Bangkok – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has cooperated with the Ministry of Digital for Economy and Society and Chulalongkorn University to organize an exhibition and seminar entitled “5G for Thailand as ASEAN’s Number One.”

Digital for Economy and Society Minister Pichet Darungkhaverot who presided over the opening ceremony remarked that Thailand is going to lead 5G technology in the ASEAN community and will begin to use it from next year, following a bidding process on frequencies concessions provided by the NBTC.

He said 5G technology provides real-time transfers of data at a speed by 100 times as fast as 4G and that such advancement in the country’s major infrastructure will enormously benefit the economy.

NBTC Secretary General Thakorn Tanthasit said 5G technology will add more than 2.3 trillion baht in value to the economy by 2035.

However, so far no studies have been conducted on the possible negative side-effects of a blanket 5G rollout. Critics of the technology say a large increase in radiation frequency and the vast number of transmission masts required to implement a 5G network, could pose a potential hazard to public health.
