
the effort. The course was still in magnificent condition despite all the
recent rains and it is an easy walking track. The fairways had a spongy
dampness underfoot but very playable for this time of year and we all agreed
it was a good choice for a comp.
He did it again, and I am sounding like a broken record,
but Mike Newbert continues his fine form with another win to top the podium
with a 38 point round here. What is very impressive is that this is Mike’s
first round at Royal Lakeside so he is truly in his purple patch.
It’s a funny old game, and most times there is neither
rhyme nor reason for playing well or playing poorly, as we witnessed 2 weeks
back at the Ryder Cup. Such is the frustration we put ourselves through to
knock a little white ball into a 4ผ inch hole.
Michael Hastie is over here from Australia and has been
making many new friends at TGC for the last 10 days. Today he came good and
took second place honours with a 34-point round whilst Captain Phil got his
foot in the door with only 31 points! All that seemed like a perfectly good
excuse for a few laughs, a few beers and a big Ribeye steak from the grill.
Friday, Oct. 5, Phoenix
(White tees) – Stableford
1st Ben Denham (4) 33pts
2nd Henry O’Brien (20) 32pts
3rd
Phil Smedley (12) 31pts
There was a big storm brewing that was making its way
over from Vietnam, the weather forecasters told us. What the heck, we said
and went out for a great day of golf. The decision was correct and we ended
up at Phoenix after we had heard earlier in the week that Emerald, our
scheduled course, was having maintenance issues.
Phoenix was in lovely shape and we had not a drop of rain
on the day. Ben Denham took first, Henry ‘O’ scooped second and Captain Phil
once again needed only 31 points to steal third.
Thanks for joining us for another great week of quality
golf here at The Golf Club, the home of golf in Pattaya.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We
usually play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously
fun day out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.

Collinge wins one for the Canucks
PSC Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Oct. 1, Royal Lakeside –
Stableford
A smaller group of golfers today due to several players staying up to watch
the heroic exploits of the European team in the Ryder Cup until the early
hours of the morning. We had no American players today, so maybe they’re
keeping a low profile – for a change! Those that made it to golf (including
at least 3 who had watched the whole match until 5.30 a.m.) made the trip to
Royal Lakeside in good time.
Neil
Griffin won a rare near pin on his first game back.
The course was in good shape, if a little soggy after recent heavy rain and
we elected to play ‘pick, clean and place’, playing off the white tees.
There was little or no run on the fairways, so the course was playing long,
but the greens were in their normal superb condition.
There was no stopping Al Collinge (Canadian, and definitely not American)
from taking his second win in a row; fortunately he’s departing to Canada
later this week, so somebody else will get a chance!
1st Al Collinge (hcp. 15) 39pts
2nd Tony Robbins (12) 35pts
3rd Gordon Melia (16) 33pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Tony Robbins and Al Collinge (2).
Wednesday, Oct. 3, Burapha – Stableford
A bright sunny day as our three groups set out to play the
unusual combination of A and D nines at Burapha. Once again the fairways
were soggy and the buggies were confined to cart paths only, so we elected
to play pick, clean and place, which turned out to be a wise decision as
there was mud on the ball after virtually every shot. The course was in
generally good shape though, with difficult rough and subtly sloping greens.
Alan Freeman produced the best round of the day to claim the winners spot,
one point ahead of Geoff Parker. The walk from buggy to ball proved too much
for Roger Mitchell’s dodgy knees and he forced to retire – hard luck Roger –
hope to see you back soon.
1st Alan Freeman (3) 35pts
2nd Geoff Parker (13) 34pts
3rd Lee Butler (14) 33pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Geoff Parker and P.J. Redmond.
Friday, Oct. 5, Green Valley – Stableford
Despite the impending arrival of tropical storm Gaemi later in
the day, the sky was bright and clear as we set off to tackle the popular
Green Valley course. The course was surprisingly quiet and once again was a
little soggy in places after the recent heavy rain.
We welcomed back Neil Griffin (the only Derby County supporter in Pattaya)
for his annual visit, and he made a good start by claiming one of only two
near pins hit on the day.
The course was playing long because there was very little run on the
fairways, but that didn’t really account for the surprisingly poor scores.
Normally someone will at least play to their handicap here, but today the
best score was recorded by Mikito Homma, also playing his first game back,
with a modest 33 points.
The round was completed in good time, leaving ample time for a few cold
beers before returning for the presentation at The Ranch.
1st Mikito Homma (15) 33pts
2nd Geoff Hart (20) 32pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (13) 32pts
Near Pins: Geoff Hart and Neil Griffin.
Red Ants Rule
Some time ago the Bunker Boys had the rule that there was no relief
allowed from red ants. The PSC then adopted a local rule that relief could
be granted if the player was attacked by red ants whilst addressing the
ball. We decided to follow this PSC rule, but unfortunately this has led to
several controversies recently.
The crux of the problem is that if you are blocked behind a tree, how many
red ants constitute an attack, thereby allowing you to a free drop away from
the obstruction? Rumour has it that certain people have been observed
desperately searching for ants, and even observed whistling and stamping
their feet to attract them! (But surely this is as likely to scare them
away?) Anyway, we’ve now decided to revert to the old rule – so make sure
you pack some balm in the golf bag.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for
all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our
website at www.bunkersociety.com.

