Singmanee strike salvages a point for United

the second half of their match at the Pichit Stadium, Sunday, April 3.

Staff reporters
Pattaya United made the long trip north last Sunday to
take on Thai Premier League rivals TTM Pichit, with the ‘Dolphins’ looking
to rebound from their defeat at the hands of Buriram PEA the previous
weekend.
United were buoyed by the return of star forward Ludovick
Takam to the starting line-up although coach Jatuporn elected to play the
Cameroonian in a lone striking role supported by a 5-man midfield.
The hosts meanwhile made the surprise decision to leave
their standout Korean striker Yeon Gi Zong on the bench and replace him in
attack with Kraikitti In-Uten.
The same player nearly gave Pichit the lead in just the
second minute of the match when a clever one-two with a teammate gave him
space for a shot, but his effort was well saved by Narit in the Pattaya goal
and although Jooyong volleyed in the rebound he was adjudged to have been
offside.
United were slow to read the danger signals however and
just five minutes later Pichit took the lead when a 40 yard cross field ball
from Chokmanotham caught the Pattaya defence completely flat-footed and Kim
Jooyong was left with all the time in the world to fire his shot past Narit
into the bottom corner of the goal.
United responded and had the ball in their opponents’ net
just two minutes later but Somchai Singmanee was disappointed to see his
solo effort also ruled out by the linesman’s flag.
In contrast to the frantic opening minutes of the game,
the remainder of the first half was rather an anticlimax with both teams
struggling to find openings in each other defences. The half time whistle
came with the hosts still leading one goal to nil.
United appeared to have been galvanized by their
half-time team talk, coming out in determined mood for the second period and
they were able to get back on level terms on the hour mark.
Midfielder Ittipol Poolsap started the move with a break
into the Pichit half before he sent a speculative cross from the right
midfield area into the hosts’ penalty box. The Pichit defence appeared to
hesitate for a second too long allowing Somchai Singmanee to gather the
ball, attack the right back and send a rasping left foot shot past the
Pichit keeper You Hyon and into the roof of the net.
United pressed forward from the restart and were unlucky
not to take the lead when Siriwong’s long distance effort struck the Pichit
woodwork and rebounded to safety.
The hosts also had a good chance to claim all three
points late on but Tanat’s fierce curling shot flew just over the Pattaya
crossbar with Narit left scrambling across his goal.
The final whistle sounded soon after to end the match
with both teams having to be content with one point apiece.
United were due to play a Thai Premier League home
fixture against Navy FC this past Wednesday and this coming weekend will
take a trip to Samut Songkram to take on sixth placed SCG, with United just
one point behind in the standings at press time.
While United were battling to a draw in Pichit last
weekend, second placed Chonburi ‘Sharks’ wrapped up a comfortable 2-0
victory over bottom placed Navy FC to maintain the pressure on leaders
Buriram, who were held to a goalless draw at defending champions Muang Thong
United. Chonburi’s goals came either side of half time from Serbian Darko
Rakocevic and Japanese star Kazudo Kushida.
Near neighbours Sri Racha FC had another disappointing
weekend however as they lost one nil at home to Insee Police United and they
have now dropped into the bottom three.

2 foreign Thai league football
players caught in drug sting

The two Cameroonian football players are
arrested
by police at their south Pattaya apartment.
Boonlua Chatree
Two Cameroonian Thai football league players were
arrested in Pattaya after allegedly selling two grams of crystal
methamphetamine to an undercover police officer.
Nana Nembot Delys, a reserve player for the Rayong club,
and Munji Yannick Tita of Ratchaburi FC were taken into custody at the N & P
Apartment in South Pattaya’s Rungland Village April 1.
The two 23-year-old footballers allegedly gave a female
undercover officer two 0.97 g. packs of ya ice for 4,000 baht. A subsequent
search of their room on Soi Pormprapanimit unearthed almost another gram of
ya ice as well as plastic bags used to sell it.
Police said Delys told them he was in Pattaya to try out
for the Pattaya United team, as he did not play often for his Rayong club
side due to injuries from a car crash. He claimed a drug dealer left the ya
ice in his room and he only sold the drugs because he was short on cash.
A Pattaya United Football Club executive denied Delys was
a team member and the Cameroonian was charged with possession of a Class 1
narcotic.
Tita said he met his fellow countryman through league
play and that they went out to party in Pattaya every night. He was released
after passing a drug test.

JJ stops Broken Wing’s winning streak
Golf from The Backyard Golf Society
An early start this week as we decided to tee off at 9 a.m. instead of 9.30
to see if we could avoid any groups between ourselves and the Beaver Bar.
Nine players in all competitions and the early start was
justified when we all finished in under 4 hours.
JJ managed to stop Broken Wing’s domination over the past
couple of weeks by beating him on count-back after they both came in with 34
points.
Geoff finished his trip of in style by taking the nearest
the pin prize and we wish him all the best on his extended holiday in the
UK. Skins results were as follows: Dangle (4), Broken Wing (4), Andy Oz (3),
JJ (1), Geoff (1), John Mac (1), Martyn (1) with one rollover for next week.
After prize giving it was down to BC for a double
celebration as it was Geoff’s birthday as well as Ya‘s daughter. Thanks go
to Ya at Senorita’s Bar for laying on food and drink which was thoroughly
enjoyed by all.

Fortt making waves
in Thailand superbikes
Barry Russell
In a busy paddock at the R2M Superbikes second round
at the Thailand Circuit on Sunday 27th March, 17
year-old Ben Fortt stood out. The tall youngster from Pattaya has a
British dad, Keith, and a Thai mum, Goy, and has been riding bikes since
he was old enough to reach the handlebars. He started racing in
motocross before moving to supermoto three years ago, which he continues
into this season while also realising his dream of racing a full
superbike.

Ben
Fortt, right, takes a corner on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 superbike at the
Thailand Circuit, Sunday, March 27. (Photo/Champ Yusuwat)
His immaculate black Suzuki GSX-R1000 was bought from
a Thai-based British racer and has only had three previous outings. It
has clearly been well-prepared and the engine looks to be one of
Suzuki’s finest, having watched Ben fighting to keep the front wheel
down as he came out of corners.
Rain during qualifying on Saturday saw Ben sit out
the session in the paddock as the newly acquired bike did not have a set
of wet tyres, so on Sunday he started at the back of the grid, in 17th
place for the SB3 race. However, when the red lights went out, the lack
of track time didn’t show. He made up four places at the first corner
and worked his way through the field to finish fifth with a fast, mature
ride.
Except for being hit from behind by another rider who
out-braked himself and then crashed, he appeared to have everything
completely under control. When I spoke to him in the paddock after the
race, he was grinning from ear-to-ear and looking forward to the next
race.
Ben is a talented young racer with a cool head and
who clearly benefits from the guidance and support of his family. We
look forward to watching his progress throughout the season.

