655 million seems small beer
Editor;
Re: Pattaya Farewells the British Ambassador (PM Friday, 03 August 2012)
Regarding UK expat pensions, 655 million seems small beer when compared to
the UK’s contribution to the rotten to the core and corrupt from top to
bottom organization called the European Union, plus the several billion
spent on the obscene money making farce called the Olympic Games which has
still to be paid for. As yet we still do not know how much the British tax
payer is going to have to pay, and how much is Afghanistan costing us not
only in monetary terms but more importantly servicemen’s lives.

Charting the rain
Editor;
As I am an old pensioner with time on my hands the noo, I have been logging
rain fall in Pattaya/Jomtien from the Thai Weather Station. I have
experience in setting up charts, from my previous life in Oil & Gas
Recovery.
I get the information from the National Thai Weather Site,
http://www.tmd.go.th/programs/uploads/cdms/RainAmphor/RainAmphorNational-en.pdf
I take an estimate between Pattaya/Jomtien; it’s an estimate, by me, and
it’s not 100% accurate, but a rough history of past rain. I am not out there
with a measured beaker. I am sure you aware, rain here can be localised.

Shanghai Tower design
is well-thought out
Editor;
Re: CBRE to provide property management services for Shanghai Tower (PM
Friday, 05 October 2012)
Yes, the Shanghai Tower design is well-thought out in design and execution
is going very well, thanks to the chief architect of the tower, Marshall
Strabala’s initial design and weekly concentration on the towers progress
these past 5 yrs.
Strabala was the chief architect and director of design with M. Arthur
Gensler and Associates, for 4 years 2006-2011, whereby he designed the tower
and managed a support staff of 45. Strabala’s stellar experience with
supertalls (designed 3 of the 10 tallest Burj, Nanjing Ziefeng Greenland
Tower, and Shanghai) and his unflinching commitment to client demands and
sustainability, allowed him to open his own arch firm 2Define Architecture
with largest office in Shanghai. Of course, the ST client contracted with
2Define, when Strabala left to open his new firm and fully support him. It
takes incredible design experience and problem solving ability to design
these kinds of icon buildings. Chairman Kong is delighted with Strabala’s
continued contributions ‘til the end of construction. CBRE will have a
wonderful product to offer tenants in Shanghai 2014-2015 thanks to the
design of the tower.

Rude and disrespectful Thais
Editor;
In two days I have had Thais butt in front of me at the food court and be
served ahead of me and at the convenience store they waited on Thais before
me as if I was invisible. Today was the last straw. I went to the theatre on
Second Rd. and handed them my membership card and money for a senior ticket
as I have been for years. The cashier asked for the highest price they had
and I balked. I told him I was almost 70, a senior and wanted the senior
fare; he demanded my passport! I had it but all the info was in the
computer. The signs were there that I was a senior; my appearance and my
U.S. Navy Veteran cap. No respect in Pattaya.

Buying up rice
Editor;
Re: PM shrugs off doomsday warning on rice scheme (PM Thursday, 04 October
2012)
20m tonne in government hands. They are not rice merchants and have paid
above market price to buy it up, with many willing sellers. They are
struggling to sell it by government to government deals but exports have
dropped from 9m to 6m tonnes as they are asking more for it than other major
suppliers. It is alleged that 3m tonnes of stock do not exist at all, and at
15,000 baht per tonne that is 45bn baht in graft. Populist policy but even
more popular with Yingluck, her brother and other cronies getting richer.

For what it’s worth
Editor;
Thank you for publishing my letter ‘Ban rogue jet ski operators’ in your
Friday October 5th Mailbag.
The editor’s note ‘For what it’s worth that’s exactly what City Hall has
started to do this past week - see page 3’ gave me a wry chuckle ‘For what
it’s worth’ is the exact right phrase to use!
A picture of the Jet Ski Committee launching a snap beachfront inspection
does not fill me with confidence that anything concrete will actually be
done, more likely the usual window dressing, smoke and mirrors Thailand is
famous for.
I remember seeing a picture of the mayor inspecting the built-over and
clogged drainage canal near the Camelot Hotel in Pratamnak Road, South
Pattaya about 3 years ago and he said, ‘Offenders have been given 3 months
to remove illegal buildings so we can dredge the canal. I believe it being
clogged is the main reason for part of Sukhumvit road becoming flooded
whenever we have unusually heavy rain.”
I went past it the other day - surprise surprise - it looked exactly the
same as it did way back then, and I bet the hotel opposite who built over
the canal have not done anything either. I think I am right in saying that
efforts to remove illegal restaurants built out over the sea on the other
side of Walking Street have been going on for over 15 years without much
success, so I am not holding my breath that anything concrete will be done
to reign in the rogue jet ski operators.
Pardon my skepticism!
Best wishes to Pattaya Mail,
Rick Walton