Watson shoots 73 gross but loses out
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Oct. 2, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Well didn’t it rain Noah! It seems that this year is as
bad as I can remember for games being affected by the rain. Today the test
was to be Khao Kheow, where Poppy Golf’ is to be played next month. I
remember that at this time last year the course was just about washed away
and was in very poor condition, but still recovered for Poppy Golf. With all
the rain of late I wondered as we drove up there how the course was holding
up.

Friday winners with one of
‘Bert’s finest’.
Having booked in it was a quick change and out to the
cart area where, as suspected, we found that carts were not allowed on the
fairways but the rough was fine, and we were to play the B & C Nines.
Teeing off it was noticed that the sky was most ominous
and as we walked up the first fairway we found that the ground underfoot was
wet and soggy. However a day out is a day out and as we walked it was
obvious that the course, while saturated, would only need a few days with
the sun out to come back to its normal fine condition. However would the
rain hold off on this day?
The rough was also very wet, however we ploughed on
until, after about 5 holes, we had our first downpour and took cover. After
about 10 minutes we continued and it brightened up a bit. All was well for a
while but around about the end of the first nine the rain got heavy again
and the siren went off. Fortunately we were all in the vicinity of the
central break spot, near the clubhouse, so were all quickly there when it
got really rough.
Then the heavens really opened and for about 1 hour it
absolutely bucketed down; the paths became rivers and the fairways were
ponds. You could have bathed in the bunkers.
As all good things do, the rain stopped and it was
notable how cool it had become. Before the rain it had become uncomfortably
humid, but now it was really pleasant. However, we gave it some time and the
floods subsided and we went to C1 to begin play. The fairway was still very
wet but even with all the casual water we were able to find somewhere to put
the ball. We finished the round and suffice to say it was a good couple of
hours despite a fair bit of water.
Being very late when we finished, it was soon into cars
and back to Bert’s, wetter but no wiser.
The results were declared as fast as possible and we had
a tie for the winner. With 37 points the winner was Brian Parrish on count
back from Mark West in second. In third was Mike Gaussa with 35 points in a
three-way count back that saw Barry Elphick in fourth and Mashi just losing
out.
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Brian Parish, Bob Watson,
Mashi Kaneta
Friday, Oct. 5, Plutaluang
– Stableford
This is a difficult write-up to do as last time I played
here I said “never again!” I do not mind the East and South Nines when they
are in reasonable condition, but I have to say West and North drive me round
the bend. I turn up there not wanting to play and already beaten. Weird
really because they hold regional tournaments on this West and North and
many players say they think it is a great 18 holes. Me?, as soon as I start
on this 18 holes it reminds me of being on the farm when I was a child! We
have some long discussions after golf on my refusal to class this 18 holes
as anything but torture and rural. I am usually in the minority.
At the last minute I decided to join the players and my
luck held as we played the East and South. Now to me this 18 holes looks
like a golf course, even though on this day you could not take your cart on
the fairway, or on many holes - not even the rough. But it has been raining
heavily all over the area for weeks and on first viewing the course seemed
to have held up.
The fairways were soggy and the rough in places quite
nasty, also on the South course the greens had been cored and the ball went
where it wanted to. Still, the day was quite pleasant despite Walter coming
dressed like a harlequin and changing half way around into another form of
radiance - John Daly beware!
Soon over we sat in the restaurant, where the beer and
food is cheap and the views are great. Then it was time to brave the trip
back on a Friday night. The journey entailed much waiting in queues, but we
finally got back. Then it was into the results.
The A Flight, 0 to 17, the winner was Takeshi Hakozaki
with 38 points on count back over Bob Watson in second. Incidentally, Bob’s
38 points related to a gross 73, eat your heart out! In third we had another
count back on 33 points that saw Alan Sullivan in third with Mike Gaussa
just losing out.
In the B Flight the winner was Max Matthews with 33
points on count back over Dick Warberg in second. We then had a many-way
count back on 30 points that saw John Hadden in third and Walter Baechli,
Graham Buckingham and A.V.D. just losing out.
We also had the final of the ‘Match play’ that saw Mike
Gaussa as the winner. T.T.F.N.

