Cooney sparkles at Emerald
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Jan. 28, Mt. Shadow –
Stableford
Interesting high season weather today as 25 golfers set off in
light rain, which got heavier and heavier as we approached the Mountain
Shadow course. Entering the clubhouse we were confronted by around 40 to
50 golfers anxiously waiting to see if they could start their round, and
even a min-bus filling up with golfers who had already decided to call
it a day.
Mike
Corner, January ‘Golfer of the Month’.
The Bunker Boys are (mostly) a hardy lot, and Colin Greig was heard to
say “I’m playing today, no matter what”, whilst four of the fair weather
golfers (who shall remain nameless) decided to head for home.
We sat around for about 15 minutes past our tee time, and then decided
to head off in light rain, and by the time the third group had finished
the first hole the rain had stopped and it remained dry for the rest of
the day. Mountain Shadow is one of the quickest drying courses in the
area, and after a couple holes, the course was in good shape, in fact
the fourth, fifth and sixth groups commented that they had a completely
dry round!
Tony Berry was the star on the day, carding 3 birdies in 5 holes on his
way to 36 points, winning the A Flight, but he was second place overall
on the day to Gary Austin who scored 38 points in the B Flight.
Richard Baldotto, playing his final game before returning to U.K., took
second place in the B Flight and a near pin – hard luck Richard, going
back to the cold weather just when you start to get some form – but see
you next year!
A Flight
1st Tony Berry (10) 36pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (14) 35pts
3rd Keith Norman (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Gary Austin (17) 38pts
2nd Richard Baldotto (25) 35pts
3rd Randy Manson (25) 34pts
Near Pins: Richard Baldotto, Randy Manson, Keith Norman and Paul Smith.
Wednesday, Jan. 30,
The Emerald – Medal
The second medal round of the month saw a good turnout for
the popular Emerald course. The course was in reasonable condition, but
unfortunately the rain was intermittent all day and came down
particularly heavily as the last few groups were completing the final
holes.
Nothing however, could dampen Gerry Cooney’s day as he went through the
outward nine in two over par, and eventually finished in the clubhouse
with a net 67, which was only one point better than Peter Habgood who
won the B Flight with net 68. Both winners were playing off handicaps a
couple of shots higher than they would consider normal, so they’ll
hopefully be back playing off their “real” handicaps soon!
Jack Robertson had a bit of a drama with red ants, and was the first
player to fall foul of the new Bunker rule, when he mistakenly thought
he was entitled to a free drop, only to be pulled up by our ever
vigilant rules official, Tony Robbins. Tony had a traumatic day himself,
as he encountered tree trouble on the par four 12th hole, eventually
carding a eight, which cost him dearly on the day, and also effectively
ended his late charge for the Golfer of the Month title.
Mike Corner took January’s title, even though he’s been absent in sunny
Bhutan for the last three games – get ready to ring the bell when you
come back next week Mike!
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (14) net 67
2nd Paul Smith (2) net 71
3rd Tony Robbins (12) net 72
B Flight
1st Peter Habgood (21) net 68
2nd Jorn Hughes (17) net 72
3rd Eddie Kelly (17) net 74
Near Pins: Gary Austin, Tony Robbins and Paul Smith (2).
Friday, Feb. 1, Khaow Keow C&B – Stableford
Thirty-one golfers today as we set off to Khao Keow in bright
sunny weather, in total contrast to the last few games. We arrived at
the course to find, yet again, there were no caddies and some of us had
to make do with gardeners, kitchen staff, and in my case an engineer -
fortunately my “engineer” turned out to be an 8 handicap golfer, who
could read the greens better than most caddies!
The first group got away after only a few minutes delay and the round
progressed smoothly with only a few minor holdups for the rest of the
day. The course is in good shape at the moment, although a few golfers
thought the greens could have been quicker – masochists!
We had the pleasure of the company of aspiring professional Patrick
Kelly who had a fine round of gross 70 (off the back tees), but with his
+3 handicap, this only gave him 35 points. Patrick was one of those that
suffered a little on the greens, and his score included 35 putts, so
with a little bit of good fortune he could have been carding a truly
superb score.
Colin Greig was the best of the “lesser mortals” and the only other
golfer to better his handicap on the day, winning the A flight on 37
points. Neil Griffin won the B flight with 34 points, but there was a
whole clutch of golfers with 31 points giving Buff a real headache to
sort out the count backs.
A Flight
1st Colin Greig (9) 37pts
2nd Keith Norman (12) 36pts
B Flight
1st Neil Griffin (hcp. 27) 34pts
Near Pins: Gerry Cooney, Patrick Kelly and Lee Butler (2).
The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of
The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a
friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663
for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on

Michael masters Monthly Medal
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Ellison
Monday, Jan. 28, Green Valley (white tees) –
Monthly Medal
1st Michael Hastie (19) net 73
2nd Murray Hart (14) net 73
3rd Brent Philp (15) net 74
It’s always a good turnout for Green Valley on Mondays, and when that is
combined with our Monthly Medal, everyone in town shows up.
It was a bit of a rough old time for Phil today, as groups had to be
shuffled around as some balked at the rain and never showed up, others
started then stopped after a few holes, and even more just waited it out and
finished the round comfortably.
Rain is no reason to stop a competition. If there is lightning present, then
yes, play must be stopped. Generally, we never get absolutely rained out
here in Pattaya. Just wait it out and you will see a gap in the weather to
finish your round. That is what Michael Hastie chose to do and was rewarded
for the decision. Michael has been a great help with our computer systems so
a public thanks for that mate! Hastie finished with a net 73 and won on
count back over Murray Hart.

Michael Hastie, medal winner for January.
Third place went to our buddy Brent Philp (no relation to
Billabong Bob!) who is on his annual snowbird migration from snowy Canada.
It is amazing how many guys from the Vancouver area visit us every year, and
a great bunch of guys they are.
Our next Monthly Medal is on Wednesday the 27th February at Royal Lakeside,
so pencil that date in on your schedule.
Wednesday, Jan. 30, Crystal Bay (white tees) – Stableford
1st Trevor Robins (21) 37pts
T2nd Phil Smedley (13) 35pts
T2nd Peter Hynard (13) 35pts
T2nd Stephen Blazsanyik (16) 35pts
Crystal Bay was our host for this Wednesday’s outing and once again we were
full of mixed emotions. This is a lovely track and in great condition, but
it is so damn hard! The greens were very quick, so a few three-putt
adventures should not do your head in, as it will happen to most golfers on
this course.
Only one of the pack, Trevor Robins, managed to shoot a better score than
their handicap on this day and his achievement won a first place in today’s
competition. A trio of 35’s shared second place with Phil Smedley, Peter
Hynard and Stephen Blazsanyik (86 Scrabble points!) all in the frame. Thanks
again for joining us for another great day of golf.
Friday, Feb. 1, Eastern Star (white tees) – Stableford
1st Pierre Cere (9) 35pts
2nd Ken Aihara (5) 32pts
3rd Phil Smedley (13) 32pts
It has been quite some time since we have been out to Eastern Star. It’s not
because we don’t like the course layout. It’s not because we don’t like the
price. It has always been a point of contention that Eastern Star has some
serious issues with maintenance and upkeep, so that is what has kept us
clear for so long.
I remember the last time we played here I wrote of the poorly trained
caddies who were just tearing up the fairways by driving the carts right
through the muddiest and wettest parts of the course. That will never win
you any friends on the greenskeeping staff. It seems a bit better now, so we
will keep an eye on it and see how it goes. This is a Robert Trent Jones,
Jr. designed golf course and I am sure he would wish they treated her like
the star she could be.
Pierre Cere won here today, and the French-Canadian deserved the win as he
was 3 shots ahead of the second place golfers. Our Captain Phil Smedley and
NFL crazy Ken Aihara tied with 32 Stableford points on their cards. With any
luck at all we will be back here, but this is a course you have to keep an
eye out for.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on Monday,

