PSC helps to mould future badminton champions

Future badminton stars show
their skills on court.
William Macey
The YWCA complex is situated next to the Amata Golf Course and has
been the hosts to the National Badminton Championships of Thailand for many
years, as has the involvement of the Pattaya Sports Club. The hall has 5
badminton courts which is perfect to accommodate 700 children over a 5 day
period, all challenging for the right to be called ‘champion’.
We arrived in time to see the semi finals and finals of the boys and girls
doubles championships and could only marvel at the standard attained, not
only by the older groups, but those as young as 9 years old. The
competitiveness, speed, energy and control of the players was amazing. Did I
have that much energy when I was their age?

William Macey, Charity
Chairman of the PSC, presents medals to the under-16 girls winners.
Thailand has a well deserved reputation in world
badminton with a number of male and female players featuring in the world’s
top 20 in their respective groups. And who could forget the achievements of
Ratchanock Inthanon who became the world’s youngest ever world champion at
the age of 18 in 2013 and made her name by winning this particular
championship two years in a row when she was 14 and 15 years old before
going on to greater things.
Khun Ying, the head of the National Badminton Association of Thailand, was
there to present some of the prizes and to congratulate the winners as were
representatives of Pattaya Sports Club and recorded by Thai TV and
newspapers.
Pattaya Sports Club is well known for its charitable activities but it is
worth mentioning the fact that PSC also support sports in all its forms and
encourages Thai children to indulge in sport, not for the long-term health
benefits, but also as a way to get them to keep to the straight and narrow
throughout their lives.

Navy sink Dolphins in local derby

Pattaya United and Siam Navy
FC are shown in action during their Thai Division 1 fixture at the Navy
Stadium in Sattahip, Saturday, Oct 18.
Pattaya United slipped closer to the Division 1
relegation zone last weekend after falling to a 1-0 defeat at promotion
chasing Siam Navy in Sattahip on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute when Brazilian midfielder Felipe
Ferreira burst through the center of the United defence and calmly chipped
the ball past the advancing Sangkla and into the United net.
The Dolphins continued to struggle up front and rarely threatened the
opposition goal during a disappointing first half performance. They came out
with more vigour in the second period but were unlucky when Khana’s shot
cannoned off the top of the Navy crossbar and out to safety in the 66th
minute.
United thought they had salvaged a point from the game in the last minute of
normal time as Cristiano Lopes’ header rebounded off the underside of the
bar and crossed the goal line, but the score was ruled out as the Brazilian
was flagged for being in an offside position.
Pattaya need to rediscover their scoring touch when they entertain Roi Et at
the Nongprue Stadium this coming Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
At the top of the Premier League standings, the season looks set for an
exciting conclusion as Chonburi remain just 2 points behind leaders Buriram
United with 4 matches left to play. The Sharks rebounded from their midweek
loss to Army by defeating Sisaket 2-1 at the Chonburi Stadium and also took
advantage of Buriram’s surprising home 2-2 draw with Osotspa. Chonburi’s
winning goal came via a 48th minute close range header from midfielder
Bavorn Tapla.
The Sharks were due to play away at Osotspa on Wednesday this week and will
face Bangkok United in Chonburi this coming Sunday at 7 p.m. Buriram by
contrast have an away fixture at Bangkok United followed by a home game
against Chainat.

Golf ace Pornanong hopes to celebrate 25th birthday in style

Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum
(left) is shown receiving the 2013 winner’s trophy from Raynald Aeschlimann,
vice president, International Sales Director of Omega, as Mohamed Juma
Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi, looks on.
LPGA star Pornanong Phatlum is hoping to cap off her
silver jubilee birthday celebrations in style when she returns to defend her
title at the 2014 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club from
December 10 to 13.
The Thai ace, who turns 25 a few days before the event, conjured up a piece
of magic on the final hole in 2013, drilling her 54 degree wedge to two feet
of the cup for birdie to win the title on her debut in the season-ending
Ladies European Tour event.
She believes fond memories of her victory will drive her to the success she
needs to emulate the feat of Swedish legend Annika Sorenstam, the only
player to have won back-to-back titles since the inception of the Omega
Dubai Ladies Masters in 2006.
“This (Omega Dubai Ladies Masters) has the energy of a major on the Ladies
European Tour. I really enjoyed playing in Dubai last year, and winning it
on my first visit made it even more special,” said Phatlum, who has already
crossed the $1 million mark in earnings since joining the LPGA Tour in 2009.
“Of course, it will be great fun to be back in Dubai, a city I like very
much, and have an opportunity to win two in a row, but I will try not to
think about it too much. They have such a strong field every year and anyone
can win at any time,” said the world number 33, who boasts 10 professional
wins, including two on the Ladies European Tour.
Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in Dubai, said: “We will
be delighted to welcome our champion back. Pornanong’s dramatic rise to the
upper echelon of professional golf shows how much Thailand’s investment in
developing golf infrastructure is paying off handsomely. With a lot of young
and talented golfers emerging in the country, I won’t be surprised if
Thailand becomes one of the strongest golfing nations in the near future.”