Rained out and in the sunshine
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Oct. 2,
Rayong C.C. - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Rayong Country Club, where we
started out under cloudy skies, hoping to miss the threatening rain.
After a brief shower on holes #5 & 6, we continued on until hole #12
when the heavens opened. We played on through the deluge for 1 more
hole, but then more electrical activity had some dashing for the
clubhouse. The course became unplayable so the day was finalised
after 13 holes, with Willem & Jeff leading the way at the time.
Thursday, Oct. 4, Mt.
Shadow - Stableford
Thursday saw a marked improvement in weather conditions,
and we were at Mountain Shadow for the first time for several
months. The course was in good condition considering the amount of
rain in the area recently, so we played the ball as it lay.
Trev
(the Great) was a near pin winner at Mt. Shadow.
The greens were certainly lacking the fire the course is renowned
for, but still no notable scores were recorded. Jeff Wylie (5) led
the way with 32 points; usually consistent Jeff had a topsy-turvy
day, not recording a par until the 11th hole, but having had 3
birdies up to then.
Paul Smith (2) was next best with 31 points and could easily have
been more having missed a short putt and drowned a couple of balls
on the notorious 14th. Paul made up for it with 2 near pins while
Jeff & Trevor (the Great) each got 1.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday &
Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a
PSC affiliated venue we welcome all golfers, including seniors who
have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Mukesh a cut above the rest
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winning golfers.
Mike Gerrard
Friday, Sept. 28, Phoenix
– Team Stableford
Friday 28th September we had two teams fight it out
against each other in the two best scores of each team to count. It makes a
change from the all too regular individual games and ends up being a bit of
fun. As a team it also means that if any one player is having a howler he
can still contribute right up until the last hole.
So it was then that the team of Richard Baldwin,
Granville Swanton and Mukesh Thakker triumphed quite convincingly to beat
myself, Peter Rawling and Bill Hewitt.
Tuesday, Oct. 2, Phoenix -
Stableford
Onto Tuesday and our sponsor was Richard Baldwin and his
lovely lady of Ann’s Salon who provided a voucher for a manicure, hair cut,
shave etc. and even a full Brazilian (for the men only!)
Almost a full house today and with the threat of rain and
eventual downpour for 20 minutes we delayed our start. As the rain subsided
a little we decided to chance it and within 2 to 3 holes the drizzle had
stopped and the day turned out totally dry, however as it warmed up the
humidity rose which was a little uncomfortable.
There must have been a hell of a lot of rain over the
last few days - I have never seen the course quite as wet overall. Needless
to say carts were confined to cart paths only. Good job most of our lot
walk.
Only 5 players scored over 30 points today and our winner
and recipient of the Ann’s Salon voucher was Mukesh Thakker, who scored a
very good 38 points. Second was Bill Hewitt with 37 points, who knocked
Patrick Browne down to third place with the same score but whose back nine
was one shot worse. In fourth place was myself, Mike Gerrard, with 34
points, just beating John Bartley by virtue of a better back nine.
Near pin winners today were Mike Gerrard, Mukesh Thakker,
Bong Thonsaphon & Patrick Browne..
The lucky draw winners were Joris Goetschalkx (again?),
Wolfram Kruger, Arthur Busch & Richard Baldwin.
Next week we play for the KPK food services voucher under
Stableford rules. Anyone interested in joining in the fun can call me on 087
091 7565. However, as the high season kicks in shortly we will limit our
group to 6 groups only. We also do not allow any more than 28 handicap and
this group is for men only!
From November onwards any guest of the members group will be able to
enjoy a green fee of only 1,000 baht on Tuesday and Friday. If anyone is
interested, we also run regular sea fishing trips.