Greenaway back in the frame at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Friday prize-getters (from
left): Ger Lodge, John Player, Tony McDonough and Paul Greenaway.
Monday, Jan. 28, Burapha - Stableford
Only 27 players to Burapha today (C & D) as the
weather turned some players off, leading to one or two cancellations. The
day started off overcast and cool while at the Outback having breakfast and
when we got to Burapha we were greeted by light rain that continued for most
of the round.
The rain didn’t affect the course and buggies were allowed on the course so
no ‘lift, clean and place’. The course has been heavily booked for the last
month and it is starting to show the wear and tear that comes with some many
rounds and the tees and the fairways need some TLC with a lot of divots not
being repaired, especially in the front of the greens. However, the greens
are still good and although they were not as fast as last week, they were
still great to putt on.
Two divisions down to five places as there were no ‘2’s on the day and some
good scores were recorded in both divisions with a three-way count back on
37 points in Division 1, between John Cunningham, Geoff Stimpson & Pete
Stonebridge and Division 2 being won by Chris Thompson with the best score
of the day, 38 points, from his good mate, Clint Pingree with 36.
There were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0-15)
1st John Cunningham (7) 37pts
2nd Geoff Stimpson (6) 37pts
3rd Pete Stonebridge (16) 37pts
4th Sel Wegner (13) 35pts
5th Stephen Mann (11) 34pts
Div B (16+)
1st Chris Thompson (24) 38pts
2nd Clint Pingree (30) 36pts
3rd Noddy Moyle (18) 32pts
4th Tim Knight (21) 31pts
5th Greg Hill (18) 31pts
Tuesday, Jan. 29, Khao Kheow – Stableford
A good turnout of 20 Outbackers travelled up to
Khao Kheow on an over cast day which proved just perfect weather for a game
of golf. Today we started on the dreaded C course (to be followed by B)
playing off the yellows, with OB on the right and the long stretch of water
down the left.
Steve Plant, who played the hole to par and was clearly happy with his
start; wasn’t paying too much attention to where he was walking en-route to
C2 as he was too busy talking and unfortunately disappeared down a drain
hole almost up to his waist. He was very lucky that he didn’t hurt himself.
After the incident the Greenkeeper put a stick with a red flag on it to warn
others.
The greens were disappointing as they were pretty slow and not consistent
but it seemed the untimely rain during the last few days has prevented them
from cutting the grass. The B loop, was pretty average and the greens even
slower
One question to ask, how can anyone lose 12 golf balls on the way round? One
man can but no names mentioned … One thing is certain, it wasn’t Peter
Erikson who had an excellent round for 37pts playing off 5 to post the best
score of the day and take the Div A honours; five clear of the second
placed, Steve Plant.
Div B was won by Suzi with 34pts, from John Player (33) and Chris Thompson,
who headed a three way count back on 30.
There was one ‘2’ from Peter Erikson on C8.
Div A (0-15)
1st Peter Erikson (5) 37pts
2nd Steve Plant (12) 32pts
3rd Allen Raaen (9) 31pts
Div B (16+)
1st Suzi Lawton (19) 34pts
2nd John Player (20) 33pts
3rd Chris Thompson (23) 30pts
Wednesday, Jan. 30, Siam Plantation – Stableford
Eleven players for Siam Plantation to play the
Tapioca and Pineapple courses, the course was again in great condition and
the marshalls got us away on time and we had a great run and finished in
just under four hours. The conditions were just about perfect for golf,
slightly overcast, cool with no breeze and receptive greens and the scores
did reflect the conditions.
Only one division plus the ‘2’s and Jim Bryan had the best score of the day
with 39 points off his 15 handicap, great golf Jim! Mitch Black was second
with 37 points off his 4 handicap; Mitch had 34 gross first nine and
unfortunately finished bogey, double bogey, bogey for 41 on the second nine.
In third was Chris Thompson with 36 points off his 23 handicap, following up
his win on Monday at Burapha.
There was only one ‘2’ from Mitch Black (C3)
1st Jim Bryan (15) 39pts
2nd Mitch Black (4) 37pts
3rd Chris Thompson (23) 36pts
Wednesday, Jan. 30, Greenwood – Stableford
17 Outbackers played C & A today at Greenwood off
the yellow tees; a few commented that the course was too short, sorry lads I
got mixed up with Treasure Hill tees.
We had a slight hiccup at the beginning as the starter said that we were
playing C then he diverted us all to B, then back to C but we all teed off
on time playing preferred lies on the fairways, due to all the rain.
However, the rain didn’t really affect the course too much, which was
generally in very good condition.
The management had assured us the day before that there would be no problems
with a big competition being played at Greenwood at the same time as us,
unfortunately that wasn’t to be, as we had to have a pit stop after our
front nine and wait for 20 minutes to allow the competition through. It
wasn’t the end of the world and nothing that a can of cold amber nectar
couldn’t sort out while we waited and didn’t spoil a very good day out with
good value for money.
There were two ‘2’s from Murray Hart & Sugar Ray.
1st John O’Keefe (16) 41pts
2nd Murray Hart (14) 38pts
3rd Jack Piercefield (23) 36pts
Friday, Feb. 1, Green Valley – Stableford
54 starters to Green Valley on a lovely day for
golf, sunny with a little light breeze but as there has been a lot of rain
this week, some areas were very wet and muddy underfoot so it was good that
we had ‘lift, clean and place’ on the fairways. However, generally the
course was still in good condition, although the greens slow but were still
good to putt on.
The scoring was excellent with the best score of the day coming from David
Davies in Div D with 41pts with Clint Pingree (39pts) in second. Clint’s
brother-in-law, Chris Thompson, concluded a great week’s golf for him with
yet another podium finish, this time fourth on 32. Chris’s score line
earlier this week reads like this; Monday (Burapha) 1st with 38pts, Tuesday
(Khao Kheow) 3rd with 30pts, Wednesday (Siam Plantation) 3rd with 36pts.
Well done mate!
Paul Greenaway returned to the frame after being out of form for two or
three weeks which has seen his handicap drift out to 9; but today he amassed
40pts to win the premier division from his good friend and playing partner,
Paul Bourke with 39. Welcome back to Andy Todd on a fleeting visit, in third
with 37, beating visiting Scotsman and friend of Suzi’s, Eddie Allan on
count back.
Big Kev Hamilton was delighted to find himself the winner of B division with
38 ahead of Bob Finley with 37 and Div C was won by Ger Lodge (37) from John
Player with 36.
There was only one ‘2’ coming from Tony McDonough.
Finally at the end of the first month of the “Race 2 Bangkok”; Murray Hart
continues to lead with 4,400pts from John Player (3,500pts), and two tied on
2,800pts, Peter Erikson & Tim Knight.
Div A (0-12)
1st Paul Greenaway (9) 40pts
2nd Paul Bourke (11) 39pts
3rd Andy Todd (12) 37pts

Foul weather makes for poor scores
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Jan, 28, Greenwood A & C (white
tees) - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
Division 1(0-16)
1st Martin Grimoldby (5) 31pts
2nd Mark Lang (7) 31pts
3rd Rainer Helling (10) 30pts
Division 2 (17+)
1st Walter O’Keefe (18) 38pts
2nd Heikki Vanninen (22) 28pts
3rd Pekka Hyrkka (19) 28pts
Red Division
1st Kiti Ulvio-Peltonen (9) 29pts
2nd Saara Halko (19) 26pts
Constant rain at the course from 7 a.m. meant that when the group arrived
for their appointed tee time they found most of the groups designated to
have already started still standing, sitting or laying around the clubhouse.

Martin Grimoldby.
This freak weather arrived during a part of the golfing season when one
would expect dry, breezy conditions with lots of run and when usually the
standard scratch rating for the course would be reducing. In fact on this
occasion the CSS went out to 75 and became non-counting with just one
eligible player making the standard.
The wetness of the course, which even with the obligatory ‘lift and place’
local rule in force, made it extremely long, was exacerbated when a final
downpour left the last groups out unable to complete eighteen holes. Enough
of the field had already finished the course however to have the competition
declared completed and the Stableford scores considered. But due to the
non-counting result no player’s handicap would be increased after the round.

Walter O’Keefe.
When the field did finally get off the
round went pretty smoothly, thanks to the good work of the Greenwood staff,
and everybody would have finished save for the weather having a final say in
the day’s proceedings.
Even though he did not complete the full eighteen, Martin Grimoldby is in
such good form that his five over handicap return was good enough to win,
albeit with a count back. With three holes still to play it looked like his
handicap was due to be reduced once again but he now may have to wait for
the better weather to return before that may be possible.
Mark Lang was the unlucky one to lose out in the count back with a score of
13 to 17 as he also finished early but was happy enough to be travelling on
a short trip away with another second place under his belt. Rainer Helling
was as surprised as any to find that his score was sufficient to claim third
spot on a day when scoring was at a premium.
The second division was led in by street and a half by Walter O’Keefe who
profited by being able to complete the eighteen holes, as did those players
in second and third places, but most of the rest of the second division
found the conditions just too difficult to handle with many unable to get
into the 20’s.

