Pattaya School No. 7 students of all ages are kicking up
their heels in a new school-wide aerobics program that could see some youths
win a spot in national competitions.
Principal Manas Khongwattana launched student aerobics
with funding from the Pattaya Health Insurance Fund following the success of
aerobics classes for teachers and parents.
Run by teachers Sapienthong Namphet and Omlawan Chinfan,
the youth aerobics encourage students, from kindergarten through high school
to exercise and improve their health in an activity that occupies their free
time and keeps them away from drugs.
Sapienthong said she will select the best of the aerobics
dancers to participate in the royally backed To Be No. 1 dancercise program,
whose stated goal is to promote exercise as a diversion from drug use.
Kids participating seemed to enjoy it.
“I feel healthier after having done aerobics,” said
junior-high student Nares Nachaoren. “I get to have fun with my friends and
it is not a dangerous activity that is different from other sports.”
