Regent’s Presents... Richard Sobol

Richard Sobol captivates the
audience with riveting life stories.
Alicia Warner
Following the success of Professor Deborah Eyre’s presentation early this
month, this week the school saw the return of Regent’s Presents... a series
of presentations that welcome guest speakers from all walks of life. Its
revival began by welcoming Richard Sobol - The Travelling Photographer - who
is an accomplished photojournalist with an impressive body of work, tying in
successfully with the celebration of World Animal Day on Thursday.
He graduated from Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts
University and has since used the art of photography to visit 31 countries
(and counting) and produce visual narratives. His work has been published in
the likes of Time magazine and National Geographic. He currently
concentrates on his own projects that include book production and
documentary work that bring many of the world’s issues to light.
During his visit he interacted with many of the students across the school
and was impressed with the enquiring and thoughtful nature of the Regent’s
students. Asking questions with subject matters that ranged from animal
conservation to his own personal achievements, Sobol was not short of topics
to talk about.
He said, “I’ve found the questions have been challenging and numerous so
it’s clearly an inquisitive student body. The welcome here has been great.”
The Globe Theatre saw students, parents and staff arrive to fulfill their
curiosity as to what an individual with a 30 year career in photography
would have to offer in their presentation. It was in no time at all that it
became apparent that Richard Sobol had led an incredibly interesting life,
following his passion from the young age of 15.
“I started early doing photography - when I was about 15 or 16,” he
explained, “I knew that I wasn’t going to make it in a corporate lifestyle;
putting on a suit and tie every morning and going to an office. I wanted to
make sure I was doing something I loved.”
Sobol introduced his world to the Globe audience by creating a visual
narrative; they shared what he has had the opportunity to see through his
lenses over his years of experience. From his encounters from illegal
wildlife trading to his opportunity to see the creation of an innovative
building at MIT, he told his tales with passion as if the love for his
career has never faded; something that many of us aspire to be able to say
the same.
So how can we reach his level of achievement? Simply put: “Don’t give up -
you just have to get better,” Richard Sobol explained with a smile.
“Start photographing things that interest you and that will get you a long
way in terms of differentiating yourself from all the other thousands - now
in the digital age hundreds of thousands - of photographers. So find
something that you really care about or that you’re really passionate
about.”

A fun golf tournament where the individual can make a difference

Needy children being looked after in Mae Sot.
Dr. Iain Corness
With sponsorship from AustCham, the very active Women with a Mission
is holding its fourth annual Charity Golf Tournament on Friday 19 October at
the famous Phoenix Golf Club.
As Bronwyn Carey, one of the three Women with a Mission pointed out, this is
a ‘real’ golf tournament providing a competitive outing, as well as being a
fun day for individual golfers or teams of four.
‘Fun’ items include a Samsung Galaxy tablet (donated by dtac) for the first
hole in one on a par three hole, plus accommodation packages in Pattaya,
Khao Lak, Si Kao and the Golden triangle (with one package worth B. 90,000),
an iPhone 4S, vouchers for many restaurants in Pattaya, including the
Mantra, sailing lessons, golf gear, an Ocean Marina sunset cruise, check-up
packages from the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and Jelly Belly gift baskets.
These Women with a Mission (Rosanne Diamente, Kylie Grimmer, Bronwyn Carey)
believe that education of needy children is the key to opening the door for
their future, but as their work in this area began to encompass more groups
of children they found that for education to happen, these children needed
feeding and a roof over their heads. Currently they are supplying 750 meals
every day preparing needy youngsters to be fit enough to receive that
education.
This golf tournament is their way to raise funds to provide that education,
meals and housing and is their only major fund-raising event, and is one
that deserves your support.
The Friday 19 tournament at the Phoenix Golf Course has a shotgun start at
noon (registration 11 a.m. until 11.45 a.m.) and has a B. 3,500 individual
entry or B. 14,000 for a team of four includes the green fee, caddy, goody
bag, tournament golf shirt and admission to the AustCham’s Sundowners
networking event at the Holiday Inn in Pattaya (cart and tip not included).
The Women with a Mission firmly believe that individuals can make a
difference, and entering this golf tournament does make a great difference
for the needy children being cared for by them, both along the Thai-Burma
border and in Chonburi for special needs children such as those born with
cerebral palsy.
You can contact Paul Wilkinson (JVK Movers) on 081 903 9477; Kylie Grimmer

October 16 is
World Food Day
Derek Franklin
The annual World Food Day is celebrated each year in more than one hundred
and fifty countries with the aim of raising awareness of poverty and hunger
amongst the poor and underprivileged in society.
World
Food Day - your help is needed.
The Father Ray Foundation feeds eight hundred and fifty underprivileged
children and students with disabilities each day, every day, three hundred
and sixty five days a year. The cost of providing a well balanced diet,
which will ensure the children are receiving the nutrients they need to
grow, is increasing almost every week.
Environmental issues, such as floods and drought, have affected the
production of crops in Thailand and abroad, leading to an increase in the
cost of basic foods.
At the same time, the worldwide financial crisis, together with a strong
local currency, has seen a reduction in the amount of money that arrives at
the Foundation from foreign donors.
Therefore, the Father Ray Foundation is appealing to the people of Pattaya
to donate essential food items on World Food Day, which this year is held on
Tuesday the 16th October.
Donations of dried noodles, cooking oil, milk, sugar, fish sauce, canned
fish and salt can be made at the Father Ray Foundation Welcome Center,
located on Sukhumvit Road between Central and North Pattaya Roads.
On World Food Day your donation will ensure the children of Pattaya can
continue to receive a nutritious and well balanced diet.
More information about the work of the Father Ray Foundation can be found at
www.fr-ray.org or email [email protected]