Saara Halko.
It was Heikki Vanninen who won the count
back for second place with a better 9 on the last six after he had tied with
third place winner, Pekka Hyrkka, with 12.
The Red Division was won by a very regular suspect, Kiti Ulvio-Peltonen, as
she handled the conditions far better than the other ladies who generally
found the course just a little too taxing, except for Saara Halko who took
second place three behind.
With some of the par threes playing more like par fours it was not
surprising that there were no 2’s on the day.
Prior to the presentations there was welcome back for Terry Hodgkiss and
Seija Lammi and farewells for Kenny Priddy, Mark Lang and Steve Bickle.
Wednesday found the entire group from the Haven playing in the PGS Charity
Scramble out of the Rabbi’s Elephant with very mixed results, a report of
which can be found on this page.
Friday, Feb. 1, Khao Kheow A & C (yellow tees) -
Stableford
CSS 75 NC
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Harri Ingman (15) 33pts
2nd Mike Dabanovich (12) 32pts
3rd Phil Groves (7) 31pts
4th Jon Batty (8) 31pts
Division 2 (16+)
1st Walter O’Keefe (18) 32pts
2nd Paul Taylor (19) 32pts
3rd Terry Hodgkiss (23) 28pts
4th Bill Hurd (20) 27pts
Red Division
1st Saara Halko (19) 29pts
2nd Kiti Ulvio-Peltonen 24pts
Once again the groups from Soi 13 numbered twelve and even with that many
players for the second time in the week, the competition’s CSS went out to
75 and became non-counting for handicap upward review. This time no players
at all made the standard of “within two of handicap”, but nobody went down
either.
Although the round was uninterrupted by rain the conditions were almost the
same as had been faced during the previous outing at Greenwood, with zero
run on the fairways, rough that was almost impossible to play out of except
with a very lofted club and added to all those problems the greens were a
lot slower than usual. But even so, the course was in otherwise very good
condition, as is expected and is the norm at this time of year.
Once again three divisions but with the cut this time coming at the more
standard 15 for the first division which was won with a very low score for
eighteen holes considering the number of single handicap players in the
field.
Harri Ingman took top honours in the first division with a three over return
that just beat off the challenge of Mike Dabanovich who was left ruing the
missed opportunities on the last two greens that if taken would have meant
his first win for some time. Phil Groves returned to the podium thanks to a
win in a count back with Jon Batty, which he took with a better 17 to 13 as
he finished strongly on the back nine while Jon suffered a reversal of
fortune, having gone out with a very creditable level handicap opening nine
and then having to settle for fourth place.
The second division was won again by Walter O’Keefe, but this time out he
had to also win a count back over Paul Taylor, which he did, with a better
18 to 17, with Terry Hodgkiss in third four shots adrift and Bill Hurd in
fourth another one back.
The Ladies division saw a reversal of the top two from Monday’s competition
with Saara Halko coming out on top this time as Kiti Ulvio-Peltonen was
unable to repeat her earlier return and had to be satisfied with second
place. This made it Saara’s first win from The Haven, which made up for the
less than her desired score on the day.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division leaving a triple still to be
won in the first division and a huge quadruple in the second division.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Experience counts at PGS Annual Charity Scramble
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Eastern Star hosted the thirteenth Pattaya Golf Society Annual Scramble
on Wednesday, 30th January, and sixteen teams were in attendance to battle
for the honours on the rain softened course in humid conditions. For the
third year the event had a strong charity accent with the Fr. Ray Foundation
Outreach Center on Soi Thepprasit set to benefit again from the generosity
of Pattaya’s golfers.
From the start the soft fairways gave very little run and scoring would be
high for all except the long hitting teams in the field. Indeed there were
only twenty-one birdies recorded in the whole competition.
In third place was the team composed of Swiss golfers Rudi Eggimann, Bruno
Meletta, with French input from Jean-Philippe Baudot and Christine Gaillard,
putting together a round of net 63.7. In second place were Larry Slattery’s
“mob” with Martin Hennessy, Chris Walsh and Alan Flynn all contributing well
to their 61.6 total. Zero-point-one of a shot ahead were the winners, an
experienced mix of scramblers and ESR members led by Mikael Andersson with
Ted Gardner, Sasitorn Srithong and Tony Oakes all contributing well to the
round which totalled 61.5 shots.
Tony Oakes had picked up two birdie ‘2’s on the back nine par threes and
joined Timo Tarvainen and Alan Hanlon as technical winners. The notorious
Booby Bevy went to the team of “Rabbi”, Leigh Abbey, Dave Plaiter and Bryan
Barrell but no-one enjoyed the day more than these journeymen golfers.
Various prizes and sponsorships had earlier been donated by Jack Robertson,
Ken Grimes, Olivier Tahoun, Dave Cadwallader, Masashi Iizumi, Neil McIntosh,
Mike Earley, Stephen Rowley, Gerald Meredith and Rick Schramm and warm
hearts at the presentation saw more donations from some of the winning teams
and most of those present making the total raised 45,000 baht for the PGS
“Brick in the Wall” campaign set to start building a security wall around
the Foundation development on Soi Thepprasit. The campaign will run
throughout the year with a charity fun golf day organised for the last week
every month with the Soi Buakhao based group.
The quality of the day was there for all to see with good golfers doing
their best to overcome tough conditions and the welcome back at the Elephant
Bar for the presentation buffet was outstanding as Khun Peung, Rabbi and the
rest of the staff really pulled out all the stops to make the day a success.
The PGS is very grateful to all the golfers who participated and hopes their
support will motivate them to even higher targets as the year progresses.
Thanks to all for a wonderfully special day.
A touch of Mah-gic at Crystal Bay
On Friday, 1st February the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Crystal Bay to
play a stableford competition on the A and B nines, in two flights divided
at 16 and under. The conditions were good but the recent unseasonable stormy
weather had softened the fairways, restricting run from distance shots. The
greens were well presented.
The only downside was the lack of caddies for the pre-booked event and
getting started was a pedestrian affair. The imposed minimum wage is
starting to take affect one thinks.
The day itself saw a tense first flight with Martin Grimoldby and Alan
Pilkington sharing second place on 35 points whilst Larry Slattery’s 38
points was his best effort for a while, winning the flight with something to
spare.
In the second flight Alan Flynn recorded 38 points for third place, one
behind guest Niall Caven’s second placed score. The winner was Henry Mah,
consistent as ever, with forty points.
Dave Lehane scored the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on B6, while Michael
McGuigan took the Booby Bevy for his lowest score and Mr Len enjoyed Rabbi’s
free beer draw as his name was drawn from the non-winners pile.
It was a decent end to a day when his stress levels were tested by the lack
of caddies and very slow progress at Crystal Bay.

Oakes takes monthly mug by one shot
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Peter Grey (right) presents
the Growling Swan Monthly Mug to PSC President Tony Oakes.
Peter Blackburn &
Mike Gosden
Monday, Jan. 28, Century Chonburi - Stableford
It started to rain while I was in the shower at 6.30 a.m. and
continued quite steadily for the next hour. The expected phone calls started
coming, asking “are we still going?” After once more explaining the
inconsistencies of Thailand weather and the deal that we Pattaya Golfers
have with the “Rain Gods”, all 19 golfers turned up at The Growling Swan in
readiness for the longish trip to Century Chonburi Golf Course.
We were very happy to welcome for the first time Patrick Engels, Christian
Peters & Karl Vanmaele from Belgium and sadly said farewell to Ian Masterson
who is returning to The Emerald Isle for about one year. I also informed the
“troops” that it was my last game for a couple of weeks as I was heading off
to Perth, Australia in a couple of days leaving Michael Gosden & Martin Todd
to “take care of business”.
We departed the GS right on time at 8.30 a.m. and headed off in the rain,
which at times was quite heavy, but after putting my hand over Kev Waycott’s
mouth who continued to mutter “this doesn’t look good”, we arrived at the
course after the 68 minute drive.
Indeed, it didn’t look good as the rain was still falling and there were a
dozen or so other golfers there who were hanging back, not paying their
green fees until it was determined whether play would be possible or not. We
did the same and our patience was rewarded as Toddy & I had a chat while the
rain was abating and it was decided that we were here to play golf and that
was what we were going to do.
In light drizzle our first group, a three-ball, teed off 25 minutes late at
10.25 a.m. and whilst damp, the course was found to be perfectly playable
although the greens were naturally slower with the light rain falling. The
drizzle continued until the half way mark when it stopped altogether and our
first nine had taken just over two hours.
The golf course was looking quite good but needing a fair bit of TLC to
bring it up to scratch, but as regards “value for money” we always enjoy
coming here as it is a very good layout with some testing golf holes.