GIS win ESAC Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament in convincing fashion

The GIS Storm Varsity team, blue shirts, in
action at the ESAC Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament held at Regents
School, Saturday, April 2.
Doug Lynch
The Storm Varsity boys got the 2011 ESAC tournament at
Regents School off to a great start with a dominating performance against
ISE last Saturday morning.
All seven players would score and GIS would cruise to a
61-9 victory.
The Storm would capitalize on numerous ISE turnovers to
build leads of 14-3 after the first quarter and 29-3 at halftime.
GIS would continue scoring at will in the second half.
Their strong defence would lead to many fast break baskets and a 43-3 lead
at the end of three quarters.
Nic Neufeld would lead all scorers with 18 points in just
16 minutes of playing time.
Thomas Cercleron had one of his best games of the season
scoring 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting.
Mark Hemi and Ben Mayley each added seven points while
Rain Lee and Air Chaiyagunkit scored six points apiece off the bench.
Martin Turner would chip in two points to round out the
scoring.
With the win, their 13th of the season, GIS broke their
previous mark of 12 set in 2007/08. ...The 61 points scored and 52 point
margin of victory were also new team records. ...GIS would shoot 63% from
the field, by far, their best shooting performance of the year.
After cruising through their semi final contest against
ISE, the Storm would not be denied in the Championship game later in the
day.
Nic Neufeld took control of a fairly close game early in
the fourth quarter to lead GIS to a 52-30 victory over Regents. In his best
overall game of the year, Nic would score a career high 37 points to lead
all scorers. He would shoot 13-of-22 from the field and 11-of-13 from the
free throw line, but it was his leadership at the defensive end of the court
that was most impressive.
Thomas Cercleron dished out numerous assists to go along
with his nine points while Ben Mayley would score four points and Mark Hemi
would add two points.
GIS would lead 13-4 after one quarter, 24-13 at the half
and 32-22 through three quarters.
Regents would cut the lead to eight points in the third
quarter but that would be as close as they would get.
Even though GIS were out rebounded by the taller Regent’s
players, their overall team defence was outstanding. They prevented the ball
from getting inside to the Regents big players and forced them into some
sloppy turnovers which led to some easy fast break baskets.
The ESAC Championship concluded another winning season
for the Storm. Their 14 wins are the highest in school history.

City left waiting after a comfortable win
MBMG International Football League Div. 1 & 2
Paul Frain
Pattaya City played their final league game of the season
last Saturday and although unbeaten in six games they still had to win this
game to have any chance of retaining the championship as the Londoner had
beaten third placed Black Swan 1-0 to keep on level terms with Pattaya. This
was not going to be an easy match as City’s opponents Siam Celtic beat
Cosmos, so they could not be underestimated.
City, knowing what was required, put Celtic under
pressure early on and Tshuma went close after a great ball from Lowe. City’s
dynamo Dipita then beat four defenders and saw his shot spectacularly saved
by a Celtic defender on the line.
Pattaya kept up the pressure, but two good saves by the
Celtic keeper kept the scores level, however almost immediately City’s
Mbouyom ran down the right and delivered a defense splitting ball to the
unmarked Dipita who slotted the ball home to make it 1-0 to the home team.
Good runs by Mbouyom and Tshuma on the wings provided
more chances for City but they were wasted. The hosts were given a wake-up
call when Celtic hit the side netting and almost immediately the game was
tied at 1-1 when a Celtic forward was left unmarked at a corner and he made
no mistake to level the match.
Just before half time City came close to retaking the
lead but Alan Mulberry’s blockbusting header was spectacularly saved on the
line with the ball rebounding to the same City player only for the same
defender to stop a certain goal. Half time arrived with the sides tied at
1-1.
City started to get their act together in the second half
and when they received a free kick on the right Tshuma’s delivery was inch
perfect for Philip Walter to head home and make it 2-1 to the hosts.
The Pattaya team then went further ahead after a three
man move left Mbouyom the easiest of chances to score into an empty net to
make the score 3-1. City were now on top of their opponents and Denis
Matveer was unlucky to see his lob over the keeper rebound off the post and
out to safety.
The home team scored their fourth and final goal when
John Campbell and captain Craig Banks exchange passes with the latter
scoring the goal of the match with a thundering volley to give City an
unassailable lead. Celtic had little to offer as they were finding the pace
too hot but they managed to hold out without conceding another goal until
the final whistle.
City now have to wait for the result of the Londoner’s
final match this coming weekend to see who will finish as champions this
season.
Pattaya City
Reserves back to winning ways
Pattaya City Reserves are having to catch up with their
fixtures and still had three matches to play to complete their season.
City Reserves played Bangkok Storm last weekend looking
for their first win in five games and they took the lead in just the second
minute as a volley out of the blue from Athachai found the back of the net.
This was the start City wanted and after a lot of pressure it wasn’t long
before they scored a second with a low hard shot from outside the penalty
area by Supachal Kunchuen to make it 2-0.
Bangkok retaliated with isolated attacks but without much
threat as their finishing was poor and when they did break through, City’s
Brian Wilkins was there to block a goal-bound shot.
Just as half time was approaching Bangkok had their best
spell when City’s keeper was forced into making a good save and a long range
shot went just over the City bar.
After the half time break City put pressure on the
Bangkok goal and a perfect lob by City’s Kunchuen over the keeper saw them
increase their lead to 3-0.
City Reserves were now in full control with Glenn Wilkins
pulling the strings as they piled more pressure on the Bangkok goal whose
defense was working overtime, and it was no surprise when City went further
ahead as Terry Wilcox’s cross was headed home by Kunchuen for his hat trick.
Bangkok Storm managed a consolation goal before the final
whistle to make the score 4-1 but it was a comfortable win by City who
blooded a number of younger players in their team with one eye on the
future. A couple more performances and results like this in City Reserves
final two home matches will see them finish with a good league placing.

Hits just keep on coming
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Over the last few weeks we have played courses which have
been presented in possibly the best condition in recent memory. This week
was no exception as we played at Khao Kheow and Pattana, very different
courses, but both in superb condition.
Tuesday, March 29, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Tuesday’s test was the A & B layout at Khao Kheow from
the yellow tees; maybe the best combination of any. Jeff Wylie (7) led the
way with a fine 38 points, continuing his recent return to form. Next best
was Ken Hole (16) with 32 points.

Martin
Hayes was a ‘near pin’ winner at Khao Kheow.
Near pins were shared around between Jeff, Ken & Martin,
while Banglamung Boys Home benefitted from one also.
Thursday, March 31,
Pattana - Stableford
Thursday was a visit to Pattana, the A & B nines, in that
order, to be our challenge. It’s an intimidating shot the drive off B1,
especially first up for the day, while the A layout is not so bad.
Again it was Jeff Wylie (7) leading the way with an
outstanding 43 points, ahead of Iain Painter (19) with 30 in second, while
Chris Hart (25) got third place money with 28 points after edging Ken Hole
on count-back 14/12.
Near pins were picked up by Jeff, Ian Hart, “The
Specialist” (his words, not mine) got 2, with the other resulting in a
donation to the Banglamung Boys Home.
For those regular readers of results they will often see
references to Banglamung Boys Home, the Mulligans Lakeside’s designated
charity. April 28 will see a special Charity Day sponsored by Mulligans
Lakeside which promises to be a good day so if you are interested in a day
of golf, some entertainment afterwards, while supporting a good cause, give
us a call on our usual numbers for more details.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday).
Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside
hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc.,
please call 089 094 1841 or 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers &
Good Golfing!

