Skål International joins International Council of Tourism Partners
as partner association
Andrew J Wood,
President of Skๅl International Thailand and Director of Worldwide
Destinations Asia Co., Ltd.
The International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) is
pleased to announce that Skๅl International has joined the alliance as a
partner association.
Skๅl International was founded in 1934, and is an
international association of travel and tourism professionals. Skๅl, as an
international organization of industry leaders, is a powerful force in the
travel and tourism industry to initiate change and encourage the
conservation of the environment in order to promote tourism and travel.
ICTP chairman, Juergen T. Steinmetz, said: “Skๅl values
sustainable development as the key to the industry’s future success and
considers ecotourism but one area of the various components of sustainable
development. It is a tourism organization which cares about the possible
implications of its activities and recognizes its responsibility in
developing and operating in such a manner as to contribute positively in the
protection and preservation of natural, social, and cultural environments.”
Following the United Nations declaration of 2002 as the
Year of Ecotourism and the Mountains, Skๅl International launched the
Ecotourism Awards in the same year to highlight and acknowledge best
practices around the globe.
Karine Coulanges, vice-president of Skๅl International,
is very proud to now be a partner and recognizes ICTP’s actions. She said,
“Because ICTP is present in countries and regions where Skๅl International
is not established today, we see great development opportunities for
creating new clubs, especially in Africa, to help the countries to develop
their international tourism.”
The awards presented on these grounds, while highlighting
best practices in tourism around the world, also serve the purpose of
acquainting the world with this new concept that puts emphasis on the
importance of the interaction of the physical, cultural, and social
environments; the traveler’s responsibility; and the need for active
community participation in ecotourism.
Skๅl recognizes and accepts responsibility to operate in
such a way as to continuously decrease the impact of its activities on the
environment, to provide benefits to the communities which host these
activities, and to ensure the well-being of local societies and the
sustainability of destinations so that they can be enjoyed by future
generations.

TAT prepares to adopt new strategy for fear of Euro crisis
as partner association
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has instructed
all TAT offices in Europe to monitor the Euro-debt crisis and will devise a
new strategy to protect Thai tourism from a decline in European tourists.
Jutaporn Roengronasa, TAT Deputy Governor of Europe,
Africa, Middle East and America Markets said the TAT offices in Europe have
been told to report weekly on the economic situation in Europe to prepare
Thai tourism for the impact of a financial crisis.
The TAT will have to find a new approach to maintain the
level of tourists if the European economy begins to take its toll on
Thailand. Despite fears, the number of European tourists coming to Thailand
during the first 5 months of this year increased around 7-8%.
According to Jutaporn, the TAT has also reported that
many foreign tourists opted to visit Thailand instead of the United States
or Africa, which is a good opportunity for the Thai tourism to thrive.
She further explained that the TAT is now focusing on
increasing niche markets and high-end tourists such as those who are
interested in golf, wellness, spa and romantic getaways. These people are
mostly from Britain, Italy, German, Scandinavia, Russia, and the
Commonwealth of Independent States. (NNT)

revenue to 2 trillion baht by 2015, the TAT is determined to find new
markets with high potential and introduce new promotion campaigns to reach
target travelers.
The TAT also plans to negotiate with overseas travel
agencies to fly charter flights from many Russian cities that don’t
currently have direct flights to Thailand, in order to bring in more
holidaymakers from the country.
Juthaporn added that the latest gimmick, which the TAT
has invested 3 million baht to develop, is the Lifestyle Thailand smartphone
application, which is available both in Thai and English.
She said that the new app is intended to reach out to
lifestyle travelers and meet new-generation travelers’ demand for new
holiday experiences.
With the TAT’s latest app, more than 300 choices of
well-selected brands, which range from hotels to restaurants and holiday
destinations, along with special discounts of 20-50 percent, are up for
