Francis of a sea - sea

Sea Fishing with KPK Food Services Ltd.

Francis Youett with his prize snapper.

Mike Gerrard
Ahoy me hearties!
After a couple of months in dry dock we had two days on the ocean at the end of November. Firstly, Saturday 24th November was for a party organised by Joe Cameron and Jeff Cordiero. A great day was had by all but the elusive big fish still ignored our baits. Never mind, with one guy feeling a little ill all day (good job the sea was not rough) the rest of the guys and gals enjoyed a lovely day out on the ocean and all were merrily happy by the time we got back to terra firma. As always, there were still enough snapper and grouper to fill all the freezers for a while.
Onto Sunday, 25th November and although there were only 3 of us made this trip we had a hugely successful day. Because there were only three of us, I chartered a much smaller boat and I was very pleasantly surprised to find an old friend of yesteryear in charge, Captain Ting. Captain Ting was the original PSC fishing captain when Frank was the Fishing Chairman of the PSC.
Captain TING is reputed as the best around and today he proved it. We went to a different hunting ground which I remember from about 7 years ago and we immediately started landing snapper with the occasional barracuda – some caught direct and others grabbing at the smaller fish as we reeled them in.
The KPK voucher was awarded to Francis Youett as shown in the photo, who caught the nicest 3 to 4 kilo snapper you ever did see. Because Francis did not want the biggy, I allowed Rick Drennan to take it to his local restaurant who cooks the fish for him and as long as he buys a few beers they do not charge him for the meal. Great service here in fun city. If I remember rightly I somehow think they used to do that in the U.K. Eh, some chance!
Today’s fishing was a pleasant change from the routine over the last four or five years and I shall be booking him again for the smaller groups in the near future. Five passengers on his boat would be overcrowded!
Our next schedules trips are for Saturday 8th Dec, Sunday 16th Dec and Sat 28th or Sun 29th Dec. If anyone is interested in joining in we set sail about 7.30 am and return about 6.00 pm latest. Contact me on 087 091 7565 for further information.

Phil and Brian claim the medals

IPGC golf from The Haven

Phil Groves.

Monday, Nov. 26, Eastern Star - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phil Groves (7) 32pts
2nd Mike Hill (23) 32pts
3rd Hiroyuki Tatsumi (12) 30pts
4th Sekio Ojima (23) 30pts
5th Paul Hartley (16) 30pts
Just when we had thought that weather had turned for the better we were faced with yet another storm front, bringing with it plenty of rain but very little wind to help reduce the humidity, and so the results were affected by not only very little run, but also near exhaustion for most of the competitors who did not hail from Northern Queensland.
The short week, due to the Loy Kratong festival holiday on Wednesday, started out at Eastern Star where the Robert Trent Jones design has never been one of the easier ones, with a length of almost 6,600 yards, many chances to go out of bounds and quite a few water hazards added in for good measure. With golf carts banned from the fairways due to the heavy overnight rain the course was completely sodden, allowing zero run for anywhere other than the cart paths and there are few of those to be found around the course.
Phil Groves continued with his good streak of form with the best card of the day, which on any other occasion he might have been slightly embarrassed to return. Having started very slowly a good level handicap round was sufficient to see him home in first place following a count back over Mike Hill, which he won with a better 18 to 17 to leave Mike in second spot.
Hiroyuki Tatsumi took third place after also being involved in a count back, this one with Sekio Ojima and Paul Hartley which he won with 18 over the last nine as Sekio slipped into fourth after he had tied Paul at 13 each for the nine but had a better 9 to 8 on the last six.
Shuichi Kodak had the sole 2 in the first division to sweep the pot while Mike Hill did the same in the second division with the only one.
Before the presentations there were welcome backs for Vance Millar, Brian Randall and Sekio Ojima and farewells for Peter Skinner and John Wood.
As mentioned earlier in the report Wednesday’s competition was cancelled due to Loy Kratong, which for the first time in living memory featured almost a complete day of rain in the Pattaya area, dampening many of the revelers spirits and washing out many other golf venue games that were organised.

