Champions battle it out on Eastern Seaboard roads
Staff reporters
& Race media
This evening, Friday, November 10th from 7pm Walking Street in Pattaya will
reverberate to music of a different kind, the revving of highly tuned racing
engines, as the twenty rally cars competing in the 18th International Rally
of Thailand are flagged away at the start of the Kingdom’s best known motor
sport event.
Enjoy
the thrills and spills of the 18th International Rally of Thailand to be
held on the Eastern Seaboard this weekend.
The rally is being organized by the Royal Automobile Association and
International Rally Co Ltd (Thailand), and has been held every year since
1989. It is a part of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship of 2006
(APRC).
First car over the starting ramp will be 2004 Malaysian Rally Champion,
Brian Green of New Zealand in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. This year
Brian is driving for the well-funded Wan Yu Rally Team from China and has
been a little unlucky not to have scored several podiums in rounds of the
Asia-Pacific Rally Championship. He’d dearly like to add the Rally of
Thailand to his list of victories and is very much at home on the fast,
smooth roads of this event.
His strongest rival for the prestigious King’s Cup, awarded this year to the
overall winner, should be Malaysian, Saladin Mazlan in Car No.3, a Subaru
Impreza Sti. ‘Din’ is the form driver of the region at the moment with
victories this year at the Pattaya Rally in April and North Sumatera
(Indonesia) in June. He is the only driver in the field with European rally
experience, having competed in several rounds of the extremely competitive
Junior World Rally Championship in 2001.
Leading Thai driver, Wittaya Ruegchan is seeded fourth and is quietly
confident of a top placing, stating that the route should suit his style and
his Thai Beer sponsored Lancer Evo VIII.
Following the Ceremonial Start competing crews will drive to the Star Hotel,
Rayong where they will have an overnight stop. The rally proper commences at
6:30 Saturday morning when crews head north to tackle 124km of closed gravel
roads around Chachoengsao. They then return for another overnight halt in
Rayong before driving a further 78km of competitive stages near Nong Pa Lai
Reservoir, some 35km north of the city. The total distance including touring
sections is 807km. The rally will finish at the Star Plaza, Rayong at 3pm on
Sunday.
Admission to designated spectator areas is free and maps are available at
the Star Hotel, Rayong or by visiting www.thailandrally.com.
City lose top spot after
a thrilling draw with Londoner
The MBMG International Bangkok Casuals League 2006/07
By Chris Sanderson
The big game of the weekend produced an absolute cracker as Londoner and
Pattaya City served up a high tempo, end to end feast of football that
underlined the very high quality that the league now represents.
Pattaya had the ball in the net first only to have it ruled out as the
whistle had already blown. Londoner then pulled the best out of the Pattaya
keeper as the sides went to the break all-square. City then crashed the
crossbar with a fantastic free kick from distance before the Dons went in
front after sparkling work on the right wing, the goal being the first that
City had conceded this season.
Three minutes later it was all-square once more after the ball was forced
just over the Londoner’s line following a goal mouth melee. There was still
time for the Don’s keeper to be at his best to deny Mark Brittain and for
the Don’s forwards to fail to connect with a couple of crosses by only
inches before the game ended in a share of the points.
Woodstock took full advantage of their title contenders result, beating a
determined Patana side 6-3 to go clear at the top by a point. The Germans
bounced back from last week’s setback with a fine 5-0 victory over Irish
Exchange to keep them in third place.
Meanwhile Les Gaulois beat Sunbelt by the odd goal in 5 in a clash of mid
table teams and Bangkok United won their first game of the season, defeating
the Vikings 2-0 as their opponents continue their torrid start to the
season.
Last but not least British Club in their brand new strips were hoping to add
to their fine result of the previous week but came up against a Winking Frog
side that is back to its sparkling best with the latter winning 2-0 to stay
in the championship race.
Pattaya youngster wins Karate medal
Pattaya’s aspiring Karate masters put up a fine
showing at the recent All Thailand Karate Do Championship in Bangkok.
One youngster demonstrates his prowess at flying
kicks
The All Thailand Karate Do Championship was held in Bangkok last month and
The Martial Arts Center of Pattaya was represented by four competitors: two
girls and two boys: Phrophawan Koiwa 10 years, Phounkaw Koiwa 9 years, James
Gritsada 11, years and Nikolas Backlund 9 years.
Nikolas Backlund captured the bronze medal in his age group by winning the
first three matches, the first by 8-0, the second 9-0 and the third 7-2.
Unfortunately, he was injured during his third bout and subsequently lost
his fourth match 0-8.
This is the second year that the club has participated in the All Thailand
Championship. Last year, Prophawan and Phounkaw both won bronze medals. This
year, James Gritsada lost in his first fight while Phraphawan and Phounkaw
won their first round matches but lost in the second.
We wish to thank the Thailand Karate Federation for their invitation to
participate and give thanks also to the competition officials for their good
work and participation.
The Pattaya Karate Club trains every Friday at 5.15pm-6.45pm and Saturday
and Sunday at 3-5pm on the 4th floor of the Mike Shopping Centre. For more

Asian University participates in National Inter-University sports competition.
Report by AU students
The last week of October saw a 6-day Inter-University Sports competition
held in the historical city of Ayutthaya, the tournament serving as a final
round eliminator for the 34th National Colleges and Universities’ Games to
be held later this year. There were 12 colleges and universities taking
part, all based in the eastern part of Thailand.
Time
out from the sports: the students take in some of the historical sights of
Ayutthaya
The event was opened with a colourful parade through the city that included
not only the participants but also local dignitaries. The Asian University
was very happy to be able to take part in this important sports event for
the first time this year; it was a great opportunity for the students to get
to know about other universities and colleges in the region. It was also a
chance to pit their sporting skills against local friendly rivals, Burapha
University.
Basketball, soccer, beach volleyball and petanque were the main sports in
this competition. All the AU players were excited about the prospect of
taking part in these games; not just for the chance of winning, but also for
the opportunity of making new friends from other universities.
The
AU players relished the chance of competing in this event for the first
time.
During the games, the atmosphere generated by players and fans was both
fun-filled and intense. Competitors of all events played their hearts out,
loving the sport, feeling the sweat on their bodies and enjoying the
challenge provided by their opponents.
Other students, who were not playing were also embroiled in the competition
and the cheerleading sections kept the watching crowd delightfully
entertained with their singing, cheering and dancing, which didn’t stop
until the game was over. The general feeling was that everyone was having a
good time, and that students who entered the competition as strangers, left
at the end of the week as friends. It was also a great opportunity for
everyone to sample the sights, sounds and history of the nation’s former
capital, Ayutthaya.
Simpson Marine supports Thai yachting team for the Doha Games
Story and photo
by Peter Cummins
The Fifteenth Asian Games, to be held in Doha, are almost upon us.
Thailand will be sending a strong team and, due to the great support of the
newly opened offices of Simpson Marine, the Thai yachtsmen will be going to
Qatar with some real medal hopes.