St. Andrew’s School producing elite athletes

Kanoon and her Thai teammates.
Kevin McGee
St Andrews International School, Green Valley prides itself, not
only on its academic successes, but also on the quality of its sports
programme and the results the students obtain. In the past few months
however there are a couple of secondary students who have risen to an elite
level in their respective sports.
Chayanit (Kanoon) Wangmahaporn in Year 12 recently qualified to be a member
of the Thailand Ladies Golf Association Amateur Team. After the qualifying
round, Kanoon was picked to represent Thailand and compete in 31st Malaysian
Amateur Ladies Open 2014. The tournament took place on 12-14 August, 2014
and Kanoon came 2nd in the individual event (only 1 shot behind the winner.)
With her playing partner, Kanoon also won the team trophy by an amazing 23
shots which was a great performance. Kanoon is very proud to be a part of
the Thailand team and St. Andrews as a school is very proud of Kanoon. In
the future, Kanoon says she would like to study at a US University and play
in the NCAA golf competition.

Shanique and her sister at the Jr. NBA
competition.
Another sporting star is Shanique Lucas in Year 9 who from October 11–16,
2014 was invited to travel to China to be a part of a Junior NBA competition
being staged there.
Shanique explains about her busy basketballing summer:
“The first 2 weeks of my summer holiday were spent at a basketball camp at
the American School of Bangkok where I was a part of the all-star team. I
also received both the hot-shot and MVP (Most Valuable Player) awards in my
group as well.
“After the basketball camp I participated in the first round of the Jr. NBA
competition which I passed and then I stayed at a Thai school where my
teammates and I trained in preparation for the National Championship. In
between my training sessions I also had to compete in the other rounds of
the Jr. NBA competition where the number of girls left in the competition
decreased from 40 to 24 and then finally to 4. Fortunately I was lucky
enough to be one of the final 4 girls who got chosen to travel to Beijing.”

B Flight
1st Mick Coghlan (24) 36pts
2nd Brian Cooper (26) 35pts
3rd Jim Elphick (26) 34pts
Once again the conditions proved to be a little harder than most would have
wished for, although the condition of the course could not be faulted, with
the greens playing very true and showing that it would not be long before
they rival Green Valley and Khao Kheow for their speed. Again there was a
fair turn out for the day’s competition, which required two flights.
B Flight provided the man of the match in the shape of Mick Coghlan, who was
the only player to play to his par. Brian ‘Minnie’ Cooper managed to squeeze
into the silver spot a shot adrift, with Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick a further
shot back.
The boys in A Flight who can actually play the game found the going tough,
with Ireland’s Tom Gorey standing atop of the podium with 34 points. Tom was
trailed up the podium steps by JP Maffray and Aussie star Bob Watson in one
stroke increments.
No surprise there were no2’s were recorded so a rollover to Wednesday.

fired a best of the day 39 points. Thierry was one clear of Paul Smith. The
bronze step on the podium went to a count back between Dave Stockman and
Freddy Starbeck and Dave did the unthinkable and left Freddy speechless.
Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’ Jeffreys was top of the heap in B Flight with 34
points. Trailing Mike two shots back was Tommy the Irish rover’ Byrne,
leaving Marcos Earp with 31 points to tidy up the flight.

ISC Early Years 3 students learn Muay Thai

The trainer ran the students through a series of stretches and
warm ups.
The Early Years 3 (Reception) classes at the International
School of Chonburi (ISC) have been traveling around the world in their hot air
balloons. Along the way they have had tea with the Queen in England, done
Rangoli patterns in India and eaten lots of food.
They recently “returned” to Thailand and “landed” at the Sityodtong Muay Thai
boxing camp. The trainer ran the students through a series of stretches and warm
ups before teaching the Muay Thai moves.
The highlight was getting in the ring and practicing with the trainers. There
may be some future Muay Thai stars in EY3!

Pattavia gives up good scores
PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort
Jeff & Jonathan roam the fairway.
Tuesday, Oct. 14, Pattavia - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Pattavia, with the course in overall good
condition, with fairways rolling out some, and greens rolling truly. The
infamous pace of the greens has been tamed, to accommodate a more user friendly
situation, but personally I think it’s a pity, as that was the courses main
defence. Takes a lot of the course management aspect away from the game here,
but it is the same for everybody though, so onward and upward.
Unusual situation with 3 players tied on 37 points at the head of the field,
which following count back the results were Jeff Wylie (8) 20, Paddy Devereux
(24) 17 and Jonathan Pratt (13) 16. Willem Lasonder (19) was right in the mix at
halfway with 19 points, but was unable to keep it going.
Near pins were looking like a clean sweep to Jonathan, however Jeff got the 17th
to thwart his bid.
Thursday, Oct. 16, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Thursday’s venue was Treasure Hill, in an attempt to gain some
insight for the upcoming PSC Monthly Tournament. To facilitate this, we had
players using different tees, and there was some debate as to how best to ensure
fairness for all. Jonathan, playing from the white tees, did play well,
especially early in the round, and his handicap will fall when he finds a way to
keep his form for 18 holes.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country
Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres,
with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is generally
played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on
both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies &
seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 0890941841 for
scheduling or enquiries.

