Hundreds of Sattahip residents walked through town removing trash and scraping waterways for the city’s “Big Cleanup Day”.

Mayor Narong Bunbancherdsri joined representatives from private organizations, hundreds of navy sailors, police officers, health volunteers, teachers, students and residents in the Jan. 13 operation.

Municipal Secretary Rungroj Onwong said the event was organized to encourage residents and organizations to keep public areas clean. Volunteers started with collecting trash from Sattahip City Hall to the beach and along public roads and waterways. Recyclables were separated for reprocessing.

In addition to picking up rubbish, wild plants were removed from canals and lakes.

Narong said Sattahip has problems with maintaining public areas, especially tourist attractions that now look dull and have become tacky. The only way to resolve the problem is to work together, encouraging others to help keep the city clean, he said.