The
Simpson Marine Beneteau in action in Phuket earlier this year
Recently consolidating its branch offices in Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket
into one location at the Phuket Boat Lagoon - managed by long-time Simpson
associate and highly-experienced Grant Saunders - Simpson has been keenly
supporting one of the Thai yacht-racing teams, which will challenge some
eleven regional competitors in the fast-moving, unforgiving match-racing
challenge.
Up until a week or so ago the Thai team, located in Sattahip under the
patronage of the Yacht racing Association of Thailand and coached by Royal
Varuna Yacht Club Sailing Director, John Weston, was obliged to do their
intensive training on the Farr 25 Platu. Although this trim little (8m.)
Sports Boat is a great catalyst for implementing the type of swift
manoeuvring required in ‘one-on-one’ match racing, it is not the “Doha boat
of choice”, which is the newly-developed French-built Beneteau First Class
7.5.
Simpson Marine earlier this year imported the prototype to Phuket where a
New Zealand crew took on the ‘locals’ in the Third Evason Phuket Race Week
Regatta at the end of July. But, the Phuket-designed and built Phuket 8s
never gave the Beneteau a chance against these fast, light craft.
Nevertheless, Simpson Marine realized that the Thai team for Doha must
practice on the Beneteu 7.5 and, just last week, sent the whole team, plus
coach Weston and manager Anirut Posnakrishna, down to Phuket for an
intensive training session on the Beneteau.
“An entirely different experience compared to the Platu”, said John Weston
on his return. “We have garnered some great advantages and now will be
better prepared in Doha next month,’ he added.
The Tango Cup is back
Enjoy some great polo action at this year’s
Tango Cup. (Photo by King Power)
November 17-19 will see some high-action low-goal polo at Siam Polo Park
as the illustrious “Tango Cup” is back. The Tango Cup is Thailand’s
‘Beginners Cup’ where new and experienced polo players play together in
a fun-spirited tournament to gain experience and to entertain
spectators. This year, there will be 4 teams from all corners of the
globe - including Bowo’s Indonesian Powerhouse - who made their debut on
the polo scene last year. All visitors are welcome. Please come down to
watch and learn about the great game of polo. There is a delicious
dinner on Saturday night for 1,000 Baht per head (free for all players),
and if you would like to come to the dinner, then please email the club.

Inter school sports day is a big hit
Catch me if you can! Determined students compete
in ACS’s recent sports day. Mark Beales
Schools from around Thailand headed to a college near Pattaya for an epic
inter-sports day recently.
Thirteen of the 14 schools that make up the St Gabriel Foundation were at
Assumption College Sriracha last month for the two-day gymkhana.
Students competed in a variety of track and field events as they battled to
win trophies for their school.
A
young athlete clears the high jump during ACS’s inter-schools gymkhana.
The event is held at a different St Gabriel institution every year and this
year was the turn of Assumption College Sriracha (ACS). Assumption
University is the only institution in the foundation which does not take
part. The event was the 11th inter-sports gymkhana.
Assumption College Sriracha maintained its reputation for sporting
excellence, as it was named overall champion. ACS scooped 16 gold medals, 12
silver and 10 bronze.
Runners-up were Montfort College, Chiang Mai, with 14 golds, six silvers and
eight bronzes, while in third spot was Assumption Thonburi with a haul of
seven golds, 12 silvers and eight bronzes.
ACS has many students from the Pattaya area studying in a variety of English
programmes. If you would like to know more about ACS, visit www.acs.ac.th.
Trevor takes a holiday
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, October 30, Khao Kheow, Stableford
1st Phil Groves, 40 pts
2nd B.J. Smith, 37 pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer, 36 pts - c/b 19
4th Paul Simpson, 36 pts - c/b 18
5th Dave Spendley, 34 pts
Although Khao Kheow is just getting back to its best condition after a
long period of renovation and wet weather, the travel to and from the
course has now become a complete nightmare with journey times of between
an hour and a half and two hours. This combined with the high season
green fees will make visits to the course very limited for the next few
months.
Phil Groves had an excellent round of 73 gross to take the honours and
keep B.J. Smith waiting a little while longer to claim another elusive
win. Level 20 points on both nines underscored the good form that Phil
is in when the course is up to snuff. Trevor Schirmer got the better of
Paul Simpson on count back for third and Dave Spendley filled out the
last spot on the podium.
Dave Spendley had the only “two” in the second division whilst Al Rolnik
and Yasuo Suzuki shared the first division pot.
Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingston, the resident PGA
teaching professional, welcomed new members Andy Vanstone and Peter
Sumner, he also welcomed back Rodney Nabbe, Dave Spendley, Paul Simpson,
Andy Pilkington and Trevor Edge.
Wednesday,
November 1,
Eastern Star, Stableford
Division 1
1st Mikael Andersson, 39 pts
2nd Tony Thorne, 36 pts
3rd Phil Groves, 35 pts
Division 2
1st Philippe Berra, 34 pts
2ndYuki Kikuchi, 32 pts - c/b 17
3rd Kaneo Watanabe, 32 pts - c/b 16
4th John Dahlseng, 32 pts - c/b 14
A very good turn out for Eastern Star, where the condition of the course
was in “A 1” shape, with good growth on the fairways and the greens
running fast and true. It can now be said that it is in the very top
group of local courses, and with the extremely helpful staff and caring
management it is sure to feature on everyone’s schedule in the coming
months.
Mikael Andersson was again in fine form, taking the first division by
three shots ahead of the in-form Tony Thorne, with Phil Groves again
showing well in third place.
In the second division Philippe Berra at last had a win. It was not one
of his best rounds but it was still good enough on the day to see off
the rest of the chasing pack headed by the well fed, watered and
massaged, Yuki Kikuchi and Kaneo Watanabe, who finished 2nd and 3rd
ahead of John Dahlseng.
There were no “twos” in the second division but Tony Thorne and Yasuo
Suzuki shared the first division spoils.
Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new member Trevor Gowthorpe and
welcomed back Daryl and Toi Blair. He also had a special welcome for
“Yatayuka Tours” in the form of Tatsumi Noguchi, Yuki Kikuchi and Kaneo
Watanabe, who are all being driven around in the special luxury bus by
Yasuo, which features Geisha hostesses serving fresh chilled sashimi,
yakitori, and sake whilst they bask in the hot tub in the recreation
area at the rear of the bus.
Friday November 3, Burapha C and D, Stableford
1st Trevor Edge, 37 pts - c/b 18, c/b6 14
2nd Al Rolnik, 37 pts - c/b 18, c/b6 12
3rd Alan Griffiths, 36 pts - c/b 18 c/b6 15
4th Rodney Nabbe, 36 pts - c/b 18 c/b6 12
5th Yasuo Suzuki, 36 pts - c/b 17
6th Tatsumi Noguchi, 36 - c/b 17
Having traveled down from the far north to spend a week catching up with
old friends, and in the process trying to part them from large
quantities of their hard earned cash, Trevor Edge a.k.a. “The ATM” had
been singularly unsuccessful in his quest in the first two outings of
the week.