Mod makes it a double
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Barry Hooper
Last week was what you might call a bit “cold and damp”.
In my four years now of reporting on the golf here I cannot remember such a
week. However, having said that it did not deter our hardier members from
turning out to play.

Winners
on Monday at Emerald: Mod Chaviraksa, Brendan Moore and Fergus Brennan.
(Inset - Fergus receives his hole in one award from Candy at Emerald).
Although numbers are now down now after the departure of
many players from their winter breaks we still have our regular hardcore
bunch that turn out week after week. It gave a few of them an opportunity to
shine and get in the winning circle and it’s always nice to see some of the
also-rans having a little success.
Some weeks ago, back on February the 14 to be precise,
Fergus Brennan obtained his second hole in one at Emerald (on the 7th
hole). I was sent a photo this week of the presentation made to him by Candy
on behalf of the Emerald management to honour this achievement and thought
it was only right to make mention of it again. Most amateur golfers go
through life never attaining a single hole in one, so two is some
achievement and quite rightly worthy of recognition. Thank you Emerald and
congratulations yet again Fergus!
Saturday, March 26,
Greenwood - Stableford
Saturday we went to Greenwood and played the A & C
courses. Sixteen players made the journey and competed in one division. The
weather this day was pleasant and allowed for some good play with Mike
Rushant topping out the listings with his even par round, but only just
squeaking in by virtue of a count-back over Ed Brubaker.
Fergus Brennan was third on 34 points and he seems to be
on top of his game at the moment and has been playing pretty consistent golf
since his hole in one success in early February.
Because it was only the one division a fourth place was
awarded and this went to Richard Moore.
1st Mike Rushant (12) 36pts
2nd Ed Brubaker (11) 36pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (10) 34pts
4th Richard Moore (25) 32pts
Monday, March 28, The Emerald - Stableford
We visited Emerald for our start to the week and the
course was a little damp after the early morning rain but played well. This
course seems to drain very well and was subsequently still enjoyed by all
present. It was a very cool day and mention was made by many a player that
they had never broken into a sweat. That is very unusual for this part of
the world.
We were low in numbers but high in quality, only twelve
players took part so a single division was arranged.
It was two 36’s that topped the chart but as usual there
can only be one winner; this time that honour went to Brendan Moore, he had
just one more (20) on the back nine to Fergus’s 19 so pushing him down to
second place.
One of our stalwart regular lady players picked up third
spot with thirty-four. I am of course referring to the lovely Mod
Chaviraksa.
1st Brendan Moore (11) 36pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (10) 36pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (14) 34pts
Tuesday, March 29, Khao Kheow - Stableford
There were just eleven players on Tuesday at Khao Kheow
so just the one division. The numbers dropped off dramatically this week and
I am sure that the weather had played its part as well. The course was wet
(surprise, surprise) after the early rain which kept pouring down. But it
suited that lady again Mod Chaviraksa who came home with 35 points for top
spot. She was followed home by Mike Rushant at 33 in second who was just not
quite able to repeat his Saturday performance.
A visitor to the TRGG, Gus MacKinnion, was third on 30
points and that goes to show how tricky things were when a score this low
picks up a top three placing.
1st Mod Chaviraksa (14) 35pts
2nd Mike Rushant (12) 33pts
3rd Gus MacKinnion (17) 30pts
Thursday, March 31, Phoenix - Stableford
Twenty two players, split into two divisions, showed up
on Thursday for a round over the Phoenix Lakes and Ocean course. It was once
more a little damp underfoot after the early morning rain but the weather
was quite cool and ideal for golf.
Well just what can one say about Mod Chaviraksa, that
lovely lady who plays regularly with us at the TRGG, that has not already
been said? Good looking and talented and this outing really was no exception
because she fired in the biggest score of the week, 43 points, to take the
second division win and her second consecutive win of the week. She was a
full six up on any of the opposition in either division. Thirty sevens were
the closest to her from Bill McGarvie after he fought off Roger Wilkinson on
count-back for the top spots in Div 1, and Ken Brehm for second place in Div
2.
The also-rans and third places went to Fergus in Div 1
with 36 and Nino Dinardo in Div 2 with his 32.
A Flight
1st Bill McGarvie (9) 37pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (13) 37pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (10) 36pts
B Flight
1st Mod Chaviraksa (14) 43pts
2nd Ken Brehm (21) 37pts
3rd Nino
Dinardo (16) 32pts
Note: If you want any further or fuller
information about the golf outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers
Rest Hotel, please contact the hotel manager Tewin Lamthong on 086 056 7019
or call in to the Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro, Pattaya and look at the
notice board, or visit their website at www.trgg.biz.

Beilby & Buchanan blitz Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, March 28, Burapha
- Stableford
We played the A and B loops off the blue tees today with
a smaller than usual team of just 14 and as carts were not allowed on the
fairway, it was ‘lift clean and place’ - even though it wasn’t really needed
as the course wasn’t that wet.
Everybody knows by now that I am a big fan of this course
but it just gets better; it was in great condition and played quite benign
as you will see by the scores. Maybe the Pro-Am coming up on the 4th May
might have something to do with that also.

