CHIANG RAI, 15 May 2013 In a huge drug bust in Chang Rai, Soldier from Pha Muang Task Force seized over one million methamphetamine pills and 43 kilograms of crystal meth (ice), with a total street value of one billion baht.

Acting on a tip-off that there would be an attempt to smuggle a large amount of illegal drugs into Thailand through the border, Pha Muang force commander Maj Gen Somsak Nilbanjerdkul deployed a special task force to patrol the Mae Sai-Koh Chang road in tambon Mae Sai of Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

The patrol was on the rural road at Ban Wiang Hom when they spotted seven men carrying big fertilizer sacks on their shoulders. The patrol force signaled them to stop and the seven men immediately dropped the sacks and fled back over the border to Myanmar. The abandoned sacks contained 1.66 million methamphetamine pills and 43 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (ice).

The soldiers believed the smugglers were members of the gang led by self-styled Lt Col Yise, who was behind the smuggling of drugs across the border.