On this last day however, a superhuman effort on his part allied with
some rather sub-human efforts on the part of his chums, found Trevor at
last on his way to the top of the pile. Unfortunately after blowing the
horn in celebration, he ended up poorer than when he started the day as
his friends helped him in ‘sinking a few’. But if he had really wanted
to do a bit of serious fleecing he would not have declared a two shot
reduction in handicap when he arrived. Well done Trevor and we hope to
see you again soon. Al Rolnik was the only one to not have to stump up
as he ran Trevor to a tie but lost second place on the count back.
Alan Griffiths, with an outstanding back six that garnered him 15 points
led a whole bunch of hopefuls on level par and was able to push Rodney
Nabbe into fourth whilst the other 50 % of “Yatayuka Tours” who had not
previously won filled out the last two slots.
Once again there were no “twos” in the second division but Tony Thorne
was successful in the first division and he shared the pot with Barry
Traynor who also slipped one in.
Earlier in the week Richard had said farewell to Trevor Schirmer who is
returning to Australia to gather in a few thousand acres of crops, after
which, he hopes to be watching England hand back the ‘old urn’. His
efforts in organising the golf days on the course will be missed over
the next few weeks.
The Haven Group is now meeting at 8.45 am and leaving around 9.30 am as
the high season starts and many of the courses switch to 2 tee off times
in the mornings starting at 6.30 and 11.00.
High Season is here!

Note: Big Hitting Johnny McHugh wrote in from the bounding main to
suggest that The Scribe add podium holder’s handicaps in parentheses, as he
had seen in the Bowling Green’s column. The Scribe, whose handicap was
always a source of embarrassment, has met the request. Thanks to the Bowling
Green, remembering that imitation is the highest form of flattery. And
thanks to Johnny. The Scribe doesn’t fully understand the enhancement but
when you only have two readers, you listen to them.
The first vibrations of high season were in the air as all fixtures were
immensely popular. Of course a big crowd on Sunday at Green Valley is no
shock, as the lads and lasses filled out four solid flights. The gentleman
who rose to the top of that mass of humanity was none other than Nice Guy
Johnny who captured B Flight with 42 points, two more than Roy, MBE, and
another a head of The Donkey.
The premier players had the next best of it with Irishman Pat Regan starting
a one stroke cascade with his 40 points. Julian Clarke’s medalist round of
gross 75 was only good for A Flight’s second. Gen. Black Jack needed to a
count back to edge that Hawkeye Hero, Darren Smith.
This column has been predicting a substantial improvement in play for the
Shack’s Mike Loewen, so it was no surprise to this Scribe that Mike was
joint second best on the day and was the top man in D Flight with his 40
points. That put him two clear of Sugar Ray “I already have a nickname”
Handford and Monsieur Pierre Bietry. Sugar’s favorable inward nine forced
another French retreat.
Newly arriver Mark Booner made short work of his Pattaya acclimation as he
topped C Flight with 38 points, one ahead of the Man of Leisure and yet
another in front of the tandem of One Ball and The Valet’s Best Friend. Dave
handed over the keys to third place to George.
Monday, October 31, Khao Kheow - A & B - Yellow Tees,
Stableford
A Flight:
1st Claus Birk Thomsen (11), 38 points
2nd Graham Johnson (5), 36 points
3rd Julian Clarke (6), 35 points
B Flight:
1st Steve Mulberry (13), 37 points
2nd Tom Byrne (15), 33 points
3rd Colm Mullen (15), 32 points
C Flight:
1st Sugar Ray Handford (22), 39 points
2nd Kay Molloy (27), 35 points
3rd Larry Nicholas (17), 33 points
NP’s: # B8 Ed Melott
2’s: Graham Johnson, Kris Kritsanajootha , Steve Mulberry, Ed Melott,
Barry Copestake, Andy Redmond, Bob Fagan, Roger Koehler
Whether it was abject bravado by the entire field or induced persuasive
courage by the GM, but whatever the cause the entire field strode back to
the difficult Yellows of this Dye Design. C Flight showed in was up to it in
the person of Sugar Ray who was MoM with his 39 points. Second in the day’s
junior flight was that Irish lass, Kaye Molloy, one ahead on countryperson,
The Crustacean.
CBT led A Flight with a fine 38 points, two clear of G-r-a-h-a-m
J-o-h-n-s-o-n and yet another in front of The Dispatch Rider. Blackpool
Steve took B Flight by four points over Irishman Tom Byrne. Colm Mullen and
The Quiet One, Jan Eriksen, were knotted at 32 points. Colm lost the flip
and had to walk up the podium to claim a prize with but 32 points. Oh, the
shame of it!
Wednesday, November 1,
Crystal Bay - A & B -White Tees, Stableford
A Flight:
1st John Emmerson (9), 39 points
2nd Don Lehmer (13), 37 points
3rd Tony Molloy (11), 36 points
B Flight:
1st Ed Melott (14), 38 points
2nd Steve Ellison (16), 37 points
3rd Bob Lindborg (16), 37 points
C Flight:
1st Roger Koehler (21), 39 points
2nd Kevin Moraghan (17), 37 points
3rd Betty Koehler (32), 37 points
2’s: Don Lehmer, Julian Clarke, Pat Regan, Steve Ellison, Colm Mullen
(2), Colin Davis, Roger Koehler, Jim Burns
Perhaps still shell-shocked from Monday’s test at Khao Kheow, the Society
all moved up to the Whites for the day’s test at Crystal Bay. Perhaps the GM
had a plan as his A Flight winning 39 points was only tied by one player, an
old pal from the Korean days, C Flight’s Good Roger. John bettered the
Lady’s Man and the combo of Irish Tony Molloy and Blackpool Steve Mulberry.
They don’t every week, but Irish eyes were smiling on Tony in the count
back. Roger’s 39 points led an all Korean C Flight Podium, as Col. Kevin and
Good Roger’s wife, Betty, had the best of the count back over New York Slim
and Dave Schelling.
B Flight was led by one of our favorite “howlies”, as farang’s are known in
Hawaii, as Ed Melott’s 38 points edged the Photographer to the Stars and the
Guru of Green Valley.
Friday, November 3, The Emerald-White Tees,
2-Person Scramble - Stroke/Medal
1st Colm Mullen & Mossy Quaid/Roger Koehler - Net 60.4/61.5
2nd Kevin Moraghan & Dave Porter - Net 61.6
3rd Paul West & Brian Wood - Net 62.4
4th Rick Sharp & Joe Mooneyham - Net 63.2
After a busy week, the crowds didn’t subside but the competition was a bit
more relaxed as the gang broke off in two-person teams to slug it out in a
Scramble format.
A casualty from the night before left one four ball a man short, so it was
deemed that one player (Colm Mullen) would partner with each of the other
two (Mossy Quaid and Roger Koehler). The pairing with Irishman Mossy
produced the day’s winning score and the pairing with Good Roger produced
the second best score. With Solomonesque wisdom, and to avoid an inquiry,
the GM deemed that the triumvirate would split an enhanced first place
payout.
