BANGKOK, 20 August 2014  – The Forum for East Asia- Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC) is being held at the Bangkok Convention Center in an effort to build a friendly cooperation between the two regions.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry together with three institutions from the private sector are hosting the FEALAC Business forum under the theme “Connecting the Two Engines of Global Growth” to enhance trade and investment between Thailand and Latin America.

Deputy Permanent-Secretary for Foreign Affairs Mr. Narong Sasitorn presided over the opening ceremony of FEALAC business forum, one of the side events of the 15th Forum for East Asia and Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).

The forum is aimed towards moving forward the relations and cooperation between East Asia and Latin America, and encourages Thai private sectors to take a leading role while strengthening business connections between the regions.

The event is also joined by prominent figures including Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, the former Secretary-General of ASEAN, in a bid to provide insightful and incisive perspectives on inter-regional economic trade and investment activities.

FEALAC is an inter-regional cooperation platform consisting of 36 member countries. FEALAC is representing 39% of the global population, 33% of the global GDP, and 33% of global trade.

In terms of trade and investment, the bilateral trade has reached as high as $16 billion last year, with considerable room for growth by both sides’ complimentary economic structure.

Within the meeting, Foreign Ministers of FEALAC countries have deliberated on ways and means to enhance East Asia-Latin America cooperation in many areas, particularly promoting interconnectivity between the two regions, and jointly addressing global challenges.