Jimmy ‘AK47’ slaughters the field
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday’s winners - Bob Newell,
left, and Christy Knight.
Sunday, Sept. 30, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Newell (7) 38pts
2nd Yui Bietry (9) 36pts
B Flight
1st Christy Knight (21) 37pts
2nd Barry Copestake (16) 36pts
Near Pins: No 4 Yui Bietry, No 9 Pierre Bietry, No
9 Mark Wood, No 16 Thierry Petrement
Every time this scribe picks up the score cards for
Sunday’s comp he checks quickly to see how his friends ‘Broad more’ Bob and
Christy ‘good’ Knight did. They didn’t disappoint as ‘Broad more’ was top of
the senior flight and man of the match with a very creditable 39 points.
Bob put this fine win down to his newly acquired belly
putter. Last week in an exclusive interview with this scribe, he stated that
they should be banned - hence the moniker! Yui Bietry took the flight silver
with a solid even par round.
Co. Dublin’s favourite son, Christy ‘good’ Knight took
the B Flight top place as he carded a very useful 37 points. Don ‘the ladies
man’ Lehmer edged Jimmy ‘no Bell’ and Mickey ‘nine holes’ Beresford for the
silver as all were tied with even par rounds.
‘Belly putter’ Bob Newell, Pierre Bietry, Nigel Jones and
Peter Henshaw shared the 2’s pot.
Monday, Oct. 1, Bangpakong
– Stableford
1st Jim Bell (17) 47pts
2nd
Nigel Black (8) 43pts
Bangpakong Riverside’s superb condition and somewhat
forgiving layout was expected to yield some good scores and it did not
disappoint. But no one could have dreamt up these scores as the Aussie gang
went crackers.
Jimmy ‘AK47’ Bell led the way with an amazing 47 points
off his departing 17 handicap. For his exploits, Jim acquired his new
moniker, ‘AK47’.
Jim’s total made Nigel Black’s 43-point masterpiece (that
included five birdies) look rather ordinary but it was good for the flight
silver. You must spare a thought for Aussie Paul Hack on 41 points and Ed
‘our man in the White house’ Wyckoff who had nothing to show for his 40
points.
Nigel did manage the only 2 of the day to dampen his
disappointment
Wednesday, Oct. 3, Bangpra
- Stableford
A Flight
1st Suresh Meheta (16) 36pts
2nd Paul Hack (12) 34pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (17) 31pts
2nd
Peter Henshaw (20) 28pts
Suresh Meheta was the only player to shoot his handicap
as he led the gang home through the marauding monkeys. Suresh was followed
home in the top flight by two of Monday’s heroes, the Aussie pair of Paul
Hack (34) and Nigel Black with 33 points.
Eddy ‘the eagle’ was amazed his 31 points managed to win
the B Flight top prize, and even more so were the Irish pair of Peter ‘Don
Corleone’ Henshaw and Christy ‘good’ Knight, both tied on 28 points, as
Peter came out on top for the sliver.
Nigel Black was the sole heir to the 2’s pot.
Friday, Oct. 5, Treasure
Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Jack Bybues (16) 38pts
2nd John Cunningham (6) 34pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (15) 32pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Delaney (22) 36pts
2nd John O’Connell (19) 35pts
3rd
Woodsy (20) 35pts
What a difference a course makes! And some distance
(6,726 yds) and some dryness. The same guys and girls and their sacks of
clubs took on the sometime diabolical design of Yoshikazu Kato, who also
fartherd the Canyon course as Thailand’s most fabled course, Blue Canyon.
But all the above meant nothing to Jack Bybues as he carded a most
impressive 38 points for the A Flight and man of the match honours.
John Cunningham and Nick Odnoral, with 34 points and 32
points respectively, rounded out the flight.
Eddy Delaney matched his handicap to take the top spot in
B Flight. John O’Connell snuck a count back past Woodsy (that’s all the info
on Woodsy card) to claim the silver.
Peter Cogging took home the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi

Seil ‘Revels’ in the rain
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
This week got off to the best possible start with everybody
talking about the amazing events in the Ryder Cup. For all golfers this
was incredible viewing and for the majority it was the most exciting
golf event ever seen. I count myself lucky to have seen the whole of the
last round on TV and didn’t move except to get up for another beer.
On Monday 1st October, when I was on a flight from London to Bangkok via
Colombo, the TRGG were heading to Eastern Star to do battle with another
of Thailand’s tricky courses. Seil Revels (5) finished first on 32
points, with Dave Edwards (10) and Andrew Purdie (18) finishing second
and third respectively on 30 points, Dave winning on count back.
On Tuesday 2nd October it was Green Valley playing host and Frank Seaton
(13) played an excellent round returning with 40 points which was way
ahead of the rest. Ian Sceats (20) finished second on 36 points and the
always colourfully dressed Matt Mackay (10) came in third on 35.
Thursday 4th October marked the end of the low season when enough
golfers turned up at Phoenix (Mountain/Lakes) to require two divisions.
Alan Evans (23) showed all the youngsters in the field the way home by
taking the overall winners jersey on 36 points. Division 1 (up to 13
handicap) was won by Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11) on 35 points, beating
Bob Watson (-1) and Max Scott (2) respectively on count back also
finishing on 35.
Division 2 (14 handicap upwards) was won by Phil Taylor (16) on 33
points, winning on count back from Suresh Mehta (16). The ‘Welsh Wizard’
Alun Webber (21) finished third on 32 points.
Saturday 6th October saw the TRGG head off to play Mountain Shadow after
some particularly heavy rain the night before. It might be the end of
the low season but it definitely isn’t the end of the rainy season yet
with a lot more rain forecast this coming week.
Seil Revels (5) finished the week the same way he started it at the top
of the leader board. He shot 38 points which was good enough to beat
Anderw Purdie (19) on 37 and Tony Glidden (10) on 35.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week!

Maiko signs off with a win
PSC golf from Cafe Kronborg
Monday, Oct. 1, Bangpra –
Stableford
It was off to Bangpra for our last visit until next March, 43
minutes en-route and we were off the first tee 13 minutes early under
cloudy and steamy conditions which prevailed all day, with just a brief
shower and a group of monkeys showing up.
The course was the wettest we have seen it in a number of years, not
giving an inch of roll, but the greens were still very speedy. Despite
the conditions the course was heavily booked in front of us which
resulted in a 5-hour round for the players.
Welcomes went out today to Le Dung Nguyen from Hanoi and working in
Hungary, Mick O’Connor, back from a cooking tour of the UK, Jan Lovgreen
and Niels Hansen from Denmark, while goodbyes were said to Doug Maiko
and Sunny Khanna.
Doug made bookends by winning his first and last of this trip with 32
points here today. Sunny Khanna came second on a count back from Niels
Hansen in third, both on 30 points, Mashi Kaneta was fourth on 29 and
Oddur Olafsson took fifth on count back from Ted Morris, Dave Richardson
and Elias Magnusson, all on 27 points.
1st Doug Maiko (16) 32pts
2nd Sunny Khanna (13) 30pts
3rd Niels Hansen (14) 30pts
4th Mashi Kaneta (13) 29pts
5th Oddur Olafsson (12) 27pts
Thursday, October 4, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It was off for a pleasant day at Pleasant Valley, just 43
minutes travel time and we were off the first tee 40 minutes early under
very sunny and steamy conditions. The course on the day was very wet,
like playing on a damp sponge; the front third of the 14th green has
been re-sodded but not marked as GUR but other than that the rest of the
course was in fine condition.
We had a sloshing round of 4 hours and 5 minutes and back in the
clubhouse we welcomed back Mikito Homma from the UK.
The ever steady Mashi Kaneta was the winner today with 40 points, Mike
Winfield was second on 38 and Dave Richardson took third with 34 points.
1st Masi Kaneta (13) 40points
2nd Mike Winfield (20) 38pts
3rd Dave Richardson (25) 34pts
Note: We have Bjarne’s birthday scramble coming up on Monday 5
November at Plutaluang with food and prizes back at the Cafe Kronborg.
The sign-up list goes up on Monday 22 October. If you are looking for a
game of golf while in Pattaya, call Dave at 083 602 2117 or email