Friday’s
winners: Dave Buchanan and Eddie Beilby.
It was remarked by one of the players that I must be
getting old; I hit my Sunday best on the 8th and 9th and couldn’t make it to
the green. I think that statement applies to a lot of us.
There was nobody else on the course that we saw anyway,
so I would assume that the rates for golf will soon be on the way down.
The winner today was Murray Hart, playing off 14, with a
fantastic 42 points, followed home by ‘moi’ with 40 and Jimmy Brackett with
39. In addition there were three more players who all shot better than
handicap; Owen Walkley (38pts) and Peter Stonebridge & John Bahng who both
had 37’s.
There were four ‘2’s from Bob Philp, Jim Brackett, Peter
Larsson & John Bahng.
1st Murray Hart (14) 42pts
2nd Bob Philp (10) 40pts
3rd James Brackett (7) 39pts
4th Owen Walkley (11) 38pts
Tuesday, March 29, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Another unbelievably cold day for the 16 Outbackers – and
with some fairly ordinary scoring.
The 37 points from the improving Jinjo O’Neill was enough
for him to win Div B, from Nigel Cannon on 35 in second, whilst Barry
Chadbourn won Div A with his 36 points from the visiting Jean Morel.
Terry Marney’s mistake in a bunker by playing the wrong
ball incurred a two shot penalty, which ultimately cost him third place.
There were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0–20)
1st Barry Chadbourn (19) 36pts
2nd John Morel (17) 35pts
3rd Lloyd Shuttleworth (5) 34pts
Div B (21+)
1st Martin O’ Neill (28) 37pts
2nd Nigel Cannon (23) 35pts
3rd Kurt Eric Persson (29) 32pts
Wednesday, March 30, Treasure Hills - Stableford
Set the task of playing from the long white tees, the 16
Outbackers struggled in the strong blustery wind and the scoring remained
somewhat low. The course was in excellent condition although it is once
again sad to report that the booking system was a disaster, with our groups
having to wait until 45 minutes after our designated slot of 10 a.m. and the
starter declining to offer us the 10th tee as a
possibility.
Steve Mann enjoyed the longer than usual course (6726yds)
and did well to score 33 points, ahead of our organiser for the day, Lloyd
Shuttleworth who scrambled to 31. The minor placings involved a four way
count-back with Keith and Tony pipping Steve and Suzi, all with 30 points.
There were three ‘2’s from Steve Plant, Murray Hart and
Kissy Buchanan.
1st Steve Mann (9) 33pts
2nd Lloyd Shuttleworth (5) 31pts
3rd Keith Buchanan (15) 30pts
4th Tony McDonough (14) 30pts
Friday, April 1, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Twenty-two Outbackers played the B and C loops off them
yellows and once again the winner was the course apart from four people who
managed to better or play to their handicap. One young man had 44 stableford
points and that certainly is a record for this bar, then we had a 1
handicapper who scored 39 (gross 70)], absolutely fabulous by any standards.
The course was in great condition as usual and the rest
of the scores were somewhat ordinary, although generally better than of late
at Khao Kheow.
Steve Mann (36pts) had another good day out to follow his
win at Treasure Hill on Wednesday and Suzi (35pts) did well, taking third in
Div B, playing off 16 (2 less than her official h’cap).
Then there was also a “Roo Cup” challenge from the Kiwi
boys (Lloyd & the Capt’) which was won on the last hole through the
generosity of one the holder’s (Paul Greenaway & Steve Milne)], after four
putting. A sad way to lose but never the less I’m sure the boys will be back
to try to get it back for England.
There were two ‘2’s from Steve Milne and Eddy Beilby.
Div A (0-12)
1st Dave Buchanan (1) 39pts
2nd Steve Mann (9) 36pts
3rd Lloyd Shuttleworth (5) 32pts

Jimmy rings the bell
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, March 27, St.
Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Gareth Gill (9) 38pts
2nd Pat Regan (9) 37pts
3rd Gary Blackburne (6) 37pts
B Flight
1st Merle Humphreys (19) 39pts
2nd Christy Knight (21) 36pts
3rd Eddy Beilby (17) 36pts
Ladies Flight
1st Jum Karagit (15) 34pts
2nd Kathy Doody (19) 34pts
Near Pins: No3 Mark Morris, No5 Jez Lees, No10
Christy Knight, No17 Jack Grindvold
Sunday’s bash was switched to the Desmond Muirhead’s
designed St Andrews as the regular spot at Green Valley was host to a Thai
youth tournament. This suited B Flight’s Merle Humphreys down to the ground
as he fashioned a best of the day 39 points for man of the match and the
flight honours. Irishman Christy ‘good’ Knight got the better of Eddy ‘the
President’ in a count-back for second as both posted even par rounds.

Jim
Bell.
The big boys’ flight was led in by Gareth’ Ralphy’ Gill
with a rock solid 38 points. Young Irishman Pat Regan came out of a pile-up
of players all a stroke adrift for the silver while Gally Blackburne gained
the bronze, leaving Gavin ‘you know who’ satang-less.
The red flight went to Jum Karagit on 34 points as she
got the nod over Kathy Doody in a count-back verdict.
The ‘Principal’ and ‘Mussels’ were well and truly nailed
to the cross in their weekly four ball side challenge. Say no more!
Mick Lenihan, Christy Knight, Jez Lees and Gavin were not
quite satang-less as they shared the 2’s pot.
Monday, March 28, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Mike Jeffreys (16) 35pts
2nd Peter Wallace (22) 35pts
3rd
Jim Bell (19) 31pts
A relatively modest group took on the favorite of many,
Khao Kheow A&B layout. The scores on the day reflected the difficulty of the
course with no one bettering par. Two players were mixed up with 35 points
apiece but the count-back sorted it out favorable for Mike Jeffery’s to take
the top spot while Peter Wallace gained the silver.
Jim Bell and Henry Wong faced off in another count-back
for the bronze and it turned out Jim’s was more favorably distributed than
Henry’s.
Mike and Jim added a 2 to their winnings along with Peter
‘Don O’Corleone’ Henshaw.
Wednesday, March 30,
Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tore Eliassen (13) 36pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (16) 35pts
3rd Bob Newell (5) 33pts
B Flight
1st Christy Knight (21) 35pts
2nd John White (25) 34pts
3rd John Heaney (19) 32pts
Friday, April 1, Crystal
Bay - Stablford
1st Jim Bell (19) 41pts
2nd John Heaney (19) 37pts
3rd
Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 37pts
Jim Bell was man of the match with a top flight winning
41points of his 19 handicap. If ever he has the opportunity to play
consistently and work on his game there is no telling how low his handicap
can go. Jim was four clear of the tandem of Irishman John Heaney and Takeshi
Hakozaki San.
Jim and Peter Henshaw split the 2’s pot.

Wednesday, March 30,
Pleasant Valley - Medal
First time we’ve played Pleasant Valley for some months
and I think most golfers agreed there has been some improvements for the
better, and, with green fee vouchers priced at 650 baht, it’s a pretty good
deal!
Colin Greig continued his late push for the golfer of the
month title but came up just short, allowing John Graham to win it without
even playing, although Colin did win the A Flight again.
Newcomer John Gavin had the best round of the day scoring
37 points on a very windy day to win the B Flight ahead of John Hughes and
William Macey, who reversed positions from Monday’s game, again on a
count-back.

Bartley boy bags ‘the biggy’
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday (PSC) Group
Mike Gerrard

