Naklua’s Soi Kanrua
to get new drainage system

Deputy Mayor Verawat Khakhay
(front left) leads city officials to inspect Naklua’s Soi Kanrua boatyard
district with the intent of stopping flooding there.
Phasakorn Channgam
Pattaya will spend 8 million baht to hopefully solve long-running
flood problems in Naklua’s Soi Kanrua boatyard district.
Deputy Mayor Verawat Khakhay and Sanitation Department Director Weerat
Jeerasriphaithun met with affected business owners July 2. Verawat explained
that city hall has wanted to lay new drainage pipes and roads in the area
for a long time, but objections from business owners, combined with
unreliable contractors repeatedly delayed plans.
Faced with flooding that worsens each year, owners of the many boat-repair
and construction yards in the area finally appeared willing to put up with
months of construction that will force them to reduce or suspend business.

The two phase project, scheduled to run September through
December, will see contractors dig a 1.5-meter-deep concrete reservoir at
Klong Plub near the Pattaya Water Pumping Station to catch storm runoff,
three reservoirs along Soi Kanrua, new 1.2-meter-wide drainage pipes and
repave the street with concrete.
As part of construction, some boatyards will have to temporarily remove huge
concrete blocks used to drydock boats under service.
Verawat promised to make the disruption as short and painless as possible
for residents and businesses.