Col. Kevin and The Valet’s Best Friend came second while Brits Paul West and
Brian Wood had the bronze. There was enough left over to enhance The
Hermit’s Social Security and buy a modest gift for The Groom’s wedding. It
seemed everyone went home happy or, at least, the grumbling hasn’t found its
way to the back office as of this writing.
Harris & Edwards win final Sriracha competition

B Flight:
1st Peter Harris (21), 44 pts

4th Patrick Brown(22), 39 pts
NP’s: Ian Edwards, Patrick Brown, Alan Pearce, Gordon Everingham
2’s: Donald Hendry, Ian Edwards, Peter Harris
The yellow hat was passed on to J.C. Lhorte
This competition was our final Saturday at Sriracha and Peter Harris and Ian
Edwards finished in style, winning the day in their respective divisions.
Sriracha has been our home base for the past few months but we are now
moving to Eastern Star golf club for the next 6 months for our Saturday
golf.
The Bowling Green golf section would like to thank the Sriracha club, staff,
and all the caddies for their fine handling of our golf group. We managed to
get a few good scores on the day and this was a fitting way to say Good Bye
to everyone.
Tuesday, October 31, Phoenix, Stableford
A Flight:
1st Tom Herrington (19), 40 pts
2nd David Arrowsmith (5), 39 pts
3rd Phil Dwyer (19), 38 pts
4th Fergus Brennan (13), 36 pts
B Flight
1st Terry Hopkins (20), 40 pts
2nd Mam Morel (40), 39 pts
3rd John Morel (36), 37 pts
4th Stan Everingham (22), 36 pts
NP’s: David Arrowsmith, Donald Hendry, Derek Eastham, Tom Herrington
2’s: Fergus Brennan, Tom Herrington, Wolfgang Bade, Terry Hopkins,
Derek Eastham.
The yellow hat was passed onto Thanawat Chanya
Another fine day at Phoenix and the course was in good condition; the greens
were fair and some of the players took advantage to make some good scores.
It is always nice to see new faces on the podium so well done to both Mam
and John.
There were six 2’s made today but one cheap Canuck did not enter the contest
and Gordon Everingham for the 2nd time in recent memory did not collect.
Sure hope he has learned his lesson.
Thursday November 2, Green Valley, Stableford
A Flight:
1st Peter Harris (18), 39 pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (13), 36 pts c/b
3rd Thomas Johansson (4), 36 pts
4th Harvey Samuel (17), 34 pts c/b
B Flight
1st Stan Everingham (22), 39 pts
2nd Mick Heateley (31), 35 pts
3rd John Morel (36), 34 pts
4th Gordon Everingham (26), 32 pts c/b
2s: Fergus Brennan
Green Valley was in great shape and played fair for all, but for some
strange reason the two division winners were the only ones to manage sub par
rounds.
Count backs seemed the be the order of the day, Fergus and Harvey hade the
better of the calculations in the first division whilst Gordon Everingham
did the same in division 2.
Non-2’s: Thomas and Carl
The yellow hat found a home with Om Soduk, hope she wears with pride and a
nice matching yellow golf shirt.
Reg Rawding the proprietor of the Bowling Green made a surprise presentation
of a bottle of wine to Gordon Everingham after he showed a good return to
form recently. Gordon was taken completely by surprise and both he, and the
rest of us who enjoyed the vino would like to say a big thank you to Reg!
If any one is interested in golfing with the Bowling Green we play every
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We meet at Bowling Green at 7:45 am for
breakfast and transportation, and new players are always made to feel
welcome. Give Reg a call on 087-136-5681 to put your name on the list and
join us for a great day of golf, food and beverage.
All Golfers please note that the next two Saturdays, 11th and 18th our
fixtures have been moved to Sunday 12th and 19th due to commitments of the
Eastern Star Club.
Ben wins close contest
at Noble Place
IPGC golf with The Caddy Shack
Tuesday, October 31, Noble Place, Medal
A Medal competition was held over the Noble Place A & C courses at what must
be one of the best value and friendliest venues in the area. The high season
is just around the corner and the large field managed to use both courses to
tee-off.
In Division 2, Les Winch and Ramsey Smith tied with 74 net, with Ramsey
getting the better of the count back decision. Les was left to reflect on
his ‘8’ on the final hole and ‘what might have been’.
Division 1 saw five players off H/c 6 or better all shoot net 74’s. ‘Mighty’
Scott Chisholme, all the way from America, pulled out of the mix with a
level par 72 for second place but one ahead, and claiming the top honours
was 11 handicapper Ben Durham on net 71. All agreed it was a very close
contest.
The ‘twos’ were shared between Steve Nowell, Willy Wilcox and Ben Durham
whilst the ‘Near Pins’, sponsored by the Caddy Shack, went to Jack Spencer,
Scott Chisholme, David Nash and Emmet White.
Thursday, November 2, Pattaya C.C., Stableford
The local Pattaya Country Club was the choice on Thursday for a
Stableford competition and again another large field showed up.
The cut was made at 17 and under and in Division 2, Keith Fortt recorded 33
points for second place, but Phil Smith, playing some fine golf, streaked
away from the pack to notch 39 points and top spot. Division 1 saw David
Nash in second on 35 points with Brian Jacks winning with a fine 39 point

Bernard ‘king of the wind’ at Pattana
PSC golf from The Café Kronborg
Monday, October 30, Eastern Star,
Stableford
Eastern Star acted as host for a Stableford competition in 2 flights, A
Flight 0 to 18 and B Flight 19 up. The course on the day was in fine
condition with the greens a little on the slow side due to the weekly Monday
maintenance.
Brian Noguer took the A Flight with 40 points ahead of Gene Rooney in second
with 37 points, John Dahlseng third with 34 points and Bernard Dupree fourth
with 32 points.
In the B Flight Graham Mitchell took the honours with 38 points ahead of
John Swanson in second with 37 points, Dave Roberts in third with 33 points
with Bent Moeller fourth with 31 points.
Near Pins: Gary Wedl, Dave Richardson, Brian Noguer, John Dahlseng
Long Put: Takeshi Hakozaki, John Swanson
Thursday, November 2, Pattana, Stableford
When the wind blows here it can become a very difficult course.
On this day it did not just blow, it howled and to say the conditions were
difficult would be a vast understatement. To make matters worse carts could
not be taken onto the course, so some long walks for the less than mobile
were the order of the day.
The layout itself was not in its best condition, with sandy greens and
fairways and with a ball that went where it wanted many rounds went to pot.
As usual however, when the going gets tough, the A Flight comes through.
There is always someone who defies the conditions, and in the top flight, 0
to 17, the winner was Bernard Duprez with 41 points. This was actually not
too far in front of second placed Elias Magnusson who scored 39 points. Also
having a good round was Brian Noguer in third with 37 points.
