The meeting followed complaints appeared in local and foreign press regarding human rights violations on alien workers. Those reports include a case in which Cambodian workers who were employed at a seafood factory in Songkhla had not been paid fair wages as stipulated by the government. Some reports revealed the life of Cambodian workers who had been lured to Thailand to work in orange orchards, but had instead been forced to work on fishing boats.
Admiral Chai noted that the human rights situation of alien workers in Thailand is of high interest to numerous international agencies.
