winning all four points from Bavaria. No one bowled very well on the
difficult eleven and twelve lanes.

228 game, 515 series, to help Caf้ Kronborg to a three point win over
Canada.

Bartley beats the rain at Royal Hills
PSC Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Winners at Royal Hills on
Thursday, July 21.
Mike Gerrard
Quite a variety of events this week; firstly on Tuesday
the 19th July we started with a smaller field than usual due to the rest of
the week’s events. So playing at Phoenix on the Tuesday on the Mountain and
Lake course for the first time for a long time we set of in three groups on
a fairly nice day. We were pleasantly surprised at the good condition of the
course, which is improving day by day.
A course record was achieved today with all three groups
completing 18 holes in about 3 hours 45 minutes. There was hardly anyone on
the course today. We nearly arrived at The Relax Bar before they opened!
Winning today with a fine knock (well I thought so) was
myself (Mike Gerrard) with 37 points followed closely by Graham Ellis with
another fine knock of 36 points. Sadly there was not enough in the pot to
award a third place which would have gone to Tim Mason. However, one of the
two near pins went to Tim with the other going to Graham Ellis.
The lucky draw prizes donated by The Relax Bar went to
Stuart Gordon, Bob Neylon and Sergio Volpi.
An early night was called for today because we all had to
be up early to get to Royal Hills Golf and Hotel the following day for a two
day tournament.
I had received a call the previous night from Shaun
Merriman to tell me there had been heavy rain at Royal Hills. One thinks
immediately that one day’s rain brings two to three weeks fine weather here.
Think Again McDuff!
The trip up via the 331 was pretty good in terms of
travelling. The new road set up at Amata City seems to have cured most of
the traffic problems there (depends on what time you go through though). We
had no more than the usual wait at any traffic lights.
On arriving at the hotel it was pretty awesome. The hotel
and the scenery is one of the finest golfing facilities I have ever seen.
The scenery is set in beautiful valleys. This however was the problem for
the duration of the trip; at this time of the year valleys attract a lot of
heavy clouds and this week was possibly the worst on record.
We started off on the first day in reasonably dry
conditions, but that soon turned to heavy showers and then continuous heavy
rain. This caused most players to just endure the day with the exception of
two of the group. ‘Big’ John Bartley murdered the front nine with a fine 20
points, only to surrender slightly on the back nine with another 13 points.
However this was enough to secure first place on the day with a total of 33
points. Just behind was one of our guests Bob Rasmusson with 32 points. With
a stunning final 5 holes (doubling his score) Stuart Gordon managed to
accumulate 30 points to finish third.
With over half of the group bringing their respective
partners or wives the evening turned out a little more pleasant as we all
dined together in the superb hotel dining room. There was much banter
followed by many of the group becoming exhausted and retiring to their rooms
at about 10.00pm. Well that was the excuse of the ones who were not married.
The following morning we all assembled at the breakfast
room and after a fine breakfast we decided that we would have to make
special rules for the day regarding playing on a pond. Yes folks the course
was absolutely flooded and there seemed no let up in the rain.
Anywhere else in the world the course would have been
closed, but with tourists willing to spend money the thought of protection
for the course goes out the window here, it really was a wellies day.
Sadly after about 6 holes most of our group decided
enough was enough and the caddies phoned for transport to take us all back
to the clubhouse. The third group however did not know we had done this and
they carried on playing. This meant that the rest of us had to sit and wait
for them to come in (some 4 hours later). If ever I have seen drowned rats,
all of the last group looked that way.
Such a shame really because we had managed to receive
sponsorship from KPK Food Services Ltd, Trattoria Italiana and San Miguel
for the two day event. Our most sincere thanks go to all of our sponsors. So
everyone (including all the girls) received a commemorative glass from San
Miguel. The golfers only received a sleeve of 3 golf balls as endurance
reward.
The second day winner was again John Bartley who came in
with a fine 37 points ahead of Ted Orton (28pts) in second.
With the whole thing reduced to a bad weather farce the
rest of the entrance fee monies for the competition was refunded. Brightest
news of the event was that the hotel gave us a rain check for 8 players on
our next trip there -a nice gesture, we thought.
The only thing left to do was drive back to Pattaya and
the thought of nice sunshine and heat. No such thing. When we did arrive
back about 7.30pm the rain was pelting down here as well.
Anyone interested in joining in with the fun (and serious golf) call me
(Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Courses in good shape,
bonus for golfers
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
PARASUB: Tuesday, July 19, Emerald – Skins
Tuesday was a trip down to Ban Chang to play Emerald,
where the course is in good nick just now, following greens maintenance of
nine holes. No doubt this will drop off, temporarily (I hope) as the other 9
receives its maintenance.

