The long established and very popular Balcony has now opened its second branch, the Balcony Terrace, located in the Windmill Hotel Plaza on the Pattaya-Naklua Road.
The formal opening took place at 9:09 a.m. on October 26, with Sopin Thappajug, chairman of the associate judges at the Chonburi Juvenile and Family Court as guest of honor cutting the ribbon, along with chairman of the Balcony Group Rachen Klaunklard, general manager Sarawut Pongput, and branch manager Panom Hokkratok.

Sopin Thappajug performs the auspicious ribbon cutting ceremony assisted by Rachen Klaunklard, Sarawut Pongput and Panom Hokkratok.
Located on Soi 4 in North Pattaya, the original Balcony Restaurant and Bakery has been open for 14 years and is an established favorite amongst local residents as well as with tourists. Rachen said the new restaurant follows a similar concept in food styles and fast service.
Two million baht has been spent on the modern Thai décor of the new premises, and Rachen said the location, in the same zone as the first outlet, was chosen because this is a very large market for this particular concept.
A Buddhist ceremony was held in the morning of the opening, with nine monks from Chonglom Temple participating. At the auspicious time of 9:09 a.m. the ribbon was cut and the shop declared open.
Donations from guests who attended the ceremony will be presented to the Chonburi Juvenile and Family Court under the Family Clinic Project. Pattaya Mail Publishing Co Ltd led by managing director Pratheep Malhotra participated in the fund raising event.
The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day. For the Balcony Terrace, tel 0 3837 1544, and the Balcony Restaurant and Bakery tel 0 3841 1429.

Help for Chantaburi

The Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya (RCOTP) was informed by Charter President Peter Thorand about the problems in Chantaburi following the severe flooding that recently took place, and has resulted in extensive damage and hardship within the local community. At the club’s regular meeting on Thursday 12th the majority of members upon learning of this immediately contributed to a relief fund.

Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya donated money to sister club Rotary Club Chantanimit to assist in flood recovery in Chantaburi.

An impressive 23,000 baht was raised from the members, and the club decided to also donate out of its funds which took the total donation to 40,000 baht.
Following the meeting, on Monday October 16, Treasurer Bob Denzel and Rotarian Hans Schaad traveled down to Chantaburi with a cheque for sister club Rotary Club Chantanimit, to hand out funds where best needed. Rotarian Hans Schaad also had a cheque for 15,000 baht from RC Marina, which he duly handed over as well.
On the following day they were shown some of the very badly damaged houses. Especially the wooden structures are of concern, as serious damage will take 4/6 days to appear. Accompanying them was a member of the city council.

PCEC meeting takes a different and original turn

Thor Halland addresses the PCEC.

The Sunday October 29 meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) at Henry J. Bean’s included a speaker with whom regular attendees will be very familiar. Thor Halland has regularly provided informative talks on the history of Thailand but this week things took a different and original turn.
Thor’s talk was entitled ‘You Too Can Be Caesar’ and was based upon the game show ‘Time Commanders’ which has appeared on both the History Channel and the UK’s Channel Four.
Not only did Thor provide a very interesting history lesson but his interactive presentation using computer generated images brought the Battle of the River Trebbia back to life. This was an ancient conflict fought between the Roman and Carthaginian, led by Hannibal, forces in 321 BC.
Furthermore, it provided an opportunity to step into the shoes of a general on the battlefield and, possibly, rewrite history by changing the final outcome of the battle!
Regular attendee Andy Harwood stepped up and manipulated the Carthaginian troops, which unfortunately resulted in a devastating defeat for his side! However, the computer generated images provided a realistic and exciting insight as to how the battle must have been fought.
Thor then provided some very interesting facts regarding how battles during this era would have been fought and how elephants were often used with great effect.
The PCEC was pleased to welcome the owner of PS Plaza, Pongsak. PS Plaza, located in Central Pattaya, contains Tops Supermarket. Pongsak wishes to renovate the second floor and asked for suggestions as to the shops or facilities which could be made available. Numerous suggestions were put forward.
Further information was provided regarding club excursions. Max Rommel, co-chairman and treasurer, announced that the final itinerary of the PCEC organised 3 day excursion to Kanchanaburi, taking place on November 21-23 would be announced next week.
MC Gary Brown announced that the procedures which would enable US citizens to register to vote in the forthcoming elections in that country were now available.
The regular Open Forum was then underway and this proved to be the usual lively and entertaining session.
