Gold medalist Noppakao receives hero’s welcome in Sattahip
Noppakao
Poonpat, flanked by fellow student teammates from the 2010 Asian Games,
shows off her sailing gold medal in an open topped parade around Sattahip,
Monday, November 29.
Phatcharaphol Panraks
Sattahip residents turned out in force on Monday,
November 29, to welcome home 15-year old sailor Noppakao Poonpat who won a
gold medal in the Optimist dinghy class at the just recently completed 16th
Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
Prasith Luangthong, Director of Singsamut School where
Noppakao studies, school administrators, teachers, lectures and students
were in line to welcome the young sailing star, otherwise known as “Nong
Nine”, before taking her on an honor procession around the city.
Noppakao was joined on the parade by five other students
who represented Thailand at the Asian Games; namely Patheera Mee-yoosamsen,
Narisara Yoosawas, Athiwat Chomthongdee and Tossapol Mahawichien, who all
competed in the sailing and windsurfing categories, and Ransima Nisaisom who
represented the Kingdom in the Taekwondo competition.
Director Prasith said that all Thailand should be proud
of the students who had all performed admirable against more experienced
competitors from other nations.
Noppakao said she was elated to win a gold medal for
Thailand and thanked the Sailing Association of Thailand, Singsamut School,
and last but not least her parents, who have all supported her through her
fledgling sailing career to date.
“One of the proudest moments for me was representing
Thailand at the World Championships in Brazil last year and winning the gold
medal. But this equals it,” said the beaming youngster.
“Both places have strengthened me to gain more experience
and to try and improve further to be up to the world standard (for sailing
competition),” she said, adding that after finishing the Mathayomsueksa
Grade 6, she said she would like to follow in her older sister’s footsteps
and study at the Navy Nursing School in Bangkok.
“Nong Nine” will be heading to Langkawi in Malaysia later
this month to compete in the 2010 World Sailing Championships where she will
be attempting to defend her Optimist title.

FC Nova turn up the heat on Bangkok Masters
MBMG International Casuals League Division 2
FC Nova take on Bangkok Masters at Horseshoe
Point, Saturday, Nov. 27.
In race for the Division Two title, FC Nova continued to
stay one step ahead of the chasing pack, when they comfortably beat the
Bangkok Masters last Saturday, Nov. 27.
Although an 8-nil score line reflects a one sided affair,
it was probably Nova’s poorest performance of the season so far. Without a
fixture for 2 weeks and with a couple of their regular players missing,
coach Stuart Levy rang the changes from the side that took on the Golden
Boys a fortnight ago with veteran journeyman Daryl Mann making his long
awaited return from injury. In all there were eight positional changes from
that game and it did seem to somewhat affect the balance of the side,
however this can be no excuse for their lacklustre first half display in
which they only led by a solitary goal against a masters side at the wrong
end of the table.
The 2.30 pm kick off meant the first half was played in
sweltering heat, and both sides struggled. Nova just could not get their
usual passing game going and they seemed to lack the energy and drive that
has been at the forefront of most of their games this season. They still
created plenty of chances though and on a better day striker Bjorn Ellingsen
could well have had a hat-trick in the first half alone.
One player who did emerge with some credit in the half
was Ellingsen’s strike partner Paul Derbyshire, he looked sharp all game and
it was he who opened the scoring on the half hour, latching on to a Lee
Homer through ball before outstripping the home defence to fire home.
The rest of the half was a forgettable affair with both
sets of players and the few remaining supporters who had not deserted to
watch the ladies rugby on the neighbouring pitch, relieved to hear the half
time whistle.
Coach Levy certainly let his players know what he thought
at half time and there weren’t many that escaped the wrath of his hairdryer
treatment! It must have done the trick, along with a couple of tactical
changes, as Nova looked a totally different side in the second half.
A lot of their game centres around Mark Mckeowen in the
midfield and when he is on fire he sets the pace for the rest of the side to
follow and he put in a bustling second half display.
It was not long into the half that Nova extended their
lead when Derbyshire jinked his way past two Masters defenders before
scoring from the acutest of angles. Man of the match Derbyshire soon
completed his hat-trick with a superbly taken third goal and enhanced his
reputation further as one of the divisions deadliest finisher’s by adding a
fourth soon after.
By this time the Masters had rather given up the ghost
and it looked as if Nova would score with almost every attack. The best goal
of the game soon came when a flowing six man move saw Andrew Robinson
deliver the inch perfect ball for Mckeowen to guide his first time effort
home.
The floodgates were well and truly open and there were
further goals for Sit Namthong, a great solo effort from defender Steve Kerr
and the final goal of the game fell to Thai Nick who tapped the ball in to
the empty net after Ellingsen had seen his effort rebound off the post.
Although they finally won this game with some ease, Coach
Levy and the Nova players certainly know they will have to up their
performance in the coming weeks. They face two tough games before the
Christmas break. This coming Saturday they play the Sportsman at home, 4
p.m. kick off, followed by BSL Youth away in Bangkok the week after.
Also to note, FC Nova’s game against Golden Boys two
weeks ago in which Nova lost 3-1 has been overturned by the league and a 3-0
result awarded to the Pattaya based side after it was found that for the
third time this season the Bangkok side had contravened league rules by
playing unregistered or ineligible players. Although Nova had offered to
replay the game, the league management decided that rules must be adhered to
at all times and the points awarded to Nova. This decision see’s Nova remain
unbeaten in the league having dropped only 2 points from a possible 18.
Jamesons Irish Bar was again the place to be on Saturday
night and the beer was soon flowing as the management and players were seen
happily celebrating another Nova victory!

Team Ambassador cruise past Team Bangkok
The two
teams line up for a group photo at the Ambassador Hotel.
Eddie Blackwell
Squash is yet another sport that has been enjoyed and
played regularly in the Pattaya area for many years on the championship
courts in the Ambassador Hotel, Na. Jomtien. On Saturday, Nov. 27, the
bi-annual squash match between Team Ambassador and Team Bangkok was staged
once again.
Olaf the overpowering got the Ambassador side off to a
positive start by winning 3-0. Stupendous Steve, Captain Eddie, and our only
lady Petite Pooh all lost their opening games but all powered through to win
their matches 3-1. In fact the whole team cruised to beat Team Bangkok 11
matches to 1 with Stunning Stefan being the only loser.
It was a great afternoon at a great venue, followed by an
evening meal for all at the beachside restaurant/hotel The Sea Falcon, close
by at Na Jomtien
The return match against Team Bangkok will be in the
capital in May.
Note: Squash is open to any player at the 8 court

City lose clash of the giants
MBMG International League Div. 1 & 2
Paul Frain
Pattaya City entertained a strong Londoner team at
Horseshoe Point last weekend, the Bangkok outfit being the champions of
2008-09 before been dethroned by City last season. The Londoner came into
the game unbeaten this season with City just behind them and both teams are
determined to remain the powerhouses of the league.
As expected, the game started at a furious pace with
space hard to find and both defenses remaining rock solid. A shot on the
turn was the first effort by the Londoner attack but it was high and wide.
Then a poor clearance by the City defense allowed a Londoner forward half a
chance but he missed the opportunity, which was a warning to the City
defense.
City replied with a beautiful free kick by Dipita but
none of the City forwards took advantage. Chances were very few and far
between and when City’s Fineman’s cleaver dribble left him in front of the
goal, a last desperate tackle saved the day for the Londoner.
City tried with centres across the goal but Londoners
towering giant centre half easily headed them away. From one of these
powerful headers the Londoners broke away and with devastating speed tore
through the City defense for their forward to slot the ball home to make it
1-0, which remained the score at half time.
The pace never relented in the second half and City’s
Craig Banks had a good chance, but misdirected his free header in front of
goal. City continued to press and reverted to through balls down the centre
of the Londoner defense, where one found Ndjanna with the goal at his mercy
but he was tripped from behind and it should have been a clear penalty, but
was not given.
Both teams played as if their lives depended on it with
crunching tackles being hard but fair. A clever passing move by City found
forward Denis Matveev in space and he was upended in the penalty box and
this time a penalty was given. City’s player of the year Patrice Love strode
up and with the keeper stuck to the ground saw his side footed shot go
agonizingly pass the wrong side of the post. When chances are few and far
between, you cannot afford to miss such a chance.
With fifteen minutes to go City were playing their best
football, but the Londoner were having none of it, by just booting the ball
away, time wasting or anything else to relieve the pressure. With only a
couple of minutes left the Londoner broke and should have secured the match,
but with the City players up field a curling cross to their forward was
somehow headed wide in front of goal. When the final whistle went the
Londoner celebrated over a very hard competitive match being the winners by
1 goal to 0.
Meanwhile on the same day the Pattaya City Res drew 1-1
with the Sporting Club in Bangkok. Both Pattaya City teams are playing away
in Bangkok next weekend with a 4 p.m. kick off.