Friday, Nov. 30, Phoenix Mountain & Lakes
- Monthly Medals

Div. 1 (Blue Tees)
CSS 77 NC
1st Phil Groves (7) 77
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (15) 90
3rd Jukka Sariola (15) 97
Div. 2 (White Tees)
CSS 75 NC
1st Brian Randall (36) 79
2nd Alwyne Burley (17) 79
3rd Seppo Sadeharju (23) 80
The wet weather continued to the end of the week when the day’s competition for the monthly medals was set for Phoenix as usual with the first division playing from the blue tee and the second division from the whites and both being played as stroke competitions.
As with the earlier outing the course was extremely wet with, unusually for Phoenix, no carts allowed off the cart paths adding to the days exertions for the hopefuls who became ever less so as the round progressed.
As with the week’s earlier competition these two were also non-counting for upward review, with the CSS moving up three strokes from both tees as the scores spiraled beyond any previously known boundaries.
Phil Groves took the first division with a solid two nines but found the length, even with his prodigious driving, a little difficult, having to hit woods into almost all of the par fours and a couple of the par fives with even the short Mountain 5th demanding a five iron following a very good drive. It all added up to more than he would have liked, but it was still good enough to ensure that he will be teeing it up in December in the Gold and Silver playoffs as the twelfth qualifier in the first division group.
Shuichi Kodaka has won many podium places, but his second place was surely a record, with a card that showed an eighteen over result, it was still seven better than the next nearest player.
This was Jukka Sariola, who must have wondered why he had travelled so far from Finland to play in conditions that he could have found around the corner at home. He was happy to make it back to the clubhouse before total exhaustion overtook him but he was easily the best in his four-ball.
Brian Randall won his very first competition, and a medal stroke play to boot, to also qualify for the finals but sadly will not be in Pattaya when it all tees off in December. But the win was very welcome following a late count back over Alwyne Burly which saw him run out the winner with a better 37 to 39.5 over the Lakes course having reduced his outward nine by five shots coming home as Alwyne returned a level front and back nine.
Seppo Sadeharju also won a count back to take third place ahead of Sekio Ojima with a better 41 to 44.5 as Sekio slipped badly playing through the closing holes.
There were no 2’s in the first division from the blue tees but from the slightly easier white tees Sekio Ojima and Alwyne Burley shared the second division pool.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome for Martti Karkkainen and welcome backs for Sakari Finne, Jukka Sariola, Dave Howden, Harold Hart and Mike Korney.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Plummer continues winning streak

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Ian Plummer and Pete Sumner - winners at Eastern star on Friday.

Monday, Nov. 26, Pattana – Stableford
Still torrential rain here in Jomtien on the Sunday, this is unbelievable for this time of the year and there were still a few cancellations in the afternoon not chancing the game next day.
We drove up the 331and the weather conditions looked OK and we arrived to a very busy course with over 250 green fees booked for the day. We were allocated the A and B nines today and we teed off bang on time. Jirapol, the ex-Eastern Star and Black Mountain manager who we have known for years, is the boss here now and he and his staff kept everyone moving bang on time.
Playing some brilliant golf lately Kari Aarnio, playing off 17, won division 2 with 34 points. Jim Connelly was second after beating the Welsh lad Mike Lewis on a back nine count back of 18/14 after they both returned scores of 32.
On the first tee today there were a few discussions regarding the white and yellow tees; normally we play off yellow but the consensus today was to try the whites. A cut of 6-16 in division 1 and Mike Combs, with 30 playing off 13, topped the flight ahead of Tony Kay in second, who beat Dennis Scougall on a 18/13 back nine count back after they both scored 29 points.
Near pins were claimed by Juha Hanlo, Peter Pedder, Jerry Sweetnam, Raivo Velsberg, Kari Aarnio, Mike Lewis and Burnie Sinclair.
Raivo Velsberg got the only ‘2’ in division 1 and with his last game with us before his return to Finland for more treatment, Kari Aarnio birdied A8, the 170 yard par three over the water, for the only two in division 2. Our thoughts are with Kari for a speedy return.
Wednesday, Nov. 28, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Our first visit here for around two months and the course was in reasonable condition so we have booked to return here in five weeks. We were allocated the B and C nines today with the cut in the two divisions at 6-16 and 17 plus.

