Disgusting entrance to Dongtan Beach Jomtien

Dear Editor;

Some weeks ago I wrote in Mailbag that the building site on display in all its dreadful glory at the entrance to Dongtan Beach was not very conducive the image the Tourist Authority is trying to portray of Jomtien.

I wrote to the mayor’s office and the Environmental Dept at city hall, as well as the Tourist Authority weeks ago - No response from any of them. Surprise, surprise!

I also wrote to the lord and lady of Dongtan Beach, Deborah and Paisan at Rabbit Resort, asking them if they had any influence with any of the aforementioned offices, as I would have thought Rabbit customers having to pass that mess to get to Rabbit would not be desirable from their point of view; again no response.

Someone must know who the site in front of Jomtien Complex twin Towers down to the beach belongs to and whose workers are housed there.

Just putting up some sort of screening on the fence would be of some help if the site owners were shamed into doing just that.
Best wishes,
Richard Walton

Thank you marathon sponsors

Dear Pattaya Mail,

Just a short note. I am a foreign journalist, working in Asia with a home here in Jomtien. I have created a contribution fund for this year’s Pattaya Marathon, and have succeeded in convincing around 25 global financial firms and individuals to contribute money to match my contribution to the Pattaya Orphanage based upon the distance I run in Sunday’s Queen’s Cup Marathon here in Pattaya. So far the fund is at 310,000 baht in commitments against my possible completion of the marathon. I hope to raise 400,000 baht when all the commitments are in, but we have broken the 300k level just yesterday.

I’m not seeking any self promotion, but it would be wonderful if the Mail could give recognition to the 30 odd individuals and organizations from America and Great Britain who are so generously donating funds to the orphanage and its 750 kids.

You can verify any of this with the assistant director at the orphanage, Brother Dennis Gervais: [email protected]

I’ve attached a list of the donor organizations and individuals at present.

Harbourvest, Blicksilver PR, Focus Ventures, InterWest Partners, Thomson Financial, Apax, Jerry Borrell, Long Life Club, Howard, Rice, CDC, Cypress Semiconductor, DCM Capital Mgmt, DFJ, Bertram, Oak Investments, Duke University, Love Goel, Digital Chocolate, TIF Ventures, H&Q Asia, Silicon Valley Bank, Kurzweil Associates, FuelOn, Baker & McKenzie, T.J. Rogers, Cypress Semiconductor, Sharon Rowlands, Actis, Semiconductor Industry Association, Alta Partners, Lombard Capital, Bridge Ventures, Walden International, Warburg Pincus, Crystal Ventures, The Carlyle Group, Sierra Ventures, Zyvex Corporation.

Thank you,
Jerry Borrell

Marathon records obsolete?

Dear Sirs:

I see from a leaflet on Pattaya’s Marathon that the course record is listed as 2 hours, 26 minutes and 6 seconds set by Kenichi Kawakubo (Japan) in the year 2000. Now this year’s race started and finished on the new Bali Hai Pier for the first time. Previous marathons in Pattaya started and finished near Soi 4 on Beach Road. As the Bali Hi pier and the new network of roads around the Royal Cliff area did not exist in 2000, surely the race is now held over a new course? I submit that the listed course records of 2:26:06 and 2:51:49 (Women, 2003) are therefore redundant.

In watching this year’s event early on Sunday (the 17th) I must pay tribute to the vast army of unpaid helpers who work tirelessly to ensure that the race goes smoothly. These people get up very early on race day to work on tasks from manning water stations to handing out medals to all finishers and they do so cheerfully and without complaint. Well done again, Pattaya City Council and all others involved for staging a fine event that is part sport and part folk festival.