Tuesday’s winners pose with the staff at The Relax Bar.
Tuesday, March 29, Phoenix
- Stroke
It was the end of the month and time for our special
bonus prize of the Trattoria Italiana voucher for the best net score.
The first subject at the presentation at The Relax Bar
was the statement that the last time we played in such cold conditions was
last July in the middle of the UK Summer. We had players in long trousers
and winter style wind cheaters tops.
Never mind, the playing conditions were really
comfortable even to the point of one or two managing to walk the course
instead of relying on a cart.
If this weather continues some of us will have to pay a
visit to the sun beds in the local parlours. Least wise I think that’s what
they are?
With the low season now upon us the Mountain course was
duly closed for much needed repairs and attention. This left us with the
Lakes/Ocean course to tackle for the monthly stroke play award.
Although into the low season we still maintained our full
complement of 5 groups. That’s really enough for us; no long waiting to tee
off or hanging around for the presentation back at The Relax Bar.
As the headline and photo depict it was big John Bartley
who managed the best score today with a steady net 71, just pipping Eamon
Murtagh by way of count-back. Third place with a net 73 was the Cheshire
grin man, Patrick Browne, and in fourth place was my financial manager
Richard Baldwin with the same net of 73 but edged out of third place by
Patrick’s better back nine.
Near pins went to Barry Copestake, Stuart Gordon, Hugh
Byrne and the ‘Boston Burglar’, Bob Neylon.
The lucky draw winners of a free drink and a free
massage, courtesy of our hosts, The Relax Bar, went to Martin Williams and
David Czernie respectively. One other lucky draw prize went to Gentry
Harrington to make his day complete by adding to his winning from myself.
Mugged again!
Add all these prizes to everyone who returns to the
presentation getting a free drink means that all who attend get a return of
something or other.
From now on Tuesday’s golf will cost 900 baht for all non
Phoenix members who wish to play in the group, and you can also enjoy a
special rate of 1,000 baht green fee on Friday’s as guests of the members.
Next week (12th April) there will a bonus prize donated
by KPK Foods Ltd. for the best stableford score. Both of our golf days start
at 12.00 noon. Registration at 11.00 a.m. in the locker room.
Although we like to encourage anyone to play golf with
our group we do insist that players should have a reasonable understanding
of the game, its rules and the etiquette. Also an official handicap is
required to qualify for the main prizes. Occasional players would not feel
comfortable in our group.
Our sea fishing group sponsored by KPK Foods Ltd. is also
flourishing. Sailing every fortnight at present we are experiencing some
good catches. Last week we had a nice shark ray, queen fish and a sand
shark, plus countless good sized snapper and other varieties. My freezer is
quite full at present. The most important thing about the fishing is
enjoying a nice easy going day out at sea with some good company, at a
relatively low price.
For information regarding either golf or fishing contact me (Mike) on 087
091 7565 anytime.

Wallius floors the field
with twin 40’s
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, March 28,
Plutaluang - Stableford
There was a slight drizzle as we left Siam Cats and it
lasted all the way to the course, leaving us wondering if we would get a
game today. We had booked the north and west courses and upon arrival the
spots of rain eased but it remained a very cool day.

Kalevi
Wallius, Kari Kuparinen and Toni Lonnquist, the winning trio in the 1-2-3
team competition at Treasure Hill.
There were only seven groups out and we tee’d off 30
minutes ahead of schedule starting on the West.
Kalevi Wallius shot a gross 45 on the front nine and 48
on the back to come in with 45 points to win division 2, while 12 points
behind in second place was Yves Bosset and in third with 32 was William
Chang, beating Jim Connelly and Les Smith on count-back.
In his last game before his return to Luxembourg, Albert
Muller, playing off 9, won division 1 with 36 points, beating Kari Kuparinen
on a 15/13 back six count-back. Ed Stuart was third with 35.
There were no ‘2’s today in either division so a rollover
went into Treasure Hill on Wednesday in the 1-2-3 competition.
Near pins were collected today by Tony Thorne, Jim
Connelly (2), Jean Brunea, Jussi Vaari, William Chang and Ed Stuart.
It was bon voyage today after 5 months to Jim Connelly,
Fred Duffy and Harry Vincenzi and we also wish the best of luck to Paddy
Wilson on his return to Ireland.
Wednesday, March 30,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
The last Wednesday of the month and our fun game, an
individual stableford competition for four divisions plus a 1-2-3 team
contest as well. There were 13 teams of three signed up the night before at
Siam Cats but as the evening progressed there were three cancellations and
in the morning without any communication whatsoever there were two no shows
causing a few problems with the team structures and the transport of course.
The cool weather was still with us and there was a very
strong wind blowing here today and a few jackets were being worn on the
first tee.
Shooting 45 on Monday and being cut 4 shots overnight,
Kalevi Wallius turned in another great score of 43 points to win division 3
(another 3 shots off for Friday), with Joe Kubon in second place on 38 and
Burnie Sinclair third with 36.
Kari Kuparinen, playing off 6, won division 1 with 38
points, Raivo Velsberg was second with 35 and Tony Lonnquist beat Brian Howe
on a 17/12 back nine count-back for third after they both scored 27 points.
Frank Kelly’s 35 topped division 2, with Keith Hector
beating Jean Bruneau 20/17 on the back nine for the runner-up spot after
they both tied with 33 points.
Now playing off 16, Mam Morel won the ladies division
with 33 points.
Three ‘2’s were shared in division 1 by Kari Kuparinen,
Dennis Scougal and Raivo Velsberg while another rollover went to Pattaya
C.C. in division 2 on Monday.
Near pins today were claimed by Srithong Tann (2), Kari
Aarnio, Noi Emmerson (2), Georges Faber, William Chang, Kari Kuparinen,
Bryan Rought, Raivo Velsberg and Kalevi Wallius.
In the 1-2-3 team competition, Frank Kelly, Joe Kubon and
Tony Holehouse finished third with 73 points, and William Chang, David
Phillips and Burnie Sinclair took second on 75, but the winners today with
some exceptional golf from all three players was the trio of Kari Kuparinen,
Toni Lonnquist and Kalevi Wallius with 84 points.
Friday, April 1, Eastern
Star - Stableford
Today was another cool and pleasant day for the full
eighteen holes for all 8 groups. The equal cut was 6-17 in division 1 and
18+ for division 2.
Toi Blair won the ladies division with 33 points while 36
was the highest score for the men with Toni Stoltsen winning division 1.
Johannes Murkin beat Jean Bruneau 18/16 on the back nine after they finish
with 35 points to take second place and in division 2 Brian Blackford won
with 34, with Jim lane second two points behind and three scores of 30
fought for third place; John Williams and Tony Holehouse losing out to Bryan
Rought on the count-back.
In the ‘2’s today there was a rollover from last Friday
in division 1 and this is shared today by Darryl Blair, Frank Kelly, John
Lay and Chris Voller, while in division 2 there were three rollovers going
on to next Friday.
Near pins went to Toi Blair, Frank Kelly (2), Johannes
Murkin (2), Tony Holehouse and Paavo Luukkanen.
More Bon Voyages today, this time to Jean Bruneau and Dennis Scougal, see
you again in September!

Maiko takes monthly prize
without striking a ball
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Dick
Warberg, right, presents the Golfer of the Month award to Doug Maiko.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 29,
Mountain Shadow – Stableford
The test for the day was to be Mountain Shadow, which we
all know can be a monster in certain conditions, and on this day we got the
conditions; the wind was blasting and the rain was light and intermittent.
The drive down there was nice and relaxing as we went
down Route 7 and on the quiet back road past Bangpra and into Mountain
Shadow. Nice and peaceful, especially as I went with Mashi and could relax.
It is always nice to arrive there refreshed after the morning dash to get
everything underway.
We reached the course and found one other group there who
were having a major competition, so we went to the 10th
tee. As said, the wind was blowing and the rain was ‘spotty’ but we do not
often play in weather that is on the cold side. On this day the caddies were
freezing so we kept moving on the first nine, only to come up behind the
other group, then it became slow.
It was a relief to come up the last hole and head for the
showers, which on this day indeed had hot water in them (now I know it is
rare here but none the less it was well appreciated). Even the restaurant
was full and that is even rarer than hot water.

