With Thailand tourism floundering, the Pattaya Floating Market is trying
to spark business by offering daily sea boxing matches.
Manager Asanan Sriviroj announced the promotion also aimed at preserving Thai
culture Jan. 15. The competitions began at the beginning of the year, with two
matches daily at 3.30pm and 5.30pm. Finalists from each month will complete in a
year-end competition in hopes of taking home part of 100,000 baht in prize
money.
Sea boxing, or “Muay Talay” in Thai, sees boxers sit on a pole suspended over
water. The match ends when the first boxer gets wet. The competition is open to
Thais and foreigners ages 18-30 years old.
Monthly finalists will take home 500-10,000 baht. Overall champs will win
10,000-30,000 baht.