Monday winners: Ed Stewart,
Bernie McCart & Mike Gosden.
The weather stayed fine but overcast until we were 3
holes from the end when the drizzle started again but we managed to stay
quite dry & completed the full round in four hours & seven minutes. Once
more our perseverance had paid off as we love our golf and we were rewarded
accordingly.
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for 18 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The A Grade winner was the consistent Mike “Hunter” Gosden who had a
creditable 34 points, just 1 point ahead of 2 handicapper Christian Peters
in second spot. There were 3 players on 32 points vying for third & fourth
places with Patrick Engels (17 point back nine) getting third spot and
Martin Todd (16 point back nine) finishing fourth. The one to miss out was
yours truly, Peter Blackburn (15 point back nine).
With two golfers on 34 points a count back was needed to determine the
winner in B Grade and it was Ed “Willie Nelson” Stewart (19 point back nine)
who got the chocolates from Roy “Plums” Dayton (16 point back nine) in
second place. Another count back was required to decide third & fourth and
it was Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper (16 point back nine) who edged Ian
Masterson (14 point back nine) into fourth spot.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Mike Gosden (12) 34pts
2nd Christian Peters (2) 33pts
3rd Patrick Engels (11) 32pts
4th Martin Todd (8) 32pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Ed Stewart (18) 34pts
2nd Roy Dayton (22) 34pts
3rd Sandy Leiper (34) 30pts
4th Ian Masterson (35) 30pts
Near Pins: 4th – Martin Todd, 7th – Ed Stewart, 13th – Bjarne Kjaer,
17th – Kevin Waycott
Long Putts: 9th – Max Bracegirdle, 18th – Christian Peters
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by good
old Bernie McCart who excepted the award in fine style and wore the NAGA cap
for a considerable time at the bar afterwards like the good sport that he
is.
In the absence of big Ken Bernek it was Toddy who paraded Deefa the Dog and
many donations were collected for the needy in Pattaya from our ever
generous Growling Swan Crew.
It was then back to the Growling Swan where we reflected on the day’s golf
and celebrated that we had been able to play when at least one other golf
outlet had called their game off after arriving at the course where they
were scheduled to play. We love our golf and take the game seriously whilst
having plenty of fun.
Thursday, Jan. 31, Eastern Star Monthly Mug - Stroke
Thirty-four starters were in attendance at Eastern Star on Thursday in
anticipation of another day’s enjoyment. Teeing off the yellow markers under
cloudy skies, the starter sent us on our way at 0950 hours and the first
group completed the journey in four hours and thirty five minutes.
In racing parlance the course was heavy going and post game comments
included Richard Kubicki’s “the last time I had that much mud on my ball was
twenty years ago playing rugby.”
Wearing a very snappy new pair of long trousers our resident Beau Brummell,
Bjarne Kjaer, looked the picture of sartorial elegance. Apparently the
tailor asked, “Does sir dress to the left or the right?” Bjarne replied,
“Leave them baggy to the knees.”
We welcomed Brad Todd from Perth Western Australia, Pierre Dardenne from
France, Mick O’Connor and PSC big kahuna Tony Oakes.
In the A grade Bjarne Kjaer handed in a net seventy-three to take first
place ahead of Ebrahim with net seventy-four in second whilst Richard
Kubicki and Peter Bye each with seventy five finished third and fourth
respectively. Filling out the podium were Glen Henrikson and Brad Todd, both
having seventy-six net.
In the B grade Max Bracegirdle recorded a net seventy-six to take first
place and despite staggering down the stretch Kae had the same score for
second spot. Fred Dineley with seventy-eight, Sandy Leiper seventy-nine and
Roy Dayton with eighty-one completed the grade.
The Calloway grade was won by Russell Calcutt with a net seventy-five.
Finally, the winner of the monthly mug was Tony Oakes with a solid round of
net seventy-two.

Near Pins: 3rd Rita Zoebelli, 6th Brad Todd, 13th Rita Zoebelli, 17th

Long Putts: 9th Mike Gosden, 18th Peter Bye
The NAGA was comfortably won by Andrew Allen who in cricketing terminology
kissed the helmet half way down the thirteenth. He commented that letting
him loose on a golf course was like pouring Moet into a sleepy lagoon. It
was reported that on the tenth he had an unlucky fifteen. I’ve never seen a
lucky fifteen.
Once again Deefa the dog was on the prowl and the generous Growling Swan
souls emptied their pockets with donations for the needy children of
Pattaya. Their efforts are applauded.
Many thanks to Growling Swan mine host Peter Grey for his continued support
in sponsoring the Monthly mug and providing the chicken supper after
presentations which is much appreciated.
Drutnote: If you think the weather isn’t important, it will dictate how many
people attend your funeral.
Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 a.m. with transport departing at 8.30 a.m. For bookings
or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to

Ajit and Barry hit the forty’s
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday’s winner Ajit Amin
(right) with Colin Davies.
Sunday, Jan. 27, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Newell (8) 38pts
2nd Connie Walsh (11) 35pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (10) 35pts
B Flight
1st Ajit Amin (17) 41pts
2nd Colin Davis (18) 37pts
3rd Lee Adelly (16) 36pts
C Flight
1st John Bassett (21) 35pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (19) 33pts
3rd Jan Johansson (22) 33pts

Barry Copestake.
Near Pins: No 4 Jim Bell, No 9 John Nalty, No 12
Yui Bietry, No 16 Dirk Fleenor.
The day started out with light rain and was overcast and stayed pretty much
that way all day. This however did not dampen Alit Amin, who hails from
London and plays his golf at the Seve Ballesteros designed golf course the
Shire’s London. Ajit was not the biggest guy in the field by any stretch of
the imagination but he was certainly the best this Sunday with a creditable
41 points in B flight. The nearest player to Ajit was Colin ‘the Donkey’
whose 37 points was one better than Lee ‘the caddy to the stars’ Adelly.
In the premier flight it was Bob ‘Broad more’ Newell back to his best with a
rock solid 38 points and a new moniker given to him by his caddy - ‘Young
boy man’ - honestly. Bob was three clear of Irishman Connie Walsh and Ed
‘Our man in the White House’ Wyckoff with the luck of the Irish prevailing.
In C Flight, John Bassett showed he was no one trick pony as he trotted off
with the flight’s honours. Peter ‘the diver’ Henshaw needed to avoid the
water and the help of a count back to separate himself from Jan Johnson.
Yui Bietry, Ed Wyckoff, John Nalty, Eddy Delaney and Vic Hester shared the
‘2’s pot.
Monday, jan. 28, Royal Lakeside - Stableford
1st Paraic McManus (7) 36pts
2nd Mark Watson (6) 35pts
3rd Gerry Roche (18) 33pts
Monday started the same way Sunday did, raining and overcast, as the gang
made their way up the Highway 7 all hoping that the weather might abate as
they reached their destination - Royal Lakeside. In fact it was probably
worse after waiting half an hour and with no let up insight a good
proportion of the field gave it up.
Of the remaining battle hardened all-weather players it was Paraic McManus
who top scored with a steady even par round for the day’s honours, closely
followed by the steady play of Mark Watson, who was one stroke adrift. Gerry
Roche, Terry ‘pork chop Mangan and Sunday’s top dog Ajit Amin went to
three-way count back for the last podium place and it was Terry and Ajit who
were left up the creek without a paddle.
Mark Watson, Jim Elphick and JP Maffray shared the watered down ‘2’s pot.
Wednesday, Jan. 30. Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tom McManus (11) 36pts
2nd J P Maffray (13) 35pts
3rd Pat Duane (10) 34pts
4th Pen Caruthers (14) 33pts
B Flight
1st Walter Beachli (18) 35pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (19) 34pts
3rd Bobby Collis (20) 32pts
4th Tore Eliassen (16) 32pts
C Flight
1st John O’Neil (21) 38pts
2nd Fergus O’Brien (21) 31pts
3rd Sean Soden (21) 27pts
4th Jim Procter (22) 26pts
Slightly better weather greeted the gang as they set out to battle the
lightning fast greens and monkeys at Bangpra. Irishman Tom McManus did it
best as his 38 points topped C Flight and the day’s scores. He was also the
only player on the day to better his handicap.
Tom was seven clear of that esteemed Thai linguist Fergus O’Brien while Sean
Soden was extremely surprised that his 27 points was good for the bronze,
but not as much as Jim Procter when he found that his 26 point count back
over the unlucky Jeff Dune rounded out the flight.
Top man in the flagship flight was Tom McManus with a steady even par round.
Tom was followed in one stroke increments by JP Maffray, Pat Duane and Pen
Caruthers in that order, but Pen did need the help of a count back decision
over Graham Dorward.
B Flight threw up a pleasant surprise as Walter ‘take me up the Alter’
Beachli stood atop the podium with a flight winning 35 points. Peter ‘Don
Corleone’ Henshaw took the second spot a shot adrift while Bobby Collis,
Tore Eliassen and Terry Wagner went to a count back to sort out the minor
flight steps. Sadly Terry stood at sea level and satang less.
JP Maffray, Steve Doris, Barry Power and John O’Neil Divided the ‘2’s pot.
Friday, Feb. 1,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Duane (10) 37pts
2nd Connie Walsh (11) 36pts
3rd JP Maffray (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Barry Copestake (16) 42pts
2nd Jim Bell (15) 37pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (16) 36pts
C Flight
1st David Dunne (19) 35pts
2nd Gerry Roche (19) 33pts
3rd John O’Neil (21) 33pts
Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake’s scorecard looked like he had played another,
and nearer set of tees (like the Reds), from the balance of the field as he
romped home by five points! Jim ‘AK47’ Bell was so far back in B Flight
second place it looked like Barry had crossed the finishing line before Jim
had started. Nick Odnoral, always there or there abouts, closed the flight
with a fine even par round.
In the senior circuit Pat Duane held sway on 37 points as he bettered
Wednesday’s second place finish. Pat was followed up the podium steps by
good friends Connie Walsh and JP Maffray; the order of whose ascent was
determined by count back.
David Dune took the top spot in C Flight on 35 points - this was two clear
of Gerry Roche who squeezed out a count back win over John O’Neil. John took
defeat with a grin as this was his second pay window visit this week.
Dave Shelton and Jim Bell (a pair) along with five other players shared the
‘2’s pot.

