Sunday, June 26, Green
Valley - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Russell Exley (7) 38pts
2nd Joe McArdle (11) 36pts
3rd Alec Hoare (17) 34pts
4th Mark Armstrong (26) 34pts
Sunday Golf at Green Valley continues to be good value
for the weekends when with the use of special vouchers the green fee can be
obtained at the same rate as the management currently asks for a weekday
competition, and is the reason the group continues to play the course at
weekends but not during the week.
Having recently had a Thailand Junior Amateur competition
at the course it is in quite good condition but not so good as to warrant
paying double for a green fee compared with similar courses in the area.

Russell Exley.
Russell Exley took the day’s top spot with a solid two
under handicap that ensured he will tee it up for the following week one
lower and back to his lowest level, and now expects to continue the trend in
the coming weeks.
Joe McArdle slipped into second place with a level
handicap round to take with him back to Ireland to where he is returning for
a short break away from the stresses of Pattaya, leaving his old chum Alec
Hoare to secure third by virtue of a better count-back of 18 to 16 against
Mark Armstrong.
Despite the good scores on the day there were no 2’s.
Monday, June 27, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Rod Crosswell (14) 33pts
2nd Yasuo Suzuki (11) 32pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (14) 32pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 30pts
5th Rodney Hayes (10) 30pts
Following heavy overnight rain the course was playable
but, with absolutely no run on the fairways, it was extremely difficult to
score even though the greens were in tip top condition and the overall
appearance excellent.

Tom McCarthy.
The scores bore out the degree of difficulty and the
day’s event was determined as non-counting for upward review for handicap
purposes, with the Competition Standard Scratch moving out to 75.
Rod Crosswell made it a happy au revoir, as he played his
last round prior to returning to Australia for a short work break before
returning to Pattaya a little later in the year, returning an over par score
but with a sufficiently good enough card to claim first place just one ahead
of the stumbling pack.
Yasuo Suzuki held off a determined challenge from Trevor
Schirmer winning a count-back with a better 17 to 16, therefore taking
second place and leaving Trevor in third.
Shuichi Kodaka was also involved in a count-back for
fourth and fifth against Rodney Hayes, which he duly won with a slightly
better 15 to 14.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Trevor
Schirmer slipped in two, to clean up the first division.
Wednesday, June 29,
Phoenix - Monthly Medals
CSS74
Division 1
1st Yasuo Suzuki (11) net 70
2nd Barry Winton (5) net 78
3rd Rodney Hayes (10) net 82
Division 2
1st Tom McCarthy (20) net 71
2nd Rod Howett (23) net 79
3rd Mark Armstrong (26) net 79
Under overcast skies and cooled by a steady breeze
throughout the day, conditions for golf could not have been better and
allied to a well prepared and nicely manicured Mountain and Ocean courses,
playing from the blue tees in the Monthly Medals became almost a pleasure.
The only blot on the day was the condition of the greens on the Mountain
nine which were well below the usual standard that would normally be
expected, and some of the Ocean greens where parts should really have been
declared GUR. But all in all it was a very good day for golf and well
appreciated by all the competitors.

Yasuo Suzuki.
Yasuo Suzuki, who is definitely having a purple patch,
took yet another win to add to his recent haul with an extremely good round
of golf that left the rest of the first division floundering in his wake,
with the nearest some eight strokes adrift, and taking his first Medal for
the year and thus ensuring that he will be contesting the Gold and Silver
Medals at the end of the year and in the process recording the best score in
the Medals of the year so far.
Barry Winton was strangely off tune during the front
nine, the Mountain course, which could have been attributed to the greens,
but did well enough over the inward half to push Rodney Hayes into third as
Rodney also struggled with the course and an unusually off day with the
putter as Barry came in with a strong finish over the closing holes.
The second division was also won with a record score for
the year and by the same eight stroke margin by first time medal winner Tom
McCarthy, small c big C if you don’t mind, and will go in pride of place
next to his Campaign Medal for Afghanistan when he returns to the USA and
also gets him into the Gold and Silver competition if he can get the extra
time off later in the year.
Rod Howett claimed second place with a better count-back
of 33.5 ahead of the seemingly perennial bridesmaid Mark Armstrong, who
could only garner 37 coming home.
Allowing for the length that the course played it was
unsurprising that there were no 2’s from either division.
Before the presentations there was a welcome back to
playing for Stephen Beard, although the playing part may have been an
exaggeration.
Friday, July 1, Rayong
C.C. - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Yasuo Suzuki (11) 40pts
2nd Barry Winton (5) 38pts
3rd Tom McCarthy (20) 35pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 34pts
5th Mark Armstrong (26) 33pts
6th John Squitiero (18) 33pts
With many of the local courses designating the day as a
holiday, which it was for some of the local banks, it was a very pleasant
surprise to find the Rayong management had come up with a very well
appreciated green fee of 350 baht, which allied to a 250 baht caddy fee,
made it a very reasonable sum for a day’s golf over a quite an acceptable
course.
Although the course was a little untidy in places the
greens were true and flat and the general condition was very playable as the
scores attested to in the final analysis. The management had also come up
with a very good price for the golf carts which were priced at 400 baht for
two people sharing and just 300 baht for a single player which added to the
value for the day.
Yasuo Suzuki was once again found to be in sparkling form
as he strolled round in four under handicap and ensuring a two shot drop for
the ensuing week’s competitions on his way to yet another win, making it two
and a close second in the week, and it was a pleasure for all to have the
opportunity to have a couple of drinks on Yasuo at the post match
celebrations during the week.
Barry Winton was again the runner-up after playing some
very nice golf and taking just 35 gross to complete the back nine, finishing
with a 75 gross and looking as if he will soon be back to his old form
following his recent back operation.
Tom McCarthy also had another good round to add to his
fine effort a couple of days earlier as he took third place ahead of Shuichi
Kodaka by a single point.
Mark Armstrong was again in the mix as he slipped into
fifth spot just in front of John Squitiero winning the count-back by 17 to
16.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but
Yasuo Suzuki knocked one in to claim the first division which included a
rollover.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome back for John
Squitiero.
Note: As from the 1st of July the Haven group will
depart Soi 13 at the earlier time of 9 am until further notice. If you would
like to play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call