Cooney blitz secures John Preddy Memorial trophy
PSC golf from The Bunker Bar
Monday, Nov. 22,
Bangpakong - Stableford
Well worth the slightly longer trip than usual, to find
the course in excellent condition, and to take advantage of a competitive
green fee. The only problem we find playing here is for those golfers with a
handicap less than 18, with the par 3 holes being rated 15, 16, 17 and 18.
Three of these holes are some of the hardest and longest par 3’s we play,
and can easily spoil an otherwise good round.
Gerry
Cooney holds the John Preddy Memorial Trophy after a fine round of 44 points
at Khao Kheow.
JJ Harney romped away with the honours on the day with an
impressive 40 points, and Roy Dayton also produced a fine round to win the B
Flight.
A Flight
1st JJ Harney (12) 40pts
2nd Neil Jones (10) 38pts
3rd Tony Robbins (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Roy Dayton (22) 38pts
2nd PJ Redmond (20) 36pts
3rd John Hughes (17) 35pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Geoff Parker, Laurence Harding, and Marion

Wednesday, Nov. 17, Khao
Kheow - 5th
John Preddy
Memorial Tournament
A field of 68 golfers set out to contest the 5th
annual John Preddy charity tournament over the A and B nines at Khao Kheow.
Always regarded as a tough course, today it was playing somewhat easier,
with several tees in forward positions, and some excellent scores were
recorded.
Leading the way and taking the John Preddy cup in the
process was Gerry Cooney on 44 points. Laurence Harding took the runner up
trophy, and Reg Smart produced his best round for quite some time to take
third place.
The presentation was held at the U-Too Bar, and what an
excellent buffet they provided for the hungry competitors. The celebrations
carried on until late in the evening and a great day was had by all.
Many thanks to the management and staff of the U-Too Bar
and all proceeds from the event will be donated to Pattaya children’s
charities.
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 44pts
2nd Laurence Harding (17) 43pts
3rd Reg Smart (25) 39pts
4th Duncan Lee (18) 38pts
5th Vincent Smith (10) 38pts
6th Tim Lazereki (27) 38pts
7th Tony Scambler (10) 38pts
8th Nile Sheehan (23) 37pts
9th John Harris (16) 36pts
10th
Geoff Cox (15) 36pts
The team competition (best 3 Stableford scores on each
hole) went to Gerry’s Bandits who returned a total of 125 points
Near pin winners were Colin Stokes and Duncan Lee, the
longest drive went to John McDonald, and the longest putt award to John
Connelly.
Friday, Nov. 26,
Plutaluang – Stableford
Excellent weather for our return to the Navy course, and
although there were some complaints from the usual suspects, the course was
generally in good condition.
Gerry Cooney was cut 3 shots to a 10 handicap following
his fine display on Wednesday, but still managed to produce an excellent
score of 40 points, being narrowly beaten by Tony Scambler in the A Flight.
Bernie Stevens made a welcome return to form winning the
B Flight with 39 points. Marion Melia also had a good day finishing third in
the B Flight, and taking a near pin on her final game before returning to
what promises to be an extremely cold U.K.
A Flight
1st Tony Scambler (10) 41pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (10) 40pts
3rd Ed Graham (9) 39pts
B Flight
1st Bernie Stevens (19) 39pts

Garry and Paul take the Medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Nov. 22, Emerald -
Stableford
CSS 73
1st Ole Stamnes (29) 36pts
2nd Rod Howett (25) 35pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 35pts
4th Peter Skinner (11) 34pts
5th Yasuo Suzuki (10) 33pts
6th Kaneo Watanabe (17) 32pts
7th
Rodney Nabbe (12) 32pts
Clear skies and a cool breeze did not seem to make the
going any easier as only the winner managed to equal his handicap amongst a
good sized field.
Ole Stamnes.
Ole Stamnes ensured that he would be reduced a shot in
handicap with a very tidy round that beat out one of his playing partners
into second place, with Rod Howett taking second by virtue of a count-back
over Shuichi Kodaka with a better 18 to 17 result.
Peter Skinner was once again to be found among the podium
spots with a less spectacular round than usual in fourth place, with Yasuo
Suzuki a further shot back.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Yasuo
Suzuki’s day was made when he discovered he had the only one in the first
division.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members
Wayne Carey, Seamus Treston and Mike Korney and also welcomed back Kevin
Townsend Rainer and Oili Helling and the “Tahiyaka Tour” made up of Tatsumi
Noguchi, Hideo Akiyama, Kaneo Watanabe, all led as usual by Yasuo Suzuki.
Scramble
winners: Rodney Nabbe,
Garry Barling, Mark Penfold and Rob Garrick.
Wednesday, Nov. 24,
Phoenix (Blue tees) Lakes & Ocean -Monthly Medals
CSS 74
Div. 1
1st Garry Barling (8) net 69
2nd Hideo Akiyama (15) net 72
3rd Barry Wellings (5) net 73
4th Yasuo Suzuki (10) net 74
Div. 2
1st Paul Simpson (17) net 76
2nd Kaneo Watanabe (17) net 77
3rd Rodney Howett (25) net 78
4th
Danny Greer (25) net 78
A full turnout of old and new members ensured that both
medals were well attended although the second division hopefuls struggled
from the back tees against a fairly strong wind, with Paul Simpson winning
out for his first Medal by a single stroke. The fact he did this after
returning to Pattaya and declaring a two shot reduction in handicap, made it
all the more commendable.
Kaneo Watanabe took second after a very good round
spoiled rather by a nine on the Ocean number four par 5 which probably cost
him the win.
Rodney Howett again showed good form to secure third
after winning the count-back with Danny Greer with a better 37.5 to 42.5
after Dannay had scorched round the Lakes nine in level handicap.
The first division was almost a walkover for Garry
Barling, also taking his first Medal in Pattaya, as he cruised round in
three under par and five under the day’s standard scratch of 74 to win by
three clear.
Hideo Akiyama was unlucky to find Garry in such good form
as he returned a very creditable level par round in second place with Barry
Wellings just a single stroke behind in third.
Yasuo Suzuki took his second placing in the week after
winning the count back with Jens Gunnarsson with a 34 against 34.5
There were no 2’s in the first division, but Teddy White
made it a very happy first outing by picking up the only one in the second
division to sweep the pot including a large roll over.
Prior to the prize giving Thomas and Gerry Bradshaw
together with Paul Scully Teddy White and Keith Evans were all welcomed as
new members and Derek Holt, Barrie Howarth, Kinya Akiyama, Satoru Shibata
and Masamoto Kuremechi were all welcomed back.
Friday, Nov. 26, Green
Valley - Monthly Scramble
What might turn out to be a final practice run for the
Baan Jing Jai Santa Scramble on the 17th December,
when many teams were trying out combinations seeking to get the best team
possible in their attempt to take the very prestigious top honours in that
competition, and with the promise of a full traditional Haven buffet laid on
prior to the presentations, all meant that the start sheet was full.
1st Rodney Nabbe, Garry Barling,
Mark Penfold, Rob Garrick (4.8) net 56.2
2nd Russell Exley, Chris Voller, Mikael Andersson,
Frank Hughes (4.5) net 56.5
3rd Rod Howett, Paul Simpson, Ole Stamnes, Roar Berger
(12.3) net 57.7
4th Rick Holmes, Barry Traynor, Roy Thornton, Jeremy
Masse (5.9) net 59.1
5th Alan Pilkington, Chris Knapp,
Peter Sumner, Al Keith (4.8) net 59.2
With Garry Barling in top form and well supported by his
fellow team mates it was still a tight competition in the end after they
returned a gross 61, including nine birdies and an eagle to take top honours
in a very keenly contested event, as the second place team led by Russell
Exley could only manage eleven birdies for the same 61 gross but having a
slightly lower handicap it was not quite enough for the win.
Third place went to the team led by Paul Simpson who
ensured that their large handicap was well utilised and returning a gross 70
to consign Roy Thornton’s team to fourth after they had returned a very tidy
65 gross.
One on the pre-start favorites led by Al Keith slipped
into fifth with a solid 64 gross.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group you can contact mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi
13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to
the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but
you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays on
the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found
on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Cassin cashes in on hot form
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Nov. 23, Rayong
C.C. - Stableford
We returned to Rayong C.C. last week to find course in
much better condition: they are still working on the course which can only
be a good thing.
Some good scores were posted, especially from the inform
Allan Cassin (12) with 39 points for first place. Phompinmon Seesa (31) took
second, also on 39 points losing the count-back.
Only two near pins were taken, shared between Allan &
Phompinmon.
Thursday, Nov. 25,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
Thursday we travelled to the testing Treasure Hill course
where there is still some work in progress with some temporary tees and
greens in use. Ii understand the new green will be available next week.
Apart from that the rest of the course was in excellent condition.
High scores are not easy to come by here and Derek
Waterworth (29) came in first with just 34 points, which must have pleased
him off his lower H/C as he brought a round of drinks later. Second place
went to Keith Hodges (26) with 33 points.
Only one near pin was taken by Ken and with three not won
the Banglamung Boys Home gets a donation.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday).
Pesentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside
hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc,
please call Ray on 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there ,Cheers & Good
Golfing!