A smiling Allan Cassin, happy
to be back.
Small group again so we played some skins, with Jeff
leading the way from Ray, while Jimmy & Clive were unlucky as some good
shots went unrewarded as someone popped up with “a half”.
Thursday, July 21, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Thursday saw us visit the always popular, because it is
such a good test, Khao Kheow, where the C & A combination was to be the test
de jour, (how’s that Ray?). 3 single figure golfers in the group today, who
generally handled the course best, with Jeff Wylie (8) leading the way with
a strong 40 points, while Barry Wellings (4) was next best with a fine 36
points. Near Pins went to Steve, Barry & Jeff with 2.
Friday was the PSC tournament at Treasure Hill with
Mulligans Lakeside continuing to give support, on this occasion with good
rewards for participants; Jeff Wylie winning the Low Gross, Allan Cassin
winning the B flight and Nigel Irvine getting a near pin.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with
presentation at the course Tuesday & Mulligans Lakeside hosting on
Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you

Treasure in the Hill
PSC 108th Monthly Golf Tournament

50/50 winner –who’s a lucky girl then.
Nigel Canon
It has been some years since the PSC held a monthly at
Treasure Hill but Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham decided to go there for the
July Tournament on Friday, July 22, and what a fine decision it was!

A Hard Days Night.
The organizing group of Joe, the scribe and Bob Lindborg
were greeted on arrival with the news that no other golfers would be on the
course until our last groups had cleared.
The course continues to show great signs of improvement,
not just on the playing areas but cosmetically around the whole layout with
many trees being planted not just young ones but established trees moved
from elsewhere.
As most were leaving Pattaya it was dull, overcast and
raining as it was at Treasure Hill until the first groups were due to tee
off - when it stopped until last groups were completing their rounds.
It was a big field with 92 players, including 14 ladies,
and a number playing in a PSC tournament for the first time. There were 4
men’s flights plus ladies with a 2 tee start and with the previous rain it
was ‘pick and place’.

Dependable Colin, always
there.
This is known as a ‘tough track’ but we had some great
scores: - it was two net 72’s for 1st and 2nd
in A Flight and 41 and 40 points winning B and C Flights, and with a 75 off
the stick, it was Jeff Wylie who had the lowest gross on the day.
As the players came in to have their scores recorded,
there were many favorable comments about the course. After a bite, a drink
and a chat it was time to head back to Pattaya for the presentation of
prizes.
Once again Lewiinski’s laid on an excellent buffet with
European and Thai food with some delicious desserts and their usual
efficient service. PSC thanks Colin and his team.
Presentation time and the MC (your scribe) welcomed all
and introduced Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham. Joe thanked all for supporting
this day and particularly welcomed the group of ladies. Today – and in
future monthly competitions - there will be a 50/50 lucky draw with 50%
going to a lucky winner and 50% going into the golf account to enhance the
prizes.
It was back to the scribe to announce the winners and for
Joe to present the prizes. Before the 50/50 it was the usual lucky draw with
Noy Emmerson drawing the winning cards. Joe then drew the first 50/50 winner
who was Yua Phaohom who went home a very happy lady!

Kinmond in control
at Pattaya C.C.
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