Pierre conjures up victory at the Valley
PSC Golf from The Golf Club

Some of the Laem Chabang Crew on the first tee.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Oct. 13, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Pierre Bietry (16) 36pts
2nd Andy Makara (28) 35pts
T3rd Thierry Danzas (21) 34pts
T3rd Yui Bietry (8) 34pts
T3rd Wayne Cottrell (12) 34pts
The signup sheet was full once again as our regular Monday venue of Green
Valley proves to be so popular. We all love this course but the only thing I
still can’t get my head around is the hole numbering. I think this current
system is probably working out to be the best and the flow seems to be
working just fine now.
The course was in great shape as usual. There have been many improvements to
the cart paths over the summer months and when that is all finished, RGV
will be perfect.
Scoring was certainly on the sensible side and we had a trio at 34 with Yui,
Thierry and Wayne (your August Medal winner) all hitting that number.
Regular Andy Makara did well on the day and his 35 was good enough to snatch
a sole second. Winner, winner poulet dinner went to our long time friend M.
Pierre Bietry, the only golfer to shoot to his handicap! He’s a lucky man to
have Yui as both a golf partner and a life partner. Bien joué mon ami!
Wednesday, Oct. 15, Laem Chabang A & C (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (11) 33pts
2nd Walter Baechli (17) 32pts
3rd Ray Powell (15) 32pts
This was a well-anticipated venue as we booked this last day of the summer
special over 2 months ago. The weather was near perfect and with the A and C
courses on the agenda it was a golf day to look forward to.

Phil Smedley and Ray Powell.
The course was in great condition and the clubhouse is coming along nicely
with a date of Dec. 31 for completion. We still had the private hotel rooms
to change and shower in, which was a nice change from the jammed up
conditions elsewhere.
The first nine seemed to go all so well for just about everyone. The A
course was forgiving and calm. And then there was the C course, a much
tougher challenge with the heat of the midday sun to cope with also. It was
here that many fell to only a few Stableford points on the back and the
reason the final scores were probably not our best.
Ray Powell is back! Escaping the depths of an English winter, Ray is back
with us for the season. This last week has seen many of our regulars
returning to the fold so you will be seeing more familiar faces here soon.
Ray had the same score as our colourful buddy Walter Baechli and with 32
points each they shared second place.
Making just one more putt than the other boys, our own Golf Captain Phil
Smedley rose to the top with a big red 33 circled at the top of his card. It
had been a few weeks since Phil had won and good to see him back in form.

Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Preecha, Bill, Aht &
Tao.
Only two more weeks remaining in this league
and four teams are in the running for a trophy. First place Indiana and second
place Bavaria both won four points this week and third place Canada dropped down
a bit by losing three. Green Bottle has an outside chance of winning the third
place trophy but needs some luck.
Preecha, who just returned from a friendly bowling tournament upcountry, led
Indiana to a four point win over Brother D with a 590 series and games of 193,
213 and 184. La Montgomery bowled a 524 for Indiana.
Wade Meyers was best for Bavaria with a 513 series to lead his team to a four
point win over Balloon. Aht Johansson bowled a 206 game for Balloon.
Green Tree took three points from Canada led by Tao’s 213 game and 529 series.
Bill Gibson, who seems to be getting his old form back, bowled a 203 game and
508 series, 628 with handicap, for Green Tree. Tue Pettae bowled a 548 series
for Canada.
The next 30 week league will begin in three to four weeks and we would love to
have new bowlers join us. You do not need to be a good bowler, just get started
and I am sure you will improve. Show up at PS Bowl above TOPS supermarket at
13:30 on Friday and inform La Montgomery that you want to be on a team. Teams
are picked by a blind draw.

The Singha Amazing Thailand
Caddy Championship grows from strength to strength.
In our report on the Singha Amazing Thailand Caddy
Championship last week we may have erroneously given the impression that a
field of only 29 caddies took part in the tournament finale held at Siam
Plantation on Oct. 6. There were in fact 134 caddies who played in the
event, with 29 of them coming from other Asian nations including Japan,
China, South Korea, Vietnam and Malaysia.
The year-long competition featured 7 regional finals in Thailand alone, with
over 150 caddies from around the Kingdom taking part in each qualifying
round. This was the fourth year of the Caddy Championship which, with the
support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Singha Corporation, has
witnessed an incredible exponential growth since its debut in 2010/11. The
2015 edition is scheduled to begin in Spring next year.
Pattana - a tough test
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Nik Evans & Dennis Scougal.
Monday, Oct. 13, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Two divisions out today with a cut of 9-20 in division 1 and 21+
in division 2. Playing his socks off lately, Chris Voller topped division 1
with 37 points, beating Terry Madsen on a 20/19 back nine count back.
William Chang took third with 36 after another count back, beating Reijo
Heiskanen 19/16.
Tom Novak was the winner in division 2 with 34 points, one ahead of Burnie
Sinclair in second while Rod Howett claimed third with 32.
Near pins went to Thomas Naughton, Chris Voller, William Chang and Colin
James.
In the ‘2’s, Thomas Naughton birdied the 12th and Colin James the 5th.
Wednesday, Oct. 15, Pattana - Stableford
Our allocated courses today were the C and A nines, which made a
change to the last few rounds played here. We were off the yellow tees as
quite a few people regard the whites are too tough and still the scores
today were low.
Chris Voller won division 1 with 31 points, with Jori in second place on 30
points after beating Lindsay Phillips 11/9 on the back six holes. Heikki
topped division 2 with 29 points, and three players came in with 27 points,
William Chang beating Ray Hucknall and Miss Nut for second on a 17/15/14
back-nine count back.
Near pins were shared between Nik Evans, Don Head, Terry Madsen, Chris
Voller, and Paul Hartley.
Nik Evans and Don Head split the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while in division 2
a rollover ensues to the Emerald on the 27th.
Friday, Oct. 17, Eastern Star - Stableford
This course is still improving throughout, with the exception
being a few greens, but you have to expect this at this time of the year.
Gearing up for the Chiang Mai trip the organiser shot 39 points to win
division 2, a first for a long time. Joe Kubon came in second three points
behind and Paul Hartley was third on 33.
On the podium again, Chris Voller won division 1 with 39 points, Khalifa
Nasser was second three points behind on 36 and the Welsh boy Mike Lewis
came third on 35, beating Don Head and Pete Sumner on a 19/19/16 back-nine
count back.
Near ins were spread around among Mike Lewis, Marty Rock, Dennis Scougal
(2), Glyn Evans, Frank Kelly and John H.
Mike Lewis birdied the 3rd in division 1 and Glyn Evans hits a shot eight
feet from the pin on the 6th and sank the putt for the only ‘2’ in division
2.
At Siam Cats at the presentation there were warm welcome returns to Edward
Bourne, Jim Connelly, Nik Evans and Dennis Scougall.

