The Million Years Stone Park donated Chonburi-bred buffalos to farming families in 11 districts in a belated celebration of HM the Queen’s Aug. 12 birthday.

Park executives and Chonburi Permanent Secretary Chawalit Saeng-Uthai joined Banglamung District Chief Sakchai Taengho and Suan Panomwattanakul, chairman of the Chonburi Cultural Council and other guests at the Sept. 5 ceremony.

The park gave 22 buffaloes – five of them juveniles – away to families in 11 districts. The donations, worth a total of 900,000 baht, were made in hopes they will be used in the annual October buffalo races.

Suan said that while Chonburi organizes annual buffalo races, not many of the beasts are being bred locally. By giving them away, the hopes are more buffaloes will be bred and raced, he said.

“The objective is to keep breeding the Chonburi buffaloes and expand in numbers, in order to keep the traditional buffalo racing that is popular in Chonburi active,” Suan said.