Wednesday winner Paul A.
Kinmond (left) with runner-up Arnold van de Graaf.
Pattaya Country Club was in fine shape this 20th of July
and one could not ask for better golfing conditions with strong cloud cover
and a light breeze and no sun to be seen. However, based on a bulk of the
scores, it seems our stalwart heroes of the green need to be “hot” to play
well.
Back at Caddy Shack II while the players enjoyed snacks and “Spicy!”
dogs, the cards were tallied. Paul A. Kinmond finished with a respectable 37
points while (whilst for our British friends) Arnold van de Graaf came in
with 34. By our usual standards, not too good as the scores then went from
30 all the way down to a 23. Still, everyone enjoyed the outing and will be
looking forward to next week when the end-of-the month trophy is up for
grabs.
Flanagan and Land hit roaring forties
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Suzi Lawton.
Monday, July 18, Burapha - Stableford
Fifteen Outbackers travelled to Burapha for our normal
Monday outing and played the A and B nines of the blue markers, rated at
72.6 with a slope of 136. The course was again lightly attended and we teed
off at 9.30am (30mins early) and even though our groups caught up with
another group which appeared slow, everybody was off the course inside 4
hours.
The A course was in suburb condition with dry fairways,
lush cut rough and dry approaches to the greens, which were running true and
held, but B was entirely different with wet fairways and rough, greens that
had been sanded and scarified and generally looked tired.
The caddy’s informed us that B and D had been scarified
and sanded so why didn’t Burapha let us play A and C as they did last week –
otherwise a good day out spoilt by poor management.
Welcome to Ken Priddy, Fred Land and Colin Goon having
their first game with the Outback for a while and goodbye to Bruce McAdam
who leaves for pastures greener.
The numbers were unusually down for Burapha, possibly
because of confusing reports that today was a holiday, which it wasn’t, so
there was only one division. However, there was some excellent scoring with
the course calculated as playing one shot easier than par; the win went to
Doone Flanagan with 40 points on her 20 handicap on a count-back from Fred
Land on a 19 handicap. Third was Pete Stonebridge with 37 points on
count-back from his playing partner Bob Lindborg and fifth was John
Cunningham on 36 points on another count-back from Jerry Quin and Bruce
McAdam.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Doone Flanagan (20/Hi19.6)
40pts
2nd Fred Land (19/Hi15.7) 40pts
3rd Pete Stonebridge (17/Hi13.4)
37pts
4th Bob Lindborg (22/Hi17.9) 37pts
5th John Cunningham (10/Hi7.7)
36pts
Tuesday, July 19, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
Sixteen Outbackers plus another three who came along just
for a hit, turned up at a well presented Pattaya Country Club. The fairways
and approaches had dried out a fair bit, allowing the ball some roll and the
greens were good and holding; the weather was dry with a good wind which
kept the temperatures down. All in all they were great playing conditions
which is reflected generally by the good scoring and the computer calculated
that the course played one shot easier than par.
General Jack has eventually found a bit of form, and even
though he wiped the 17th he scored 40 points to win
the day ahead of one of his playing partners, Geoff Moodie on 39, who beat
Nigel Cannon on count-back.
Barry Chadbourn, who has seen his handicap reduced by
nearly four shots in recent weeks, was also there at the turn but he could
only manage 16 points on the back nine to finish on 36 points, just enough
to pip the Turnip into fifth place. Orn, aka Mrs Marney, continued her good
run here at Pattaya C.C., finishing in the frame yet again on 37 points to
take fourth.
There were four ‘2’s from Raji & Bobby Driggs on Hole 5,
Bert Lewis on Hole 7 and Raji bagged another one on Hole 12.
1st Jack Moseley (15/Hi15.6) 40pts
2nd Geoff Moodie (24/Hi24) 39pts
3rd Nigel Cannon (23/Hi22.5) 39pts
4th Orn Kanasaengsri (18/Hi16.7)
37pts
5th Barry Chadbourn (16/Hi16.4)
36pts
Wednesday, July 20,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
By all reports, there is still a considerable amount of
work being carried out on this course as it continues to improve, most of it
to the approval of the 15 Outbackers who played here.
After a little rain at the start it turned out to be a
pleasant enough day weather-wise as many players were using today’s round as
a rehearsal for PSC’s monthly, here on Friday (22nd). The smart money for
the PSC event would have to be on Brian Maddox who won today with 38 points
to follow his win here last month on 29th June with 40
points, so Brian obviously likes this course.
Second today was Colin Goon with an excellent 35, Messrs
Briggs (32) and Driggs (31) took third and fourth respectively and Doone
Flanagan (30) found herself in the frame again, in fifth.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Brian Maddox (19/Hi18) 38pts
2nd Colin Goon (3/Hi3.6) 35pts
3rd Tony Briggs (13/Hi12.1) 32pts
4th Bobby Driggs (13/Hi12) 31pts
5th Doone Flanagan (22/Hi18.4)
30pts
Friday, July 22,
Khao Kheow – Stableford
There was the PSC monthly medal at Treasure Hill today,
leaving a reduced field of just 12 Outbackers here at Khao Kheow to play the
C & A nines. We nearly didn’t have that many as a mix up by our driver took
many of our field to Treasure Hill by mistake, our thanks to Joe Mooneyham
(PSC Golf Chairman) for spotting the error and pointing them back in our
direction.
Eventually teeing off nearly an hour late, the course was
found to be in very ordinary condition apart from the greens, which were
good. To be fair, it was very wet and maybe the recent rains have had much
effect on the management’s maintenance programme but it is disappointing to
see a marked increase in the indigenous broad leaf grass.
Suzi Lawton had an excellent round, rarely missing a
fairway and chipping extremely well, to score 39 points off 17, followed in
by a newcomer to the Outback, Pete Kirby who scored 35 points off 26. His
mate, Matt Blevins scored the only ‘2’, which was the highlight of his round
and the General preferred to NR after the delayed start.
1st Suzi Lawton (17/Hi16.4) 39
2nd Peter Kirby (26/Hi26) 35pts
3rd Andy Makara (31/Hi25.4) 34pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or
give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Bland shoots 72 off the stick
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar

Don Bland (left) with the
Golf Manager Brad Sproxton.
Monday, July 18, Green
Valley – Stableford
1st Don Bland (5) 41pts
2nd Sonny Crawford (9) 38pts
3rd Ozzie Steve (12) 35pts
4th Adam Farrell (12) 34pts
5th Keith Worboys (14) 34pts
Near Pins: Jimmy Dundon
Twenty-four golfers joined us today at Green Valley
with some having more success than others. Don Bland fired a wonderful
gross 72 off the stick for 41 points and the day’s top honor. Things got
off to a great start making birdie, par, birdie and keeping the momentum
through the round. Sweet swinging Sonny Crawford was second with a great
38 points.
Ozzie Steve and his mate Adam were playing there last
round of their trip and managed to get into the frame. They wanted one
last game before they headed to the airport. Imagine their red faces
when arriving at the airport they discovered that they were supposed to
have left the day before! At least you got that last round in hey
fellas!
Keith Worboys was 5th today having been beaten by
Adam on the back 9. Jimmy Dundon took the near pin honor.
Tuesday, July 19, Siam
Old Course – Stableford
1st Jeff Calrow (12) 41pts
2nd Keith Worboys (13) 39pts
3rd Serge Strachen (16) 38pts
4th Micheal Mier (6) 37pts
5th Paul McNally (2) 36pts
Near Pins: Micheal Mier
2’s: Micheal Mier (2), Sonny Crawford, Paul
McNally, Benn Nelson
Tuesday we took advantage of the sports day at Siam
Old Course and it proved popular with 30 players signing up. It was
interesting to see that 3 of the 5 winners in the frame are members at
Siam. Some local knowledge surely came into play.
Jeff Calrow had every part of his game clicking
resulting in a fine 41 points. Fellow member and playing partner Keith
Worboys fed off of Jeff and turned in a 39 point card. Serge Strachen
controlled the putter and came in with 38 points. He was closely
followed by Micheal Mier who had two 2’s and the near pin, scoring 37
points. Paul McNally finished our frame of winners with a very
respectable 36 points and a 2.
Wednesday, July 20,
Phoenix – Stableford
1st Peter Hynard ( 13) 34pts
2nd Ian Grout (7) 34pts
We had a small turnout today for Phoenix, only 2
groups with some very average scores to say the least. Peter “the quiet
one” Hynard beat out Ian Grout on the dreaded count-back by 17 to 14.
The remainder of the field played some sub-standard golf on greens that
were the same. Thanks to all that supported us this week.

Duthie doubles up with back to back wins
PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society

Monday’s A & B Flight winners:
Fred Land & Tony Duthie.
Tuesday, July 19, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Once again we arrived at the course to find out we had it
virtually to ourselves and as always here it was in good condition. So with
a good turn out today we split the field up into two divisions and set off
for a very pleasant round of golf.
The A flight was taken in great style by Fred Land with
40 points. Fred has only been back in Thailand for one week and this is the
third time he has amassed 40 plus points. I can just visualise the
handicapper sharpening his scissors right now! Only one other player managed
to play under his handicap, Shaun Tracey with 37 points, well played Shaun.
Ning Neal also carried on with her good form to finish third.
In the B flight the scores were not so flattering where
(Steady Eddie) Tony Duthie just managed to sneak home in first place with 32
points. There was a three-way count-back for the other two places where the
unfortunate Alex Millbourn lost out.
Near pins went to Fred Land, Richard Hurley, Alex
Millbourn and Billy Vickers.
A Flight
1st Fred Land (16) 40pts
2nd Shaun Tracey (15) 37pts
3rd Ning Neal (15) 35pts
B Flight
1st Tony Duthie (20) 32pts
2nd Brian Neal (20) 31pts
3rd Ken Meek (21) 31pts
Thursday, July 21,
Bangpakong - Stableford
Every once in a while it’s worth the trip to come up here
and play this course. But today it was a bit of a lottery as the weather
turned really nasty after just five holes. It began pouring with rain and
continued for almost an hour. 30% of the players gave up and returned to the
club house while the other 70% stayed out and braved the conditions.
Although it was very wet underfoot the course was still playable and was
drying out by the minute. Unfortunately for those who gave up this course
does not adhere to the rain check policy.
Of those who stayed out Tony Duthie took the honours with
33 points which was not bad in the conditions. This was the second time this
week he has finished in pole position.
Near pins went to Fred Land, Tony Duthie (2) and Jason
Cole.
1st Tony Duthie (20) 33pts
2nd Ken Meek (21) 32pts
3rd Jason Cole (5) 31pts
4th Fred Land (14) 31pts
Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society
is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road. Anyone wishing to
play with us can call into the club house and put their names down on the
lists provided or call Scott on 084 389 2379. Transport provided if

Bernie Cairns wins his first Monthly Mug
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg

Bjarne (left) presents the
July Monthly Mug to Bernie Cairns.
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday, July 19, Plutaluang – Stableford
With Monday being a Public Holiday we opted to play the
following day this week and in doing so were able to take advantage of the
Sports Day at the Navy Course (620 baht for Green Fee & Caddy) and thirteen
golfers were ready to take on the West & North nines.