As always as you drop down the hill on the 7 before turning right towards the course and the hills in the background were covered with dense clouds and it didn’t look too good. We teed off half an hour before our scheduled time as there were 3 cancelations in front of us and there was only a short 20 minute wait during the round for the rain to clear but this was not a problem.
Wichai won division 1 with 39 points, Jan Sordal alias Sassa was second two points behind and with 34 points the telephone box boy Dennis Scougal took third.
Mike Lewis topped division 2 with 33 points and Peter Hokke was second on 29 after beating Chris Slota 15/13 on a back nine count back.

Valentina Hiller won the ladies division today.
Near pins went to Juha Harilo, Dennis Scougal, Jan Sordal, Chris Voller and Luchet (2).
In the ‘2’s, Sassa and Dennis Scougal shared the pot in division 1 and Mauri Friman birdied B8 for the only one in division 2.
It was Bon Voyage to Chuck Anderson today - see you in the new year Chuck!
Friday, Nov. 30, Eastern Star - Stableford
There were gloomy clouds over the coast line as we approached the course and the forecast here was still more rain for the day and it became very dark over the first five holes, but suddenly the clouds dispersed and all nine groups had a rain free day.
Three divisions out today with the cut at 6-14, 15-19 and 20 plus and the Aussie boy Ian Plummer continued his winning streak with 38 points in division 2 for the win. Mike Lewis took second spot with 33 and Jerry Sweetnam was third on 32.
Iain Walsh won division 3 with 36 points, Willy Van Heetvelde was second on 33 and Walter Weber came in third with 31.
Some lower scores in division 1 with 33 winning it for Pete Sumner, Ted Gardner was second two points behind and Mikael Anderson beat Billy Fitzgerald and Wichai on a 15/13/12 back nine count back after they all returned scores of 30 points.
Near pins were won by Mikael Anderson, Ted Gardner (2), Pete Sumner, Andy Baber, Joe Kubon and Iain Walsh.
There were no ‘2’s in division 1 and Andy Baber, with Miss Chevrolet’s car, sunk a four-foot putt on the third for the only one in division 2.

Milne on the mark at November Medal

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Steve Milne (right) receives his “Take it Easy” sponsored trophy from Capt’ Steve.

Monday, Nov. 26, Burapha – Stableford
Eighteen players at Burapha today to play the A and B courses from the blue markers - a great test of golf for players of all handicaps. The course was well attended by a number of tour groups but most started well before us or on the other course. We actually teed off 20 minutes earlier than our 10am tee-off time and all five groups were finished, showered and on the way back to Pattaya by 2pm, great pace of play and no hold-ups.
The course was in great condition even though they have had plenty of rain; most fairways and most of the rough had been cut and were reasonably dry - the greens had been lightly sanded but were great to putt on and still fast. Overall A and B are in a lot better condition than C and D so if will be interesting to see how the other course comes up when the rain disappears.
One division plus the ‘2’s and the overall winner for the day was Paul Bourke with a great score of 38 points off his 9 handicap and Bourkie also had the only ‘2’ for the day. Running second was Peter Stonebridge with 34 points, who beat Steve Milne on a count back.
1st Paul Bourke (9) 38pts
2nd Pete Stonebridge (16) 34pts
3rd Steve Milne (15) 34pts

Mark McDonald (right) collects his third low gross medal (Aug, Sept & Nov) from Capt’ Steve.