Funk master at Phoenix
PSC golf from the Blue Moose Sports Bar
Bruce Funk, left, with runner-up Gerd
Seidel.
Two four-balls teed-off with the Blue Moose on
Wednesday at the Phoenix Golf Course on the Lakes & Ocean layout.
With Monday golf at Pattaya Country Club being cancelled due to the
Giants-Eagles NFL game, our 3 ladies joined us today and they were
chaperoned by Billy Thompson in the second group. The ladies were led by
Oiy St.Laurent who had 29 points. That score was also good enough to
beat her husband, who is stuck at a repeating 27 points. The winner this
week was Bruce Funk with 37 points while Gerd Seidel came in second with
35 and Billy took third with 33 points.
Jomtien golfers take round 1 against Backyard Boys
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Oct. 1, Bangpra –
Stableford
This will be our last game here until next April, unless the
management can provide us with an earlier tee-off time off time.
Heavy rain yet again here in Jomtien overnight and as we made the
journey up the 7, the clouds were condensing and becoming darker in the
distance. The course was empty when we arrived and we teed off 20
minutes ahead of schedule with six groups out, the cut today being 6-16
and 17 plus.
Peter
Grant - from Falklands Isles to podium position at Phoenix in one week.
As the first group teed off on the 6th hole, the stroke index 1, and
walked up the slight gradient to the green, there was thunder and
lightning all around the course. This continued for the next five groups
but almost unbelievably there was no rain whatsoever.
Thirty-four points was the best score of the day, from Dave Richards in
division 1 playing off 10. Paul Hartley came in second three points
behind and Grenville Hill took third with 30.
Peter Grant is back with us for a short holiday and he won division 2
with 32 points ahead of Andy Crabb in second on 30 and in third place
was Don Head who beat Andy Oz on a 16/15 back nine count back after they
both returned scores of 29.
There were murmurs back at Siam Cats at the presentation as to why
should we present prizes for low scores?
Near pins went to Karl Flood, Dave Richards, Wichai Tananusorn, Chris
Voller, Peter Grant, Burnie Sinclair, Willy van Heetvelde and Harry
Vincenzi.
Dave Richards on the 8th, Bryan Rought on the 12th and Wichai on the
17th split the rollover ‘2s pot in division 1 and there was a rollover
in the second division to the following week.
If we had continued with the ladies tipple this would have been won
overwhelmingly by a certain div 1 player. His tee shot on the par-three
12th (using a yellow ball) went into the semi rough on the left hand
side of the green. He walked up and played his second shot to within 6
feet of the pin only to find out the ball he played was half a ball
cracked and was obviously not his. Well done Harry Vincenzi!
Friday, Oct. 5, Eastern Star -
Match Play & Stableford
This was our annual ‘Ryder Cup’ style match against the
Backyard Boys from down the road, comprising 18 holes here today and
then finalizing at the Emerald next Friday. After Jomtien Golf won last
year, the rivalry has been rising in the build up to this year’s event.
There were twelve pairs out today and with the previous day’s rain we
employed a ‘pick, clean and place’ rule on the fairways and fringes
only. The 2 teams of twelve in the matchplay teed off ahead of the 5
stableford and by the ninth hole the extreme heat was beginning to take
its toll, with some players opting for a buggy for the inward nine.
The boys from Jomtien took a decisive lead in this first of two
encounters, going into next Friday’s match at Emerald with an 8½ - 3½
lead. The individual results were as follows (Jomtien players listed
first): Chris Voller v Mike Chatt (won 5/4), Andy Baber v Andy Oz (won
6/5), Rod Howett v Dan Morgan (won 2/1), Uli Bangerter v Jimmy Johnson
(won 4/2), Bryan Rought v Tony Cowe (won 2/1), Joe Kubon v Martin
Anderton (won 4/3), Marty Rock v Russell Benson (won 5/4), Jon Lay v
John McLoone (won 3/2), Mark Armstrong v Terry Cowell (lost 4/3), Paul
Hartley v Darryn (lost 1 up), Don Head v Andy Crabb (lost 4/3), Harry
Vincenzi v Alan Bissell (match halved.)
There were still two divisions out for the men today in the stableford
comp with the cut set at 6-14 and 15 plus, and with a very damp course
this proved to be a tough test of golf today. This was reflected in the
scores with the best of the day coming in division 1 from Mikael
Andersson, winning with just 34points. Ted Gardner was second one point
behind and Bill Bertram took third on 29.
Iain Walsh topped division 2 with 32 points, Willy Van Heetvelde was
second with 30 and Frank Kelly slotted into third with 29.
Toi Blair claimed the ladies division and also the only ‘near pin’ for
the ladies on the 17th. Bill Bertram birdied the 17th in division 1
while Willy Van Heetveld did the same at the 6th in division 2 to claim
the respective ‘2’s pots.
There was some breaking news from Scotland that Fred Duffy is now on the
road to recovery following his operation and we all at Jomtien Golf wish
him well. We will keep you updated on his progress.