Maiko on the march at Treasure Hill
PSC golf from Café Kronborg

(Left to right) Don
Richardson, Dave Richardson and Graham Buckingham.
Monday, Jan. 28, Treasure Hill –
Stableford
Treasure Hill was the game today but it sure looked like back
in October in the rainy season. 1 hour up the 331 with rain sometimes
heavy and when we got to the course it was still coming down at a good
clip. Finally it eased up and we teed-off 40 minutes late under misty
conditions. The course was in fine condition though wet but draining so
no plugged balls anywhere.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 4 hours and 30 minutes welcomes
went out to Monte Sykes and Ty Anderson from Cheasapeake Virginia, USA.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 18 and the full lineup of
pins. Doug Maiko won the A Flight with a fine 39 points ahead of Monte
Sykes in second on 34 points, with Tore Eliassen and Leif Kirkgaard
finishing third and fourth respectively.

Thursday, Jan. 31, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
We were off to Mountain Shadow with some spots of heavy rain
en-route. A quick check-in and we were off the first tee 15 minutes
early under surprisingly partly sunny and dry conditions. The course
showed no signs of any rain this week and was in a fine condition, but
as we went down the 14th the heavens opened up.
It must be noted that a lot of white tees were back on the blues, making
for not so good scores when combined with the rain that started halfway
around. The first group finished in just 4 hours but were looking like
drowned rats at the end.
A goodbye went out to Michelle Sancillo, back to his restaurant in
Spain.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19, plus a full bevy of pins.
Don Richardson won the A Flight with the best score of the day 37
points. Monte Sykes was second again with 34 while Koji Yamada and Daryl
Evans struggled through to pick up the minor places.
Graham Buckingham topped B Flight standings with 33 points while Susanne
Gaarde came second on a count back from Jesper Rasmussen, both with 28
points. Elias Magnusson finished fourth with 27.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Don Richardson (11) 37pts
2nd Monte Sykes (8) 34pts
3rd Koji Yamada (12) 26pts

Robertson wins monthly award
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook (right)
presents the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month award to Jack Robertson.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Jan. 29, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
Not really a course that we play on a Tuesday, normally a
Friday, however we booked it and found we were full up with 8 groups.
Bert’s in the morning was packed and trying to get them to leave was
something of a trial.
Still, soon down the road we were there a bit early so were able to take
our time. A quick book-in here and the changing rooms are not too bad,
mind it is a good day when you can get hot water. So out to the first
tee and we were able to get off on time.
It was a bit windy so we decided to play off the white tees as both blue
and white were together, in fact as it happened on all the tees the blue
and white were together except one. Still, I am told most were really
white. Wow!

Friday’s top four with one
of Bert’s finest.
The course was not in bad nick, the fairways were
reasonable and the greens these days seem to have settled down and are
nearly playable. However this will never be an easy course and so it
proved on this day, get in trouble and you stay there.
Soon around it was time to check and see if I could find a hot shower,
and lo and behold after a look around I found one. One side had cold
showers and the other warm. Lucky Farang. So into the restaurant where
the food is quite reasonable and well priced.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and in the A Flight, 0
to 19, the winner was Mark West with 38 points ahead of Tony Berry in
second with 37 points. Taking third spot was the scribe was Derek Brook
with 36 points and in fourth was Bob Watson with 35.
In the B Flight the winner was Jack Robertson with 34 points ahead of a
count back on 31 points that saw John Hadden in second and Torsten
Bischoff in third. In fourth we had Graham Buckingham with 29 points.
This being the MBMG Group Golfer of the Month, the points were totaled
and we found with his first place in the B Flight, the winner was Jack
Robertson. This is Jack’s first monthly win, so well done!
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Bob Watson, Walter Baechli
Long Putt: Barry Elphick
Friday, Feb. 1,Crystal Bay – Stableford
Wow, playing Crystal Bay on a Friday, what next? On arriving
at Bert’s the place was packed and it seemed like our biggest turnout of
the year on a Friday. So as we had a couple of groups too many it seemed
sensible to get down there early and hope to get away as soon as we
could. The cavalcade soon departed, however they were stymied as the
traffic was at a standstill on Pattaya Nua approaching Sukhumwit.
Finally underway we then made good time and were soon booking in, and
rushed out to the first tee. Just about making it on time we were told
we would play the A & B Nines. So away we went into a strong wind. It
always seems windy here but the course is very open in many respects so
a wayward tee shot can many time be rescued. Still this is a course that
very few will tell you they do not like playing. On this day it was not
in prime condition, but was good enough to have a fine day out.
Round over it was a quick shower and back to Bert’s for the results and
it was a sign of the times that the A Flight performed better than the B
Flight. In the A Flight, 0 to 17, the winner was Landis Brooks with 39
points ahead of a count back for second on 38 points that saw Bob Watson
in second and Alan Sullivan in third. We then had a count back for
fourth on 36 points that saw Max Scott in fourth and Brian Parish just
losing out.
In the B Flight the winner was Henry Wong with 35 points ahead of Barry
Elphick with 32 and Daryl Evans with 30 points in third. We had a count
back for fourth on 29 points that saw Don Carmody in fourth and Mick
Coghlan just missing out. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Dick Warberg, Landis Brooks (2), Rodney Beckett, John
Marrit, Henry Wong, Daryl Evans, Don Carmody.