Henshaw at the double
Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday’s winners: Yui Bietry and Adam Oyston.
Sunday, June 26, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Yui Bietry (10) 39pts
2nd Colin Davis (15) 37pts
B Flight
1st Adam Oyston (18) 39pts
2nd Kathy Doody (17) 38pts
Near Pins: No 4 Bill Peach, No 9 Sim Davis, No 12
Terry Mangan, No 16 Yui Bietry.
It is well known that Green Valley is the tacit home of
the society on Sundays and has been for over ten years, so how on earth was
it that a four-ball managed to end up at Phoenix? T. I. T.
Those that did manage to find the right venue found the
course in excellent shape with conditions that suited both the lads and the
ladies.
A Flight was won by the ever consistent Yui Bietry with a
co-woman of the match, carding an excellent 39 points. Yui dragged the
Donkey up the podium steps as he finished two shots adrift. A special
mention to Simon Spalding whose even par round was the card of the day
considering he played of scratch!
In contrast Bob Newel’s card does not warrant any mention
as it contained five no-scoring holes, and that is exactly what it is going
to get, but to be fair his card did have a ‘2’ penciled in.
Adam Oyston, no stranger to the dizzy heights of the top
of the podium, matched Yui’s card to top the junior flight, also posting 39
points. Kathy Doody added a further bit of glamour to the prize giving as
she finished one stroke back for the silver.
Yui Bietry, Terry Mangan, Adam Oyston and Bob Newell
shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, June 28, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
1st Terry Mangan (11) 33pts
2nd Scott Bramley (22) 33pts
3rd Eddy Beilby (16) 33pts
It was a tough day for the society at five times British
Open winner Peter Thompson’s designed Greenwood. Three players top scored
with 33 points, the resulting count-back deemed Terry ‘the silent assassin’
Mangan the winner, Scott Bramley gained the silver, leaving Eddy the Eagle
to tidy up the flight. Mind you, the lads were not complaining as the loot
spends just as well.
The biggest grin of the day belonged to Eddy the Eagle as
he had the only ‘2’.
Wednesday, June 29, Pattana - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (15) 39pts
2nd Stuart Roche (16) 37pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (17) 36pts
2nd Eddie Delaney (28) 35pts
Colin the Donkey was at it again on Wednesday cajoling
and ball dogging the field on the Pattana B+C layout, and that was the
nicest thing he did to them all day as he came home with a match winning and
A Flight top spot. Stuart Roche filled the flight a couple of strokes back.
There was plenty of drama in the junior flight as the
Irish duo of Peter ‘the red hot’ Henshaw faced up to his old mate Eddie
Delany. The last time these two played together if my memory serves me right
it was last Friday and it was Eddie who stood atop the podium looking down
on Peter. Those who know Peter also know that this feat rarely happens twice
and today was no exception as Peter extracted his revenge.
Co. Wiclow’s Jimmy ‘where’s me mate’ Day cheered up a
little as his solo ‘2’ took the pot.
Friday, July 1,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
White Flight
1st Adam Farrell (12) 37pts
2nd Keith McLachlan (24) 35pts
3rd Gordon Wallace (15) 34pts
Yellow Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (17) 35pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (18) 33pts
It was pick your tee day at Treasure Hill, and it was
Adam Farrell who did the best work off the White tees as evidenced by his
match winning 37 points. Adam was also the only competitor to better his
handicap. Adam was two strokes clear of Keith McLachlan, and a further
stroke clear of Gordon Wallace. Former Treasure Hill caddie Sim ‘card’ Davis
showed she is finding form and was just one shot of a podium place.
Peter ‘the red hot’ Henshaw made it two top podium
finishes on the trot as he led a smaller group home off the more forgiving
yellow tees. Peter’s 35 points was two shots clear of a tandem of Eddy ‘the
Eagle’ and Co. Wicklow’s Terry ‘the silent assassin’ you know who, with the
scales tipping in the Eagle’s favour.
The Headline committee usually saves the headline for the
Sunday knock but it was decided that Peter’s splendid double flight win was
the highlight of the week and warranted a change.
The Donkey and the Eagle split the ‘2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is