Byrnes continues to scorch the fairways
Phoenix Tuesday Group
The
weekly winners with Fon from the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Yes, it’s that man again. Our dear friend Hugh Byrnes is
playing so consistently at present it is hard to see who can beat him.
However, as they say every dog has his day and I am sure
someone (or more) will play better and knock him off his throne.
With the weather conditions perfect it was the harder of
the combination today, Tuesday, November 23, with Mountain and Lake course
the challenge. It has to be said the course is now in great shape, with the
exception of a few rough areas around the base of the trees. But we should
not be there should we!
Hugh came in with a fine 38 points (gross 80) with joint
second places going to Bob Neylon and Colin Gregg each with 37 points. Good
scoring.
Near pins went to (yes you guessed) Hugh Byrne, with 2,
yours truly, and Eamon Murtagh.
We managed to get all four-balls today which keeps
everybody happy and that showed at the presentation back at the Relax Bar
where everyone who came back received their first drink free out of the
day’s takings. Trouble is most of the players came back which meant that
after the drinks bill was paid and the technical prize and lucky draw paid
there was not a lot of dough left for the winners. But that’s what we like -
no pot hunters!
At this time of the year we say hello to new faces and
goodbye to others as the tourists come and go, but as of yet all have been a
pleasure to play with.
The lucky draw of 2 free beers and a free massage
(courtesy of our hosts the Relax Bar) went to Richard Tereskiviche, your
scribe, and Peter Wethal.
And then it was onto the important part of the day, the
emptying of a few bottles of the amber nectar. All in all a wonderful day
out with wonderful company.
We now have 5 tee times booked every Tuesday and 2 tee
times every Friday at around the noon time. We are on the limits of filling
our groups at this time of the year, so if you wish to join in with the fun
please make sure you contact me, Mike Gerrard personally, by telephone call
only on 087 091 7565 or Bob Neylon on 081 916 1853.

O’Meara takes count-back
win at Green Valley
PSC golf from the Caddyshack
Wednesday, Nov. 24,
Plutaluang – Stableford
A round dozen made the trip to play the Navy course at
Plutaluang. Scores were not great and there was a three-way tie at the top
with Bernard Channing, Phonsie McGahan and Dave Strang all coming in with 31
points. Bernard was adjudged the winner after the count-back with Phonsie in
second and Dave in third.
Phonsie and Rod Gregg shared the ‘2’s pot.
Friday, Nov. 26, Green
Valley – Stableford
A large group of twenty-eight players turned up today so
we split the field and had two divisions.
In the A Flight, Alan Laurie came home in first place
with 37 points, just one point ahead of John Robert in second spot. Emmet
White took third place with 35 points after a count-back decision over Ted
Gardner.
Mick O’Meara was the joint top scorer of the day with 39
points to win the B Flight on count-back over Ben Findon on the same score.
Colin Gregg was third with 38 points and Bruce Tollitt took fourth with 36.
Ian Covill claimed the ‘2’s all to himself.

Emerson etches his name on
the trophy – and earns a cut
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar
Larry
Emerson, left, with runner-up Sus Ige.
The Three Sisters group again got their early start at
Pattaya Country Club on Wednesday November 17. The weather was again perfect
as it seems that the winter months have arrived.
Long hitting Larry Emerson took advantage of the dry
conditions and shot 38 points to win the day. Coming in a distant second was
Richard Hall with 33 points and the rest of the field trailed away a point
at a time – Herb Ishinaga with 32, Paul Kraft with 31 and ‘Big’ Gary in from
the States with 30 with others going lower.
One week later, November 24, the Three Sisters end of the
month tournament rolled around and the competition started close on the
front nine but Larry Emerson pulled away on the back nine. His long drives
and putting put him in the winner’s circle once more after he came in with
40 points. He has been winning more than his share of late and will be cut
off at the ankles as keeps turning in good scores.
Coming in with a respectful 38 points for second was Sus
Ige who is always near the top and vying for the trophy. As usual, all the
monthly winners will have their names put on the trophy at the end of the
year. This is the third time Larry has won this year.
The rest of the field didn’t do so well. Dale Murphy
struggled with 34 points, followed by Herb Ishinaga with 33. With good
weather conditions the scores were expected to be good but the dew on the
greens made it tough to putt well.
At this time I would like to thank Paul Donahue for
writing our articles for the past couple of years. He is now sidelined with
personal problems and hope he joins us again shortly. He will be sorely
missed until his return.

rainbow competition as well as all of our normal skins, etc. at Emerald Golf
Club.
We welcomed back Andy C, Allan B, and Tony D, which
pushed the numbers up to 15 and with another big competition taking place at
Emerald on Friday it made for one of the slowest rounds in a long time. High
season must be here!
As seen from the headline, JJ took the stableford
competition with 38 points, narrowly beating Andy C on 37. Nearest the pin
prize went to Tom S and skin results are as follows: Andy Oz (7), Allan B
(3), Dan M (3), Bernie (2), with Tom S, Terry C, Danny L and Andy C all
taking (1) each.
Finally congratulations go to Bernie after he announced
he is getting married to longtime girlfriend “O”. Good luck and best wishes
from everyone at the Backyard Golf Society.
Another great Charity Cross Bay Swim success
Staff Reporters
The 7th annual Charity Cross Bay
Swim in Pattaya took place this year on Sunday Nov. 21. Hosted by the Rotary
Club of Jomtien-Pattaya and given support by both Pattaya City and the
Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the event as ever included both adults
and children of all nationalities participating in this colourful and
environmentally friendly activity.
Nick
Wilson, left, broke his own record in the Male Long Swim event.
The weather was sunny with light winds and moderate
waves, which was a real boost to all the swimmers who took part. The Hard
Rock Hotel Pattaya again kindly offered its Hard Rock Caf้ area and
refreshments to the swimmers for the pre-race ceremonies and activities.
The opening ceremonies were conducted by Past District
Governor, Pratheep (Peter) Malhotra, ably assisted by Community Services
Director, Philip Wall Morris.
Hannah
Way, left, receives the Female Long Swim award from Nopporn Kanchanamane of
Thai Airways Pattaya.
Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome welcomed the opportunity to
attend the ceremonies and spoke about the significant contribution the
Charity Cross Bay Swim makes to the tourist image of Pattaya. He officially
opened the event and later blew the whistle to start the 1km swim from the
Hard Rock to the Dusit Resort.
Also adding their support to the proceedings were Serm
Phenjati of the Dusit D2 Baraquda Pattaya hotel and Nopporn Kanchanamane of
Thai Airways Pattaya.
Wongsakorn Hounkin, left, was adjudged the winner in the Male Short Course
category after a photo finish involving 12 swimmers.
As in previous years two challenges were available to
enthusiastic swimmers; a 3.5km swim from the Sea Rescue Unit near Bali Hai
Pier and a 1km from The Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya. Both swims finished at the
Dusit Thani Pattaya Resort on Chaba Beach in North Pattaya.
Safety precautions were significantly upgraded this year
with many new enhancements. The Pattaya Sea Rescue team at Bali Hai
monitored the contestants from their high-speed rescue boats and jet-skis
for the full duration of the race. They made sure that all the swimmers
arrived safely on shore.
Nicole
Russell, left, took the Female Short Swim award.
The finish line for both races was marked by two red
balloon towers on the beach at Dusit Thani Pattaya. All registered swimmers
were welcomed with a commemorative swim T shirt, fresh towels, a cold drink,
and were later presented with a very impressive medallion.
The overall winner this year was once again Nicholas
Wilson, who broke his own record and passed the balloon towers in just over
42 minutes for the 3.5km long swim.
There was a steward’s enquiry in the Male Short Swim
category after 12 swimmers jostled as they came out of the water and all
thought they had crossed the line first. Eventually a semblance of order was
restored and the swimmers were able to agree upon the final results list
themselves.
Long Swim (Male)
1st Nick Wilson
2nd Steve Woods
3rd Komkit Phasan
Long Swim (Female)
1st Hannah Way
2nd Kristina Soliheim
3rd Sophie Walker
Short Swim (Male)