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Elephant Bar

Wednesday’s podium (from
left): Jon Batty, Andrew Purdie and Wichai Tananusorn.
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Greenwood on Monday,
13th October to play a stableford competition on the A and C courses and
found a course in good condition given the current weather. Preferred lies
were the order of the day but it was not necessary to lift and clean after
every shot.
A healthy four group field signed in with only four cars in the car park -
probably belonging to staff - and an empty course beckoned before tee off
time.
As “run” was limited and a strong “two club” wind blew all day scores would
be limited and third place was taken by Mr Len with 33 points, Jesper Hansen
missing out on a podium place by one point for yet another round! In second
was Jon Batty who had recorded thirty points by the fourteenth tee but only
managed five more in a disappointing finish. For the second round running
Andrew Purdie made his mark with a sub-par round, this time forty points
defying logic on the day. It was a “long” player’s day obviously.
Ken
Page recorded the ‘perfect shot’ at Mountain Shadow.
Jon Batty recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on A2, and Keith
Melbourne enjoyed the bar’s free beer as the non winner of the day. The
Booby Bevy went to Larry Ang for his low score of the day.
The good news is that Greenwood’s special low season rate is continuing
until 31st December and the PGS will certainly be back there soon to take
advantage of the course’s astute business sense and course management
skills.
Purdie’s three-peat
Following a call from Khao Kheow to advise us that they intended coring 18
greens on the day we were scheduled to play, we decided to move our booking
to Eastern Star. The fact that Khao Kheow gave us that option was much
appreciated. We will reciprocate.
The day stayed fine and warm for our four groups. We decided preferred lies
were the order of the day, as large patches of bare ground could be seen on
the fairways, especially in front of greens. To be fair, the white GUR
markings were in evidence, but they did not cover all patches. The putting
surfaces were in the last stages of recovery from recent coring, and still
held liberal amounts of sand.
This course always plays tough; a tribute to its length (6575) and the fact
that the penalty for straying too far left or right (water and OB) are
severe. In short, 36 point normally wins here and that is exactly what
Andrew Purdie scored to give him his third win in a row. The big hitting
Aussie will soon feel the handicapper’s wrath, which will please him and his
playing partners.
Coming a close second was the consistent Jon Batty, and playing partner
Wichai Tananusorn, ensured the three-ball completed the podium through his
third placing. This same playing group also accounted for the ‘2’s of the
day, with Andrew birdying the 13th and Wichai the 17th.
Back at the Elephant Bar, John Tallett drew the lucky beer draw. The booby
bevy went to Alan Flynn for the mishap he suffered even before departing for
golf; giving him and all of us a reminder never to take security for
granted. Luckily very little was lost, so a cheap lesson was provided – a
reminder to keep your door locked.
1st Andrew Purdie (11) 36pts
2nd Jon Batty (9) 35pts
3rd Wichai Tananusorn (8) 33pts
Ken’s perfect shot
Friday 17 March saw the Pattaya Golf Society take four groups to
Mt. Shadow, to play a stableford competition from the blue tees. The course
was well presented, the fairways offered run whilst the putting greens were
nearly back to the normal Mt Shadow standard, following recent maintenance.
It was good to see the lakes once again full of water.
Play started early as the course appeared to be light on customers. One
group didn’t have long to wait until witnessing the day’s highlight - a
Hole-in-One on the par-3 eighth. Scot Ken Page holing out with a superbly
hit 6-iron which travelled past the hole before spinning back and into the
cup! Ken’s caddie had insisted on the choice of club, twice overriding Ken’s
preference for a 7-iron. Good value, these caddies.
There were two ‘2’s; amazingly, one on the par-4 tenth, scored by Larry Gibb
after holing out from his second shot. The other ‘2’, a more conventional
one, came on the 15th by David Thomas. Both these feats, however, counted
for nothing as the ‘2’s pot was awarded to Ken Page.
Given the well-presented course and good conditions, scoring was modest. A
tight result saw the four podium placegetters split by just two stableford
points.
Back at the Elephant Bar, welcomes were made to four new members; Brad
Lewis, Paul Herring and Dave Angus-Crouch, all from NSW Australia, and Larry
Gibb from Singapore. The lucky beer draw was picked up by newbie, Brad
Lewis, whilst the booby bevy went to Keith Melbourne following his “mare” of
a round. The presentation was concluded by the awarding of an IPGC
Hole-in-One golf bag to Ken Page, who then rang the bell for all the golfers
present.
T1st Dave Lehane (15) 34pts
T1st Larry Gibb (23) 34pts
3rd David Thomas (8) 33pts
4th Dave Angus-Crouch (16) 32pts
Congratulations to the winners, but a special mention goes to Ken Page, for
executing golf’s perfect shot. Well done, Ken!