Flor floats in for monthly award
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Thomas Cotton
Tuesday, June 28, Laem Chabang - Stableford
Now that the celebrated slow season has arrived in
Thailand, residents and the cognoscenti who vacation here now, can really
enjoy golf at reduced green fees without the crowds in favourable weather
conditions. So those anointed but impecunious few could now afford to play
at Laem Chabang, one of the more beautiful courses in this part of Thailand.
Except, that is, Mashi, who had some serious objection to the venue and took
the day off. Well, that was encouraging news, since it gave somebody else a
chance to win!
It was fine and not too hot and we played off the white
tees. Using carts enabled your reporter to catch the odd wink between holes
and recover from the jet-lag, having just returned from a trip to
Scandinavia. Occasionally he was roused from his slumber by his playing
partners Mick and Nigel, alas, to leave behind dreams of svelte Danish
beauties biking through Copenhagen. This day was the last playing day of the
month, so the event at which “Golfer of the Month” was to be determined.
Joel Flor was in contention and otherwise the field was open, as Mashi had
had all his best rounds elsewhere (another reason why he was no-show).
So after-play, when we were back at Bert’s, awaiting
Joel’s return from the nearby entertainment venue, we were presented the
results by Dick Warberg, captain in Derek’s absence. Joel’s second place
finish was enough to win him “Golfer of the Month”, for which he was duly
awarded another Mizuno bag to add to his swelling collection.
Near Pins on the day went to Mick O’meara, Nigel Perry,
Jack Ekelmans and John Binns.
1st Thomas Cotton 37pts
2nd Joel Flor 36pts
3rd Dick Warberg 36pts
4th Daryl Evans 36pts

Hatton keeps his hat on
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Tuesday’s top three with the staff from The Relax
Bar.
Mike Gerrard
With most of the courses undergoing maintenance work at
this time of the year we decided to try a different course last Friday and
went to Emerald. This is usually one of the better courses in the area and
certainly one of the best designed, however due to their maintenance
programme it was a disappointment to see half the greens heavily sanded and
the fairways left uncut for a week or so.
So, it was really nice to get back to the lush fairways
and now, ever improving greens at Phoenix. Today, Tuesday June 28, was
possibly one of the hottest days of the year and many of our stalwarts
decided to take a cart. Even then it was very sultry and humid. After nine
holes of sweat and suffering I decided to take a cart for the back nine.
However it did not help my game.
There are some bad points about some of the management
policies at Phoenix, but at least you can take a cart for nine holes and
even two players can share for half the price each.
The bad point today was that they had a large number of
players, 90 in all, booked by the Fairways golf tournament and had closed
one of the nines the day before, thus creating a very slow day for some of
the three-ball groups behind them.
So onto today’s scores and it was no surprise then to see
one of the cart riding players return the best score. Today we were playing
for the prestigious Trattoria Italiana voucher and thus scoring was by way
of stroke play. Ken Hatton just edged into first place with a net 72
followed by Bob Neylon with a net 73 and then closely followed by the ever
consistent Clive Robinson with a net 74 (gross 79). However, jet lagged
Stuart Gordon claimed third spot by default due to Clive not being able to
return for the presentation.
Only two near pins today and they went to Ted Oreton and
Stuart Gordon.
The owners of The Relax Bar duly donated our regular
lucky draw prizes and they were awarded to John Bartley (again?), Phil
Kington and Adam Wathen.
We play every Tuesday and Friday at about noon, and
Friday’s green fee is 1,000 baht as a guest of the members who play. Anyone
interested please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for more information about
our golf and the subsidiary sea fishing club we run as well.