2nd Puchong Pakdeenork
3rd Paul Cardwell
3rd Charkit Pansan
Short Swim (Female)
1st Nicole Russell

3rd Natalie Luneva
Following their exertions in the ocean, the swimmers were
then treated to a gala buffet lunch hosted by the Dusit Thani Pattaya, who,
like they do every year for this event, generously made their numerous
facilities and staff available.
Food and beverage services were also offered by the
Rotary staff and the Paulaner Garden Restaurant to spectators and supporters
lined up on the Dusit Thani Pattaya beach. Medical staff and an ambulance,
provided by Bangkok Pattaya Hospital Emergency Services, were also on
standby at the hotel.
The charity swim enjoys the privilege of being the only
event of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard. It is a fun and uniquely family
event and a great opportunity for swimmers of all ages to take up a serious
challenge for a noble cause.
The proceeds from day will be used to finance
humanitarian projects serviced by the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya to help
alleviate the suffering and needs of the underprivileged in our community
and elsewhere in the Kingdom. One of the major ongoing projects is the
installation of pure drinking water outlets in schools in rural areas.
Philip Wall Morris, Community Services Director, Rotary
Club of Jomtien-Pattaya, and Brendan Kelly, Cross Bay Swim Event Manager,
expressed their gratitude to all those who provided support and help to make
this year’s event a great success, both as a swim and a fundraiser. Tributes
were paid to Thai Airways for their very generous sponsorship and to the
Dusit D2 Baracuda hotel for their advice and help in fund raising
management.

Favourites suffer a Thorne in their side
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited the pleasant Crystal Bay
course in Bangpra on Monday, 22nd November to play a strokeplay competition,
the final monthly merit event for November. The B and C nines were in fine
order and the greens were medium to fast and very consistent. The field was
divided into two flights at sixteen and under and play got underway on time
on the relatively empty course.
The crowded first tee saw a loose limbed Brian Shaw lead
off with a power shank the likes of which had never been seen before, and
playing his second shot down the first from the far extremes of the second
fairway gave no indication that he would finish top of the second flight
with net 73. The more orthodox Len Jones managed to find thirteen fairways
on the way to his second place score of net 75 and Malcolm Schofield
trundled in third on 76 with his best effort in Thailand after seven years
of trying.
The top flight was gripped with tension once again as the
main contenders for the monthly prize were again paired together. Thai
golfer Wichai Tananusorn (74) trailed in one shot behind Richard “Banjo”
Bannister whilst the top spot was occupied by Tony Thorne, sharing the day’s
best gross of eighty-three with Peter Sumner, giving him net figures of 72.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to a
dejected Pat Murphy after a round uncharacteristically punctuated with
errors, including playing the wrong ball on B6.
Crystal Bay can be very forgiving but not when the golfer
makes elementary mistakes. It can be a joy to play when things go right.
All change at the top
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Bangpakong Riverside
Club on Wednesday 24th November to play a stableford competition, and
despite losing a couple of playing groups to the popular John Preddy
Memorial event at Khao Kheow, we still managed to put out a strong field to
compete on the splendidly prepared course.
A golfer at the top of his game will score well here and
so it was to prove as Don Nellis and Joe Niisato shared fourth place with 37
points each, a couple behind the third place of lady golfer Mam Morel,
consistent as always with 39 points. The joint winners were Phil Knight and
new IPGC member John Pegrum who pulled out all the stops to record excellent
totals of forty points each for an emphatic win.
There were no birdie ‘2’s (amazingly), with the
consistent greens holding all the aces on this occasion.
The Booby Bevy went to marshal for the day Tony Thorne
after a round he would choose to forget weighed down as he was with the
trappings of “work”.
Elsewhere Tim Lazecki was the best PGS performer at Khao
Kheow with 38 points as Jack Robertson received a trophy for the day’s low
score. Sadly the single flight competition saw Tim’s fine efforts go
unrewarded as he was usurped by a few forty point returns. Forty-plus at
Khao Kheow? Not often, but regularly achieved at Bangpakong Riverside.
West best at Khao Kheow
The Pattaya Golf Society chose Khao Kheow as its Friday
venue on 26th November for a stableford competition over the C and A nines.
The course currently is in excellent condition and a warm breezy day made
for a comfortable and close competition.
The large field was divided into two divisions at
seventeen and under and the second flight almost went to form with lady
golfer Margaret Wilkinson taking third place with 31 points. One of the
flight favourites Shui Kodaka came up with the goods with a well crafted 33
points but he found he was joined at the top of the leaderboard by Roy Mann,
playing his final round this year, and his score gave him his first winning
place in almost ten years of trying. It truly is a “Mann’s” game!
In the top flight scores were better with Paul McNally
firing the day’s best gross figures of 78, giving him 35 points for third.
Ahead of him was Steve Jones with a splendid 36 points, which proved to be
not quite enough as Mark West took victory on his first golf day this visit
with 37 points.
There were a myriad of birdie ‘2’s with Paul McNally,
“Banjo” Bannister, Yasuo Suzuki, Shui Kodaka, Tom Kirkpatrick and Len Jones
all sharing the healthy pot.
The Booby Bevy went to Jorn Eriksen who had arrived late
at Rabbi’s and had to enlist the help of a taxi driver to get him to the
course on time and the cool beer was a fitting way to draw the curtain on
his annual visit.
It was a pleasure to enjoy the day at Khao Kheow with
fine company.