Carnage at Eastern Star
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
The weather may have improved this past week but my golf
certainly didn’t and neither did it for my three playing partners,
it was like watching Nightmare on Elm Street, or should that be
Nightmare at Eastern Star?
Mike
Sanders - winner at Khao Kheow.
All began fairly quietly except for my opening drive onto the
neighbouring fairway, in fact by the sixth hole the caddies were
racing ahead to distribute hard hats to any other players in the
vicinity. The other three soon descended to my level, one started
duck hooking or slicing everything out of bounds or into the water
(there is a lot of water at Eastern Star), one couldn’t putt to save
his life and four putts became his norm and the other guy who is
normally brilliant around the greens started duffing twenty and
thirty yard chips three feet ahead of him.
By the end the caddies were calling the Samaritans or the Thai
equivalent to rush to the course before a mass suicide took place.
Discussing things rationally after the debacle was concluded we all
agreed it was the worst golf we had ever played and that somehow we
had all managed collectively to upset the golfing gods and that
there were dark forces in the area.
Elsewhere everything proceeded as normal.
Monday, Oct. 13, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Monday saw the TRGG head off to play Khao Kheow (C and B
courses), never an easy course as the final scores reflected.
Mike Sanders, who has experienced his own golfing nightmares in the
distant past, held it all together and marched confidently to the
top of the leaderboard with a very conservative 34 points. He was
closely followed by big Martin Cooper, who was in turn closely
followed home by Tim Dalton (not literally).
1st Mike Sanders (6) 34pts
2nd Martin Cooper (3) 33pts
3rd Tim Dalton (19) 32pts
Wednesday, Oct. 15, Eastern Star - Stableford
On Wednesday you will already have gathered we were
playing Eastern Star and as the TRGG golfers headed down the first
fairway nobody could have forecast the carnage that would follow.
Half the field failed to make it to 30 points and there is something
really sad watching grown men cry and wandering round in a complete
daze.
Mike
Rushant - winner at Treasure Hill.
Some men, of course, are made from sterner stuff. Jim Sykes is one
such guy and he took everything the course had to throw at him and
held off all challengers to finish top dog. Mike Sanders had another
good day and was only beaten to top spot on count back. Big hitting
Jim Cleaver made it into third place.
1st Jim Sykes (11) 35pts
2nd Mike Sanders (6) 35pts
3rd Jim Cleaver (9) 33pts
Friday, Oct. 17, Treasure Hill - Stableford
The TRGG rounded off the week on Friday at another tough
course, Treasure Hill. Did I say tough, not for recently returned
Mike Rushant. Pocket battleship Mike stormed off with first place
when he recorded an amazing 41 points. He left all others in his
wake and it was only Neil Bramley who posted a more than respectable
37 points who got anywhere near him. David Booth also had a good day
finishing third on 35.
1st Mike Rushant (13) 41pts
2nd Neil Bramley (8) 37pts
3rd David Booth (14) 35pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would
like to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus
Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee
and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice
board.

