Mysterious death attributed to ‘no bananas’
Suwan Boonyen, 42, of Saraburi, succumbed to illness and
passed away last week in his home in Moo Ban Rong Poh, Banglamung.
Local police called to the scene found Suwan lying dead on the floor near
the door of his house. The Sawang Boriboon Foundation performed an initial
examination of the body and found no wounds or evidence of foul play.
Officers learned from neighbours that the man had had a high fever for
several days. Instead of tending to his illness, neighbours said that he
refused to rest and walked around in an agitated state. He complicated
matters by refusing to sleep.
The day before he died, he finally took some cold medication, but his fever
did not break. His death was preceded by seizures, and since his housemates
were not home at the time, there was no one to help him.
The residents of the area speculated that Suwan’s name, beginning with an
‘S’, was a ‘haunted’ letter and he died because he refused to propitiate the
spirits in his house by hanging up bananas or doing penance. It is a common
belief among Thai residents that national profits have proclaimed this year
a bad year for anyone who’s name begins with ‘S’, and all those that have
such a given name should appease the spirits with bananas.
Suwan’s death caused a great stir among residents of the area who had ‘S’ in
their names, and their was a stampede to the market and a frenzy of banana
sales.
