BANGKOK, 11 September 2015 – The Ministry of Education has insisted that students would become more skillful and creative in their learning if they spent fewer hours inside the classroom.

According to Deputy Education Minister Dr. Theerakiat Jaroensettasin, his ministry is determined to carry on with the work of his predecessor in an effort to transform the Thai education.

A meeting will be held each week at the Ministry of Education to make sure that progress is made, with a focus on promoting creativity and life skills. Changes are currently being made to the curriculum.

Classroom hours will be reduced to allow students to improve other areas of out-of-classroom learning instead of paying too much attention to rote lessons.

Although classroom hours have been cut short, no students will be allowed to go home before the end of school day, said the Deputy Minister. The new learning approach will be tested in 3,000 schools and monitored throughout the semester.

The Office of the Higher Education Commission has also been made aware of curriculum changes and instructed to design a university level entrance exam that reflects student’s new academic experiences.