Suzuki motors to victory
IPGC Members Green Valley monthly report
Sunday, Nov. 7 -
Stableford
1st Rod Howett 40pts
2nd Joe McArdle 40pts
3rd Jack Behan 39pts
4th Kevin
Hamilton 38pts
The change in the weather has dried the course and
provided good playing conditions with lots of run on the ball. Rod Howett,
an IPGC stalwart and native Londoner enjoyed the improved conditions to
record a sparkling score and inch ahead of Joe McArdle to take the honours.
Rod is clearly taking full advantage of the lessons he has been receiving
from Al Keith.
Jack Behan put in a credible display to take third place,
joining Joe in representing Irish hopes. Kevin Hamilton fought hard for
England with a sound 38 points. There were no ‘2’s today.
Sunday, Nov. 14 –
Stableford
1st Joe Peters 43 Pts
2nd Charlie Lapsey 39 Pts
3rd Ted Lodge 38 Pts
4th Roar Berger 37 Pts
Another busy day with good playing conditions saw the
Irish come to the fore. Joe Peters, a regular IPGC Sunday man, took the
honours for Dublin with a scintillating 43 points. Charlie Lapsey from
Donegal played very well off his 8 handicap to take second place. Ted Lodge,
an ex Captain from Rush a quaint Dublin links course, was close behind. Ted,
who plays steadily of his 11 handicap, is never far off the pace.
Roar Berger from Norway took fourth place, the only non
Irishman to get a mention today.
‘2’ were achieved by Joe Peters, Ted Lodge, Alec Hoare, and Paul Egan.
Sunday, Nov 21 -
Stableford
1st Charles Sheppard 40pts
2nd Andy Galvin 35pts
3rd Joe McArdle 32pts
4th Frank
McGowan 31pts
The evergreen Charles Sheppard came out to play today,
winning with several lengths to spare. The Irish stable of Andy Galvin, Joe
McArdle, and Frank McGowan ran credible races but were unable to peg back
Charles who had the race at his mercy with several holes to play.
Joe McArdle had the only ‘2’ today.
Sunday, Nov. 26 –
Stableford
Green Valley
1st Yasuo Suzuki 41pts
2nd Ted Lodge 40pts
3rd Brian Talbot 37pts
Silky Oak
1st Russell Exley 39pts
2nd Barry Wellings 38pts
Charlie Lapsey 37pts CB 21
A busy course and large turnout saw two competitions
today, one on Green Valley and one on the new Silky Oak. The later received
good reviews and was much enjoyed.
On Green Valley Yasuo Suzuki, a regular IPGC man from
Japan, scored his best ever round on the course to narrowly defeat the
consistent Ted Lodge. Brian Talbot took the minor honour.
Silky Oak brought out the best from our organizer Russell
Exley who recorded a tight win over Barry Wellings. Charlie Lapsey, clearly
a cad, beat charming Irish lady Teresa Connelly on count-back for third
place.
‘2’s today were achieved by Russell Exley, Brian Talbot,
and twice by Yasuo Suzuki.
Presentations, as always, were conducted at the Golf
Centre Bar on the course with amiable hosts John and Geoff, assisted by
their lovely staff, taking excellent care of the golfers.

Gabe in cruise control at Mountain Shadow
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s top trio, Brian Gabe, Mick O’Meara and Steve Compton.
Thomas Cotton
Tuesday, Nov. 23, Mountain
Shadow - Stableford
It has been quite some time, possibly a year since the
Bert’s crew were willing to accept the challenge of Mountain Shadow. But
perhaps time had healed the wounded egos of those who had been humbled. And
what could be happier company than humble golfers? And we were pleasantly
surprised at the excellent condition of the course and how the trees were
cleverly arranged to block many of our shots.
Perhaps it was due to the approach of American
Thanksgiving Day this Thursday that the Americans were slightly ahead of the
pack. It was Motown Man, Brian Gabe who finished in the clear lead with the
always sardonic Steve Compton not far behind.
1st Brian Gabe 39pts
2nd Steve Compton 37pts
3rd Mick O’Meara 35pts
4th Jack Robertson 34pts
Near Pins: Al Laurie, Steve Compton (2), Jack Roberson.

PSC Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
The Drut & San Mig Stu
Monday, Nov. 22,
Bangpakong – Stableford
Twenty-eight golfers gathered at the Cafe Kronborg for
the trip to Bangpakong and arrived at the course one hour and five minutes
later. Playing off the white tees the leading group hit off the first at
1005 hours and completed their round in four hours and fifteen minutes.
Left to
right: Don Richardson, JC Lhoste, ‘The Admiral’ and Brian Noguer.
The weather was warm the course in superb condition and
the greens, despite being trickier than the thirty seventh president of the
United States, putted truly.
In the A flight Brian Gabe, who didn’t register a score
on the first hole, managed to compile an impressive thirty eight points to
take first place. Mike Gosden on thirty six points slotted into second spot
whilst Per-Olav Baarli, also on the same score, was third and Niels Hansen
finished fourth after a twenty two, thirteen point split for thirty five
points.
In the B flight Brendan Byrne, who scored thirty seven
points, was delighted with his win and commented that his first nine holes
indicated the wind was whistling through his ears shot selection wise.
Warren Holland, who two weeks ago said his game was as stale as a hot cross
bun in August, posted thirty five points to take second place. In third
place Erwin Hafliger, who was in more strife than a worm with hernia after
scoring only twelve points on the first nine, made a great comeback on the
flip side due to a hot putter and handed in thirty three points. Dave
Richardson also scored thirty three points to run fourth.
One interesting non place getter was Kurt Sangaard who
scored twenty eight points comprised of seven and twenty one on the
respective nines.
A Flight (0–17)
1st Brian Gabe (17) 38pts
2nd Mike Gosden (10) 36pts
3rd Per-Olav Baarli (16) 36pts
4th Niels Hansen (14) 35pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Brendan Byrne (20) 37pts
2nd Warren Holland (21) 35pts
3rd Erwin Hafliger (23) 33pts
4th Dave Richardson (24) 33pts
Near pins went to Mike Allidi on 4,
Brendan Byrne on 13 and Mike Gosden on 7 and 16.
Long putts saw Brendan Byrne roll in a python on the
ninth and Jeff Warner bin a monster on the eighteenth.
The Coveted Compass Cap award was not played for today
due to the absence of presenter extraordinaire, SMS.
Upon the announcement that the stand in scribe is hanging
up the pencil so the column may return to some form of sanity in the near
future, a cast of thousands rose as one with resounding tumultuous cheering.
It would be parsimonious of me not to thank Dave
Richardson for his invaluable assistance in correlation of the score cards
and adjudication on ruling requests. Many thanks to Ken Bernek who assisted
in our fines collection donations to Deefa the Dog for our charity drive.
Thursday, Nov. 25, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
We had 33 starters for today’s game and the journey in
several mini buses took 23 minutes. We welcomed Hugh O’Donnell (USA), Guy
Canipel (France), Claude Halagan (France) and Joe Bensoussan (France).
The weather was picture perfect with a light breeze
blowing from stuff knows where and only a few puffy white things were
hovering above. Birds were singing and the caddies were smiling… what more
can one want to the start of a golfing day? Beer I say! So I did!
I had not had the pleasure of playing this course before
and was pleasantly surprised as I made my way around off the white tees. The
fairways are generous, however straying was unforgiving, particularly if you
go on safari as far as I do! Only two golfers bettered their handicaps which
lends testament to the above passage.
Don Richardson (recently back from the blarney country)
played solidly to post 38 points and win the A Flight. Second was ‘Mr.
Consistent’ Mike Gosden with 36, third on count-back was Mike Alidi (35) and
fourth was Guy Canipel.
B Flight saw Brian Noguer fire an impressive 38 points to
take out the winner’s podium for this grade. Second was Mike Winfield,
another regular high finisher with a par 36, third place was Per Olav Baarli
34 and Brendan Byrne made fourth with 32 points.
C Flight winner was J C Lhotse with a commendable 36
points, followed by Svend Gaarde who won on a count-back from Walter
Schoeber, both with 32 points. Graham Buckingham snuck into fourth place
with 29 points as Joe Vanderwegon 30 points failed to show at presentations.
Characteristically the Café Kronborg presentations are
carried out at the clubhouse on the day of play, however on a few occasions
during the year presentations are made back at the Café Kronborg and as
today was Thanksgiving Day the Café Kronborg kindly laid on a scrumptious
spread which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who were there. Thanks Bjorn and
Gary Rogers also for your thoughtfulness and generosity.
A Flight (0-15)
1st Don Richardson (11) 38pts
2nd Mike Gosden (10) 36pts
3rd Mike Alidi (3) 35pts
4th Guy Canipel (7) 35pts
B Flight (16–22)
1st Brian Noguer (22) 38pts
2nd Mike Winfield (20) 36pts
3rd Per Olav Baarli (16) 34pts
4th Brendan Byrne (20) 32pts
C Flight (23+)
1st J C Lhoste (23) 36pts
2nd Svende Gaarde (23) 32pts
3rd Walter Schoeber (34) 32pts
4th Graham Buckingham (24) 29pts
Near Pins: Niels Hansen, Stu Rifkin, Mike Allidi, Guy Canipel
Long Putts: Guy Canipel, Don Richardson
As it was Thanksgiving Day, both Deefer the Dog and the
Compass Cap charity fund seekers stayed hidden but shall return with a
vengeance at our next outing.
A friendly reminder that shirts with collars are a
requirement in all club houses; it is also a PSC rule which has been
mentioned on prior occasions. This rule applies to ALL who play with Café
Kronborg, no exceptions please.

