Nines were wild at Nong Nooch Tropical Garden as nine elephants with a combined age of 99 years cast nine candles to present to nine temples over nine days for Buddhist Lent.

Park Director Kampol Tansajja oversaw the July 11 event with Kasem Kitti Sophon, abbot of Samakhee Banphot Temple heading up a delegation of monks for the Buddhist Lent candle casting.

Kampol said candles have been a symbol of Buddhist Lent for centuries, as monks traditionally stayed inside and needed illumination to study dharma.

The candles will be presented from July 11-19 to Sangwararam Wornwihan, Samakhee Banpot, Amparam, Bang Saray Kharam, Najomtien, Khao Bamphen, Khao Khattaman, Nongjubtao and Mai Yuu Sa-ngad temples.