Tuesday
winner Agnes Sigurthors, right, with runner up Mike Gaussa, left, and one of
Bert’s finest.
Back at Bert’s we got on with the presentation and found
we had a couple of good scores. The winner with 39 points was Agnes
Sigurthors with ahead of Mike Gaussa with 36 points and in third was Mashi
Kaneta with 33 points.
This was the last day of the Bert’s ‘golfing month’ and
so time for the Golfer of the Month award to be handed out. With none of the
leaders in the places on this day, the leader on the morning became the
prize recipient, and seeing he had cried off in the morning with food
poisoning we had to call him to see if he could make it. Of course he could,
so the Golfer of the Month was Doug Maiko. Well done Doug! T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Johannes Johannson, Barry Oats, Barry
Elphick, Derek Brook
Long Putts: Brian Parrish, Keith Phillips

Wellings returns to glory
IPGC golf from The Haven
Sunday, March 27, Green
Valley - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Mark Armstrong (26) 37pts
2nd Russell Goldsworthy (12) 36pts
3rd Ted Murphy (22) 35pts
4th Joe
Peters (19) 35pts
The signs are that the low season is almost upon us, as
the numbers dropped to one division for the weekly visit to Green Valley
where the group is now playing regularly after having been switched around
frequently during the high season to one or other of Silky Oakes or St.
Andrews. Now that they will have some choice in the matter it will
interesting to see the number of players wishing to play Silky Oakes, where
golf carts are not only necessary but compulsory and the quality falls a
long way short of St. Andrews. A review of the pricing policy may make a
considerable difference.

Barry
Wellings.
Mark Armstrong took good advantage of the smaller field
and his current form to notch up his first win with The Haven, albeit by the
slimmest of margins, ahead of Russell Goldsworthy whose outstanding gross 74
could command only second on the day.
Ted Murphy and playing partner Joe Peters had to be
separated by a count-back for third and fourth places with Ted just taking
it by 18 to 15.
There was only one ‘2’ by Russell Goldsworthy which swept
the pot.
The presentations were conducted and overseen by Russell
Exley as usual at the Golf Centre Bar at the course, with amiable hosts John
and Geoff assisted by their lovely staff, taking excellent care of the
golfers.
Monday, March 28, Treasure
Hill - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Benny Hansen (27) 36pts
2nd Stuart Thompson (9) 35pts
3rd Yasuo Suzuki (10) 35pts
4th Mark Armstrong (26) 34pts
5th Bob Lamond (6) 33pts
6th Phil
Knight (9) 32pts
On yet another tough day for scoring at the always
difficult to beat Treasure Hill, even though the tees for the day were the
reputedly easier yellows, Benny Hansen became the second player in the week
to take his first win out of The Haven.

Trevor
Schirmer & John Kendall.
Benny had taken good advice to play within his handicap
abilities and treat par 4’s as if they were par 5’s and par 5’s as if they
were par 6’s and attempt to get on the greens in one over regulation and
then try to get level two putts, and it seemed to work most of the time even
allowing for one or two less than perfect shots.
At the final analysis he just edged out old campaigner
Stuart Thompson who needed no such advice having been working it around
hundreds of golf courses throughout the world over the past years. This
stood Stuart in good stead as he continued to apply the pressure right to
the end and therefore won out in a count-back for second with Yasuo Suzuki
by a margin of 13 to 10 over the back six after they had tied the back nine
at 19 apiece.

Benny
Hansen.
Mark Armstrong again showed good application as he took
fourth place ahead of Bob Lamond in fifth and Phil Knight in sixth.
There were no 2’s in the first division, but Colin
Kershaw had the very first one of his golfing career to sweep the second
division pool, which included several rollovers to make it an even more
memorable event.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members
Karl Hnat, David Purkiss, Kelvin Hazel and Jed Goodridge and also welcomed
back Colin and Chris Kershaw, Philip Voas, Arthur Todd all in transit from
the Hong Kong 7’s back to the UK, and Carl Lovatt and Ray Underwood.
Wednesday, March 30, Mt.
Shadow - Pairs Scramble/Stableford
1st Trevor Schirmer & John Kendall (13)
48pts
2nd Chris Dopp & Norman Cheetham (10) 45pts
3rd Phil Groves & Yasuo Suzuki (8) 44pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka & Danny Greer (16) 44pts
5th Russell Exley & Mark Armstrong (14) 41pts
6th
Russell Gilroy & Paul Redmond (14) 41pts
The monthly scramble was once again a two person event
held at the always popular, at least for team events, Mountain Shadow, where
the greens were as fast as they ever were and the fairways and rough were in
very good condition as compared to its sister course at Crystal Bay.

Russell
Gilroy.
As usual the handicaps were set at 40% of the combined
with a requirement that each player should provide at least seven tee shots.
For the first time since the dynamic duo of Trevor
Schirmer and B.J. Smith split up following B.J.’s transformation into a
serious house person, babysitter and family man, Trevor found a new partner
who on the day was nearly as good as B.J., in the form of John Kendall who
had been assiduously practicing in secret with another clandestine group in
preparation for the big event. The new combination of Aussie and AmeriTico
worked so well that the winning margin of three strokes was the highest for
some months, leaving new pairing Chris Dopp and Norman Cheetham in second
after their very tidy round at nine under.
Following them in just one back was a two-way tie between
the last minute pairing of Phil Groves & Yasuo Suzuki and the, as of now at
least, fully bonded pairing of Danny Greer and Shuichi Kodaka. Following a
count-back the former pair were placed third after winning by 15 to 14 after
they had tied the nine on 24 each.
Danny was left pondering the lipped out putt on the 17th
followed by a double miss from both of the team from under two feet which
could have seen them finish in second place. Probably a case of too much
bonding and not enough practice.
Fifth and sixth places also needed a count-back which
Russell Exley and Mark Armstrong won on the last 3 against Russell Gilroy
and Paul Redmond by 7 to 6 after they had tied the back nine and six on 22
and 13 respectively.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member
Chris Dopp and a welcome back for John Kendall.
There was also a very sad announcement of the death of
long time member Kjell Christiansen who passed away after a short illness in
Norway earlier on March 29 just a week prior to what would have been his 74th
birthday, surrounded by his family and close friends. Condolences have been
sent to Kjell’s wife Kirstin who was at his side at the end.
On a happier note there was a round of “Happy Birthday”
for Chris Kershaw who was celebrating his 64th on the
day.
Friday, April 1, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-13)
1st Barry Wellings (5) 40pts
2nd Brian Beaupre (5) 35pts
3rd Phil Groves (9) 34pts
Division 2 (14+)
1st Russell Gilroy (17) 37pts
2nd Paul Hartley (19) 36pts
3rd
Arthur Todd (15) 35pts
Another good sized group took on the popular but hard to
beat Khao Kheow, as usual off the yellow tees, on a great day for golf when
the cloud cover was good but a steady wind blew just enough to keep the
humidity to an acceptable level
Barry Wellings, who many will remember as a very tough
but fair professional footballer having played many seasons with the Everton
1st team squad and in the Portuguese Premier League,
took his first win out of The Haven during this trip, which has lasted
almost five months so far as the lure of the pleasures of Pattaya in
particular and Thailand in general have taken hold, but until recently
following an extended series of practice sessions it had shown little reward
on the local golf courses.
These efforts at last paid off handsomely as a gross 73
attested, earning him the top spot in the first division a clear five shots
ahead of Brian Beaupre in second. Brian had been very steady as is usual and
always goes about the business of golf in a measured and thoughtful manner.
Phil Groves rounded out the first division podium another
shot back and staying within the buffer zone once again.
The second division was a much tighter affair as Russell
Gilroy led in Paul Hartley by a single stroke after a very solid performance
at the end of very a quiet week when results were hard to come by. Paul
tried his hardest to catch Russell over the inward half, scoring an exciting
23 points and ruing the slow start to the round which surely cost him
another win.
Arthur Todd rounded out the top three in the division
ensuring that he would be taking home one good memory of his far east trip,
after having had to watch England lose in the final at the Hong Kong Sevens
but at least getting a shirt from the former activity to add to his huge
collection.
There were no 2’s in the second division but as usual
when Yasuo Suzuki gets one in the first division there are several more and
this day he shared the pool with Leslie Cobban, Russell Exley and Alan
Pilkington.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for
Brian Beaupre, Barry Wellings, Leslie Cobban and Paul Hartley and farewells
to Yasuo Suzuki, Phil Groves and the wandering rugby supporters, Colin and
Chris Kershaw Philip Voas and Arthur Todd.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group you can contact mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi
13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation
to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day,
but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays
on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be
found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Hall mark put on monthly trophy
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