Ted & Thierry lead the way
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Burapha winners.
Monday, Oct. 13, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It was a fine & sunny Monday morning as we made our way to
The Growling Swan to prepare for departure to the Pleasant Valley Golf
Course and we had 20 golfers signed up to play.
We welcomed John Davis back from the UK and also Gerd Riedler who has
been in Europe for about 5 weeks. Welcomes were also handed out to
Pattaya business man Freddy Starbeck and his mate Thierry Petrement and
it was time to say goodbye to Martin “Toddy” Todd who is off back to
Mandurah in Western Australia.
Thierry
Petrement & Ted Morris.
When we arrived at the almost deserted course we all had 650 baht green
fee vouchers and checking in was quite speedy and we were ready to send
our first fourball away 15 minutes early at 9.45 am. The course was
fairly wet with no carts allowed on the fairways so we allowed preferred
lies through the greens and we proceeded at a steady pace but found the
greens a bit “iffy” and quite slow at times.
The weather was good with no sign of rain but it was as usual hot &
humid which slowed us down somewhat and we ended up with a slow round of
four hours & forty five minutes but the company was excellent.
Newcomer Thierry Petrement, fresh from his win in Chiang Mai was the
winner in A Division with 39 points and with 3 golfers on 37 points a
count back was required to determine second & third places. The result
was that Mike Allidi (18 point back nine) took second spot from John
Pierrel (17 point back nine) in third place with Takeshi Hakozaki (16
point back nine) just missing out.
In B Division it was 2 in a row for veteran Ted Morris who was declared
the winner with 41 points. It was very tight for the minor placings with
four golfers on 37 points and after the count back second place was
awarded to Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (20 point back nine, 14
points on the last 6 holes & 7 points on the last 3 holes) with Roy
“Plums” Dayton (20 point back nine, 14 points on the last 6 holes & 6
points on the last 3 holes) securing third spot. Mark “Westy” West (20
point back nine & 13 points on the last 6 holes) and Duangjai “Kae”
Tusagad (16 points on the last 6 holes) unfortunately missed out on a
podium placing.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award for the worst score on the day was won by
the returning John Davis.
Division A (0-12)
1st Thierry Petrement (12) 39pts
2nd Mike Allidi (2) 37pts
3rd John Pierrel (11) 37pts
Division B (13+)
1st Ted Morris (15) 41pts
2nd Alain Taddei (15) 37pts
3rd Roy Dayton (25) 37pts
Near Pins: 5th – Mike Allidi, 8th – John Pierrel, 13th – Frank Donnelly,
17th – Mark West
Long Putts: 9th – Kevin Waycott, 18th – Mike Allidi
Thursday, Oct. 16, Burapha – Stableford
Playing the A & B nines from the white markers, the starter
sent us on our way with a relish not dissimilar to well known
entertainer Meatloaf when he has an uninpeded run at the party pie
table. The weather was pleasant and the course in good nick.
The greens were quicker than a Sumo wrestler slipping down a mud slide
and the short rough, which is usually thicker than mourners at brewer’s
wake had been trimmed.
On the sixth tee Bob Akapita said to Mike Gosden, “here’s a bag of
onions to go with the tripe your playing” – he was correct.
At presentations Peter Grey welcomed Rudy Regenass from South
Africa,Makito Homma from England and Ernie Picken who resides in
Melbourne.
Peter Grey also mentioned Peter Blackburn was no longer involved at the
Growling Swan, however thanked him for his efforts over the last two
years and wished him well in his future endeavours.
The one grade today saw Walter Baechli score a fine 42 points to finish
on top. Second place went to Makito Homma on 38, third to Andrew Allen
on 37, while Graham Rice, Sal Brizzi, Bob Akapita, John Davis and Ron
Gillett filled the minor places in one shot increments.
The NAGA award went to John Parkinson who was heard to comment, “I
lurched all over the course like a tramp steamer in the Bay of Biscay
during a severe storm”.
1st Walter Baechli (17) 42pts
2nd Makito Homma (17) 38pts
3rd Andrew Allen (32) 37pts
4th Graham Rice (12) 36pts
5th Sal Brizzi (6) 35pts

Habgood prevails at Pleasant Valley
PSC Golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Peter Habgood.
Monday, Oct. 13, Mt. Shadow –
Stableford
Four groups of golfers today, and when we arrived at the
Mountain Shadow course it appeared to be deserted, with no other
golfers in sight anywhere on the course. The weather was bright and
sunny and in contrast to the last couple of weeks, there were no
rain clouds on the horizon as the first group set off to tackle this
challenging layout.
The course was in good condition although several bunkers hadn’t
been raked, and the caddies didn’t appear to want to go near them
which is a disappointing trend.
The leading four ball quickly opened up a significant gap ahead of
the following groups and eventually returned to the clubhouse in
exactly three and a half hours after a great round of golf in almost
ideal conditions.
As usual at this venue, it was a day when the lower handicappers
came to the fore, with Alan Freeman once again taking the top spot,
one point clear of Tony Robbins. Peter Allen was the exception to
the rule, making his first appearance on the podium in fourth place
in what was his eighth game with the Bunker Boys, and he also
collected his maiden near pin prize to complete a successful day.
1st Alan Freeman (3) 34pts
2nd Tony Robbins (13) 33pts
3rd John Graham (11) 30pts
4th Peter Allen (36) 29pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Peter Allen and Alan Freeman (2).
Wednesday, Oct. 15, Green Valley – Medal
A surprisingly small turnout of golfers today for our
medal competition at the usually popular Green Valley course. When
we arrived at the course the car park was busy, but on reaching the
first tee we were able to tee off a few minutes early, and
throughout the round, the leading group didn’t catch up with any
groups ahead of them.
The course was in it’s normally good condition, but the greens had
been lightly sanded and were consequently variable in speed.
We welcomed back Ross Schiffke for his first game since his recent
marriage, and he celebrated in style by taking first place, beating
John Graham on a count back. PJ Redmond was making his debut from
the silver tees, and the shorter course distance enabled him to get
back into contention for a place on the podium after a long absence.
Previously the Bunker Boys have been reluctant to introduce the
possibility of older players playing in competition from the silver
tees, but PJ’s success proves the decision to be correct, and
provides a genuine opportunity for new (old?) faces to challenge the
usual suspects.
Alan Freeman continued his domination of the near pin prizes, taking
three on the day, with only Al Collinge preventing him from chalking
up another clean sweep.
1st Ross Schiffke (19) net 72
2nd John Graham (11) net 72
3rd P.J. Redmond (23) net 73
Near Pins: Al Collinge and Alan Freeman (3).
Friday, Oct. 17, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It was another bright, sunny morning, and when we arrived
at the course after fighting our way through the ever worsening
traffic on the 7 motorway, the clubhouse was quiet.
The first group teed off on schedule but soon caught up with the
golfers ahead on the 6th hole. From there on the round was painfully
slow as the whole course was held up by a six-ball group who were
determined to get their money’s worth, completely oblivious of the
stacked up course behind them.
The course was not in its best condition, appearing to have suffered
badly from the recent rains, but also from neglect, with several
bunkers in very poor condition and the greens slow and bumpy.
Peter Habgood was the only player to play to his handicap on the day
to take first place ahead of Tony Robbins and Geoff Parker, both
with 31 points, but with Tony taking second place on a count back
over the last six holes.
Near pins went to Tore Eliassen and Alan Freeman (2), with the
island hole prize being shared between Les Hall and Alan Freeman
when we were unable to separate them.
Following the presentation back at The Ranch, Alan Freeman
generously rang the bell for his fellow golfers to celebrate the
18.5 near pin prizes that he’s won during his ten game trip (the
half was today) – he was departing on Sunday, so now everyone else
can look forward to getting back into the frame!
1st Peter Habgood (20) 36pts
2nd Tony Robbins (13) 31pts
3rd Geoff Parker (15) 31pts
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who
play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire
station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a
friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and
new players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or
080 605 5663 for all enquiries or go to website:

Bartlett back in the winner’s circle
PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Auke Engelkes with
Sakulthip (Thip) and her daughter.
Wednesday, Oct. 15, Green Valley -
Stableford
Green Valley, our normal venue for Wednesday, was in great
condition and even though the greens had been cored and lightly sanded,
they were still as fast as you can get.
There was no rain and it got a bit hot out there in places but it was
quite comfortable. The scores were pretty good also with the majority of
the field in the 30 plus region. Once again there were no ‘2’s recorded
and with a field of 24 players we didn’t hear any stories of the ones
that should have been.
Alan
Bartlett.
There was a count back on 34 points between Roger Ison and William Macey
for fifth place, with William getting the nod with the better back nine.
Fourth spot went to Bob Philp with 36 points, third to Jonathan Pratt
with 37, beaten once again on a count back by Sakulthip (Thip), and
first place went to Auke Engelkes with a fine 40 points.
Friday, Oct. 17, Burapha – Stableford
Burapha was at its best, with greens so fast that you only
had to look at the ball and it moved three feet. And apart from one
gentleman whom shall remain nameless, every score was a good one. The
course was in great condition and it was almost impossible to get
anything other than a good lie.
There was an extra large tournament on C and D loops so we were put on A
and B and we flowed around in just over three and a half hours. Alan
Bartlett managed to get the only ‘2’, they told me it was a forty-foot
putt, anyway it doesn’t matter how it got there it must have been a
great putt and a big thank you from everyone for the bell ring mate.
Third place went to Rick Culley with 35 points while in second on a
count back was Alan Bartlett with 38. Beating him on that count back was
his playing partner Brian Maddox, also with 38 points. It was Brian’s
best round in a long time, well done mate!
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411
if you are looking for a game.

Mike & Kenny set the standard
PSC Golf from Café Kronborg

Mike Winfield (left) with Dave
Richardson.
Monday, Oct. 13, Pattaya C.C. -
Stableford
1st Mike Winfield (21) 43pts
2nd Niels Hansen (13) 38pts
3rd Dave Richardson (27) 34pts
4th Karl Beter (30) 30pts
Today it was Pattaya Country Club and we teed-off 30 minutes early in sunny
and dry conditions with a bit of wind in the later stages of the round. The
course was in good shape but all the greens have been cross hatched and
sanded, however they putted ok.
Kenny
Chung.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 4 hours and 40 minutes a welcome went
out to Bryan Bringloe from the UK and goodbye to Karl Beter, off to
Cambodia.
Mike Winfield was the winner with a blistering 43 points, five ahead of
Niels Hansen in second while Dave Richardson and Karl Beter completed the
podium.
Thursday, Oct. 16, Bangpakong - Stableford
1st Kenny Chung (23) 43pts
2nd Bryan Bringloe (10) 41pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (14) 39pts
The Bangpakong course was in fine condition as always and Kenny Chung took
advantage to post a winning 43 points, however he was pushed all the way by
Bryan Bringloe who finished second on 41. Takeshi Hakozaki took third a
further two back.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 3 hours and 50 minutes we said
goodbye to Takeshi who was heading back to Japan for a couple of weeks.

Mann makes hay in Chiang Mai
PSC Golf from The Outback Golf Bar

From left: Bernie
Stafford, Wayne Waywood, Steve Mann & Kim Danboise in Chiang Mai.
Monday, Oct. 13 – Maejo G.C. -
Stableford
The nineteen players from Chiang Rai were joined by nine more
who flew up today, giving us a full field of 28 for the first round of
the 10th Chiang Mai Challenge beginning at Maejo on Monday.
The weather returned to normal, dry and sunny, as we left the hotel at
8.30am for the 25 minute drive to the Maejo course; the caddies were
pleased to see us and the course appeared in excellent condition.
Generally it was but the greens were very tricky as nobody played better
than handicap.