Tuesday, Nov. 27, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Just six players turned out at an improving Khao Kheow on the A & C nines. The golf wasn’t that spectacular and the course played long from the yellow tees because of all the rain, which gave Suzi, the day’s organiser, a distinct advantage. Nevertheless they enjoyed themselves but there were no ‘2’s.
1st Suzi Lawton (19) 30pts
2nd Angus Neilson (7) 29pts
3rd John Locke (16) 26pts
Wednesday, Nov. 28, Siam Plantation – Stableford
An early start for Siam Plantation on an overcast day with the threat of rain, again! 15 players and the starter split the groups and sent some off Pineapple and some off Sugar Cane which turned out to be great as all our players were finished before the heavens opened and the course was closed because of the downpour.
The course was in great condition considering the weather over the last week but we had to play ‘lift, clean and place’ on the fairways as they have been verticut and sometimes the ball would lodge in the cuts. The pace of play was good, as were the scores considering the weather as we had a little rain on two holes but the course held up well.
Welcome to Sekio Ojima, Dominic Moss, Sam Foster and Alex Hall, all having their first game with the Outback; and welcome back to Jon Goddard who was playing his annual match against Angus, which would continue for the next few days.
One Division plus the ‘2’s and the overall winner was Alex Hall with 38 points off his 22 handicap, from Stephen Mann with 37 points, with Steve Poznanski taking third place with 36 points. In fourth was Tom Fitzpatrick with 35 points who beat Rosco on a count back.
Two ‘2’s today, one by Jon Goddard on Sugar Cane 3 and the other by Seiko Ojima on Sugar Cane 6.
1st Alex Hall (22) 38pts
2nd Stephen Mann (9) 37pts
3rd Steve Poznanski (14) 36pts
4th Tom Fitzpatrick (13) 35pts
5th Rosco Langoulant (14) 35pts
Wednesday, Nov. 28, Eastern Star – Stableford
The eight players here today, which included the PSC President and Golf Chairman, were not as lucky as the guys at Siam Plantation as the heavens opened with thunder and lightning after 14 holes. We tried to wait it out but the rain persevered with the course rapidly becoming unplayable, so we all decided to end the game.
The course had certainly improved in condition since we last played here on the 3rd October and the greens read true although a couple of the greens were a bit patchy in places and we opted for the yellow tees today as the night before they had heavy rain.
So our 14-hole competition was won by Sugar Ray on count back with 26 points, beating Eddy Beilby and there were two ‘2’s today from Tony Oakes and Joe Mooneyham, both on hole 6.
We will certainly see Eastern Star again in the very near future as it was good value for the money and is certainly worth another chance.
Friday, Nov. 30, Green Valley – Stableford
Thirty-eight players were at Green Valley for the monthly medal sponsored by Paul Greenaway of Take It Easy Car and Bike Hire; and thank you Paul for your continued sponsorship. A great day for golf as the forecasters got it wrong again and the day actually turned out to be nearly perfect weather.
Green Valley has held up well over the last couple of months even with the amount of rain that we have had but it seriously needs a few dry days as the course is now starting to show signs of the wear and tear that the wet conditions cause, but full marks to the greens staff for trying to keep the course in good condition.
The course was very playable but we still played ‘lift clean and place’ on the fairways and apart from two greens the course was fine, however, it was slow pace of play but that just goes to show how popular the course is at the moment.
We had three divisions plus the winner and the ‘2’s and it was great to see a return to form by Steve Milne, who shot gross 84 for a net 69 and the winner of this month’s Medal round. Other good scores were recorded by Mark McDonald, winner of Div A with a gross 76 and net 74 and winner of the low gross for the third time; Pete Stonebridge, winner of Div B with an 87 gross (net 71) and Joachim Oestreicher, winner of Div C with a gross 93 (also net 71).
There were seven ‘2’s for the day from; Jim Black, who was having his last game with us for a while, Martin Crichton and Alan Campbell all on hole 9; Peter LeNoury, Mark McDonald and Eddy Beilby all on hole 12 and Joachim Oestreicher on hole 16.
Overall
1st Steve Milne (15) net 69
Div A (0-13)
1st Mark McDonald (2) net 74
2nd Ron Dickie (8) net 76
3rd Geoff Stimpson (6) net 76

Keith cans a ‘dodo’ - James cards 48

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday winners - Thierry Petrement and Barry Copestake.

