BANGKOK, Thailand — A ceiling at the canteen on the B2 level of Thailand’s Parliament building collapsed on Sunday, damaging tables and chairs below, with no injuries reported. The incident occurred during the weekend when the area was not being used by government officials, parliamentary staff or members of the public. The absence of people in the canteen at the time prevented what could have been a serious accident.
The affected area is normally busy on working days, particularly around lunchtime, when parliamentary officials, employees and other personnel use the canteen. Members of Parliament, senators and visitors attending meetings also use facilities in the area. The collapse has raised concerns about the potential consequences had the ceiling fallen during normal working hours, when the canteen could have been crowded and people seated directly beneath the affected section.
Officials and engineering personnel responsible for the Parliament building inspected the site after the incident and assessed the damage. An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the collapse, including whether it was related to structural problems, moisture or deterioration of construction materials.
The affected section is expected to remain cordoned off while repairs and detailed safety inspections are carried out. Authorities will assess the surrounding area to ensure there are no additional safety risks before allowing the facility to reopen.