Climb any mountain
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday’s top two, Clive Hoseason & Brian Maddox.
Tuesday, Jan. 29, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
First to Tuesday, when we went to the flatter of the two
mountains we contended with this week - Mountain Shadow - which
offers its own unique set of challenges. Today was definitely a day
when the course was the winner, with 33 points the best score,
albeit 3 of them. Leading the way with a back 9 score of 18 was
Clive Hoseason (23), while Brian Maddox (22) with 13 & Martin Hayes
(12) with 12 picked up the minor placings.
Near pins were shared between Jeff & George.
Thursday, Jan. 31, Wangjuntr - Stableford
Thursday was a longer drive to tackle the Wangjuntr
Highland course. This course is one where it will be something
different to every player, so my best recommendation would be,
rather than listen to anyone’s criticisms or praise, go play it
yourself and make up your own mind.
The weather was not all that kind to us today, with rain for nearly
2 hours making good golf even more difficult. Best score went to
Jeff Wylie (6) with 31 points while Bob Edwards (8) was a solitary
point behind in second spot.
Near pins were picked up by Bob, Rob & Jeff with 2.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday,
with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC
affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors
who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for
scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Watson walks off with low gross honours
(PAGS) Pattaya Amateur Golf Series

PAGS golfers on the tee at
Greenwood.
The first event of the 2013 Pattaya Amateur Golf Series was held at
Greenwood Golf Course on the 30th January. 98 players turned up, which would
have been lots more but 15 players failed to show. Unfortunately this is
pretty standard practice for golfers in Pattaya but it didn’t spoil what
turned out to be a great day.
B
Flight winner Andy Robinson,
There were a few changes to the series this year where we see the men joined
by the ladies playing from the white tees with adjusted handicaps based on
course and slope rating. Overall the ladies struggled to cope with the extra
length but one lady, Yuza, didn’t and managed a third place finish in C
Flight with 37 points.
This year also sees the introduction of a low gross which was won by Bob
Watson who shot a gross 77.
After the tournament everybody congregated back at Shenanigans in Jomtien
for a BBQ and the prize presentation. We gave away a total of 36 prizes and
followed that with a 10 lucky draw prizes for all those who didn’t win on
the golf course.

Phillips & Flello have
a field day
Jomtien Golf
with the IPGC
Wednesday, Jan. 30, Phoenix - Stableford
After Monday’s game at Emerald was cancelled due to the rain, we moved
onto Phoenix today and the weather looked OK’ish as we arrived. There were a
few spots of rain on the back nine but for the most part it was a fine day
for golf.

Andy Baber.
There were ten groups out in three flights with the cut at 9-15, 16-21 and
22+, and a ladies division as well.
In the men’s divisions there were two 41 point scores winning the first and
second divisions and a 38-pointer in division 1 today that did not even make
the podium; he wasn’t a happy chappy.
Division 1
1st Lindsay Phillips 41pts
2nd Mike Chatt 40pts
3rd Chris Voller 39pts
Division 2
1st Randy Flello 41pts
2nd Andy Oz 35pts
3rd Chris Slota 35pts
Division 3
1st Terry Redding 36pts
2nd Gordon Everingham 35pts
3rd Knuit 34pts
Ladies
1st Miss Nut 37pts

Gamble, Don Head, Chris Slota, Miss Nut
In the ‘2’s today Miss Nut birdied the Ocean 5th to scoop the ladies’ pot
while in Division 1 there were 4, with Sid Crawley (2), Ian Speirs and Chris
Voller sharing no rollovers and in Division 2, with 2 previous rollovers,
Randy Flello, Don Head and Neil Gamble split the purse.
It was bon voyage to Terry Redding today, back to his beloved Aire, the
Chaing Mai caddy. See you in Hua Hin in May!

Randy Flello.
Friday, Feb. 1,Eastern Star - Stableford
Preparing for the following week’s pairs multiplier extravaganza, Wilf
Latham’s 37 points topped Division 1 today, with Mikael Andersson second on
34 and Chris Voller beat Bill Bertram on a 17/16 back nine count back for
third after they both came in with 29 points.
Miss Chevrolet’s other half, Andy Baber, won the second division with 34
points ahead of Joe Kubon in second on 32 and in third place was Walter
Weber with 31.
In her last game with us before returning to Switzerland, Verana Suhr
claimed the ladies division with 27 points. Bon voyage to both Verana and
Volker Suhr!
Near pins went to Wilf Latham, Jan Sordal, Horst Starchl (2), Roar Berger,
Rudi Schaefer, and Verana Suhr.
There are now three rollovers in the ‘2’s in Division 1 to the extravaganza
day on Friday, Feb. 8 and two in division 2, so all to play for next week!
The telephone box boy (no names mentioned, Dennis S.) has found a new
society to play with on Saturday mornings - the swingers.

Holmes wins by a street
The Billabong Bar Golf Society
Wednesday, Jan. 30, Green Valley -
Stableford
Our usual Wednesday venue today Green Valley is in such
fantastic condition it is a pleasure to play. A 4 hour round at this time of
the year is also great!

Bill Marsden with John Ryves
and Richard Holmes.
With 7 groups playing and we got away a little early and it was all go from
there, with Marshall John keeping the field on the move. Greig also gave a
2-ball a bit of hurry up and then couldn’t keep up - well done mate!
Richard Holmes had the best day out today, scoring 42 points and taking the
winner’s cheque ahead of Kiwi Bill a little way back on 36. Then there was a
3-way count back on 35 points with Martin Kingswood getting third, Bob
Finley fourth and Barry Copestake fifth.
Everyone had a good day out including Lloyd, just back from his latest jaunt
of 5 months without holding a club and scoring 33 points. A black sky with
the rain not far away came in as the groups finished their rounds but nobody
got wet.
It was Capt. Bob’s birthday today so there were a few beers and a bell ring
back at the bar.
Friday, Feb. 1, The Emerald - Stabelford
Emerald was the venue for Friday’s game this week and with five groups
playing we got away on time. There was no rain and the course was in
magnificent condition as usual.
Today we welcomed Gary Ritchie, Ivor Smith (a friend of John Locke), and
Mark Prytz.
There were no ‘2’s again so all the prizes went to field down to 5th place.
The scores weren’t terribly good apart from the two top places. Gary Ritchie
was the winner today with 38 points followed by Brian Maddox on 35 and there
were 3 players tied on 33, Lloyd Shuttleworth, Mark Prytz and Mitch Black.
Thank you to Kiwi Bill, Lloyd and Colonel Bob for looking after the lads as
the Capt was down with the flu.

Morris on the mark at Greenwood
IPGC golf from Tara Court Golf Group
Sunday, Jan. 27, Mt. Shadow -
Stableford
Back at our usual Mountain Shadow today and after a slight delay while they
sorted out caddies we got off around 10 mins after our allotted tee time.
There seems to be a shortage of caddies in a lot of the courses this year.

Sunday’s winner -
John Fetherston.
Everything went smoothly and we got around in just a little over 4hrs, which
is very good. While it looked like it was going to rain a few times
thankfully it stayed away and we got around dry.
Once again only one player managed to beat his handicap on this difficult
course and that was John Fetherston who had a very good 38pts off his 11
handicap. We had 3 players on 33pts with Terry Kelly coming second on count
back from Teddy Lodge third and Phelim Moran fourth. Jack Behan came in
fifth with 32pts.
Terry Kelly had the only ‘2’ of the day and scooped the pot so he had a good
pay day!
1st John Fetherston (11) 38pts
2nd Terry Kelly (15) 33pts
3rd Teddy Lodge (9) 33pts
4th Phelim Moran (10) 33pts
5th Jack Behan (15) 33pts
‘2’s: Terry Kelly
Tuesday, Jan. 29, Greenwood – Stableford
Today we played at Greenwood and because of all
the rain on the previous day we decided to play off the yellow tees as we
expected the fairways to be wet and playing long. Also they told us carts
were being restricted to the paths as the course was too wet to allow them
on the fairways.
Actually when we got out on the course it was in excellent condition and had
dried out very well. We played A and B courses and Ted Morris came in with
an excellent 41pts to win by a clear margin. In second place on his first
visit with us was Ger Linehan with 38 and his friend and playing partner Pat
Culloty was third with 37. In fourth place with 36pts was Jack Behan, on his
last game with us before heading off to Australia to continue his holiday.
Jack beat Jack Fetherston on a count back.
Peter Murphy and Joe McArdle shared the 2’s pot
Back in O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant we said good bye to Brian Finn who is
going home this week.
1st Ted Morris (15) 41pts
2nd Ger Linehan (17) 38pts
3rd Pat Culloty (20) 37pts
4th Jack Behan (11) 36pts
5th John Featherston (11) 36pts
‘2’s: Peter Murphy, Joe McArdle.
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group plays every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday,
leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant in the Tara Court on Pratannak Rd around
10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s or ring George on 087 540 0844 and he
will book you in.