Fishing Report
Dene Mundy
Fishing Trip – Saturday, September 20
Well it finally happened! After some two or three months of
bad weather, we had what could only be described as “a perfect day’s
fishing”. The skies were blue, a slight breeze to cool us and calm
waters – what more could we want? Fish! And they too were plentiful.
Only one big 3 kilo grey cod caught but the five of us were kept busy
all day. Some big snapper, several around 1 kilo, our usual pladang and
many larger than usual grouper. Also the yellow tail were biting well.
Charlie
is pictured here with his cod on the Sept. 20 trip.
The scribe claimed champ of the day with over 16 kilos of beautiful, pan
sized, delectable seafood. I admit 4 to 5 kilo were caught by the
skipper but the remainder outweighed the other bag catches.
It was a pity there were only 5 of us on this trip as it was most
definitely the best trip we have had for a long time.
Fishing Trip – Saturday, September 29
After the previous trip in great weather conditions, seven of
us met at Khram Marine fishing lodge a little before 07:00 with heavy
black overcast skies and drizzling rain and pondered a while whether we
would proceed with the trip or cancel it.
We decided to challenge the weather-man and set off in choppy seas
waiting for the heavens to open. During the trip to the fishing grounds
the wind abated and the seas subsided and, by the time we arrived at our
regular spots, conditions were quite pleasant and continued to improve
throughout the day. In fact, we had no rain for the whole day whereas
Pattaya to Bang Saray had showers all day.
Unfortunately, the fish did not cooperate for most of us and all but
Dang had relatively small bag catches to take home. Mine was around 5
kilos whereas Dang had an estimated 15 plus kilos. All the guys just
watched her haul in fish after fish while we were not even getting bites
let alone landing any. We voted to let her off with a warning that if
she wants to come again she is prohibited from catching more than the
male anglers.
October trips - there is one place left on the twentieth and several on
the twenty fifth. For more information call Dene Mundy on Tel. 081 862

Latvian wins two titles at Pattaya arm wrestling championship
Latvian Arturs Dorohus, 2nd left, takes
on Thailand’s four-time champ Ronachai Jitjumnong in 75-85 kg category
final.
Phasakorn Channgam
Latvia’s Arturs Dorohous beat a four-time Thai champion while
taking two titles at the 9th Pattaya International Arm Wrestling
Championship.
The 37-year-old first-time competitor bested Thai champ Ronachai
Jitjumnong in the 75-85 kg. class and Malaysian Alex Tiem Siew in the 85
kg. and up class during the internationally sanctioned meet at Royal
Garden Plaza Sept. 29.
The match attracted more than 100 participants, including “Perfect
Muscle Men” title-holder Joe Boucher of Canada, Rinku Billa of India and
Thai Wittaya Meemui.
The contest adhered to international rules set by the Thailand Arm
Wrestling Association. Wrestlers competed in three divisions with the
winner of each taking home 50,000 baht and prizes from Ripley’s Believe
It or Not!, and the Fairtex Sports Complex. Second-place finishers each
won 5,000 baht.
Suthiwas Kohsamut of Samut Sakorn, 21, beat Bangkok’s Rattanachat
Kongngern, 30, easily in two sets for the under 75 kg. class. The
Latvian won the two other categories while Bangkok’s Rattapol
Mukdasanit, 29, won the popularity prize.
Royal Garden manager Somporn Naksuetrong noted that the competition has
grown steadily over the years and winners have moved onto the
international stage.