Winner
Richard Hall, left, with the monthly trophy,
is flanked by runner up Herb Ishinaga.
It was a cool and windy day on Wednesday, March 30, and
it suited two people fine. Richard Hall had an excellent game and came in
with 42 points that could not be beaten. Herb Ishinaga finally had a good
game and thought he had it made to the top slot but it was not to be. He
managed 39 points but got only 2 points on the last 3 holes. Richard again
has his name on the trophy for the end of the month tournament.
Coming tied for third were Dale Murphy and Paul Kraft.
Both came in with 31 points each but Paul managed a better back nine to edge
out Dale for third place.
Hope to see you all next week for our first April get together.
Allidi’s class shines through the clouds
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 28, Khao
Kheow A & B - Stableford
Once more light rain was falling as the Café Kronborg
faithful started to assemble but as usual we were optimistic that the
current cold and wet spell would not spoil our day and indeed it turned out
well. We had 30 starters for the journey to the classy Khao Kheow and
conspicuous by his absence was The Admiral who was on his way to the USA for
his annual S.A.T. (Sonkran Avoidance Trip). It was left to Mike Gosden and
myself to organize things and we managed to get everyone on their way from
the Kronny at the scheduled time of 0815hrs.

Monday’s flight winners: Mike Allidi, Graham Buckingham & Leif Kirkegaard.
We welcomed David Brennan from Canada, Patrice Bardy and
Jean Claude Coulon from France, Chop Daprakhon from Thailand, Henrick Buch
and Jesper Rasmussen the second from Denmark and the return of veteran Hugh
O’Donnell from Spain/California. We also said farewell to Elias Magnusson
along with Agnes Sigurthors and Johannes Jonsson who are all returning to
their homelands very soon.
After a 43 minute drive we arrived at the course and our
first group was able to hit off 30 minutes before our scheduled 1000hrs tee
time with the A & B nines designated. Once more it was cool and overcast in
fact we did experience light drizzle for about half the round but not enough
to cause any concerns at all.
The course was as usual in great shape and a good test of
golf although there were some good scores posted on the day. We were able to
finish our round in just over four hours which was helped by the fact that
drink stops were not required due to the cooler weather.

Thursday’s top three: Mike Winfield, Peter Blackburn & Alan Ewing.
That classy 2 handicap golfer Mike Allidi produced
another fine round with 73 off the stick and took out the A Flight with 37
points on a count-back from his playing partner Chop Daprakhon. Arne-Max
Pedersen finished in third place with Mike Gosden fourth.
Leif Kirkegaard won the B Flight by 1 point from Patrice
Bardy, with Bjarne Kjaer in third and Mike Winfield beating your writer on a
count-back for fourth place.
PSC Treasurer Graham Buckingham easily took out the C
Flight, finishing 5 points clear of Svend Gaarde who in turn relegated David
Brennan to third place on another count-back. Fourth place was won by Jean
Claude L’Hoste.
A Flight (0-16)
1st Mike Allidi (2) 37pts
2nd Chop Daprakhon (12) 37pts
3rd Arne-Max Pedersen (15) 36pts
4th Mike Gosden (11) 35pts
B Flight (17-21)
1st Leif Kirkgaard 38pts
2nd Patrice Bardy (17) 37pts
3rd Bjarne Kjaer (19) 36pts
4th Mike Winfield (20) 32pts
C Flight (22+)
1st Graham Buckingham (24) 39pts

Long Putts: A9 Peter Blackburn, B9 Mike Allidi
The Compass Cup made an appearance and was marginally won
by the returning Hugh O’Donnell. Deefa the Dog was also present and hungrily
devoured several donations which will shortly be handed over to a very
deserving charity – more details later on that.
Thursday, March 31,
Greenwood C & B - Stableford
As was to be expected with so many of our people
returning to their homelands, the numbers were down today and just 20
golfers assembled at Café Kronborg in readiness for the trip to Greenwood.
We welcomed Craig Webster from the USA and farewelled Kenny Chung who is
returning home for a while and also your writer who is returning to Perth,
Australia for a few weeks.
The skies were overcast as we left the Kronny at the
scheduled time of 0815hrs and there were a few spots of rain during the 55
minute journey to the golf course, but the weather was fine by the time we
arrived. Our scheduled tee time was 1000hrs but as the course was quiet our
first group was invited to hit off when we were ready and that was 20
minutes ahead of schedule.
The course was immaculate and as usual the greens were
terrific although very slick. As mentioned earlier the weather was fine, in
fact perfect for golf with a nice, stiff cooling breeze early on. This
resulted in no stops for drink stops for us as we cruised round the C & B
nines in just four hours & fifteen minutes.
The A Flight was won by Mike Winfield, just 1 point ahead
of yours truly, while the Tropical Bert’s Golfer of the Month Doug Maiko
finished in third spot. Irishman Alan Ewing had a return to form and won B
Flight on a count-back from J C L’Hoste with Henry Wong 1 point further back
in third place.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Mike Winfield (20) 38pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (17) 37pts
3rd Doug Maiko (13) 35pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Alan Ewing (23) 36pts
2nd J C L’Hoste (23) 36pts
3rd Henry Wong (25) 35pts
Near Pins: C3 Lotte Boskov, C6 Craig Webster
Long Putts: B9 Bjarne Kjaer, C9 Craig Webster
The Compass Cap was well won by Ron Folkes and Deefa the
Dog collected many donations for charity from our generous Café Kronborg
golfers.
Just a mention for all to place on their calendars –
Tuesday, May 10th at Plutaluang will be Papa Ray Rogers Birthday
Anniversary. It will be a four man scramble and the starting sheet will be
posted in Café Kronborg on April 20th.