Kevin Dinan, The Admiral &
Peter Blackburn.
We welcomed Brian Saatterup and Torben Sorensten from
Greenland and acknowledged the return of Jerry Garcia from Hawaii and Walter
Baechli from his cycling tour in Spain.
Departing Caf้ Kronborg a tad early at 0813hrs it took
just 43 minutes for the journey and without too much delay we were able to
get our first group away at 0920hrs, 40 minutes ahead of schedule. The
course was looking and playing in great shape with the greens on the West
nine being in very good nick and on the North nine also fine although
comparatively slower than the first nine.
The weather was terrific despite The Admiral’s prediction
of rain and with just one brief stop for drinks we breezed round the first
nine in just on two hours. The second nine was just a touch slower with a
not too speedy Thai threesome in front of us but the eighteen holes was
completed in the excellent time of four hours and five minutes.
We decided on 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to
17 and B Flight for 18 handicappers & over. Thanks to the generosity of
Walter Baechli there were rewards for nearest the pins on all the par
threes.
Most found the going tough as only one golfer played
better than his handicap and it was your scribe who took out the A Flight
with 39 points, 5 points clear of the consistent Takeshi Hakozaki in second
place and Walter Baechli with 32 points finished third. Veteran Kevin Dinan
won the B Flight with 34 points with Dave Richardson second on 30 points and
81 year old Hugh O’Donnell came third with 29 points.
A Flight
1st Peter Blackburn (12) 39pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 34pts
3rd Walter Baechli (17) 32pts
B Flight
1st Kevin Dinan (23) 34pts
2nd Dave Richardson (25) 30pts
3rd Hugh O’Donnell (22) 29pts
Near Pins: W3 Peter Blackburn; W8 Mike Allidi; N3
Mike Allidi; N6 Ken Bernek
Newcomer Brian Saatterup effortlessly won the Compass Cap
and in Hunter’s absence Toddy took Deefa the Dog for a walk around and
collected more donations for charity.
Thursday, July 21, Pattaya
C.C. - Monthly Mug/Stroke
There had been some overnight rain in Pattaya but the
Admiral forecasted that we should get through without getting wet so the 20
starters for this month’s Caf้ Kronborg Monthly Mug at Pattaya Country club
were all geared up for the challenge of our monthly stroke round.
Stu was running late but arrived without holding up our
departure from the Kronny and we left just after 0815hrs and arrived at the
course in what seemed like the blink of an eye just 25 minutes later. We had
a 1000hrs tee time booked but persuaded the starter to let our 5 groups hit
off before a 0934hrs booking and our first foursome got away at 0900hrs
exactly. In fantastic weather for golf we flew round the front nine in just
under 2 hours and had a fifteen minute drinks break before tackling the
second nine.
The course was in great shape and we generally kept the
ball on the fairways resulting in no searches for lost balls which of course
helped to contribute to the excellent time. The second nine was pretty much
the same and the round was all over in three hours and fifty–seven minutes.
It must be mentioned that this course has improved immensely over the last
few months with well kept fairways and very good greens.
We had 2 flights, A Flight for 0 to 17 and B Flight for
handicaps of 18 and over plus the Monthly Mug winner and there was a reward
for nearest the pins on two of the par threes..
Kenny Bernek was very keen to make it back to back
Monthly Mugs and Bernie Cairns admitted that the winning of a Caf้ Kronborg
Monthly Mug was on his “Bucket List”. Well – Ken just missed by two shots
for his two in a row but Bernie Cairns can cross his wish off his Bucket
List as he won the Mug with an excellent net 68.
As previously mentioned Ken Bernek won the A Flight with
a net 70 on a count-back from Paul Avery who finished second. In third place
was Martin Todd with net 71 and yours truly managed to hang in there and
finish fourth with a net 75.
B Flight was won by The Admiral himself with a net 71,
just one shot ahead of Kevin Dinan in second place. There was a count-back
to decide third and fourth with Daryl Evans edging out Wayne Koch, both
having net 73.
Many thanks once again to Bjarne and his family & staff
at Caf้ Kronborg for their continued support of this monthly event.

Mashi on top once more
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top three with one
of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, June 19,
Greenwood - Stableford
After a couple of weeks spent in England, it was a
pleasure to get back to the golf here in Thailand and to find we were
playing Greenwood with a full group. As I was really struggling with jetlag,
Dick ran the day and I was pleased that my old mate Keith took me in his
car. Mind, staying awake is a problem and during the day I had to be nudged
several times. It is fine going from here to the UK but coming back!
The rain started to patter down as we reached Greenwood,
and we were soon into reception to be told carts on the path only, however
during the round we were at first allowed in the rough and then on the
course. Still, we were soon onto the first tee and as we were playing A & B
we were straight away on A1 in a light breeze and a drizzly rain. The course
was found to be a little green, which is no problem, but it did restrict the
roll of the ball and I found the ball got caught up in the rough quite a
lot. Mind, I spend a lot of time there.
The greens were not at their fastest but quite reasonable
and this course will remain on our list to be played regularly. The rain was
a constant problem, remaining in the background at all times but every now
and then a squall would drop on us and soak us before moving on. Just back
from Manchester I found it was just like being in the UK.
Finished we were soon through the showers into the
restaurant and then into cars for the drive back. The return trip went
quickly as I nearly remember, then into Bert’s for the presentation. Once
there, the winners were read out and the scores were in the reasonable
bracket. Triumphing today with 39 points was our perennial winner Mashi
Kaneta with ahead of Mick O’Meara on 38 points in second. In third was
Graham Buckingham with 36 points and in fourth was Joel Flor with 35 on
count-back over Neil Shaw. T.T.F.N.