Stafford stars at St. Andrews
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Friday’s winners from St.
Andrews, Lloyd Shuttleworth and John Stafford, pose for a photo with Suzi
Lawton and Gary Hogg.
Monday, June 27, Burapha -
Stableford
Twenty-five Outbackers played the A & B nines from the
blues today and perfect weather for golf, no rain but lots of cloud cover,
kept the temperature relatively cool. The course was in good condition,
however, if you got into the rough you were in big trouble and the greens
were generally good although a little varied in speed,
It was welcome back to Rod Woodriffe, who we haven’t seen
for a while and welcome also to Dave Whitfield playing with us for the first
time.
The Roo Cup was an all Kiwi affair today as the previous
holders, Capt’ Bob & Lloyd Shuttleworth wanted it back from the current
holders, John Low and Dion Lane. Well, poor old John and Dion walked into a
hot Lloyd as he alone was level par gross after sixteen, enough to secure
the Roo, with the Capt’ chipping in his bit here and there. Lloyd went on to
bogey the last two holes to finish up with the day’s top score (42pts) and
win Div A by three. Owen Walkley, who seems to be often in the shake up, was
second with 39 followed in by Steve Mann with 38.
Div B was headed by Bruce Milner on 36 points, just one
point ahead of Andrew Makara (35) and two ahead of Ivan Plunkett (34) in
third.
There were some great scores in today, particularly in
Div A, and using our pilot handicap system the computer calculated that the
course played one shot easier than par. It’s going to take a little getting
used to having a H’cap Index resulting one’s playing handicap changing from
course to course but that is one of the fundamental advantages of this
system (EGA) and the USGA systems, if applied correctly.
There were nine ‘2’s - five on hole 3 from Ian Heddle,
Greg Hill, Gary Hogg, Bob Philp & Owen Walkley; one on hole 6 from Bruce
Milner and three more on hole 12 from Neil Hurd, Gary Hogg and John Low.
Div A (0-15)
1st Lloyd Shuttleworth (8/Hi6.2)
42pts
2nd Owen Walkley (12/Hi9.8) 39pts
3rd Steve Mann (13/Hi10) 38pts
4th John Cunningham (10/Hi7.8)
36pts
Div B (16+)
1st Bruce Milner (17/Hi13.7) 36pts
2nd Andrew Makara (32/Hi25.8) 35pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (25/Hi19.9) 34pts
4th Bob Lindborg (23/Hi18.6) 32pts
Tuesday, June 28, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
A bit of a slow old day for the 18 Outbackers here at
Pattaya, caused mainly by a five-ball stuck in front of our leading groups.
On top of that, the white tee markers had mostly been moved to the back tees
making the course play three shots tougher than par but handing the girls a
massive advantage. Sure enough, they filled the top two places with Orn on
38 and Laong with 36 and the best of the boys was Doug Chalkley’s 34, which
was pretty good really.
The course was in reasonable nick with still a lot of
repair work going on with the bunkers and white tee boxes and two or three
greens have not yet fully recovered from their seasonal maintenance
programme.
There was a ‘jackpot 2’ from Owen Walkley on hole 5,
which must have been just about all he got right, looking at his score, no
offence mate!
1st Orn Kansaengsri (20/Hi18.2)
38pts
2nd Laong O’Neill (30/Hi27.1) 36pts
3rd Doug Chalkley (23/Hi22.4) 34pts
4th Amarjit Banwaitt (5/Hi6.4)
31pts
5th Dion Lane (10/Hi10.6) 30pts
Wednesday, June 29,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
Fourteen Outbackers travelled to Treasure Hills, our last
visit here being in March. The course continues to improve and the staff are
to be congratulated on the work they are doing on the tees, the fairways and
surrounds but they have neglected the greens. The greens have been cored and
sanded within the past month and some have not quite recovered as they were
very slow and bumpy and most have not been cut.
The course itself is a great test of golf and we played
off the yellow tees, although some of them were well forward.
Unfortunately for the Outbackers, management at Treasure
Hills is sadly lacking and they sent off a five-ball, all walking, in front
of our first group and the five-ball refused to call any of our groups
through until the 15th hole where they stopped for a
drink. Maybe it’s about time courses in Pattaya adopted the policy of some
of the courses in Hua Hin, by banning 5 balls!!
The best score returned for the day was 40 points by
Brian Maddox off his 21 handicap; second was Hoggy with 38 off 7, and third
was Paul Bourke with 35 off 12.
There were three ‘2’s for the day going to Hoggy, Steve
Mann and Bernie Stafford.
1st Brian Maddox (21/Hi19.2) 40pts
2nd Gary Hogg (/7Hi7.3) 38pts
3rd Paul Bourke (12/Hi11.5) 35pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (19/Hi17.9)
33pts
5th George Bishop (15/Hi14.6) 33pts
Friday, July 1, St.
Andrews – Stableford
With Khao Kheow hosting a major tournament, the Outback
took a trip to St Andrews for a change. However, the weather had other ideas
as there had been heavy rain overnight and it was still bucketing down at
breakfast in the bar, even though in Pattaya it was only a light drizzle.
One group plus one rained themselves off before the start, the remaining 19
deciding to give it their best shot. In reality, on the course it wasn’t
that bad at all, as eventually the rain cleared away.
Apart from ourselves, there were few players about,
leading to good quick rounds of under four hours for the leading groups but
the condition of the front nine greens was atrocious! It appeared as though
they were pretty dead in places and had been scarified into 25mm squares,
making the putting a complete farce; on the back nine there were four or
five which were good before the finishing holes returned to similar
condition to those on the front.
From John Stafford’s point of view, it was probably just
as well he missed so many putts, otherwise he would have won by an even
greater margin as he took the course apart with his comfortable 44 points,
ten clear of second placed Suzi in Div B and seven clear of Lloyd
Shuttleworth, the winner of Div A.
Lloyd was followed in by Raji who had come out of the
traps like a greyhound, scoring 23 points on the front nine (that is 2 under
gross) but could only manage 13 points on the back.
Geoff Christie has every right to feel robbed by the
greens as he came very close to scoring ‘2’s on all four par threes, no mean
feat but two of them went in and Gary Hogg also had a ‘2’.
Div A (0-13)
1st Lloyd Shuttleworth (6/Hi5.4)
37pts
2nd Amarjit Banwaitt (7/Hi6.5)
36pts
Div B [14+]
1st John Stafford (22/Hi20.7) 44pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (17.Hi16.1) 34pts