All’s well that ends well for Moriarty
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Monday, 28th March was the coolest day for a long while
and the Pattaya Golf Society visited Green Valley for a taste of “winter”
golf in the form of the group’s monthly medal event.
With the domestic return of a dozen friends only three
days previously, the group found itself shorn to a single flight and the
concession was made to start from the original white tees on the first hole,
hoping a par to start would warm the spirit and bodies of the golfers, but
Green Valley management chose to start the competition of the tenth.
So much for good intentions but a feast of good golf
still was produced as “Banjo” Bannister and Wichai Tananusorn both recorded
net 71 for a share of third place. New Yorker Dave Moriarty has proved
himself more than capable in the last month and he excelled himself on this
his final round to produce net 68, his gross 81 just failing by one to be
the best of the day. Sharing top spot with Dave was Peter Talbot.
The only birdie ‘2’ was recorded by Steve Durey on the
twelfth on his first round with the lads whilst the Booby Bevy went to new
member John O’Sullivan, a ten handicapper who chose to perform like a
newcomer to the game with the highest score of the day.
It may have been a cold day but the scores at the top
certainly warmed the spirits of the PGS at Green Valley.
That’ll do nicely Larry
The cold snap continued but so did the golf as the
Pattaya Golf Society visited Phoenix on Wednesday, 30th March to play a
stableford competition over the Lakes and Ocean nines. Once again the field
was limited to a single flight as the hint of a repeat of last year’s low
season began to appear but those involved found the weather may have been
cool but the golf as always was warm and friendly.
Sharing third place were Brian Beaupre and Wichai
Tananusorn, both on 33 points and Brian achieving he best gross of eighty.
Ahead in second was new member Mal Russell, seemingly playing out of his
skin with 35 points whilst Larry Slattery came good at last with 36 points
for the win.
There were no birdie ‘2’s on the firm unreceptive greens
and the Booby Bevy went to “Boss for the Day” John Mason after boasting that
Ocean six was a beautiful hole and then saw his tee shot ricochet off a
tree, thereby preserving the safety of the house bordering the dogleg. An
air-shot which followed compounded the issue but promoted a worthy
discussion on why the warning signs are only in English, not Thai, Japanese
or Korean. Enthusiastic and speculative but not as enjoyable as Larry’s fine
efforts at Phoenix.
Emerald Isle Winner
On Friday 1st April the Pattaya Golf Society chose
Emerald as the venue for its stableford competition to start the new month
and found the course full of Pattaya golfers. The weather was better than
for recent rounds and the course was quite well presented.
The single flight was to see some excellent golf and
Chris Smith, playing off scratch, recorded the day’s best gross of 76 to
share third place on 32 points with Patrick Russell. The joint winners were
Alan Duckett, taking a rare break from his Windmill Bar in Jomtien, and
Larry Slattery, both on 37 points. For Larry, the golfer from the Emerald
Isle, it was the second consecutive round at the top of the leaderboard and
he also scored the day’s only birdie ‘2’ on the thirteenth.
Mal Russell was the recipient of the Booby Bevy after his
hero-to-zero performance saw him total nineteen points less than his
previous appearance while he wilted in the excessive humidity.
The day was capably marshalled by John Mason but even he
could do nothing about a slow round behind holiday golfers.

PAGS
monthly tournament B Flight winner and day’s top scorer Jan Silvandersson,
center.
Tuesday, March 29, Mt.
Shadow – PAGS Monthly Tournament
Another great day out was well organised by the guys at
the Fairways Golf Society. The cut today for the three divisions was 0-13,
14-18, & 19-28 with over one hundred golfers vying to win one of the many
prizes on offer.
The weather was cool and dry and the course was in great
shape. But as usual this course took its toll as only three players in the
men’s division managed to break par.
In the A Flight Alan Pilkington just pipped his close
friend Alan Griffiths by one point to take the honours with 37 points. Jan
Silvandersson was the runaway victor in the B Flight with the highest score
of the day (40pts) to win convincingly while George Young also had a
comfortable win in the C Flight, finishing 4 points clear of second and
third.
The ladies flight was a very close contest between
Srithong (40pts) and the in-form Mam Moral (39pts).

A Flight

Friday, April 1, Greenwood
– Stableford
We knew it was April fool’s day but we did not expect
anyone to be so foolish as the management at Treasure Hill. Yet again they
‘excelled’ themselves by not only double booking two outlets for the same
time of 10.30 a.m., but also increasing their green fees for the low season
by 150 baht rather than reducing them like everyone else.
After a frustrating 20 minutes of negotiations and
getting absolutely nowhere we decided to make the short journey to Greenwood
where the scenario was completely different as the staff there fell over
backwards to accommodate us. The course was in great shape and everybody
enjoyed it once we settled down.
Only one division today, with Pier Cere being the only
player to break par and thus be the winner, while Bob Crawford beat Brian
Maddox on a 17-13 count-back for second place.
1st Pier Cere (12) 38pts
2nd Bob Crawford (27) 32pts
3rd Brian Maddox (21) 32pts
Near Pins: Ning Neal, Joop Medze, Pier Cere, Tony Duthie
Note: The group is based at the Fairways Driving
Range situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and we play
every Sun - Mon - Wed - & Fri. Anyone wishing to play with our society can
call into the club house and put their names down on the lists provided or
call Scott on 084 389 2327. Transport provided if required.

Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Pao, Ooy and
Aht.
April Fool’s Day was one of those unusual days in our
bowling league when no team changed position from the previous week. First
place Canada remained on top after winning three points from VFW Post 9876.
Canada got great bowling from all three members of their team with Tue
Pettae leading the way with games of 191, 199, 189, 579 series, Lek Reaper
had games of 187, 197, 198, 582 series and Pao Orawan bowled a 201 game and
510 series. VFW did not bowl bad as Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 245 game, 549
series and Tui Amphanon rolled a 534 series but they were bowling without
one of their bowlers.
Aht Johansson bowled a 201 game and 526 series to
lead second place Snow Bowler to a three point win over under manned
USMC. The USMC team was bowling without their captain, Joe Ferral, who
has back problems. Sue Murphy was best from USMC with a 520 series.
La Montgomery bowled a 520 series to help Brother D
remain in third place as they took three points from Café Kronborg. Kran
Nielsen had a 538 series and Rich Murphy a 502 for Kronborg.
Ken Johansson bowled a 509 series and with his total handicap of 120
pins made the difference for Green Tree as they won three points from
Bavaria. Noodle Russell bowled a 507 for Green Tree.