John ‘hot’ Foote’s it round the Valley
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, July 17,
Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Jan Erickseen (14) 37pts
2nd Eddy Bielby (15) 36pts
B Flight
1st John Foote (21) 41pts
2nd Adam Oyston (18) 39pts
Jan ‘the quite one’ Erickseen, everybody’s nice guy,
dazzled most of the premier flight with a solid 37 points. The only one guy
close to him was Eddy’ the eagle’ Bielby with a useful even par round.
But it was the premier flight that chucked up the man of
the match in John Foote as he posted an excellent 41 points. The big hitting
Adam Oyston closed the flight three strokes adrift. Adam did however have
the only 2 of the day.
Lewiinski’s welcomed back Ian ‘gizz a fag’ Grout.
Tuesday, July 19, Mountain
Shadow - Stableford
1st Gordon Cadle (29) 38 pts
2nd Mike Jeffery’s (17) 33 pts
It was a relatively light turnout by society standards
for the fine layout of Mountain Shadow. Gordon Cadle climbed to the top step
as he was the only player to better par on the day with a splendid 38
points. Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jeffery’s never far from the pay window
gratefully accepted the silver with a mere 33 points.
Gordon Cadle, Colin Davis and Jimmy Day divided the ‘2’s
pot.
Wednesday, July 20,
Bangpra - Stableford
1st Steve Rawlings (5) 34pts
2nd Jim Dundon (16) 32pts
3rd Michael Mier (6) 32pts
Perennial society favorite Bangpra was the site of
Wednesday’s outing where Steve Rawlings top scored with 34 points for the
match honors. Jim Dundon and Michael Mier squared off in a count-back for
the minor places, both on 32 points, with the scales tipping in Jim’s favor.
The society welcomed back Brian ‘the unbalanced’
Wilkinson.
The scribe decided to return to the UK to report on the
progress of the society’s Buckie boys who are playing the Strathlene four
day open: Lewiinski’s regulars Nick, Sugar and Reg. I was welcomed by the
famous Scottish weather, which was a howling gale force breeze and
temperatures not topping 10 Deg C. I never want to hear anybody winging
about the weather in Pattaya again!

1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.

Terry C beats off Andy M at Emerald
at Phoenix
The Backyard Golf Society

Andy M (left) and Terry C
(right) outside Mama’s Bar.
After a couple of weeks were not enough players turned up
to warrant a write-up it was nice to welcome John Mac, Bob G, and Andy M
back to the society for our weekly game at Emerald Golf Course. With rain
coming down a couple of us decided not to play but 7 players set off and
were rewarded after the third hole with fine weather for the rest of the
round.
Terry C won the game with 35 points and Andy M came a
creditable second on his debut this year. Nearest the pin also went to Andy
M and skin results are as follows: Terry C (6), JJ (5), Neville (4), Andy M
(1), John Mac (1) and finally Dan M (1).
After prize giving it was straight to Mama’s Bar where, yet again, Tip
outdid herself with ribs for all followed by a few cold ones to end yet
another Friday with the Backyard Golf Society.
Blair blitz at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the I.P.G.C.
Monday, July 18,
Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
A normal green fee here today after a few discussions
with the management considering it was a public holiday; many thanks to
Pattaya Country Club, but it was still relatively deserted and our last
group teed off just after ten o’clock.
The greens here have improved over the past few weeks
and are very slick and true and with a cool breeze and a cloudy
environment it was perfect.
The cut today was 7-16 in division 1 and 17+ plus in
division 2 and the best score of the day was 36 in division 1 from Helge
Bjunes, playing off 12, who finished one ahead of 9-handicapper Torgier
Tunge, and in third place with 34 points was Tony Thorne.
Yet again in first place, Brian Blackford won
division 2 with 35 points while Tom Novak was second after beating Harry
Vincenzi on a 15/14 back nine count-back after they both scored 30
points.
Mikael Andersson birdied the 7th and 16th to take the
‘2’s pot in division 1 and a rollover goes to Greenwood on Wednesday in
division 2.
The last group out today came in directly after the
four-ball in front. The lessons have been learned, we hope.
Wednesday, July 20,
Greenwood - Stableford
There were still two divisions out today and the cut
was 5-16 in division 1 and 17 plus in division 2.
Playing off 10 Torgier Tunge cames in on level par
gross 36 on the front nine to score 23 points, but it was slightly
downhill on the back nine as he only scored 15 to win division 1 with 38
points in total. Chris Voller was second two points behind and Phil
Mitchell, playing off 5, was third with 34.
Count-back Burnie was yet again in the news, winning
division 2 with 36 points ahead of Brain Howe in second with 35 and Ted
Morris in third on 34.
In the ‘2’s in division 1 there were no rollovers and
Phill Mitchell birdied the 6th on the A course to collect the pot. In
division 2 there were no ‘2’s so three rollovers to Bangpakong next
Monday.
It was bon voyage today to Chris Reed after his month
here and only one round of golf. We will say no more!
Friday, July 22,
Eastern Star - Stableford
Yet again another new member joined up at Eastern
Star for a life membership and the numbers are increasing every Friday.
There had been heavy rain here in Jomtien since early
morning and as we departed Siam Cats the phone started to ring. There
were seven cancellations on the way to the course so a total
rearrangement took place on the way there. In the end we had two
divisions with nearest the pins as well.
The first group went out in a slight drizzle and this
ended after three holes and the other 6 groups enjoyed a very pleasant
round.
His other half was away today and Darryl Blair,
playing off 17, shot 42 points to win division 1. Mikaael Andersson took
second with 37 and Chris Voller beat Bill Bertram 11/10 on the back six
after they both scored 31 points.
Lee Casey, playing off 22, won division 2 with 35
points, Jim Lane was second two points behind and Tom Novak was in third
with 30.
Probably the toughest par three on the course, the
13th , saw two birdie ‘2’s today; Mikael Andersson in division 1 and the
new boy Paul Hobson with a three inch putt in division 2. Roy Thornton’s
sponsored rollover prize on the 12th hole for nearest the pin in two
shots was won by Brian Priestley. There were many remarks afterwards
regarding the nearest the pin prizes and the ‘2’s, if you are having a
bad round in the stableford you can still come in winning a prize.
The last group out today, no names mentioned, kept up
with the group in front and the group behind. Well done boys, it is
getting through at last.
Near Pins: Tom Byrne, Brian Priestley, Tom
Novak, Mikael Andersson, Paul Hobson, Chris Voller, Bryan Rought