Sunday, Nov. 25, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Thierry Petrement (12) 41pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (8) 37pts
3rd J-P Gasser (11) 37pts
B Flight
1st Barry Copestake (16) 37pts
2nd Pierre Bietry (13) 35pts
3rd Paddy Jordan (18) 35pts
C Flight
1st Laurent Triboullier (29) 37pts
2nd Maurice Triboullier (29) 36pts
3rd Sean Murphy (28) 36pts
Near Pins: No 4 Paul Hack; No 9 Tony Huxtable; No 9 Tom Feeney; No 16 Yui Bietry.
The man of the match was none other than every bodies nice guy Monsieur Thierry ‘viva la Francia’ Petrement who outraced a bunch of 37’s with his award winning, and first place in the premier flight 41 points. It should be noted that such a point total by Thierry belies a gross 79! As suggested, right on Thievery’s well rounded heals were Kevin say ‘no more’ McEntee and Thierry’s fellow countryman Monsieur J-P Gasser with their twin 37’s. The esteemed gentleman from the picturesque Co. Offaly (got to be nice to Kevin as he leaves soon – Hooray!) edged J-P on the resulting count back.
Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake must have been wearing his dancing shoes as he waltzed round the course with his 37 points to take the laurels in B Flight. Pierre ‘the magician’ and Paddy Jordan followed Barry up the steps with 35 points apiece. A count back sorted out their order of ascent.
In the junior flight the Triboullier twins ganged up on Sean Murphy; Laurent took the top step with his personalized 37 points as Maurice gained the Silver as his back-nine maths added up better than Sean’s.
Peter Lenoury, Patrick Kelly, Yui Bietry, Tony Huxtable, Nigel Bennett and Tom Byrne divvied up the 2’s pot.
Monday, Nov. 26, Pattana C&A - Stableford
A Flight
1st James O’Mahoney (7) 48pts
2nd Mike Nagle (11) 41pts
3rd J-P Maffray (12) 37pts
B Flight
1st Paddy Jordan (18) 37pts
2nd Reg McKay (16) 37pts
3rd Colin Davis (17) 36pts
C Flight
1st Brian Cooper (25) 38pts
2nd Brien Cooper Kent (28) 35pts
3rd Keith McLachlan (24) 35pts
Nothing subtle about this claim for the title slot - James O’Mahoney, who to date had never quite found his form in numerous games with the society, wanted to alleviate any doubt in the society’s mind when he did find it. Does a gross 68 (48-point) effort grab your attention? Well it did everyone in the field as it was the best on the day in a fair sized field. His seven stroke margin left A Flight’s second placed holder, Mike Nagle, dumbstruck. tidying up A Flight’s bronze was J-P ‘you’ll never walk alone’ Maffray.
A skip down to C Flight provided the third best score of the day and the name atop the card was Brian ‘mini’ Cooper. Brian has a well seasoned handicap but he does ‘pop up’ now and again. This day was more of a ‘shoot up’ as he netted out at 38 points. Brian’s twin Brian ‘cooper’ Kent slipped through a small opening, relatively speaking that is, to make his 35 points better than Keith McLachlan’s.
Since there is little rhythm to this article as of yet, we jump up to B Flight and find Irishman Paddy Jordan and Scotland’s Buckie boy himself Reg McKay knotted on 37 points apiece. Paddy won the count back for top spot leaving Reg the silver. The Donkey gave every man hope as he strode off to the podium to take up a stance on the third step.
Mike Nagle, Andy Byrne, Dave Chalmers and Bill Peach shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Nov. 28, St. Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st J-P Gasser (11) 39pts
2nd Justin Fowlis (12) 38pts
3rd Mike Nagle (11) 38pts
B Flight
1st John Bresnihan (18) 41pts
2nd Reg McKay (15) 40pts
3rd Jim Bell (16) 37pts
C Flight
1st Bob Monk (21) 38pts
2nd Brian Cooper (25) 38pts
3rd Keith McLachlan (24) 33pts
Despite some fine scores the shot of the day was Kiwi Keith McLachlan’s first ever hole-in-one which was achieved on the long 17th. Keith, who resides in Australia and is a member of the Royal Queens Golf Club, was a gracious host as he used his 2’s winning ace to buy all the lads and lasses a drink.
In the daily competition, John Bresnihan spaced his beers out just right to bring home a gaggle of points, 41 in all, to take the day and B Flight gold whilst bringing his handicap down on the way. The gang on and off the podium would all have won any other day as Scotland’s Reg MacKay 40 points took the silver and Jimmy ‘A-K-47’ Bell filled the flight with 37 points.
J-P Gasser was the top shot in the flagship flight with a steady 37 points. Justin Fowlis and Mike Nagle both scored 38 points - Justin’s effort relegated Mike to the flight bronze. Kevin ‘you know who’ on 37 points didn’t even make the podium.
C Flight was headed by Bob Monk and the steady and omnipresent Brian ‘mini’ Cooper. Count back dictated that they climbed the podium in that order. The hole in one boy Keith rounded out the flight.
Patrick Kelly, Pierre Bietry, and Bert Griffiths rolled in 2’s that was good only for a mention.
Friday, Nov. 30, Green Valley & Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight Silky Oak
1st Ed Wyckoff (10) 39pts
2nd Torre Eliassen (14) 36pts
3rd Dave Shelton (8) 35pts
B Flight Silky Oak
1st Maurice Thurnherr (29) 31pts
2nd Adam Oyston (16) 30pts
3rd Richard Mitchell (16) 29pts
A flight Green Valley
1st Bob Watson (6) 37pts
2nd Reg McKay (15) 36pts
B Flight Green Valley
1st Dave Norman (17) 36pts
2nd Barry Oats (25) 31pts
In the most radical of outings the society undertakes, the society entered the same clubhouse but left by different courses. There is both great affection for the unique challenges of Silky Oak and disdain by those that simply do not enjoy the schooling it can administrate. While you can’t please all people all the time, efforts are continually made to do so. The popularity of this decision was supported by the excellent turnout.
Approximately half the gang took on the challenging Silky Oak layout and the set up showed its teeth. Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff was the only player to better his handicap, carding a splendid 39 points. Ed’s fine effort was three clear of Tore Eliassen and a further stoke clear of Dave Shelton.
B Flight found the going tough as Maurice Thurnherr needed just 31 points to pick up the flight gold. Adam Oyston was one shot in arrears for the silver. Richard Mitchell, the Donkey and Sean Murphy all posted 29-point returns - when the counting was done Sean and the Donkey trotted off fed up and satang less.
Ireland’s Christy Knight was the sole heir to the 2’s pot.
The more conservative lot left over at Green Valley were led by Bob Watson as he was the only player to better par on the day and take the A Flight and man of the match honours. Scotland’s Buckie boy Reg McKay took the silver with a very impressive even par round.
Dave Norman’s even par round in B Flight was good for the gold. Barry was five clear of Barry Oats and hole in one man Keith McLachlan. Keith’s luck ran out in the following count back.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.
Starting on the 6th Dec. will be the PGA Thailand Championship at Amata Springs this finishes on Sunday the 9th Dec. For those interested we will be offering a bus service to the course on Sunday, we also have free 4 day passes for the event available to PSC members.