Van Dyk and Evans do the business
PSC golf from The Cafe Kronborg

The Drut
Monday, June 27, Bangpra –Stableford
Fifteen golfers set off from the Cafe’ Kronborg at 0815
hours and arrived at the course forty minutes later. The first group who
teed off at 0940 hours under overcast skies and in warm conditions completed
the journey in four hours and fifteen minutes. After nine holes a cooling
breeze arrived, however for the first time in many moons the monkeys were
not in attendance.
Prior to tee off San Mig Stu, a last start winner and one
day off his 58th birthday, commented that the game is
too easy and there must be a way to toughen it up. Time would tell.
The course was in good condition and the greens quicker
than a Fremantle Dockers Football Club second half capitulation.
We welcomed Martin Todd from Western Australia and said
hoo roo to Jan Lovgreen and Niels Hansen prior to their return to Denmark.
In the A flight Andre Van Dyk shot a personal best of
eighty off the stick for a sensational forty three points and first place.
Second with a solid thirty six points was Stu Rifkin and Niels Hansen
rounded out the flight with thirty three points for third.
Martin Todd, who scored thirty two points to miss a
podium place, reckoned he was the unluckiest golfer since Boof Watkins three
jabbed the last 12 greens to get rolled on a count-back for the 1988 July
Monthly Mug at the Gosnells Golf Club in Perth Western Australia.
In the B flight Daryl Evans had a runaway win with a PB
eighty six off the stick and forty one points. Runner up was Andrew Krawiec
with a solid thirty nine points and Nigel Perry reversed his Coveted Compass
Cap effort at his previous start to hand in thirty five points and finish
third.
A Flight (0–16)
1st Andre Van Dyk (15) 43pts
2nd Stu Rifkin (16) 36pts
3rd Niels Hansen (12) 33pts
B Flight (17+)
1st Daryl Evans (19) 41pts
2nd Andrew Krawiec (21) 39pts
3rd Nigel Perry (22) 35pts
Mike Winfield won his inaugural Coveted Compass Cap and
Deefa as usual collected more donations for charity and all who contributed
are thanked once again.
Thursday, June 30,
Plutaluang –Stableford
Twelve golfers buttered up for today’s action with a
sense of anticipation not experienced since a group of cannibals were
observed salivating watching plump missionaries disembarking from their
canoes somewhere in the Congo.
Playing the East and South nines under overcast skies and
with a cool breeze present the leading group completed the journey in four
hours and twenty minutes.
Kevin Dinan managed to make it to the course on the
correct day which delighted the organisers.
The course was in good condition however the scribe is
loathe to comment on the condition of the greens as it is possible local
authorities may invoke section 169/170 of the criminal code.
One right handed folically challenged golfer who recently
purchased two gloves only to realise they were for a left hander indicated
that he was going to blitz the field now that the situation had been
rectified with the correct equipment. This was a very big call that would be
answered one way or the other within a few hours.
In the A flight Stu Rifkin scored thirty seven points to
win and relegate Martin Todd into second place on a count-back whilst Mike
Gosden rounded it out with thirty three points.
In the B flight Hugh O’Donnell handed in a solid thirty
six points to finish atop the podium. Second went to Kevin Dinan with thirty
four points and last start Coveted Compass Cap winner Mike Winfield with
thirty one points made it into third place.
Alas the folically challenged one did not win.
A Flight (0–20)
1st Stu Rifkin (16) 37pts
2nd Martin Todd (8) 37pts
3rd Mike Gosden (11) 33pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Hugh O’Donnell (21) 36pts
2nd Kevin Dinan (24) 34pts
3rd Mike Winfield (21) 31pts
The Coveted Compass Cap was won by Alan Traneker and Deefa was delighted
to snavel a few shekels from the gathered throng and they are thanked for
their contributions.

Count-backs abound at Fairways monthly
PSC golf from The Fairway Golf Society

B Flight winner Frank
Riley.
Tuesday, June 28,
Phoenix - Phoenix
There were 94 golfers participating in today’s
tournament which is a fantastic turn out for this time of year. It was
also nice to see a few more lady entrants. Unfortunately we had problems
at the start due to the staff allowing a Korean six-ball to tee off just
ahead of us. Fortunately we got the management to send out a marshal and
split them up into two three-balls, so it took a few holes before we
started to move along at a comfortable pace.

A Flight winner Chris
Brendle.
At the turn it looked like there was going to be a
host of low scores as so many players were well under par. It really
looked like 40 plus points would take the honours, but it appeared that
they could not keep the momentum going. Even so the scoring was of a
very high standard.
Two of the divisions were decided on count-back with
Kevin McIntosh losing out 21-19 to Chris Brendle in the A Flight while
Bob Crawford lost out to John Hadden in the C Flight, 18-17.
The shot of the day came from Danny Larson whose tee
shot on the par-three 16th pitched just one inch from the hole and
stayed there when all it needed was a one ball revolution to give him
the acclaimed hole in one.
The next monthly tournament will be held at Green
Valley on Tue 26th July.

C Flight winner John
Haddon.
Today’s technical prizes were awarded as follows:
(Long putts) Mike Ryder & Nicky Clow. (Long drives) Ning Neal, Jonny
Larson, Kevin McIntosh, Noi Emerson, Steve Harrison & Briny Cristie.
(Near pin in three shots) Briny Christie, Richard Hurley, Willi
Buschmann & Tony Dauth. (Near pin in two shots) Jon Lay, Danny Larson,
Mark Reid, Richard Hurley, Chris Brendle (2). (Near pins) Henry Wong,
Willi Buschmann, Pepo Frick, On Sadok, Gunnar Morero & Danny Larson.
A Flight (0-13)
1st Chris Brendle 39pts
2nd Kevin McIntosh 39pts
3rd Jeff Calrow 38pts
B Flight (14-18)
1st Frank Riley 39pts
2nd Werner 38pts
3rd Willi Buschmann 37pts
C Flight (19-up)
1st John Haddon 38pts
2nd Bob Crawford 38pts
3rd Nicky Clow 37pts
Ladies
1st Yuza 39pts
2nd Ning Neal 37pts
The order of merit leader in the men’s division is
Werner, closely followed by Mark Reid, while the ladies leader is Noi
Emerson.
Friday, July 1,
Crystal Bay – Stableford
Once again we were very lucky with the weather as it
was raining all the way to the course. We decided to take a chance and
start in the rain and fortunately it stopped after a couple of holes.
The scoring was prolific today with a three-way tie
for first place; Patrick Engles winning with 22 points on the back nine
to 20 & 19 from his closest rivals. The handicapper should have a field
day with the scissors with these three.
Near pins went to Rob Davis, Patrick Engles, John
Coetzee & John Haddon.
1st Patrick Engles (17) 42pts
2nd Nicky Clow (28) 42pts
3rd Frank Riley (18) 42pts
Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society
is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and plays