Girls on top at Coco Lawn Bowling comp
Tournament winners proudly show off their
trophies at the conclusion of the event.
The Pattaya Indoor Lawn Bowling Triples League & Cup
competitions at the Coco Club came to a conclusion on Friday, Oct. 5 and
it was the Thai girls who took the major honours by winning both events.
In the latter stages of the league - contested over 2 months - there
were six teams in with a chance, showing the competitive and improved
form of many newcomers, but in the end it came down to experience as
Pin, On and Yuppa held off the challenge of Dave (the pro), Kelvin (the
drummer) and ‘Coco’ Sue.
The Cup was all square at 5-all at the half way mark but a 4 shot
winning end by the girls all but sealed it and Lek, Thanom and Pukky ran
out 12-6 winners over “Big” Ken, “Little” Joe and Bank, our only Thai
male player who would certainly be a strong contender for rookie of the
year award!
The buffet and presentations were followed by a party with some new
Frank Ifield, Elvis Presley and other look-a-likes and some very well
regarded but dressed gogo apprentices - who said lawn bowls was old hat.
New players are always welcome at the Coco Club and with reserves
waiting, another league will start soon to join the Tuesday mixed
doubles, Wednesday Aussie brunch, Friday triples and Sunday “out of the
hat” pairs. For more details call Sue on 087 135 8357.

City lose out to league favorites
Bangkok Casuals Football League Div. 1
Paul Frain
After the previous week’s home match had been postponed due to a
waterlogged pitch, Pattatya City were on their travels last weekend to
play the Turkish side Anatolia in Bangkok on yet another very wet
playing surface.
Despite the damp conditions, City made the early running in the game
with Tshuma sending over a few dangerous crosses while at the other end
of the field, Anatolia struck the City woodwork to remind the Pattaya
players, if they needed it, that they taking on one of the top teams in
the division.
This fact was driven home soon after when Anatolia took the lead through
a penalty kick after their forward was brought down in the area and
things got worse for City when they conceded a second goal through some
slack marking in the defence.
The Pattaya outfit knew they had to engineer a way back into the match
before the break and they managed to do just that as Dipta sent a
curling free-kick past the Anatolia keeper and into the net to reduce
the deficit to one goal at half time.
If the first half of the match had been a fairly even contest, the
second half was anything but as the Turkish team laid siege to the
Pattaya goal and repeatedly broke through the visitors’ offside trap
only to be thwarted time and again by the heroics of the City goalkeeper
who kept his team in the game. Eventually, however, even he was
powerless to prevent Anatolia scoring a third and decisive goal that put
a seal on the match.
There was just time for City’s Dipta to go on another mazy run and
create a good chance for Paul Fox, but the latter’s shot flew high over
the bar. Final result: Anatolia 3, Pattaya City 1.

Dolphins suffer league blow

league match at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya, Saturday, Oct. 6.

Pattaya United’s hopes of a top 6 finish took a
severe dent last weekend when they were on the receiving end of a second
half fight-back from TOT FC that saw the visitors run out 3-1 winners at
the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya.
United took the lead on the 20 minute mark with top scorer Ludovick
Takam once more showing his prowess in front of goal as he cleverly
turned his marker to fire a low shot into the far corner of the net.
The Dolphins should have pushed on from this promising start, however
their attack began to falter and they allowed the visitors to gain in
confidence, culminating in an equalizing goal after 68 minutes when
midfielder Nanthasri got free in the Pattaya area to power a header past
goalkeeper Narit.
If the writing wasn’t already on the wall for United it certainly was 2
minutes later as Rithiphan broke through the Pattaya back line to stroke
the ball past Narit and give his team a 2-1 lead.
TOT were reduced to 10 soon after as Mohamed was sent off for dissent,
but the tide of the match had already turned in TOT’s favour and they
went on to add a third goal in injury time as Rithiphan dribbled through
the Pattaya defenders to bag his second of the match.
The Dolphins are now left looking once more over their collective
shoulder as the teams battling relegation seek to close the 6 point gap.
Indeed, just 10 points now separates 11 teams from sixth to sixteenth
positions. United were due make an away trip to Chainat FC this past
midweek and will be back in league action this coming Sunday, Oct. 14
with a home fixture against Bangkok Glass. Kick-off is scheduled for 6
p.m.