Brendan Cope.
In Div A Aussie visitor, Tony Harrop shared 36pts
with Steve Mann, gaining first place on count back, with Wayne Waywood
in third (35) and Keith Etherington (32) in fourth.
Bernie Stafford filled the top spot in Div B, also with 36pts, followed
home by the big hitting Brendan Cope, who scored 35pts with 5 wipes,
Suzi Lawton, also on 35, and Ron Carter, over from the Philippines with
B1, on 34.
There were two ‘2’s from Steve Mann (7th) and Keith Etherington
Div A (0-15)
1st Tony Harrop (10) 36pts
2nd Stephen Mann (11) 36pts
3rd Wayne Waywood (15) 35pts
4th Keith Etherington (07) 32pts
Div B (16+)
1st Bernie Stafford (16) 36pts
2nd Brendan Cope (25) 35pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (25) 35pts
4th Ron Carter (27) 34pts
Tuesday, Oct. 14, Alpine Resort - Stableford
We woke up to brilliant weather again and left for the
renowned Alpine Resort. The course is a little over 30 minutes away and
was remarkably quiet when we arrived. A beautifully presented track but
beware, this course has teeth and believe me, it bites; one of our
low-markers commented that this was as tough as he has ever played. Just
one month ahead of an Asian Tour event, the rough is diabolical and the
greens difficult to read; one foot of the fairway and your ball slips
away to unseen depths.

Bernie Stafford (left)
with Tony Harrop.
So bad was it, that the course rating for the day was
79! That means that our best score of the day, 33pts, attained by Wayne
Waywood in Div A, was in fact 4 under par! Kim played very steadily to
take second with 31; Mr Consistent on these tours, Steve Mann was third
on 30 whilst Keith Buchanan was fourth with 29.
In Div B, 30pts was enough to earn the win, coming from big hitting
Brendan Cope with only 12 holes counting having wiped the other six.
Anton Rowbottam got the better of Ron Carter on c/b, both with 28 and
Suzi (25) was fourth.

Welcome back to John
Scarlett (left) and the boys.
The strangest thing about the set-up here is that all
the indexes had been changed since last year with two very long par
fives being changed to 17 and 18; somewhat dramatically as the Index 18
used to be Index 1 and 17 used to be 4.
There was only one ‘2’ from Eddy Beilby
Div A (0-5)
1st Wayne Waywood (15) 33pts
2nd Kim Danboise (15) 31pts
3rd Stephen Mann (11) 30pts
4th Keith Buchanan (15) 29pts
Div B (16+)
1st Brendan Cope (25) 30pts
2nd Anton Rowbottam (18) 28pts
3rd Ron Carter (27) 28pts
4th Suzi Lawton (25) 25pts
Thursday, Oct. 16, Chiang Mai Highlands – Stableford
The course at Chiang Mai Highlands was presented in great
condition in beautiful golfing weather. The caddies came out in line as
usual to greet our bus as it arrived and the check-in at the pro-shop
was easy, with only 2 of the 28 players opting to walk.
Steve Mann blew the field away with a stunning 46pts (73 off the bat)
playing the sort of golf we all know he is capable of. He’s always a
good bet on these tours as he seems to focus so well and very little
disturbs him. A distant second was Bob Maloney, who had been crook most
of the week but played much nearer his best today with 40pts, ahead of
Keith Buchanan (39) and Peter LeNoury, who produced his best round this
tour, also with 39.
Bernie Stafford like many suffered in the rough at Alpine but bounced
back today to score 37pts, enough to win Div B from Ron Carter on count
back. Third was Anton Rowbottam (36) and Ed Turner played his best round
of the tour to scramble into fourth with 35.
So the overall winner of the 10th Chiang Mai Challenge was Steve Mann
(112 pts) from Wayne Waywood (100pts) with Kim Danboise & Ron Carter
sharing third place, both with 99.
We shall of course return here again next year when the new nine holes
here is expected to be finished as construction is already well
underway, as is the much needed extension to the changing rooms and the
expansion of the outside restaurant area.
There were six more ‘2’s from Keith Buchanan, Peter LeNoury & Stephen
Mann (2nd), Bob Maloney & Barney Clarkson (7th) and Tony Harrop (14th).
Div A (0-15)
1st Stephen Mann (11) 46pts
2nd Bob Maloney (13) 40pts
3rd Keith Buchanan (15) 39pts
4th Peter LeNoury (10) 39pts
Div B (16+)
1st Bernie Stafford (16) 37pts
2nd Ron Carter (27) 37pts
3rd Anton Rowbottam (18) 36pts
4th Ed Turner (21) 35pts
Overall Result
1st Stephen Mann 112pts
2nd Wayne Waywood 100pts
T3rd Kim Danboise 99pts
T3rd Ron Carter 99pts
5th Keith Buchanan 98pts
Monday, Oct. 13, Burapha – Stableford
15 scorecards were returned from the whites on the C & D
course at Burapha and welcome back to Noel Taylor.
John Cunningham won Div A with 35pts from Lance Robinson (33) and Bob
Finley (32). Div B went to playing partner Peter Stonebridge on the
lowly 30pt mark, with one of Lance’s mates, Gordon Etheridge, losing out
on c/b and Ivan Plunkett took third on 27.
Gordon Etheridge got the only ‘2’.
Div A (0-14)
1st John Cunningham (06) 35pts
2nd Lance Robinson (13) 33pts
3rd Bob Finley (13) 32pts
Div B (15+)
1st Pete Stonebridge (18) 30 pts
2nd Gordon Etheridge (15) 30 pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (20) 27 pts
Wednesday, Oct. 15, Laem Chabang - Stableford
We played the C & A loops today and out of the 13 players, 10
cards were returned. Welcome to Mike Stennett and brother Paul and also
to Dad.
Lance followed up his second on Monday, going one better with a win here
on 36pts from another in the same group, Martin Burbidge with 33.
Welcome back to Joachi and Michael Wittmaak, Mike getting into third
