More rain, more flooding

Despite repeated promises from City Hall, Pattaya’s infrastructure still cannot keep up with any amount of heavy rain.

Vittaya Yoondorn
About 90 minutes of rain created flooding throughout Pattaya as city drainage pipes struggled to keep up.
The Nov. 26 storm resulted in about 20 cm. of water backing up on Second and Third roads, wreaking havoc with traffic. Motorbikes stalled and cars needed to be pushed out of traffic lanes in some cases.
On Beach Road, businesses coped with about 13 cm of water along the entire length of the promenade. Locals and tourists were seen picking refuse and tree parts out of drains to help them remove the flooding faster.
Shopkeepers said they’re getting used to the flooding, as it occurs with nearly every rain despite repeated promises from public officials to fix infrastructure problems.