Players sail home in roaring forties

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Ed Brubaker - winner at Wangjuntr.

Andy Rich
This past week the Thais celebrated Loy Krathong, one of the most colourful Thai festivals, with the ladies (and ladyboys) sporting traditional Thai costumes, floating decorations in sea and river, burning lanterns heading into the sky and millions of fireworks. There were plenty of fireworks on the golf courses TRGG played this week as well which seemed in keeping with the evening entertainment.
Unbelievable scores were posted in most of the competitions this week and it all started on Monday 26th November at Green Valley. Dorsey Richardson (19), still counting his winnings from the previous week, rocketed to the top of the leader board once again with 42pts. Jim Cleaver (12) also had a magnificent round finishing second with 41pts and in-form Mike Rushant catherine-wheeled into third place with 38pts.
On Tuesday 27th November we made a very rare visit to play Wangjuntr (Highland course) one of the most beautiful courses in Thailand, which was a first for many of our group including myself. It all started with a bang when our Captain Fergus Brennan and his rocket propelled pick-up broke the sound barrier in driving to the course. In fact I do believe we arrived before we left, leaving us time travellers a little shaky on our pins. Needless to say all the winners on the day had taken a more sedate mode of transport to the course.
Ed Brubaker (12) blasted into first place shooting to the stars with 42pts. Joseph Schuler (8), a playing partner of mine and a man who only uses driving irons off the tee, played beautifully to take second place with 39pts. Another good golfer Noel Pittard (7) finished third on 38pts.
Thursday 29th November saw the TRGG faithful head off on their weekly pilgrimage to play Phoenix (Lakes and Ocean). Again there was an incredibly high winning score posted. This time it was Paul Stanton (14) who lit up the course shooting 41pts to take top spot. Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11), who always plays well at Phoenix, took second place with 37pts and Robbie James (10) took third with 36pts.
There is no Saturday golf at the TRGG for the foreseeable future and for the next few weeks at least we shall be playing on Fridays. So starting this week on Friday 30th November the group headed off to play Plutaluang (North and West courses). I like the Navy course and was sad it did not fit in with my agenda.
Robert Bjorkqvist (12), who could only finish in second and third places last week, finally finished on the top of the podium this time shooting 38pts. Paul Stanton (12), having been docked two shots off his handicap after his exploits at Phoenix, slipped into second on 37pts and Damon Woo (11) took third with 34pts.