The B Flight, 18 up, was more like what was expected in the wind, with the
winner Mark Brenton, 35 points winning on count back from Graham Mitchell in
second and Graham Buckingham in third on34 points.

Murphy family reigns supreme - at everything
PSC golf from the Oohsa Bar
On our last trip out we enjoyed a great day. Tuesday, 31st of October saw a
group of well-fed golfers leave Oohsa Bar and head for the Noble Place golf
course in just about perfect weather.
The course turned out to be in great condition and the wide-open fairways
provided the opportunity to wind-up and let it rip 300 meters down the
fairway. If only I could. The wind was blowing nicely to help keep us cool
but on most holes it seemed to be against us, just one of those funny things
I suppose. The greens once again had been recently sanded and worked on and
soon will be just great but on this day no one found them easy.
Mastering the conditions on the day was Rich Murphy on 37 points followed by
his wife, Su Murphy, who was runner-up with 35 points on count back over
Jeff Wiley in third. ‘Near Pins’ were won by Mick Heatley, Ed Horrocks and
Keith Hodges.
After the awards, another excellent meal, all for free and then a game of
killer pool where Rich Murphy once again showed that it was the Murphy
family day by winning in great style.
Our next trip on the 14th Nov will be to Plutaluang and once again the
invitation is there for you to join us on what should be another good days
golf. For more information please call Keith Hodges on 087-916-7171
Kitchen on fire at Crystal Bay
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral
2-Day Eclectic Stableford,
Crystal Bay
Day 1 - The Pattaya Golf Society chose Crystal Bay as the venue for a
two-day Stableford eclectic event, day one being on Tuesday, 31st October.
The course was in its usual proud condition, and in true local style, some
initial adrenalin was injected by the Starter before the two flights took to
the tee. With the cut at 18 and under, a good day’s golf was in prospect and
the group was not to be disappointed.
October’s
“Player of the Month” John Cunningham, right, receives his trophy from Mr.
Denis
In an improved Division 2, Emiel van der Wiele was joined by Ray Underwood
and Malcolm Schofield on 33 points for a share of runner-up place. Carl
Lovatt has often flattered to deceive, but on this day everything went to
order and his excellent score of 34 points took the top spot in the flight.
In Division 1, newcomer Ron Dowell - yet another Aussie - made a fine
entrance with his 34 points, and was only two points behind New Zealander
David Thomas who held down the second place with some inspired par golf.
The day’s winner was again John Cunningham and it seems there is no stopping
this “Flying Scotsman” at the moment. With a full head of steam he takes on
all courses with the same vigour and skill. Whispers of “Rule 19” are
beginning to be heard in darkened corners! But what can one do when a golfer
consistently plays to his handicap, firing the best gross, whilst others are
languishing somewhat? John also had the honour of taking sole charge of the
large “twos” pot for his effort on A5.
The Booby Bevy went to Canadian Rick Daniels, making his first appearance
with the PGS, and his low score posted by the lowest handicapped golfer on
the day made him more than a certain winner. Maybe the compulsory wearing of
a kilt will slow Cunningham down on the course!
Day 2 - Thursday arrived and under bright and cloudless skies the
greens were if anything faster, than on the first day. Suitably refreshed
after a day of leisure the large field again took on the “C” and “A” nines
to decide the overall winner.
In the minor event, Division 1 saw Bill Hewitt take centre stage and he did
not complain when he posted a score of 39 points to win the flight from Kris
Kritsnajootha and John Cunningham on 35 points each.
In the second flight, the thought of his final round before an imminent
return to UK sparked Tony Kitchen into life and he fired an outstanding
score of 41 points to win the day from Emiel van der Wiele (38) and Carl
Lovatt (34). In his fifty-six PGS tournaments over the last six months this
loyal and honest golfer gained an amazing 19 points on his first day score
and this propelled him into the lead in the eclectic race, hotly pursued by
Emiel van der Wiel and Carl Lovatt, who were also making superb headway.
Tony eventually won the overall event by only one point from Emiel (46), who
in turn was only one point ahead of Carl (45). What a popular success it
was!
Vince Hatton fired the day’s only birdie “two” on C7 and brought to an end
his personal battle against golf survival, whilst the Booby Bevy went to the
day’s hero by way of thanks for all his efforts on and off the golf course
since joining IPGC in March. Throughout the imminent northern English
winter, memories of his round “on fire” will keep Tony’s spirits warm as he
contemplates a return to the PGS at the OK Corral, hopefully in the not too
distant future.
Bob is ‘Wighton’ target
at The Emerald
PSC golf from The Peacock Place
Together with other golfing groups in the area, our
society was invited to send four players to Eastern Star golf club on
Saturday, October 28, courtesy of Eastern Star, to participate in a
four-person scramble. It was a most generous gesture. The course was in
magnificent condition, complimentary food and drink was in plentiful
supply and a great time was had by all. I would like to thank Eastern
Star Golf Club for their outstanding kindness and hospitality.
Monday, October 30, The Emerald, Stableford
Monday’s outing saw our group visit The Emerald GC where
conditions were less than perfect. The greens had been sanded and the
fairways were far from ‘fair’. We played a Stableford competition and to
make matters even more difficult the wind blew. Out of a group of 14
golfers only one managed to play below his handicap.
Bob Wighton scored a magnificent 40 points playing off H/c 8 while Marty
Allred in second place only managed 33 points playing off H/c 2. Third
place was shared between Captain Bob Philp and Tony Oaks, both with 32
points. The rest of the field were in disarray.
Birdie 2’s were recorded by Bob Wighton, Mark Joshua, Harvey Samual and
Jack Mosely. To drown their sorrows, most of the group headed for
Bangchan Village for a few swift ones and later on to The Peacock Place
for our prize giving.
Wednesday,
November 1,
Treasure Hill, Stableford
Wednesday, which is now our new meeting day, saw us head off
for Treasure Hill GC. It was a beautiful day and there was quite a
breeze, which always makes for interesting conditions on a golf course.
Treasure Hill was not at its best as the greens had been heavily sanded
and the low Stableford points recorded proves how difficult the course
played.
One of our more recent members, Brian Webb managed to score 34
Stableford points for first place whilst in second was Trudy Chadbourne
with 31 points, who beat Paul Crosland on count back.
Matt Anderson and Alan Bishop recorded a ‘2’ each and cleared the pot.
We all enjoyed some tasty complimentary food supplied by The Peacock
restaurant and the rigours of the day were discussed over a few wet and
frosty ones.
Come and join us if you’d like a game of golf with a friendly society.
Our meetings in future will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays to allow
people a days break should they wish to play on Fridays. Our weekly
schedules appears in The Pattaya Mail but if you would like more
information telephone David on 087928 7859 or Bob on 087941 2474.
The Beautiful Game?: Confrontation? Bring it on
by Riz Taylor
I don’t have the time or indeed the inclination to find out exactly when
West Ham last beat Arsenal and Spurs overcame Chelsea on the same
weekend, but it’s probably fair to suggest that it might have been some
time ago, perhaps even when mustachioed footballers would arrive at the
ground in horse-drawn carriages for a nice friendly game of Association
Football.
