Russian arrested in gold necklace theft

Owner Araya Lertkitsathaporn (left) and tourist police volunteers managed to detain Alexander Trofimenko.

Boonlua Chatree

Pattaya Tourist Police arrested a Russian man caught allegedly trying to steal a gold necklace worth more than 100,000 baht.

Officers arrived at the King Star Jewelry shop on Walking Street March 25 where Alexander Trofimenko, 23, was being detained by tourist police volunteers. Around his neck was an 8 baht-weight necklace, still bearing a store price tag.

Owner Araya Lertkitsathaporn, 63, told police Trofimenko had pretended to be a customer interested in the thick necklace, then asked to see another. When she turned to retrieve the second piece of jewelry, the Russian tried to flee, she said.

Trofimenko was said to confess to the crime and is now awaiting prosecution on robbery charges.