Jim Bell wins his first Growling Swan Monthly Mug

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Monday, Nov. 26, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Pleasant Valley was the venue for the day’s competition and a smaller than normal contingent of twenty were ready to tackle this scenic and sometimes challenging layout, this time off the blue tees. After welcoming newcomer Ken Hole, who was playing with us for the first time, we departed the GS at 8.30 am and 45 minutes later arrived at the course where there seemed to be a fair amount of activity.
As mentioned earlier, the weather was super although with no carts allowed on the fairways it was apparent there had been a fair amount of rain on the course in the last 24 hours so winter rules through the greens were the order of the day.
Although the course was busy we managed to get our first four-ball away 15 minutes earlier than booked at 9.45 am with the group in front of us about a hole and a half away. Unfortunately they weren’t the quickest golfers in the world and we soon caught them up and slowed down considerably, causing our front nine to take about two hours and 15 minutes.
The course was looking great although obviously wet underfoot in places and the greens although fairly good were naturally suffering from all the heavy rain over the past few months. This certainly did not deter us from appreciating this golf course with its magnificent scenery and we had plenty of time to look around with the slow play in front of us. The pace did not improve for the remainder of the round which caused the full journey to stretch out to four hours & thirty five minutes, a lot slower than normal but I guess we need to get used to it as the high season kicks in.
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 18 & B Grade was for 19 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th and 18th which were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Takeshi Hakozaki, Walter Baechli, Tom Cotton, Ken Bernek & Max Bracegirdle. Many thanks to these golfers for their generosity.
Several weeks away from competition golf which were spent on the driving range certainly paid off for Neil Skilton who had a 76 gross, which gave him 39 points and secured him first place in the A Grade with your writer second on 37 points. In third place came Takeshi Hakozaki one point further back and Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei finished fourth with 35 points.
Once again it was Kae who “got the chocolates” in B Grade by winning with a fine 41 points and with two golfers on 37 points a count back was necessary resulting in Bjarne Kjaer (20 point back nine) finishing second ahead of Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle (19 point back nine) in third place. Another count back was needed to determine fourth place with two players tied on 36 points and it was Rita Zoebelli (19 point back nine) just edging out Tom (TC) Cotton (14 point back nine).
A Flight (0-18)
1st Neil Skilton (7) 39pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (11) 37pts
3rd Takeshi Hakozaki (10) 36pts
4th Alain Taddei (18) 35pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Duangjai Tusagad (30) 41pts
2nd Bjarne Kjaer (19) 37pts
3rd Max Bracegirdle (26) 37pts
4th Rita Zoebelli (24) 36pts
Near Pins: 5th – Peter Blackburn; 8th – Tom Cotton; 13th – Ken Hole; 17th – Tom Cotton
Long Putts: 9th – Max Bracegirdle; 18th – Alain Taddei
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Roy “Plums” Dayton & he sheepishly wore the cap for a while but took it in good spirit. Deefa the Dog was once again present and whilst being paraded by big Ken he collected many donations to charity for the needy in Pattaya. Then it was back to The Growling Swan for several “tankards of mead” and with the usual fun & merriment it rounded off another very enjoyable day.

Neil Skilton, Kae & Roy Dayton.