Irish eyes smiling at Diana Seniors
December
winners John Conolly, Tom Breslin and Chant “Moon” Schwulera with the
tournament organizer, Nigel Cannon, left.
The final Diana Senior and Ladies Open for the year had
51 players at Pattaya Country Club on Thursday November 25. It was a busy
day with our friends from Café Kronborg following our 14 groups.
The course continues to improve and with the dry season
here, there was lots of run on the ball which produced some excellent
scores. All the drink stops have been completely re-furbished making it a
pleasure to stop for a quick one!
In the Ladies comp our good friend Chant “Moon” Schwulera
(H/cap 11) was in top spot with 34 points. It was the same score for the
runner up Noi Saraprakhon (25) who just made second spot over Brit-Marie
Wimmersted (20), also with 34 points, with the count-back going to the front
9 (back 6)!
There was a big Irish group with us today providing the
winners in both of the Men’s divisions.
In the Seniors it was a new face - John Conolly (20) with
a fine 41 points taking the honours. Ake Ovegren (27) was runner-up with 39
points.
Returnee Irishman – and good friend of the Diana Seniors
– Tom Breslin (23) was the winner in the Super Seniors with 41 points,
followed by Werner Schwarz (17) with 39 points. All scores are submitted to
Pattaya Sports Club.
Near Pins went to Ake Ovegren, Willy Hindsjo, Pimusa
Tonkhoksoong and Werner Schwarz, while the long putts were sunk by Bo
Temmell and Britt-Marie Wimmerstedt
Before announcing the winners Diana Seniors Organizer
Nigel Cannon took the opportunity to thank all players for their support
during the year. He particularly thanked Alan Pearce who had checked the
cards and worked out the results every month. Appreciation was made of the
staff at PCC for their help and friendliness throughout.
Nigel also stated that The Diana Group would continue
with the Seniors and Ladies monthly open throughout 2011 – with some minor
changes.
The next Diana Seniors and Ladies open is on Thursday,
January 27 at Pattaya Country Club with a tee time of 0900. Sign-up sheets
will be at Diana Green Bottle on 2nd Road and the
Diana Driving Range from early January.

3rd Peter LeNoury (8) 37pts
4th
John Emmerson (11) 36pts
Twenty-five players in our comp today and Ian Ashenden
was truly the class act of the field. A magnificent 68 off the stick with a
five under front nine and one birdie and 2 bogies on the back gave him a
winning 40 point score. Well done mate!
John Bahng had another fine round with 38 points for
second, Peter LeNoury was third on 37, and Emmerson fourth with 36.
Wednesday, Nov. 24,

2nd Brian Gavagan (16) 34pts
3rd Warren Holland (21) 33pts
4th
Jeff Cordeiro (7) 32pts
Judging by the scores today, Treasure Hill came out the
overall winner as the speedy greens proved a challenge for most.
Brian Prudden had a back nine 17 points to edge out Brian
Gavagan on count back for first place. Warren Holland was a clear third on
33 points, with Jeff Cordeiro taking fourth after beating out Tom Balch and
Ed Brubaker.
Friday, Nov. 26,
Plutaluang – Stableford
1st Keith Meehan (18) 38pts
2nd Kevin Taylor (7) 36pts
3rd Brian Prudden (18) 35pts
4th
Captain Bob Finley (14) 33pts
Only 2 of our 30 players today could get to their
respective handicaps. We started on the West course and finished on North.
The greens were not as fast as Treasure Hill, but were in generally good
condition.
Keith Meehan steadied the ship and sailed to the victory
today with 38 points. Kevin Taylor, having just arrived back in Pattaya,
guided his way around to a fine 36 points for second. Mr. Steady, Brian
Prudden, was third on 35 points and Captain Bob Finley avoided the water
hazards on his way to a 33 point score.

Six balls and six hours
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Barry Hooper
I am sorry but having to play behind six-ball groups and
a round taking over six hours is just too much for most players to endure -
and completely takes the reason out of the picture as to why most play golf,
i.e. relaxation and pleasure. But that is what the players from TRGG had to
endure on Saturday at Century Chonburi. The last group just finishing in the
fading light of the day and with other players still found out on the
course.
Some of
the TRGG players relax
after their 6-hour round at Century Chonburi.
The outcome of this total mismanagement by the course
marshal was that we will not be returning for the foreseeable future. The
question also begs asking as to why they get it so wrong? My own personal
belief is pure greed. Let us cram as many players on the course as we can.
What they fail to see is the long term picture but then just how many times
have we seen that? I suppose we really should be used to it by now. But I am
sorry it still erks when you get treated that way.
Well that is my moan out of the way and now it is down to
reporting on the weeks play at the TRGG.
Monday, Nov. 22, Khao

2nd Jack McNamara (21) 35pts
3rd
Jimmy Wolfe (16) 34pts
Monday we visited Khao Kheow with over thirty players so
two divisions. I had it reported to me that the course was in great
condition, nearly empty (not sure why), and that an excellent day’s play
resulted with some good scoring.
The highest score was posted by Steve Carlton to win Div
1 with forty points. Second and four back was Noel Pittard and in third was
Fergus Brennan, also with thirty-six but losing out on the count-back.
Div 2 was won by Mod Chaviraksa with her thirty-seven
points. Jack McNamara came second on thirty-five and Jimmy Wolfe took third
with thirty-four after beating Frank Hughes on count-back
Four ‘2’s came from Jimmy Chawke, Ron Kensett, Ian Bell

1st Mike Rushant (13) 42pts
2nd Ross McLaughlan (21) 35pts
3rd Ross Bunce (13) 35pts

Tuesday was a trip to Mountain Shadow and I was advised
that it was found to be generally in good order and that the greens were
very playable. We had a good turnout on the day of 26 so two full divisions.
First home in Div 1 was Ed Brubaker with a great 43
points. Fergus Brennan found himself eight back at 35 in second and third
place went to Brendan Moore on count-back over Barry Welling.
Division 2 had Mike Rushant at the top with another over
forty score, this time it was 42 points, and Ross McLaughlan was the one who
found himself seven back this time in second place. In third was Ross Bunce
also with 35 but he lost out on the dreaded count-back.

A very big group of over thirty made the journey to
Phoenix to enjoy the attributes of the great Ocean & Mountain course.
Division 1 had Ian Bell find form for the win with a good
score of 38 points. In second was Roger Wilkinson with his 37 and taking
third was Brendan Moore at 35 after count-back over Ross Bunce
Louis Flanigan topped the list in Division 2 with a
massive 45 points. Jack McNamara was four back in second and taking third
spot was Alan Evans with 35.
Three ‘2’s were recorded by Paul Alexander, Monique Bunce

Chonburi - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Ian Dallas (10) 33pts
2nd Gary Barlin (8) 33pts

Div. 2
1st John Thornber (17) 34pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (13) 34pts
3rd
Jack McNamara (19) 34pts
Saturday was a visit back to Century Chonburi and this
turned out to be a bad decision as the opening of my report records.
Winner of the top flight was Ian Dallas with 33 points
but he had 18 on the back nine so won the count-back over Gary Barlin with
the same score but only 17 on the back nine. In third was Rod Nabbe with 32
points.
Division two found John Thornber at the top of the
three-way count-back listing with 34 (back nine 22). In second was Roger
Wilkinson (back nine 19) and third came Jack McNamara (nine 18).
Three ‘2’s were sunk by Ed Brubaker, Brendan Moore and
John Thornber.