Franklin top scores for the week
Golf from the Travellers Rest

Players relax at the
Travellers Rest after Saturday’s outing to Emerald
Barry Hooper
Top scoring player of the week was John Franklin with a
great forty pointer at Rayong Green Valley on Tuesday July 19. It looks as
if John has hit a bit of a purple patch in his game because he also took a
win last week at Phoenix but on that occasion with a score of just thirty
six.
Another name that it was nice to see on the top of the
lists this week for a change is that of Roger Wilkinson. Roger is always it
seems there about in the top three or four but not at the top. But he pulled
of a first div win at Phoenix with thirty seven and then followed that with
a second spot at Emerald on Saturday with thirty six and was just pipped on
that occasion by Arnold Jones.
The only other winner of the week was Tony Smith with his
thirty seven for a Div 2 win at Phoenix.
Both the second places in the Phoenix outing were
count-back decisions with Fergus Brennan beating Magnus Larrson and Brett
Arnold beating Stephen Smith.
I notice that the entry numbers are on the increase this
week that is always nice to see. Long may it last
On a slightly different subject I queried with Fergus on
Saturday why the sudden change of venue from the original planned visit to
Greenwood. He advised me it was because Emerald are starting a scarifying
and sanding programme next week and he wanted to make one more visit before
they started the work. So be advised that course will be off the lists for a
few weeks now.
However anyone considering joining us at the TRGG can
always find a full list of the planned courses for the month of August on
the TRGG website and also in the weekly local press listings.

Yasuo holes out for a bag
Monday, July 18, Plutaluang -
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Al Rolnik (19) 37pts
2nd John Squitiero (18) 36pts
3rd Brian Henderson (18) 35pts
4th Yasuo Suzuki (8) 35pts
5th Barry Winton (5) 34pts
6th Graham Davis (7) 33pts

Yasuo Suzuki (left) is presented
with his hole in one prize bag by Stephen Beard.
Al Rolnik has been slowly getting back to his old form
following his three year sabbatical in India and the new beginning, about a
year ago, for his handicap when it was reassessed from the old level of 15
up to 22 following a few rounds of acclimatisation, to 22 from which it then
took nine months to move in a downward direction, but in the last two months
it has moved smartly down another five shots taking it back almost to its
old level following this week’s returns. A lot of the improvement can be
attributed to the hours of practice put in at the local range allied to a
strong desire to get his game back together. The day’s winning score, whilst
not being one of his best returns, was definitely another brick in the road
to his destination.

Al Rolnik.
John Squitiero turned out to be the usual suspect on the
podium with yet another return that, whilst not getting the attention of the
handicapper, took a prize for second place.
Brian Henderson on the other hand is a very infrequent
visitor to the podium, as he puts the enjoyment of the day far ahead of the
score, but on this occasion that score turned out to be good enough for
third place.
Yasuo Suzuki had a fairly quiet round apart from one hole
where he scored four points but in the end had more to celebrate than just a
fourth spot.
Barry Winton just edged out Graham Davis by a single
point to claim fifth place with a score that was one over his buffer zone.

