Officials temporarily closed a Sriracha icehouse after an ammonia leak sickened area residents.

A Sriracha icehouse was closed after an ammonia leak sickened area residents.

Deputy District Chief Priewphan Singthongchai and Chonburi Public Health Department officers inspected the Suksawat Icehouse on Kilo Kao Road in Surasak Jan. 17, the day after ammonia used in ice processing spilled into a nearby aqueduct.

Residents reported breathing problems and fled the area until the smell cleared. The Kan Ban Dek nursery school also closed for a day amid concerns over the leak.

Officers confirmed the leak came from the icehouse and ordered it closed for three days until repairs could be made the facility inspected again.