Lewiinski’s bid for the Olympics
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Sunday, Nov. 21, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colm Mullen (15) 39pts
2nd Claude Harder (11) 38pts
3rd Terry Mangan (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st Kristy Knight (18) 38pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (16) 37pts
3rd Kathy Doody (19) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 Ian Halfpenny, No 9 Reg McKay, No 12 Liam McGuinness,
No16 Claude Harder.
Pierre Bietry in action at
this year’s Bangkok Marathon.
Yes golf is soon to be an Olympic sport, but today’s
headline for once isn’t about golf. It’s about two much more physically
demanding sports in running and swimming, as two of our regular players took
time off the links to test themselves physically rather than mentally!
Over the past weeks Pierre ‘The Magician’ Bietry has been
in training for the Bangkok Marathon, whilst ‘The Principal” Jez Lees has
been swimming hard in preparation for the Annual Pattaya Cross Bay Swim.
Up in Bangkok, Pierre started at three o’clock in the
morning outside the Royal Palace, and made it back in 4 hours 20 minutes.
Apparently Pierre started off at a leisurely 4.5km an hour but upped it to a
very respectable 10 when he realized he had left partner Yui in charge of
his wallet.
Meanwhile here in Pattaya, Jez was competing in his
second Cross Bay Swim. A large contingent of golfing buddies turned out to
wave him off from the Bali Hi Rescue Centre as he set out for the Dusit
Resort 3.5km away. Precisely 1 hour 6 minutes and 23 seconds later they
welcomed him home in a very impressive 4th place.
Many thanks to all those who supported and donated to the
worthy causes, and very well done to Pierre and Jez. It seems someone who
will for now remain nameless quipped that having now seen Jez play golf and
swim, he should definitely stick to the latter.
Jez
Lees all set for the Pattaya Cross Bay Swim.
Talking of golf; no one knows when he will strike, but
the jovial Colm Mullen never keeps ‘em waiting long. The Irishman’s 39
points was the best on the day and it had to be that good to edge last
week’s title boy Claude Harder who has taken a likening to the headlines,
and fellow Irishman Terry, who were tied a shot adrift. Terry’s card
indicates he is about ready to blow his own whistle. The Offaly gang leader
Kevin was hovering close by.
B Flight had the same number of Irishmen on the podium;
Christy Good Knight taking the laurels with a splendid 38 points. Peter ‘Don
O Corleone’ Henshaw, Kathy Doody and Sim Davis were all locked on 37 points
and they finished in that order on the resulting count-back. Bad luck Sim!
It was nice to see that quality golfer Andy Leach back in
town again.
Art O’Conner, Maurice Copan and Christy Knight split the ‘2’s pot.
Monday, Nov. 22, Treasure
Hills - Stableford
A Flight
1st Terry Mangan (12) 35pts
2nd Mike Nagle (13) 34pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (10) 34pts
B Flight

2nd Eddy Beilby (17) 35pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (16) 33pts
What a difference a course makes! And some distance
(6,726 yds) and some dryness. These same guys and girls and their same sacks
of clubs took on the diabolical design of Yoshikazu Kato, who also laid out
the Canyon course at one of Thailand’s most fabled courses, Blue Canyon.
I should stop the article right there and leave the
winners to their anonymity but we never do that. Actually the player of the
day and winner of B flight Joe ‘Sat nav’ Tynan was the only player to better
his handicap - thus the odd murmurs of “sandbagger” at the presentation.
Seriously, Joe proved to be a most popular winner. Eddy ‘The Eagle’ put in a
fine 35 point haul for the silver and the ubiquitous Peter ‘Don Corleone’
was left to round out the flight.
Ha! I told you he was ready to pounce - Irelands’ Terry
Mangan did all that was required to win the senior flight firing a steady 35
points. Mike Nagle and Ed ‘The Right Honorable’ Wyckoff’ faced off in a
count-back as both were a shot short; the count back victim was Ed
Ten ‘2’s were recorded and each recipient won about as
much as the cost of this week’s edition of the Mail.
Wednesday, Nov. 24, St.
Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Seamus Cotter (11) 38pts
2nd Steve Mascari (1) 37pts
3rd John Bahng (11) 36pts
B Flight
1st Pat Reagan (12) 41pts
2nd Mike Nagle (13) 38pts

D Flight
1st Jim Elphick (24) 38pts
2nd Tim DeGrote (26) 37pts
3rd Jim Bell (21) 3 pts
A large field enjoyed the special rates opportunity to
play St Andrews and the always well conditioned course yielded a host of
fine scores.
Former owner of Lewiinski’s, and always a welcome
addition, Steve Mascari made a rare appearance and showed he is still a
leader of Pattaya’s best golfers with a super 37 points of his 1 handicap.
Seamus ‘the captain’ Cotter stopped it being a winning return though by
bettering Steve by a single shot. Last week’s headline boy John Bahng filled
the flight with an even par round.
The young man from Co. Dublin Pat Reagan took the laurels
in B Flight and co-man of the match with a splendid 41 points. Mike Nagle
gained the silver with38 points leaving Tore Eliassen to fill the flight.
Eddy the eagle took control of C Flight with a co-man of
the match performance 41 points while John Bresnchan posted a very
creditable 39 points for the silver. Gerry Mernagh emerged from a three-way
count-back over Peter Hedenburgh and Brian Carroll to round out the flight
Jim Elphick took the top spot in D Flight on 38 points
and Tim DeGrote was a shot back for silver. Jim ‘Houdini’ Bell and Bill
Peach contested the bronze in a count-back, the scales tipping in Jims
favour.
David Hamilton, Colin Davis, Gavin Knox, Gerry Mernagh
and Salim AlHarthy shared the ‘2’s pot.
Friday, Nov. 26, Crystal
Bay - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (10) 40pts
2nd Andy Leach (5) 37pts
3rd Jean-Pierre Gasser (7) 35pts
B Flight
1st Lindsay Semple (12) 40pts

C Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (17) 37pts
2nd Lou Szigligeti (20) 34pts
3rd Jum Karagit (15) 34pts
Friday’s fixture saw the society venture to the well
maintained Crystal Bay.
The premier flight was led by Ed ‘The Right Honorable’
Wyckoff with an impressive 40 points and he was chased home by Andy leach
who showed no symptoms of jet lag for second. Jean Pierre Grasser took third
after a three-way tie that included Seamus ‘Captain’ Cotter and Peter
Lenoury.
Australian Lindsay Semple was co-man of the match and B
Flight winner as he matched Ed’s card. He was followed home by Scotland’s
Gavin Knox and the girl on form Yui Bietry.
The junior flight belonged to Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby who
made it a third visit this week to the pay window. Aussie Lou ‘Zig Zag’ was
second and the flight was completed by Jum Karagit who got the verdict in a
count-back over the unlucky Paula Pederson.
The story to this flight however belonged to Tim Degrout
who arrived late at the course and started his round on the third hole after
missing the first two. He was only a shot away from making the podium at the
end.
Thierry Petremont, Takeshi Hakozaki San and Yui Bietry
split the ‘2’s pot and Yui was two inches from an ace.

English relinquish their hold of ‘Roo Cup’
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
Joey’s column
Monday, Nov. 22, Burapha -
Stableford
There were two notables playing the A & B nines in
wonderful conditions at Burapha today; Owen Lloyd who shot 42 points off a
handicap of 12 to win Div A, and the runner up in the same division, Jason
Moylan with 40. These two were streets ahead of the rest, led by John
Cunningham and Tony Garnett who finished in joint third, both with 34
points, as they could not be separated on count-back, right down to the last
hole.
Monday’s “Roo Cup” winners, Andy and Drew, but the “Roo” has lost her Joey.
Bob Lindborg took Div B with a creditable 36 points ahead
of Sean Johnston, having his best round for some time, with the same score.
Two friends from one of the early groups, shared the same score of 33 points
but Bob Finley got the nod over Jim Bryan by virtue of his better back nine
to grab third place.
Mike Quill, who’s scraped in with a couple of third
places in the last week or so with 31 points, proved that he could do better
if he tried by winning Div C with 35, three clear of Paul Sibley (32pts) and
Bruce McAdam (31pts). We say goodbye to these three guys who are returning
to Aus to do a bit of work.
The “Roo Cup” has become an important challenge match at
the Outback over the last couple of years and today proved to be no
exception, as the Scottish pairing of Andy Butterworth & Drew Robertson (the
challengers) took on the long time holders, Steve Milne & Mark Riggall. It
was a hard fought duel of the gladiators in a tough match that eventually
went to the Scots by one hole, thus relieving the English of the coveted “Roo”.
There were three ‘2’s from Jim Little, Bob Lindborg &
Sean Johnston