A surprise indeed, but these two freaky results are exactly what the
Premiership needs, if you ask me. The games are often entertaining, but
in terms of final league positions it’s all been a bit ‘same old - same
old’ in recent years, especially since the arrival of buckets of
Champions League cash which ensures that the rich continue to get
ever-more wealthy.
The Premiership bills itself as the world’s most entertaining football
spectacle and the viewing figures prove this, but complacency is
dangerous and it’s all been a little predictable of late. A surprise
result here and there is what will keep us watching, along with the
occasional bust up between managers. More on that later.
What these two results proved is that there is still hope for everyone
else, a chance - albeit increasingly feint - for sides battling to break
into the really big time to make it. Spurs came so close to Champions
League football this season, undone on the last day of last year by a
bug in the camp that laid much of the squad low with a dose of the
‘runs’ shortly before the match. The momentum looked to have been lost
after a shaky start to this campaign, but finally turning over the
champions on Sunday, Tottenham’s first league victory over Chelsea since
1990, might give the side the crucial belief in their own ability.
Never one to shirk a dig at an official when things haven’t gone his
side’s way, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was quick to slam referee Graham
Poll for a “ridiculous” performance after the 2-1 defeat: “The show is
Chelsea players and Tottenham players,” he said. “They gave a great game
of football, I don’t know why Mr. Poll wanted to be such an important
person in the game. To show a red card to a player for contact in the
box when he was the attacking one I felt is also a bit ridiculous.
“It’s very easy to be a referee and after go home and not have to show
their faces and they don’t have to give explanations. But I prefer to
explain it in the easiest way. Tottenham scored two goals, we scored one
and congratulations to them.”
Yet the real controversy of the weekend came earlier at Upton Park.
Arsenal and West Ham bosses Arsene Wenger and Alan Pardew looked as
though they might come to blows after Wenger reacted angrily when Pardew
celebrated his side’s last-minute winner.
Wenger appeared to shove his opposite number and will undoubtedly face
disciplinary action in the coming weeks. Rightly so too you might say,
and I’d agree with you, but the most worrying repercussion from the
incident was the League Managers’ Association’s calls for the technical
areas - the marked zones that the managers are supposed to stay within
during play - to be placed “at least 20m apart” in an attempt to prevent
repetitions of Sunday’s scenes.
Is this really necessary? Don’t the game’s rulers understand that this
is exactly the kind of thing that we, the fans, want to see? Thanks to
media coaching over the last decade we now see players and managers
alike trotting out bland, uninspiring comments after games. To rid the
game of the occasional bust-up between rival managers would further kill
off the entertainment factor.
Wenger and Pardew’s little spat may be a case of “handbags at ten
paces”, but at least it’s something for us to talk about. I’m not
suggesting that that arguments should be settled by pistols at dawn in
front of a live audience of horrified schoolchildren, but please, please
don’t take anything else of interest away from our game, otherwise all
we’d have to discuss are tactics, formations, and the odd tasty goal
here and there. It doesn’t bear thinking about.
Arsenal face Liverpool on Sunday in what will be billed as the biggest
game of the weekend. Given Liverpool’s recent play this game could turn
out to be as exciting as visiting an elderly relative in a nursing home,
but with any luck we might see some fisticuffs from the opposing
managers if the game gets boring. What’s the French for “What are you
looking at?”
“I know they’ll get behind us”
Newcastle United Comedy Club chairman Freddie Shepherd says
he’ll continue to back under-fire Glenn Roeder as the side’s abysmal
league form gathers pace.
The Toon were sunk by a single goal from Danny Webber in the encounter
with Sheffield United at the weekend, prompting further speculation over
the manager’s future. Roeder’s men sit in nineteenth position after the
defeat, holding off bottom placed Watford by a superior goal difference
of just one.
Shepherd to BBC Radio: “I’ve got full confidence in the players and the
manager. We’ll get out of this blip. I’m no different from any other
Newcastle supporter, and it’s also upset the players and the manager.
The defeat to Sheffield United, considered one of the weaker sides in
the division, became too much for many supporters who sang “Sack the
board” after the match. The Magpies have failed to win in any of their
last seven matches.
Yet Shepherd continues to back his manager, in public at least, as he
desperately attempted to demonstrate his empathy with the unhappy fans.
“Right now it would seem I’m the only one prepared to do this job, and
it’s one I will continue to do to the very best of my ability and with
the best interests of the club at heart”, he said.
“These things happen in football and the fans are entitled to do that.
I’m one of them and I’ll never criticise the Geordie supporters. I know
they’ll get behind us.
“We’ve had nine injuries, including Michael Owen, who was brought in to
replace Alan Shearer, and Keiron Dyer with long term injuries. It’s not
an excuse, it’s a fact. But I’m not going to drop my head, I’m going to
get in there and fight.”
Damien Duff, a 5 million-pound summer signing from Chelsea who has been
pressed into covering for the Magpies lack of strikers, has talked of
his side’s lack of goals.
“They are not flowing at the minute, but I will keep working hard and
hopefully they will come. But I am not worrying about myself, the most
important thing is the team. This is a massive club, it is a special,
special place and the fans deserve better. I just want to help the team
get back to winning ways.”
Let’s just hope nobody is holding their breath. See you next time.
John McDonald retains
‘Golfer of the Month’ award
PSC golf from TheBunker
Monday, October 30, Bangpra,
Stableford
The final Stableford game of October was held at Bangpra Golf Course and
John McDonald rounded off a splendid month by jointly winning the A
Flight along with Gerry Cooney. Gerry has pushed John all the way
throughout the past few weeks, but he couldn’t prevent the ‘Golfer of
the Month’ trophy going to John for the second month in a row. Both
scored 39 points today to win ahead of William Macey, who finished on 38
points.
John McDonald claims the ‘Golfer of the Month’ title for October
In the B Flight we had a four-way tie for first place with Brian Walker,
Jim Wooler, Geoff Hart and PJ Redmond all scoring 33 points to share the
spoils!
Near pin prizes were shared between Gerry Cooney, Fred Griffin, Jim
Wooler and Charlie Gooch.
Wednesday,
November 1,
Crystal Bay, Medal
The Bunker Boy’s held their first Medal comp of the month at
Crystal Bay and we saw Gordon Melia make a happy return to Thailand by
winning the A Flight with net 73, Charlie Gooch came second one shot
back on net 74 and Scott Eaton took third place with net 77.
Trevor Sharman won the B Flight with a net 74 ahead of Jim Payne net 75
and Geoff Parker in third with a net 76.
Surprisingly nobody in either the A or B Flight broke par, the strong
winds playing havoc for most of the day being blamed for the poor
scores.
Friday, November 3, Green Valley, Stableford
Green Valley was the setting on Friday for the second
Stableford comp of the week and with the cut at 17 and under we had a
close finish in the A Flight; John King and Tony Scambler tied for the
runner up spot, both finishing with 35 points behind Roger Privett and
John McDonald who tied for first place with 36 points.