Thai Polo take victory in last-gasp thriller
The BMW- B.Grimm Thai Polo Open 2013

The victorious Thai Polo team
raise the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Cup after winning an exciting
final at the BMW- B.Grimm Thai Polo Open.
Captained astutely by tournament
co-organizer Harold Link, the locally based Thai Polo team held on for a
thrilling win in the final of the BMW- B.Grimm Thai Polo Open 2013 held at
the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club in Pattaya on Saturday, Jan. 19.
A star-studded line up of dignitaries, socialites and celebrities arrived
for the annual event and could be spotted among the many spectators.
Included in the VIP guest list were HRH Crown Prince Abdullah ibni Sultan
Ahmad Shah of Pahang, Malaysia; H.E. Ana Maria Ramirez, Argentine Ambassador
to Thailand; H.E. Rolf Schulze, the German Ambassador to Thailand; and H.E.
Robina P. Marks, the South African Ambassador to Thailand. The event was
presided over by H.E. Air Chief Marshal Kamthon Sindhvananda, Privy
Councillor.
Along with the polo matches there were also plenty of activities to keep
guests entertained throughout the day, especially the young ones who could
swing around having fun in the Tree Top Adventure or take one of the
complimentary pony rides.
For the more sedate amongst the crowd, a sumptuous buffet lunch followed by
high tea was served in the huge open-air marquee and there was a chance to
view BMW’s latest luxury automobiles on show or do some shopping in the many
stalls selling chic branded clothing and accessories. Other meanwhile
preferred to simply sit back, chill out and enjoyed the music of jazz
saxophonist Aht Gunlayanakupt.

Thai Polo and AXUS fight for
possession of the ball during the first half of the match.
This yearly social gathering is also
always a great excuse for spectators to don their ‘Sunday Best’ and turn the
event into almost as much a fashion parade as it is a sporting contest. As
in past years, an award was given for the ‘best hat’ seen on display, which
this time was won by the stylishly adorned Marisa Chew.
In the polo itself, the Ranhill team defeated Royal Pahang 9–8 in a free
scoring playoff match to take third place overall. Pahang were trailing by
as many as five goals at one point but they slowly clawed their way back
into the game and with two goals in the last minute by Tengku Amir they
almost completed a remarkable recovery, but they just ran out of time.

The clock ticks down on the
scoreboard as Thai Polo hold a narrow lead in the final chukka.
The final match between Thai Polo and the
AXUS team was preceded by the traditional and eye-catching parade of the BMW
cars, polo players and horses, led as always by Nunthinee Tanner, co-owner
of the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club.
Everything was set for the final match, with Thai Polo looking to go one
place better than last year’s runner-up spot. And it all looked to be
heading their way as they took a 4-2 lead into the half-time break, but
disaster struck for Thai Polo when Carloline Link fell heavily in the third
chukka and had to be taken to hospital with a suspected broken forearm.
Caroline’s replacement, Juan Martin Gallago had a higher handicap than her,
which meant that Thai Polo had to give their opponents ½ a goal advantage.

Stopping the divots is
tradition at any polo match.
The home team still led 7-5½ going into
the final chukka but some good play by Musso and Etcheverry for AXUS led to
another score and saw them reduce the deficit to just ½ a goal with the
clock rapidly ticking down to full time.
In the dying seconds, Thai Polo conceded a 60-yard safety after knocking the
ball behind their own goal line and all the disappointment of last year’s
final defeat suddenly returned to haunt the Thai Polo squad as AXUS prepared
to take a free shot at goal.
Dario Musso had been the regular penalty taker for AXUS but for some reason
this time he deferred to Etcheverry, who had the agony of seeing his
game-clinching effort just slide the wrong side of the posts.
For the Thai Polo team and supporters the celebrations could begin in
earnest, although these were somewhat muted, with many thoughts going to
their injured teammate Caroline in hospital.
The trophy presentations took place in front of the clubhouse and winning
skipper Harold Link lifted the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Cup just
as a spectacular firework display illuminated the evening sky.
The annual BMW- B.Grimm Thai Polo Open is held primarily as a charity fund
raiser and all the proceeds from this year’s event will go to the Chitralada
Vocational School under the patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri
Sirindhorn.

Browne & Goyons hold sway at anniversary tourney
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tournament winners pose for a
photo with The Relax Bar staff.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, Jan. 22 –Anniversary Tournament &
Party
We were celebrating both the New Year and the 4th
anniversary of the group, but organising these events is getting harder and
harder each year. Not only do you have to think of new ideas but Father Time
is catching up and the strain takes its toll. Nevertheless, this year’s
event from the first players out till the end of the night was a huge
success.
Because we had a full field of players and a couple more than expected, we
were concerned that all would not finish their game in daylight. However,
with the co-operation of the Phoenix marshals all completed their 18 holes
before dark.
The course was perfectly set up and it was Lake/Ocean course that was the
challenge. One has to say the fairways and greens are now in superb
condition and if anyone can work out the tricky greens then they are sure to
finish in the top places.
Back at the Relax Bar our hosts Dieter and Ung (along with all their staff)
created a perfect setting for the rest of the evening. The buffet was superb
and there was plenty of food to cover minimum seconds and even thirds if
required.

Tim Mason collected three
lucky draw prizes.
I have to thank all of the sponsors who
made the event even more successful and who provided the lucky draw prizes.
They were: KPK Food Services Ltd., Joe Miller, Paul Taylor, Tratoria
Italiana, Ann’s Salon, David Czernie, Il Primo Sole, Bob Neylon, Phoenix
Golf Club, Goort Gelten, Mrs. Mukesh Thakker, Granville Swanton, Pierre
Bietry & friends, The Relax Bar, and donations from our own group.
Before the awards ceremony we were treated to a superb cabaret from Elvis
(supported by Caroline Etherington).
Onto the tournament winners of the day: A Flight winner with 39 points was
Francis Goyons ahead of Stuart Gordon with 35 points in second on count back
over Hugh Byrne in third, and in fourth was Sergio Poggi with 34 points.
Each was awarded with a suitable trophy.
Patrick Browne came first in B Flight winners with 39 points, nudging Goort
Gelten into second place by way of count back, and third was Graham Ellis
with 38, one ahead of fourth placed John Bartley. These players were also
awarded suitable trophies.

Thiery
Petrement gets acquainted with Tina Turnoff (Graham Ellis).
Near pin prizes went to Wolfram Kruger, Mike Gerrard, Pierre Bietry, Ulf
Berggren, Sergio Volpi, Patrick Brown, Colin Gregg & Stephen Cooper Reade.
Each was given a sleeve of Taylor Made golf balls.
That all happened over two weeks ago and further to that we had our normal
end of the month Trattoria Italiana voucher and I will only report the
winner was Hugh Byrne with 38 points.
The high spot of this report is that on two holes Hugh recorded 5 (yes five)
points on each hole, making 10 out of the 38. On Mountain Hole 8 he managed
to hole his tee shot, with a shot allowance which gave him a net 0 for 5
points. Needless to say he also won the near pin prize for that hole.
He then went on to eagle Ocean 2 with a shot allowance which reduced to a
net 1 for 5 points. What a great day for him and the rest of the group when
he did the gentlemanly thing and bought everyone a drink. Congratulations
Hugh. This cost will be offset by the fact that he was awarded the 500 baht
Trattoria Italiana voucher for winning the day.
Finally I would like to thank all the players who attended and in particular
those that assisted me to make the day a huge success.
Although we are predominantly a members group we do welcome non members of
Phoenix as our guests and they enjoy the benefit of only having to pay 1,000
baht green fee during the high season. The only basic requirements to join
our group for golf are that you must have an official handicap of no more
than 28 and be male. Anyone interested please call me (Mike) on 087 091
7565. We play every Tuesday, Friday & Sunday at approx 11.30 am.

The Divorcer’ bags a skin full
The Backyard Golf Society
Randy & Don celebrate their golfing
success with the staff at Blue Sky Bar.
The French Canadian contingent were the big winners at
our weekly Emerald round on Friday. Three groups out and we managed to
get around in about 4hrs on what was a great day for golf.
The main stableford prize was won by Randy the French Canadian with 35
points, 1 ahead of Don ‘The Divorcer’, himself a lover of the Quebecois.
Both players claim not to be French but we ignore that minor
technicality to gee them up a bit.
Amazingly the first 13 holes of the skins competition were draws so ‘The
Divorcer’s’ birdie on the par 5, 14th enabled him to scoop a big pot
there too. The rollover from the previous week also went to ‘The
Divorcer’ and Tel won the 4 other skins available for the day.
To further boost his winnings, Don also picked up the near-pin prize on
the par 3, 15th hole.
Down the road for a few beers and both the Frenchies bought rounds with
their winnings, including several for the ladies in Blue Sky.
‘Second-hand’ Bob heads back to Old Blighty this week so we will miss
his rotund frame around the place for a few months. He did manage to
sign off his time here with an interesting shot on one hole where his
wayward attempt apparently knocked the top off one of the red stakes.
Enough said about that.
Dan ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’ has provided some information to the players
on golf insurance and judging from the age and condition of some of our
members it could come in handy at any time.
Army John (restored to #1 position in Blue Sky), our official groupie,
was joined by his Taffy mate after the game, so we have now named Taff
as associate groupie-in-training. He has a long way to go to reach Army
John lofty standards.