Yukio Kikuchi.
Alastair Skene was hoping that it would be a happy
farewell to Pattaya taking the 2’s pool in the second division whilst Barry
Winton and Trevor Schirmer also thought they would be sharing the first
division pot. They were all mistaken in their assumptions, as Yasuo Suzuki
aced the 158 yards 8th hole on the west course to
sweep all the 2’s and set up a great evening after the presentations were
finalised. The hole is perhaps one of the best in the area to watch a hole
in one from the elevated tee, which added greatly to Yasuo’s pleasure in
completing this lifetime first event.
Back at The Haven there was an extra surprise in store
for Yasuo as he was presented with the first IPGC Hole in One golf bag. This
was the first of a series of bags that will be presented to every member,
who when playing in an official IPGC competition, from any of the IPGC
venues completes a hole in one.
Before making the presentations Stephen Beard welcomed
new member Nobuyuki Nakagomi and also welcomed back Kinya Akiyama, Masamoto
Kuramochi, Benny Hansen, Danny Greer and Warren Gallop.
There was also an empty handed farewell for Alastair
Skene.
Wednesday, July 20, Khao Kheow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Al Rolnik (19) 42pts
2nd Barry Winton (5) 38pts
3rd Yukio Kikuchi (20) 34pts
4th Rodney Hayes (10) 33pts
5th Nobuyuki Nakagomi (28) 29pts
6th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 29pts
Once again Al Rolnik strode to the top of the leader
board but today was head and shoulders above the rest of the field, winning
by a clear 4 points from the inform Barry Winton, who could not be blamed
for being a little disappointed not to get back on to the top step having
returned a very good two under handicap on arguably one of the toughest
courses currently being played, with the next nearest contestant being a
further four shots adrift.
This underlines what a great round Al Rolnik put in to
finish at six under handicap and it can be greatly attributed to Al’s
application in playing within his handicap limits and refusing to take on
chancy or speculative shots and utilizing his handicap strokes to their full
extent when considering the best shot to play to the green.
Yukio Kikuchi, whilst not quite up to scratch still, is
playing very near to handicap and this time finished well enough to take
third place ahead of Rodney Hayes who still cannot quite get back to the
handicap level to which he was once accustomed as he can often be heard
telling his chums in the bar but it is all seemingly falling on deaf ears
where the handicapper is concerned.
Nobuyuki Nakagomi won a very low key count-back from
Shuichi Kodaka with a better 15 to 12 over the inward half, which on this
day was the North course.
Barry Winton took the first division 2’s pool while Mark
Armstrong took the second division, as they both slipped in their putts on
the 179 yard 3rd on the C course which with the pin
tucked away on the right, made them no easy feats.
Prior to the presentations Frank McGowan was welcomed
back.
Friday, July 22,
The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Yukio Kikuchi (20) 37pts
2nd Barry Winton (5) 34pts
3rd Yasuo Suzuki (8) 33pts
4th Kinya Akiyama (8) 33pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (14) 32pts
Yukio Kikuchi at last took the top spot after coming
close in competitions from quite a few different venues and will return home
a little happier than when he arrived after a very good golfing holiday in
the Pattaya area.
Barry Winton took his second runner up placing in the
week with yet another solid round that was still not quite good enough to
stop his handicap rising anther 0.1 as he once again ended the day outside
his 1 shot buffer zone, but with one good score in the week he just managed
to stay at the level at which he started the week.
Yasuo Suzuki, still getting over the excitement of the
events earlier in the week, but now sporting a sparkling new golf bag
complete with freshly cleaned and polished clubs with which to set it off,
just about took third place needing a better count-back of 15 to 14 to see
off the challenge of Kinya Akiyama.
Trevor Schirmer rounded out the honourable mentions
another shot back in fifth.
Trevor Schirmer took the first division 2’s pool as the
second division remained unclaimed.
Back at The Haven there were farewells for Kinya Akiyama,
Masamoto Kuramochi, Nobuyuki Nakagomi and Yukio Kikuchi.
Note: As from the 1st of July the Haven group is departing Soi 13 at the
earlier time of 9 am until further notice. If you would like to play with
The Haven group you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel
at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All

French lesson at Chonburi
IPGC golf from the Pattaya Golf Society
The Pattaya Golf Society made a relatively rare visit to
Century Chonburi on Monday, 18th July, betting on the hope that the local
Thai golfers would be “golfed out” after three consecutive Buddha holidays.
So it was!
The course was empty when the group teed off, early of
course, and a pleasantly warm day provided the ideal ambience for the
stableford competition. The course was in good condition with only the
bunkers giving cause for concern and the greens were slow by comparison with
others in the area. The excellent design calls for accuracy, not length and
the winner, France’s Jean Morel, gave everyone a lesson in how to play the
course as he took 38 points from the track, leaving Masanori Takano and Don
Nellis to share second place with 36 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and local hero Wichai
Tananusorn had a round to forget as he rejoined the group after a month in
UK. However Garry Hookey received the Booby Bevy for being the only golfer
back at the presentation not to register at least thirty points on his card.
Some may mock Century Chonburi but on the day it was the
perfect venue for the Pattaya Golf Society.
Masters in charge
at Pattaya
The Pattaya Golf Society made the short journey to
Pattaya County Club on Wednesday, 20th July to play a stableford competition
on the local course. It was reasonably prepared and the dry fairways
provided the golfers with a lot of run even though they were starting to get
bare in patches. The greens were quick and it was refreshing to see that the
club has adopted a policy of putting non-assigned caddies to work dressing
the bunkers around the course.
The scene was therefore set for a good tight competition
and that is what ensued. Sharing third place were the Alan Duckett and Mr
Len who finished with 36 points, only one behind Masa Takano who again
carded the best gross score of the day, a fine 79. The winner was Peter
Masters whose diligence and patience are always tested these days and his 39
points was a good reward for his efforts.
Don Nellis recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day on the
tasty sixteenth and the Booby Bevy went to Haruyuki Kato for blowing away
his chances after a level par front nine off the sticks degenerated into a
catalogue of errors on the back nine.
The group had enjoyed a stress free day, completing their
rounds in less than four hours at Pattaya C.C. and the largest field for a
few weeks helped the day go well.