Murphy makes it three is a row

Diana Seniors and Ladies
winners for June: (from left) Chris John, Lamduan Keddie, Terry Marney and
Rich Murphy
Nigel Canon
With just 12 players (11 men and 1 lady) this month’s
Diana Seniors & Ladies Open on June 30 was an overall competition. The
course at Pattaya Country Club was in great shape and the weather was cloudy
and hot.
With a near empty course and all arriving early the 3
groups were away well before time and back in about 4 hours.
Two new players joined us today – Terry Marney and
Lamduan Keddie, and we were pleased to welcome back Arthur Bailey who has
been off with a bout of ill health.
In first place with a fine 40 points was Rich Murphy (23)
- his third win in a row! In second place was PCC member and regular Diana
player Chris John (21) with 34 points, and just a point behind was Terry
Marney (26) with 33 points.
Near pins went to Chris John on hole 5 and Mike Coleman
on hole 7. The ladies near pin went to our only lady Lamduan Keddie for
being nearest the green! Hole 16 remained unclaimed!
Alan Pearce calculated the results allowing the
presentation to take place soon after the last group came in. All scores are
submitted to Pattaya Sports Club.
The next Diana Seniors and Ladies open is on Thursday
28th July at Pattaya Country Club with a tee time of 0900.
Sign up sheets are at Diana Green Bottle on 2nd
road and the Diana Driving range.

Allan’s birthday splash
The Backyard Golf Society

The garishly attired golfers
assemble for a group photo at Emerald.
Alan’s 60th birthday bash started
with the heavens opening up at the Emerald Golf Course on Friday, July 1. We
all hid in the club house sheltering from the rain for about an hour and a
half until the weather subsided into a drizzle. We decided we had to go for
it so we all set off in a collection of garish outfits (Alan’s idea to
brighten up the day).
It was extremely heavy going and after 9 holes everybody
came in soaking wet apart from 3 hardy souls who went on to do the full 18.
Afterwards everybody adjourned to Ban Chang where Alan presented a number of
wonderful golf prizes that he had donated for the day.
Top scorer of the day was Tony D, with Neville coming in
a close second followed by Harry V in third and ‘Broken Wing’ fourth.
‘Broken Wing’ also got a special prize of an Odyssey putter for the
worst/best outfit of the day.
A special thanks to Tip at Mama’s Bar for a great buffet,
especially the ribs and lastly a big thank you to Alan for putting on a
great day.

Chris Voller scores a brace
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, June 27, Mountain
Shadow - Stableford
There was only one division out today and a warm welcome
back to Ted Morris. It was a cool and pleasant day and as always the course
was in reasonable condition, but the greens not as fast as they have been
over the last couple of visits here.
Ted won the day with 35 points and there were three
players in with 34 points contesting the next two places; Gordon Everingham
finished second after his 21 points on the back nine, Chris Voller was third
with 17 and the Frenchman lost out with a meagre score of 15 on the
count-back.
Ted and Nick Payne shared the ‘2’s in division 1 after
birdies on the 15th and 17th and a rollover in division 2 to Bangpra on
Wednesday.
Wednesday, June 29,
Bangpra - Stableford
Back to reality, five groups out and of course two
divisions for the men. The first hole here has been reverted to the original
green but this is not a problem. It was a very gloomy sky as we drove down
the 7 to this course, but the threatening skies disappeared and it was
another perfect day weather wise.
The cut today was 6-18 in division 1 and 19+ plus in
division 2 and in form yet again with the best score of the day and winning
division 1, Chris Voller, playing off 7, won with 37 points. Eric
Reginiussen took second one point behind after beating Andy Baber on an
18/15 back nine count-back.
Just arrived back from the land of Oz, Terry Redding won
division 2 with 30 points while count-back Burnie, as always, beat Peter
Grant 12/11 on the back nine as they both came in with 29 points.
No ‘2’s today in either division so a rollover to Emerald
next Wednesday due to the Haven’s charity competition at Khao Kheow on
Monday.
Friday, July 1,
Eastern Star - Stableford
There had been heavy rain here in this area for almost a
week and this had improved all the greens except one which still needs a
couple of weeks.
Torrential rain all the way down in the mini bus and as
we arrived it eased and four groups teed off a little later than normal
after a short wait. There was a slight drizzle on the first 7 holes but this
stopped and the rest of the round was played in cool conditions.
On the podium again in the first division, Chris Voller
won with 37 points with Mikael Andersson second 8 points behind.
Jim Lanes 34 points won division 2 with Bryan Priestley
second on 32.
There were no ‘2’s in either division so this is building
up to our Eastern Star Extravaganza on the last Friday of this month.
Another goodbye today to little David Taylor who goes
back to the UK and returns in late November. Details of our week’s trip to
Chang Mai on September 10th are being finalised and will be on the board at
Siam Cats in the next few days.