In the B Flight we had a three-way tie for third place between Dave
Keats, Fred Griffin and Trevor Sharman, all scoring 30 points, in second
place came a surprised Bryan Rought with 32 points and the winner of the
B Flight with 37 points was Paul Davies.
Near pins went to Roger Privett, William Macey, Gordon Melia and Charlie
Gooch.

Jomtien Golf with the I.P.G.C.
Monday, October 30, The Emerald,
Stableford
With a couple of last minute cancellations the field of 25 took off for
the Emerald course for a Stableford competition on a very warm day. The
divisional cut was eighteen and below today, so a tough prospect for the
higher handicapers for nearest the pin prizes on this course.
Dannie Larsen, playing off 17 and S.A. Mike, now 5, won the beverages on
the fifth and thirteenth holes and in Div 2, Les Hall and Dougie
Carysforth won theirs on the seventh and fifteenth. There were 23 in the
two’s competition but with no winners the pot was rolled over to
Wednesday.
Thirty-four points secured a win for Ken Foster in Div 2 leaving LeRoy
Huntingdon’s 32 and Bev Ewens’ 30 points to claim second and third
respectively. John McLoone’s 37 points won the Div 1 prize after some
erratic putting on the tough 17th green with Paddy Wilson in second (33
points) and Joop Medze’s third (31 points).
Wednesday
November 1,
Century Chonburi, Monthly Medal
It’s that time of the month again, so a few groans about the
distance of the venue and also the format. The front nine greens were
all found to be sanded which didn’t please a lot of the players at this
time of the year.
There was a double rollover on the 2’s today, but the only winner with a
remarkable shot on the 215yd 7th hole was Ted Morris, leaving his tee
shot two feet from the pin. Ted’s tee shot also won him a bottle of Rum,
a prize that was slowly disappearing sitting back in the bar at
Paweenas.
Ken Foster was the only other winner and he won the Div 2 bottle on the
13th , so a gradual build up of prizes to an Xmas special game.
Ben Findon’s net 71 took the Division 1 top spot and Ted Morris came in
second with a 75. Miss Nom’s 72 just pipped Les Hall’s 73 to win the Div
2 battle. The ladies tipple of the day went to the sand lady herself,
Miss Nom, who, whilst running up towards the 18th green and just about
to jump over the water ditch, tripped and fell into it.
Jomtien Golf meets every Monday and Wednesday at Paweenas, Soi 5 Jomtien
Beach Road at around 9.00am for a 10.30 tee off time. Transport and club
hire are available , please sign up in the bar or ring Glyn on 086 837

The Square Ring
by Howie Reed
Many old time boxing fans think of Freddie Roach as a
boxer who went 39-13 over an all too short 8-year career. Others know
him as the trainer of champions with his brightest star being the “Pac
Man” Manny Pacquiao.
As the days grow shorter towards Pacquiao-Morales III, it seems that
Freddie is becoming a “trash talker” with a little humor. With both
fighters observing the WBC pre fight weigh-in rules there was an opening
for the “new” Roach humor.
In preparation for Pacquiao, Morales has hired Velocity Sports
Performance, “certified experts” to get him ready. When Morales weighed
in at 142lbs all the experts were in attendance. “I have never seen so
many people surround one man to make sure he eats so little,” said
Roach. “That was no weigh-in, it was a Weight Watchers meeting. I don’t
know what Velocity has on his menu, but I guarantee you on November 18,
Manny will be serving Erik a steady diet of Reyes leather all night long
until he can eat no more.”
“Your Lordship, do you still want me to do the weekly update?”
“By all means Jeeves. Proceed with caution as the world is watching.”
“Thank you your Lordship. Fashung 3K Battery got another win on home
turf with a 5th round knockout of Filipino Edward Escriber. It’s not
really that big a deal for 3K as his opponent Escriber is (2-25-2) this
century. In 63 fights 3K has only fought twice out side of the Kingdom
and he’s never held a “real” world title. He was the WBF champ but no
one seemed to notice. You told our loyal readers that David Tua was
going to fight Ross Puritty last Friday in New York. Puritty got hurt
and Abraham “The African Assassin” Okine stepped in.
“On Halloween Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai got his 49th win when he
impressively stopped Sataporn Singwancha over 4 stanza’s at Ban-kwao in
the Chaiyaphum Province. It’s said that Yodsanan is looking to fight for
either the WBA or WBC lightweight title. He’ll get a WBC fight against
Israel Vazquez.
“On Monday there are two WBC title fights in Japan. It’ll be champ
Hozumi Hasegawa (20-2) against Genaro Garcia (35-4) for the WBC Bantam
title and Eagle Kyowa (16-1) vs. Lorenzo Trejo (27-14) for the WBC straw
belt. At the WBC convention in Dubrovnik/Cavtat it was decided that this
card will use open scoring. That means that after the 4th and 8th the
scores will be announced. The WBC issued a statement saying, ‘Other
subjective sports have open scoring where the public knows the score as
the competition is actively taking place. So why not boxing?’
“That’s my report Your Lorsdship.”
Nice job Jeeves.
Jeeves you could have mentioned that David Tua got yet another “new”
opponent for last Saturday nights fight in New York City. First it was
Kelvin Davis, then Ross “Less Than” Purrity and finally something call
the Abraam “The African Assassin” Okine. They couldn’t find a heartbeat
in Okine so when Maurice Wheeler (10-8-1) left a mist on a mirror he
stepped in. What may tell you more about David Tua than his 7 round KO,
is that it actually took the man from the “Land of Kiwi’s and nervous
sheep” seven rounds in what was called a “competitive” fight.
The Square Ring predicted a blow out before Floyd Mayweather jr, won the
WBC Welter title last Sunday. This column was spot on in predicting that
Carlos Baldomir (43-10-6) would get blown away in the Las Vegas desert.
Pattaya Beach Boxing Guru O.R. Cross reports from his penthouse.
“The fight itself was so one-sided that two of the judges scored it 120
to 108. The third judge mercifully gave the Argentinian two rounds but I
wondered which fight he was watching. It was just a case of too much
speed and skill. In one round Baldomir had Mayweather in a corner and
threw seven punches that all missed. In two separate rounds the
announcers counted 19 punches landed by Mayweather to 5 by Baldomir.
“Mayweather followed instructions by his corner and didn’t seem to miss
his uncle Roger who is in the ‘monkey house’. Since the only Spanish I
know is, ‘Por favor’, ‘Uno mas cerveza’ ‘y donde esta las Senoritas?’, I
don’t know what advice Baldomir was getting but it wouldn’t have
mattered. He was simply outclassed and outgunned. He didn’t give up but
through a translator Baldomir admitted that Mayweather was very fast. An
understatement.
Mayweather vs. De la Hoya will be a record-breaking barn burner and
Mayweather vs. Mosely could be something I might stay up past 8:00 to
watch. This report has been filed before ‘hitting the trail’ to Walking
Street and looking for girls in their Loy Kratong costumes. The problem
is that in costume it’s hard to know which one might be a katoey.”
