PCEC holds 2013 AGM
At the Pattaya City Expats
Club AGM on the 7th of July, it was time to thank all those who had
contributed to a successful year. Board member Jerry Dean presents
Certificates of Appreciation to Richard Silverberg for sterling service as
an MC, and to Mike Warner and Wilson Fletcher for greeting visitors & new
members to the club.
Since the first Sunday in July is the Pattaya City Expats
Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), there was no speaker scheduled for July
7. The AGM consisted of several business items, such as the report of the
Electoral Officer and the report of the Treasurer; the presentations of
certificates of appreciation; and a report on the events of the past year.
Lawrie McLoughlin, the Electoral Officer, announced that there were five
candidates for the five vacant positions on the Board and so all five have
been acclaimed. The positions are for two years. The five persons are: Pat
Koester, Richard Smith, David Garmaise, Darrel Vaught (all Board incumbents)
and Wilson Fletcher (a newcomer to the Board).
The Treasurer, Judith Edmonds, presented the Treasurer’s report for the year
ending 30 June 2013. Judith indicated that at the end of the year the cash
on hand had increased 25 thousand baht over the start of the year. She
explained that several factors contributed to the increase, including: (1)
an increase in the number of members; and (2) a decrease in the costs
incurred for speakers. Judith further reported that the Club now has 72 more
members than at this time a year ago.
Board member David Garmaise
mentioned the topics of the 51 meetings held since last AGM; authors,
doctors, interesting people from all walks of life have addressed PCEC.
David’s slide shows authors Christopher Moore and Jake Needham, two of the
more popular speakers.
Darrel Vaught provided a report on the changes made
during this past year on distributing the Club’s weekly newsletter.
Previously, the Newsletter was distributed by email to a manually maintained
mailing list. This was changed by using Mail Chimp, an online service
designed for email marketing campaigns; but available to individuals and
organizations at no cost provided they did not have more than 2,000 email
addresses in their mailing list. Darrel explained how the automated mailing
list worked and the statistical reports provided. The Sergeant-at-Arms,
Jerry Dean, explained the responsibilities of that position. He also
mentioned that he instituted the current practice of presenting on the big
screen the pre-meeting announcements of upcoming events and ongoing
activities of the Club and the Special Interest Groups.
Pat and Jerry presented certificates of appreciation to two Club members,
Mike Warner and Wilson Fletcher, for their volunteer work over the last year
as greeters at the Sunday meetings. Pat also presented a certificate of
appreciation to member Richard Silverberg in recognition of his excellent
work as meeting emcee, which he has been doing for several years (almost
full-time in the last year or so).
Club Treasurer Judith Edmonds
shares the experiences on the trip to Chiang Mai, with fellow club members.
Three Board members took turns narrating a slide show on
the people and the events of the past year. David Garmaise talked about the
Club’s Sunday meetings. Stuart Saunders described some of the other events
and activities. Finally, Pat talked about the Club’s volunteers and special
interest groups, thanking them and emphasising that it is not necessary to
be a Board member in order to volunteer or start a special interest group.
After a brief Question and Answer session, the AGM was formally adjourned
and the regular meting resumed. Master of Ceremonies Richard Silverberg
updated everyone on upcoming events and then called on Roy Albiston to
conduct the Open Forum, where questions are asked and answered and comments
made about Expat living in Thailand.
The Club’s Board of Governors met immediately following
the Club meeting to elect officers for the coming year; they are: Pat
Koester, Chair; Stuart Saunders, Vice-Chairman; David Garmaise, Secretary;
Judith Edmonds, Treasurer; and Jerry Dean, Sergeant-at-arms. To learn more

The PJ Bar and Pool on Soi Khao Noi held a fundraiser on Friday 5th July
for Bill Louth, a 94-year-old pensioner who uses a wheelchair, who has recently
come out of hospital. The fundraiser was organised by Cyril ‘Chris” Gibbins and
Neil Ormsby to cover some of Bill’s ongoing medical bills.
A raffle was held which raised 7,600 baht and President Graham Hunt-Crowley of
the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya donated 5,000 baht to the fund. Three of the
raffle winners donated back their prizes to be auction, which means that a total
14,600 baht was raised that night.
A good night was had by all, as PJ Bar and Pool is always popular with their
Friday Night live music and expat karaoke evening, led by that well known TV
presenter and singer Rose.
A total 14,600 baht was raised on the
evening.

The two vastly different forms of music by Bai Tuey and Paengko, both of whom
are popular artists with fan clubs nationwide, brought out a good crowd of
tourists.

The Havana Bar at the Holiday Inn is hosting monthly wine tasting events and
the second such event was held on Thursday the 4th of July. Since this rather
conveniently coincided with the American Day of Independence, it was fitting
that the wines featured were from California.
The Havana Bar is the perfect setting for events such as these and the 100 or so
guests were entertained by a highly skilled musician singing and playing
acoustic guitar, providing an ideal backdrop to the evening.
(L to R) Thanagon Poungbubpchart (Public Relations
and Marketing Communications Manager), Massiri Chaleewan (Food and Beverage
Manager of Holiday Inn Pattaya), Paul Strachan, Chutima Konfai (Director of
Sales) and Juthamard Boonchiwudtikun (PR Executive of Holiday Inn Pattaya).
The wines on offer included a selection of reds and whites from Fetzer and Bel
Arbor, from Chardonnays to Merlots and were complimented by a vast array of
Tapas and cheeses.
The wines on this evening were hosted by Central Food Retail Company and
represented the mid price bracket of wines retailing at under a 1000 baht a
bottle.
Ross Edward Marks, the Vice President for Wine, Spirits & Beer for Central Food
Retail Company Limited, stated that attitudes to wine drinking had changed
substantially in the past few years and that wine was now seen as something of a
prestige drink.
(L to R) Victoria Arnold (PR & Marketing
Communications Manager, Royal Cliff Hotels Group), Maria Socorro Gequillana (PR
& Marketing Communications Manager, PEACH - Royal Cliff Hotels Group) and Ichiro
Adachi (Senior Sales Manager - Japan, Royal Cliff Hotels Group).
Holiday Inn General Manager Garth Solly added that he was delighted with the
turnout for the Californian Wine Tasting and that the next event is planned for
Saturday the 3rd of August. The theme will be East meets West.

Green Pattaya fourth monthly
Clean up Big Buddha Hill 6 July 2013

It was time for the Green Pattaya to take on Big Buddha Hill one more
time. As usual City Hall lent a helping hand and people from all different
groups came to help us clean this neglected part of the temple park. The
decision to visit Big Buddha again was driven by the success of the second clean
up at the Cosy Beach that even now almost a month after the cleaning is
spotless.
At midday people from the Rotary Club Eastern Seaboard came to erect tents in
the park and they were visited by KOTO (Keeper of the Ocean) a Pattaya
personality and longtime environmental activist. He started to feed the local
cats and dogs and they were mighty happy to see him. Green Pattaya will probably
return the favor and help KOTO clean Jomtien Beach.
Pattaya City Hall, local guests and the media arrived and cleaning started as
scheduled at 13.00. At 16.00 Pattaya City Hall said goodbye and took a full
truck of garbage with them. Pattaya City Hall were made very aware by Green
Pattaya of the issues in the park and they promised to come back to us very
soon. City Hall Environmental Department together with Green Pattaya and RCES
will put up bins around the park for a trial period. Almost all the foreign
language media was represented at the clean up and many companies like Kingdom
Property and Amazon Travel came to support the cleaning. You can find out more