Mashi wins but
Graham takes the title
PSC golf from The Bunker Bar
Monday, June 27, Pleasant
Valley - Stableford
Alan Sullivan continued his good run by winning again; he
won with 34 points at Khaow Kheow on Friday and went three points better
today to take the spoils. Alan Freeman took the runner up spot while William
Macey came third and won a couple of near pin prizes too.

Mashi Kaneta, right, is
congratulated by PJ Redmond after winning at Green Valley.
1st Alan Sullivan (12) 37pts
2nd Alan Freeman (4) 35pts
3rd William Macey (15) 33pts
Near Pins: Reg Smart, Alan Freeman, William Macey
(2).
Wednesday, June 29, Green
Valley - Stableford
It seems a long time since Mashi won playing with the
Bunker Boys, but he won in style today beating Barry Murnin by four points.
Paul Corner shook off a bit of jet lag to come in third a point behind
Barry.
John Graham left Thailand last weekend but he didn’t need
to play this week to win the golfer of the month trophy, only Tony Robbins
could catch him but Tony had a disappointing couple of games to leave John
way ahead and Tony wouldn’t even ring the bell in John’s absence!
1st Mashi Kaneta (12) 37pts
2nd Barry Murnin (16) 33pts
3rd Paul Corner (17) 32pts
Near Pins: Mashi Kaneta, Barry Murnin, Geoff Hart,
Ken Young.
Friday, July 1,
Crystal Bay - Stableford
A rainy morning put off some of the golfer’s today but
the brave ones who showed up were rewarded with an almost perfect round of
golf. By the time they arrived at Crystal Bay as the rain had stopped and
the temperature was nice and cool.
Bruce Gladden enjoyed himself and won with a fine round
scoring 38 points to beat Mike Corner and Mashi in second and third place
respectively.
1st Bruce Gladden (13) 38pts
2nd Mike Corner (21) 35pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (12) 33pts
Near Pins: Bruce Gladden, Mike Corner, Paul
Corner, Mashi.

Smith has a scorcher
at Phoenix
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar
Monday, June 27, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Keith Worboys (15) 40pts
2nd John Dearden (19) 39pts
3rd Don Bland (5) 38pts
4th Brad Sproxton (12) 37pts
We had 22 players today at Green Valley on a course that
has benefited from the recent rains. On-course maintenance continues, but we
are seeing some improvements. The same can be said for today’s winner Keith
Worboys. Playing 3 times a week at Siam Old Course has his short game in
fine form resulting in a 40 point outing.
John Dearden hit 14 fairways in regulation and that
resulted in a fine 39 points. Don Bland was a smooth as ever firing 4
birdies and finished third with 38 points. ‘Klipboard’ had the usual blob,
blob start but managed to bring it on down the stretch run for 37 points.
Wednesday, June 29,
Phoenix - Monthly Medal
1st Paul Smith (2) net 68
2nd Mark Reid (12) net 69
3rd Gabriel Enright (15) net 70
4th Rogan Hamson (27) net 70
5th John Low (12) net 70
Today’s outing was played at Phoenix and 29 players were
competing for the coveted Monthly Medal champion’s shirt. No less than 5
past champs were in attendance. The eventual winner would be a first timer
in the Medal. Congratulations to Paul Smith who had little trouble with some
brutal putting surfaces. He fired a blistering gross 70 off the stick
resulting in a net 68 and the coveted champion’s shirt.
Mark Reid left too many putts on the lip and finished
with a net 69. Three others were tied on net 70, namely Gabe Enright, John
Low and Rogan Hamson. Only 8 players shot there H/cap or better. There were
plenty of 8’s, 9’s and a few 10’s out there. Thanks to all for attending.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro, off
Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or

Stu’s surge at Pleasant Valley
PGC golf from The Pattaya Golf Society
Monday, 27th June, The Pattaya Golf Society made a
rare visit to Pleasant Valley, the very tight little course just north
of Khao Kheow. Having squeezed a quart into a pint pot on the back nine
the course strategy has to be accuracy, not length and off the blue tees
it was a real challenge as they were shared with the black tees for the
majority of the holes. All this and the monthly medal too!
Starting early on an empty track the group made good
progress and none more so than Peter Masters, initially playing the
first six holes to par off the stick, invigorated by the arrival of the
school hols no doubt. He was then touched on the shoulder by his old
friend, “Mr Sh....”, and his round fell apart.
The Aussie dominated field saw Tony Thorne, Alex Sala
and Phil Knight share second place with net 78 whilst compatriot Stuart
Thompson had the day of his life with a sparkling net 69 giving a long
awaited victory by an unbelievable nine shots.
Stuart shared the ‘2’s pot with Rob Lamond and Alex
Sala who posted three ‘2’s, his fine effort on the twelfth yielding an
eagle for good measure.
The candidates for the Booby Bevy included the
aforementioned Peter Masters and Masaaki Sugaya whose thirteen on the
fifteenth put paid to a good round. However Haruyuki Kato’s place in the
Guinness Book of Records is assured after he recorded only one shot in
his competition round, drawing it to an early conclusion after playing
the wrong ball for his second shot on the first. Altogether a very
pleasant day at Pleasant Valley.
Triple table toppers
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Pattana on
Wednesday, 29th June to play a stableford competition on the B and C
nines under a cloudy sky which occasionally turned showery. The course
was in good condition with the B greens especially fine.
Competition was exceptionally tight with three
players sharing first place. Visitor Anthony Barriente joined Aussie duo
Tony Thorne and Peter Masters on 34 points to take the day.
The only birdie ‘2’ was achieved by Peter Masters on
B3 to guarantee a profitable day for the thirteen handicapper whilst
newbie Yasukazu Ueda took the Booby Bevy in his maiden PGS competition
after playing the full round with the sole of his golf shoe flapping its
way around the course, threatening to become detached at any time. But
the empty course was more than enough to offer enjoyment to the group at
the end of what has been occasionally a quite fraut month at PGS.
Classic Chris
brightens dull day
The Pattaya Golf Society traveled to a stormy and
damp Emerald on Friday, 1st July to play a stableford competition. Storm
clouds were evident all day and a steady downpour just before tee-off
softened the course to an almost quagmire. Only the hardy remained.
In third place was Peter Masters with a creditable 36
points, just one behind Nile Sheehan and Chris Smith, the latter
brightening the day with a sparkling gross 72, giving him 37 points.
Nile and Chris shared the Booby Bevy after their fine
efforts on the fifteenth whilst Peter Masters also took the Booby Bevy
after blowing his chances by bogeying all the par threes.
Elsewhere Nuan Keddle was the pick of the ladies
whilst “Rabbi” hit the lowest score of his short career with the final
round for his starter clubs. His new Taylormades may be the solution he
is seeking to come down the handicap list.
A damp day at Emerald was likely to be the highlight
of a dismal election weekend in Pattaya!

