BANGKOK, July 31 -- Four hundred thousand foreign labourers have now been legally registered at 34 registration centres across Thailand, while some centres, including those in Samut Sakorn province, have stopped accepting further registrations.

Employment Department Director Sumeth Mahosot said that Thai employers in 33 provinces have now registered 403,849 illegal migrant workers, and 20,645 dependants under their care at 34 One Stop Service centres nationwide, as of July 30.

The Samut Sakhon Employment Office head said that yesterday, July 30, was the last day for the One Stop Service Centre in Samut Sakhon to accept registration applications for migrant workers.

The centre was crowded with employers eagerly trying to legalise their workers' status in Thailand, with 533 employers stopping at the centre to register their migrant workers on the last day alone.

He said that since the centre was opened from June 30 to July 30, 8,955 employers have registered 65,811 foreign labourers at the centre.