Tuesday, Nov. 23, Pattaya C.C. - Stroke
Pattaya Country Club hosted an Outbacker Birthday Cup
today, for the inaugurator of the event, Frank O’Neill, who started this
event back in the Outback’s early days in November 2007. So this was the
fourth time that Frank had celebrated his birthday in this way and as is the
hallmark of all Frank’s golf days, it was to be “proper golf”, and that
means stroke play, rarely played at the Outback.
The course was in the best condition seen for a long time
with most of the greens being in good shape and the bunkers had clearly been
worked on as well. Nearly all the work on the drink stops has been completed
as well with some pretty little gardens and fountains surrounding the ones
at the 13th and 16th. The
weather was absolutely stunning, to coin a phrase from one the Outback’s
regulars, just back from Kazakhstan but this time for good.
There was a select field of 23 Outbackers but the day
turned out to be a family affair as Ae, Frank’s lady (Laong’s) son, was the
easy overall winner with a net 67, playing off of 12. Frank himself, won Div
B with a net 70 and Laong got fourth in same division with 74, heading a
three-way count-back. Geoff Doody (71) and Arthur Bailey (73) filled the
other two places.
In Div A the scoring was not quite so good, as the 73
from Bill Bishop was enough to win, from the ex Kazak, John Lawton in second
on 74, with Steve Plant, now finding his form again, third on 75.
There were three ‘2’s from Chad, Dennis (the Turnip) and
Arthur Bailey.
Back at the bar, a long table had been set up for all the
players to enjoy some good food and wine all courtesy of Frank and of course
the prize giving.
After Capt’ Bob had announced the normal divisional
results the floor was handed over to Frank to say a few words. He rose with
his special “walking stick”, given to him by the Outback three years ago, as
he explained that it had all the necessary attachments for the older
gentleman, including a spy glass and horn. He called Ae as the overall
winner, who regretfully couldn’t be here and then announced the near pins
winners: Capt’ Bob picked up the first two, with John Lawton getting the 12th
and Ae the 16th.
There was also a mystery prize that nobody knew about, a
prize for anybody that shot Frank’s age – 77, and that went to Capt’ Bob as
well.
Great day Frank, thanks and Happy Birthday!
Overall
1st Ae O’Neill (12) net 67
Div A (0-18)
1st Bill Bishop (14) net 73

Wednesday, Nov. 24, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Only 18 Outbackers dared venture out to this difficult
but popular course, which was in good condition in spite of the temporary
tee boxes and it’s one (the 17th) temporary green.
It’s great value which clearly makes it favourite amongst the farangs in
town and today there were many groups to be seen on the course. The pace of
play was dreadfully slow, which makes the course additionally tough but the
beer was cold and the weather fantastic, so all in all, not a bad day out.
Top score of the day was 35 points shared by four
players; Muzza and Suzi in Div A and Ivan and John in Div B, but it was
double hard luck for the Lawtons as they got beaten on count-back, twice.
There was another blow for John, as he and Chad took on
Capt’ Bob and Jack in a revenge match that they lost in Chiang Mai; needing
the win to secure the wager (burgers and beer) they could only manage a
half. However, the match has now been renamed the “Boo Hoo” cup (a suitable
trophy has now been acquired) but this is a trophy you won’t want to win
because it goes to the losers and it will cost you money, every time you
lose. Full rules coming soon and all the proceeds will go to a charity at
the end of this year.
There was also a ‘jackpot 2’ bagged by John Lawton.
Div A (0-17)
1st Murray Hart (11) 35pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (15) 35pts
3rd Steve Milne (12) 32pts
Div B (18+)
1st Ivan Plunkett (21) 35pts
2nd John Lawton (19) 35pts

Friday, Nov. 26, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Thirty-eight Outbackers today at their regular Friday
slot playing the A & B loops from the yellow tees; great course, great
conditions but as usual, not such great scores.
Neil Lavery, on one his extended sojourns from Vietnam,
surprisingly found himself at the top of the leader board in Div A with 36
points, two ahead of Steve Milne and Raji both on 34. Raji’s 34 points
earned him one ladder point to put him back on top, with two rounds to go.
In Div B, George Bishop and Bob Lindborg both scored 36
points as well, George getting the nod, and podium regular Kissy Buchanan
took third with his 34.
John Cogan invited his neighbours, Dave & Liz Collier to
play with the Outback for the first time and Liz came in with the top score
of the day of 38 points. She played off 24, two less than her actual
handicap as is customary for ladies playing with the Outback at Khao Kheow,
but she will now find that next time out, her regular handicap will be 24,
or 22 if she plays here again. Six shots back was John Kittilsen (32pts),
showing his first bit of form since returning to Thailand but too little too
late to rescue him from the foot of the ladder, where he seems destined to
collect the NAGA.
Finally, welcome back to Paul Quinn, who had a reasonable
31 points to take fourth place.
There were eight ‘2’s from Paul G, Paul Q, Colin
Bavington, Steve Mann, Suzi, George Bishop, Sugar Ray and Rosco.
Div A (0-12)
1st Neil Lavery (11) 36pts
2nd Steve Milne (12) 34pts
3rd Amarjit Banwaitt (7) 34pts
4th Ray Dell (12) 33pts
Div B (13-18)
1st George Bishop (15) 36pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (17) 36pts
3rd Keith Buchanan (16) 34pts
4th John O’Keefe (17) 33pts
Div C (19+)
1st Liz Collier (24) 38pts
2nd John Kittilsen (19) 32pts
3rd Bruce McAdam (22) 31pts
4th Paul Quinn (19) 31pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or
give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

Stafford lands a big one
Phoenix Tuesday Golf Group Fishing Day
Mike Gerrard
Ahoy me matey’s!
A couple of weeks ago a few of the golfing guys of our
group suggested we go fishing, and so at 7 a.m. on Sat. 20th Nov we set sail
from Sattahip into the big blue yonder.
John
Stafford with his prize catch.
The first hour and a quarter we just relaxed and chatted
amongst ourselves until the skipper dropped anchor in a spot I have never
been before (and I have been doing this for 7 years now).
As we managed to catch a few smaller varieties (good for
the frying pan), all of a sudden there was the scream of one of the big rigs
reels!
What a sight, (and what pity we did not have a movie
camera with us). We have all seen it on the TV but to actually watch the
movements of a sailfish jumping in out of the water as it tried in vain to
shed the hook was truly amazing.
Eventually big John Stafford (who had drawn the first
straw for a biggy) managed, with a little help from the skipper, to land the
30 kilo monster.
For the rest of the day there were good catches of
pla-daeng, snapper, a couple of grouper and a small sand shark - all very
tasty fish.
With the weather being very kind on the day and the water
relatively smooth, at about 4 p.m. we had all had enough of a superb day’s
entertainment and instructed the skipper to head on back to terra firma.
Once back on dry land we packed all our gear away and settled down to a
couple of beers on the jetty before making our way back home to watch our
respective football teams either lose (in mine and Keith’s case) or win (as
in others cases).
Tight lines chaps - and keep your rods straight!

Bowlers: Rich, Mio, Konrad, Nok, Ooy & Sak.
VFW Post 9876 got back on the winning track by taking
three points from Jack Tar last week. Ooy Pluemkamon did everything she
could do for Jack Tar with a 215 game and 567 series but it was only good
enough to win one point.
Green Tree continued their good play as they gained one
point on first place after winning all four points from Canada. Tue Pettae
bowled a 525 series for Green Tree and Noodle Russell had a 507.
Brother D moved past Café Kronborg into third place after
they won three points from USMC and Café Kronborg lost three to House of the
Golden Coin. Sak bowled a 208 game and 521 series for Brother D. Mio Aamlid
bowled a 201 game and 511 series for Golden Coin.
Sabai Friday won three points from Bavaria to move into a tie for fifth
place. Nok Kennedy bowled a 206 game for Sabai and Rich Murphy had a 200
game for Bavaria. Long time bowler Konrad Foerg, bowling as a pacer, had a
good day with a 220 game and 593 series. Well done Konrad!