Kirilenko wins Pattaya Women’s Open crown
Russia’s Maria Kirilenko reacts after
winning the singles final at the 2013 PTT Pattaya Women’s Open.
Russia’s Maria Kirilenko bounced back from a set down to
defeat Germany’s Sabine Lisicki 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) in an enthralling
singles final at the 2013 PTT Pattaya Women’s Open on Sunday, Feb. 3 to
claim her first WTA Tour title in 5 years.
On finals day the stadium at the Dusit Thani Pattaya tennis center was
transformed into something more reminiscent of a Moscow or St.
Petersburg amphitheatre for a Davis Cup match, as a huge Russian
contingent arrived to give enthusiastic vocal support to the
tournament’s number 2 seed.
In a tense but high quality opening to the match both players fought
hard to gain an advantage, with Lisicki’s big serve and ground stokes
being countered by her opponent’s subtle all-court game. After swapping
a couple of early breaks the match settled down and went with serve
until with the score standing at 6-5 to Lisicki, Kirilenko was the first
to blink as she missed a forehand long on a critical point to hand the
first set to her younger opponent.

Maria Kirenko (center-right) and
Sabine Lisicki (center-left) parade their trophies with (L to R) Chatchawal
Supachayanont, General Manager Dusit Thani Pattaya; Pornthep Noprujikul,
former member of the Chonburi PAO; Sarakorn Kulatham, Executive Vice
President (International) of PTT PCL; Suwat Liptapanlop, President of the
Thai Lawn Tennis Association; Ittipol Khunpluem, Mayor of Pattaya City; and
Chana Pankaew, Event & Sponsorship Manager, Thai Beverage Marketing Co.,
Ltd.
The match really turned on its head however at the start
of the second set. After holding serve, Lisicki had three break points
in the next game to take what could have been a decisive 2-0 lead.
Instead, Kirilenko dug deep into her resources and eventually hung on to
hold serve and even up the scores.

Germany’s Sabine Lisicki fires a
backhand winner down the line.
All indications were that the second set would then follow a similar
pattern to the first, however Lisicki’s form began to desert her just
when she need it most and she promptly lost the next 8 games on the
bounce, offering little resistance as Kirilenko grew in confidence and
started to dictate the pattern of each point.
Staring defeat in the face at 5-2 down and 15-40 in the final set,
Lisicki suddenly threw caution to the wind and the match was to witness
yet another remarkable swing of momentum. Fending off three match
points, the German starlet held her own serve and then set about
breaking her opponent’s - not once but twice.
Kirilenko could barely believe what was happening as she saw her lead
evaporate and at 5-6 down suddenly she was the one needing to break
serve to stay in the match. Lisicki’s powerful serve had proved a potent
weapon in the deciding set as she sent down a succession of booming
aces, however, with a chance to serve out for the title the nerves
appeared to take over and the German’s service game began to misfire.
Kirilenko saw an opportunity and pounced to break back and take the
match into a tie-break.

The graceful Kirilenko serves to
Lisicki during the opening set.
Showing all the experience of her 10 years on the pro
tour, Kirilenko stormed into a 5-0 lead in the tie-breaker and this time
she wasn’t about to let her opponent off the hook. At 6-1 to the
Russian, Lisicki’s backhand flew just wide of the line and Kirilenko
sank to her knees, raising her arms in triumph. The match had lasted 2
hours and 37 minutes and had been a captivating spectacle throughout.
“I had a birthday just before the tournament started and had a cake in
my room with some candles, and I made a wish. The wish was to win this
tournament and I think it was good one because it came true,” Kirielko
told the crowd following the trophy presentation.
“I was a little disappointed in the third set,” she added. “I was
kicking myself for losing the 5-2 lead and then somehow I returned her
serves at 6-5 and it was a tiebreak and then I started to feel I can win
it again.”
The win was just the sixth title of Kirilenko’s career and her first
since beating Martinez-Sanchez in Barcelona in 2008. As well as picking
up the first prize of $40,000, Kirilenko also garnered 280 valuable
ranking points to go with the crown.
In the doubles final which followed immediately afterwards, Japanese
veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm and Australian Casey Dellacqua easily defeated
Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova and Russia’s Alexandra Panova 6-3, 6-2.

Gibbons hat-trick seals
City’s fate in local derby
Bangkok Casuals Football League 2012/13
Paul Frain
Pattaya City met local rivals F.C. Planet last weekend in a much
anticipated local derby match. Planet went into the game lying second in
the table but City were full of confidence after their fine win the
previous week and started out strongly, with two good runs by Vorontsov
on the left which brought two fine saves by the Planet keeper at the
foot of the post.
Planet replied with forward Gibbons shooting wide from a good position
but City still had the Planet goal under pressure at the other end,
however the chances went begging. Planet came back strongly but they too
missed easy chances and play was end to end with the game being played
at a very fast pace. In one of Planet’s attacks, City could not clear
their lines and paid the price when the ball fell to Gibbons who side
footed the ball home to make it 1-0.
From the restart both teams continued to miss bucket loads of chances as
the defenses creaked under pressure. Just before the break, Planet’s
keeper brought off a superb double save when City’s Dipta produced some
magic to beat three defenders and centered the ball straight into the
path of Jannson whose volley and subsequent follow-up were both
brilliantly saved to keep the score Planet 1 City 0 at half time.
At the start of the second period, Planet attacked the City defense and
scored their second goal within five minutes as the City defense stood
and watched while Ainscough side-footed the ball home following a good
passing move by Planet. City were not taking it lying down though and
attacked Planet’s goal in numbers and pulled a goal back through
Vorontson after a fine five-man move to make the score 2-1.
The second half was just like the first, fast and furious with chances
by both sides being missed, but slowly Planet took the advantage and
missed a glut of chances as City’s players began to tire. The City goal
came under siege and it was no surprise when Gibbons extended Planet’s
lead, scoring with a shot from just outside of the area, and it got
worse for City as Dumbia added a fourth soon after when he lobbed the
keeper from the half-way line.
Planet still had to be careful as dangerous breakaways by City kept the
keeper on his toes, but he proved equal to the task and soon after
Gibbons put the icing on his own personal cake to score his third and
his team’s fifth goal following good work by Ainscough.
The drama was not yet over however as Planet’s Paul Darbyshire was
pulled down in the area when there appeared to be no threat on the goal,
but the penalty was fired wide of the post to keep the score 5-1.
This was an exciting football match and with all the chances that both
teams had the score line could easily have been 10-10. City will need to
rebound quickly from the defeat as they are playing at Laem Chabang this
coming weekend at the earlier kick off time of 2-30p.m.

Sea Fishing Report
A happy angler with a 5kg trevally
catch.
Mike Gerrard
Ahoy me hearties!
At this time of the year the weather and sea conditions are
absolutely perfect for a great day on the ocean. Everyone who has been
out with us on our trips recently has stated so, even if the big fish
have eluded us. But never fear, if the biggies are not around we always
take home a huge catch of 1 to 2 kilo snapper or grouper, with some
great sized pladang around as well, all delicious eaters.
Our trips are scheduled at twice a month on the second and fourth
Saturday. This means that the next four trips are booked on the
following dates: Feb 9 & 23, Mar 9 & 23 and spaces are still available
on all dates.
We usually sail from Bangsaray at about 7.30 a.m., however one or two of
our regulars are suggesting going out at about 4.00 or 5.00 a.m. to try
and catch the ‘biggies’. Return time is no later than 5.30 to 6.00 p.m.
All bait is provided including live squid to entice the ‘biggies’.
Tackle is available if you do not have your own and some transport can
be arranged from Jomtien and Chaiyapreuk Road areas only. If you have
your own transport we meet at a spot near the harbour before going to
the boat.
The boat is 65 feet long with two decks (the upper deck has relaxers for
anyone who wishes to have a little nap). There is also a European style
bathroom and a kitchen for making coffee and frying a few fish if
desired.
Our dear sponsor Keith Keohane of KPK Food Services Ltd, donates a 500
baht voucher for each scheduled trip for the best fish caught.
Private charter of all the facilities is available if you wish to
organize your own day (any day). For more information please call me
(Mike) on 087 091 7565.