United advance to
next round of Toyota Cup

Ludovick Takam, center, shields the ball from a PTT
Rayong defender during their Toyota Cup match in Rayong, Saturday, July 2.
(Photo/Ariyawat Nuamsawat)
Staff Reporters
Pattaya United were on their travels last weekend as the
‘Dolphins’ made the short trip south to take on PTT Rayong in a qualifying
round of the 2011 Toyota Cup.
Despite currently sitting in fifth place in the first
division, PTT competed fiercely for every ball against their Premier League
opposition and following a goalless first half it was the hosts who took the
lead when Dolphins goalkeeper Vichan Pridaboon made a hash of a shot from
Nares Kapkaikaew, allowing it to slip past him and into the net to put
Rayong one up in the 52nd minute.
United put their opponents under pressure for the
remainder of the half but it wasn’t until the 78th
minute that they were able to garner an equalizer when Sompop Nilawong
converted a cross from Ittiphol Pulsap at the far post.
At fulltime the game remained tied at one-all and so it
was into a half hour of extra time to decide the winner and the luck was
certainly on the side of United in the 114th minute
when Petviset’s speculative shot bounced back off the Rayong crossbar
straight to the feet of Dolphin’s star forward Ludovick who calmly turned
the ball into the net from 5 yards out for the winning goal.
United were due to take on Supanburi at the Supanburi
Sports Arena on Wednesday, July 6 in the next round of the Toyota Cup.

Stuvik finds it tough
going in Hungary

Sandy Stuvik sits in his car in the pit lane at the
Hungaroring circuit just outside Budapest, Sunday, July 3.
Local 16 year old Thai racing prodigy Sandy Stuvik
started his Formula Renault EuroCup round 7 and 8 at the historical
Hungaroring circuit just outside Budapest in Hungary last weekend.
Visiting the famous track for the first time, Sandy
impressed by going 11th fastest in his group in the first practice and
continued doing well, despite struggling to get a good car set up during the
second practice. However, towards the middle of the session the young Thai
driver pushed too hard and spun his car into the wall in the final curve,
damaging both the front and the rear of his race car.
The team mechanics did an outstanding job to get the car
all repaired and ready to go for Saturday mornings qualifying round. The
qualifying began just after rain and again Sandy was struggling for grip on
his car and fell down to 28th of the 36 cars in this massive field, the
largest and most competitive formula grid in Europe.
Starting from 28th Sandy was up four positions already by
the first lap and continued climbing the field until 19th place, one lap
before the end. A nail biting last lap saw the Singha and The Pizza Company
sponsored racer having to relinquish one position and finally taking 20th
place in this race.
A cold and windy mid-summer day welcomed the 8th race in
the EuroCup series last Sunday at Hungaroring. With intermittent slight
drizzle Sandy was hoping for a wet race, as he had struggled all weekend to
find a set-up he could push with. The morning qualifying was though crisp
dry, although unseasonally cold. Sandy pushed as hard as he could, but could
again not make the car go as fast as he needed it to and had to settle for
32nd place on the grid, after his fastest lap was discounted due to an
earlier off track excursion.
Disappointed with the poor qualifying performance, he was
eager to push in the race and as the red lights went out for the race start,
he set off with the field. It would though only last a few corners, before a
car rammed into the rear of his Formula Renault and bent the rear wing
completely out of shape.
Sandy immediately drove into the pit for a check-up and
as he exited the pit, was lucky to find that the Safety Car had been
deployed for a separate incident and he could again catch up to the back of
the grid. On the restart he again began fighting himself up the order and
got up 5 places, before he outbreaked himself, spun and could not get the
engine restarted.
So, after a weekend of intense racing on a very good
circuit, the young driver would return home to Thailand with no points in
the bag. Sandy always knew his first season of European top level formula
racing would be tough, but remains determined to push through and reach his
goals.