As the French have want to say O.R., ‘Viva la difference’. O.R. ended
the report with, “For me personally, the highlight of the fight card was
the post-fight interview with the always irritating Larry Merchant. When
Merchant started to ask about the fight, Mayweather told him, ‘You know
nothing about boxing and you hope I lose. Let me do the boxing and you
stick to commentating.’ You tell ‘em Floyd!”
The other “big fight” last weekend was Sergei Liakhovich (23-2)
defending his WBO heavyweight title against Shannon Briggs (48-4-1). In
round one Briggs landed a pretty good punch. From then until I fell
asleep in the 10th not a darn thing happened. The 12,000 fans booed as I
slipped into the arms of Morpheus. Low and behold I woke up the next
morning to read that Briggs knocked Liakovich out.
“Shannon Briggs exploded in the last 30 seconds in the 12th and final
round to score two miraculous knockdowns - the last of which left
Liakhovich sprawled out on the timekeeper’s table outside the ring as
referee Bobby Ferrara waved off the action with one second to go.”
The question then arises, if Bobby Ferrara hadn’t stopped the fight but
had started the count and the final bell rang who would have won the
fight? By all accounts Liakhovich was three points ahead on two judges’
cards. Two knockdowns constitute a 10-7 round which would have given the
former champ a draw that would have retained his title. On the other
hand if a fighter can’t be saved by the bell in any round and the count
got to 10 same - same.
This Sunday IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (46-3) defends
in New York City against Calvin Brock whose 29-0 record is a little
deceiving. It’s deceiving because he really hasn’t been in with anything
special or even ordinary. In the heavyweight divisions that’s saying
something. Brock got this shot at the heavy title by beating Tomor
Ibragimov, Zuri Lawrence and “opponent” David Bostic. Klitschko should
win unless he gets tired, passes out in the 5th round and then still he
may win by UD.
Any one that thinks there’s a better flyweight in the world than
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (62-2) is full of beans. He’s defended the title
15 times and his 2 loses were way back in 1995-96 to Jerry Pehayahay. In
horse racing there’s a term called “horses for courses”. In boxing that
can also be the case as Pehayahay’s record of 40-52 makes Wonjongkam’s
losses to him just one of them boxing deals. ‘Victim in waiting’ number
16 in trying to wrest the title away from Wonjongkam is Monelisi Myekeni
(21-2) of East London, South Africa. They’ll meet next Friday in Korat
in a bout that surely will be televised.
“What’s that Jeeves? Don’t call you Shirley. No my good man I wasn’t
calling you Shirley. I wrote that ‘surely’ next Friday’s WBC flyweight
bout will be on television. No we’re not going to the fight. Yes you can
go down to the TQ with your friends and watch it. And now Jeeves ... I
say, you poured that well. You are a treasure.”
Dream Team take title whilst Division 2 hots up
League action from the Pattaya Bowling Green
Still everything to play for in
Division 2 as the race for top spot goes down to the wire.
Report by Barry Hooper
League play on Thursdays and Fridays has only two weeks to go for most
teams in this set of leagues with all still very much to play for.
In Division 1, the Dream Team (Albert and Peter Dancer) have clinched
the title, a great effort as they were only promoted to the top flight
last season.
The other result worthy of note this week was the defeat of Pot Hunters
by the in-form team of HMP Slade (Huddersfield John and Graham) with a
28-10 scoreline, and one of the best results of this season so far.
Division 2 sees the Yingyangs consolidating their position at the top.
West Eagles and Golfers are close behind however with games in hand. The
title race is now between these three teams with just 4 games to be
played. This was after Thanidas slipped out of contention following
their defeat by the Golfers.
Two new leagues are being scheduled with 10 teams each so keep looking
at the club notice board and these reports for further information

200 Bowlers - Kaew, Wade, La,
Sven, Nual, Jim & Konrad.
VFW Post 9876 was the only top team to win this week
and increased their first place lead as they took three points from
second placed Café Kronborg. Ooy led VFW with a 522 series.
Montana dropped to third place after losing all four points to House of
the Golden Coin who moved into fourth place. Diamond Shop took all four
points from Domicil with Teuvo rolling a 518 series for Domicil and Rich
a 513 for Diamond Shop. Mai’s Thai Restaurant won three points from
Three Sisters. La rolled a 545 series, Kaew a 529 series for Three
Sisters and Barry had a 538 pin count for Mai’s Thai Restaurant.
The best team bowling of the day was turned in by Brother D and they
climbed out of last place as they took four points from Jack & Tar.
Konrad bowled a 216 game, 553 series, Leo had a 536 and Babu a 512
series for Brother D. Jack & Tar did not bowl badly but they were just
outclassed in this match. Somrak bowled a 533 series for Shenanigans but
they were only able to win one point from Café Ole. Nok, bowling as a
pacer, had a good day as she knocked down 552 pins.
Dale on song at Pattaya C.C.
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Somehow the scorecards for the 24th Oct. got turned
in without the data being recorded. I believe that Sus Ige won the day
with around 40 points but I’m not too sure.
This week Dale Murphy hit the top again with a reasonable score of 39
points. Playing off 12, Dale is showing his capabilities as a golfer.
His all around game is solid and he has improved his chipping and
putting tremendously in the past few months.
The next closest to Dale was Herb Ishinaga with 36 points. The rest of
the field sat at the mid-thirties while Rodney Ishii went through the
bottom with 17 points. I don’t think he can remember the last time he
shot so badly. Rodney wasn’t too happy as the guys were there with their
hands out to collect.
Dick named top golfer for October
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday, October 31, Noble Place,
Stableford
The last Tuesday of the month at Tropical Bert’s is always an important
one as the winner of the Alan Bolton ‘Golfer of the Month’ award is
announced. And so breakfast at Bert’s was a busy time as all girded
themselves for the trip up the road.
Alan Bolton presents the ‘Golfer of the Month’ award to Dick Warberg.
At Noble Place the new reception seems to be finished and they are
having a sale of merchandise, as the rumour is they are going to change
their name. The shower and changing area are fine also, quite a good
upgrade.
So on to the course and today we chose the A & C ‘nines’. Both were in
reasonable condition and we managed to get around them without any major
casualties.
Round over and back at Bert’s it was fish and chips and then into the
presentations. After a fine performance, the winner on the day was
announced to be Tony Thorne with Chris ‘The Fish’ Youngman in second,
his highest finish ever, and Alex Kazasis and Bernie Cairns in third and
fourth respectively. Finally to the main ‘Golfer of The Month’ award and
this prestigious title was won by a comfortable street by Dick Warberg.
Well done to all the winners.
A memorable month comes to an end, which also saw ‘Bert’s Boys’ take the
Low Net and Low Gross prizes at the recent Eastern Star Golf
Invitational. Well done to the team and well done and thank you to
Eastern Star for laying on such a fine event.
