Top police commanders reassured Russian, Chinese and Indian
diplomats that a high-season crackdown is reducing crimes against tourists
in Pattaya.
Royal Thai Police advisor Gen Wuthi Liptapanlop, Regional 2 commander Lt.
Col. Vinai Thongsong and Chonburi station head Maj. Gen. Khatcha Thatsart,
met with foreign-embassy representatives Jan. 28.
Wuthi told the diplomats that the first three weeks of the month-long crime
sweep has seen criminal incidents decrease 90 percent. Officers have stopped
7,000 cars and motorbikes in road checkpoints, making hundreds of drug and
weapons arrests.
In addition to the 611 officers deployed, police also had trained and called
on 300 Thai and foreign volunteers to assist. Police also briefed the
embassy officials on the opening of a consumer-protection center at Pattaya
City Hall.
The police officials were not asked what would happen once the high-profile
crackdown ends this weekend.
