The Royal Thai Navy helped family members and friends
of late Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej scatter his ashes in Sattahip
Bay on Nov. 16.
Samak died of liver cancer in November 2009, and last
week, after a suitable time of morning, relatives brought his ashes to
the Royal Luang Kraburee ship at the Laemtien Port at Sattahip Naval
Base. They then sailed into the bay where his ashes were released with
Baisri floats and colorful flowers.
Samak was admitted to Bamrungrad Hospital in Bangkok
for cancer treatment, and then died later Nov. 24, 2009. On Nov. 14,
2010, HM the King graciously designated HRH Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn
as His Majesty’s Representative to preside over the funeral and
cremation ceremony of the late premier at Thepsirintrawas Rajaworawiharn
Temple.
Vice Adm. Khanat Thongpoon, commander of Navy Region
1, met the group of 300 relatives and friends led by Samak’s wife Surat.
Samak was born on June 13, 1935 and entered politics
in 1973. He is survived by his wife and twin daughters.