Nov. 29, Century Chonburi – Stroke/Monthly Mug
It was that time of the month again when we get to compete for the coveted Growling Swan Monthly Mug and on this day there were 26 golfers signed up to play a stroke round at Century Chonburi. We assembled at The Growling Swan ready for our 8.30 am departure and were happy to welcome newcomers Ken Blinco from Australia & now residing in Pattaya, James “Bear” Wilks from Melbourne, Australia and Ian Masterson from Belfast, Nothern Ireland.
Departing the GS right on time we headed off in 3 mini vans and arrived at the golf course after the 60 minute journey, this time accessing the course via the “good” road off Highway 331. There were a couple of groups wishing to tee off ahead of us and of course this was allowed as there was an important announcement to be made to our group.
We all assembled on the putting/chipping green and I announced that two days prior, on Tuesday a very good friend of ours Kevin Grose from Melbourne, Victoria had tragically passed away in his hotel room. Kevin was here on holiday to see if he would be able to live here for six months a year but of course it was not to be. Kevin was a lifelong mate of Growling Swan Mine Host Peter Grey and in the space of a few weeks had made many new friends here with his friendly & loveable attitude – He will be sorely missed! We all observed a minute’s silence for him and Peter Grey provided us all with black arm bands which we wore for the day.
We managed to send our first four-ball away right on time at 10.00 am in fine but overcast conditions and proceeded at a leisurely pace whilst enjoying this challenging layout, which was in very good condition with the greens holding up well and at times being very quick, particularly the 18th. The weather was perfect with dry but slightly humid conditions and of course the “Weather Gods” once more smiled on us as not a drop of rain was sighted all day.
Being a stroke round it was necessary at times to search for lost balls, mine a couple of times, but we didn’t really hold the others up behind and finished our 18 holes in four hours & twenty minutes. This would have to be the best value course in the region with a green fee of 100 baht and although the amenities are sub standard compared to most venues it is well worth playing and now has a regular place on our monthly schedule.
In addition to the Monthly Mug winner we were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 21 and B Grade for 22 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the A9 & B9 greens which were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Sportscene, J C Lhoste, Alain Taddei, Max Bracegirdle & Kevin Waycott. Many thanks to these guys for their generosity.
The 6th Growling Swan Monthly Mug was well won on the day by Jim “AK47” Bell with a net 71 and as Jim has been playing with us fairly regularly over the past month or so it was terrific to see him receive this much sought after award.
In the A Grade it was a very tight finish with 3 golfers on net 76 so a count back was required to sort them out. Yours truly (net 37 back nine) managed to finish first from my old mate Mike “Hunter” Gosden (net 38 back nine) in second spot and Bjarne “Mr Colors No.2” Kjaer (net 41 back nine) finished in third place. Newcomer Ken Blinco was fourth with a net 77.
In the B Grade it was last month’s Mug winner Roy “Plums” Dayton finishing on top with a net 75 and in a 2-way count back for second & third on net 77 it was Allan “Parrot” Tranekaer (net 39 back nine) edging out Ian Masterson (net 40 back nine). Another count back was needed to determine fourth spot with 2 players on net 80 and it was Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper (net 32 back nine) who triumphed over J C Lhoste (net 40 back nine).

Back at The Growling Swan for presentations we thanked Peter Grey for sponsoring this very popular monthly event and also for providing the delicious chicken supper which was devoured at a rapid rate as usual. Mine Host Peter was this time not the favourite to win the N.A.G.A. (awarded to the golfer with the worst score on the day) as he has had several golf lessons recently and it paid off as the award was well won on this occasion by Gary Monley, who accepted the cap in very good spirit and wore it for an hour or so in the bar.
Many of us stayed for quite a while enjoying another great night of fun after a very enjoyable day of golf, although Jim Bell was somewhat concerned when his newly presented GS Monthly Mug went missing. The finger is pointed squarely at Paul Hack who we feel may know of its whereabouts – something to do with a putter!
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to [email protected].

Nyborg shoots the lights out at Pattana

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Paul Smith (center) celebrates as captain of the winning team in the John Preddy tournament and Golfer of the Month for November.

Monday, Nov. 26, Greenwood A & B – Medal
Six groups set out today for our second medal competition of the month, once again sponsored by KPK Foods. The day started brightly and although the course was not in its best condition following recent heavy rain, there were no holdups and play progressed smoothly for the outward nine holes.
Once again on the inward nine a particularly violent storm moved in and although the first four groups were able to complete their round, the last two groups were stranded on the course, and eventually had to abandon the game. Fortunately Greenwood is one of the few local courses that still maintains a policy of providing rain-checks, so at least the eight unlucky golfers who missed out on the competition were able to obtain a voucher for nine holes on their next visit.
Gordon Melia finally got his putter working and produced the best round of the day to comfortably win the B flight, whilst Geoff Parker re-discovered some form to take the honours in the A flight.
A Flight
1st Geoff Parker (13) net 71
2nd Neil Hurst (13) net 74
3rd Paul Smith (5) net 75
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (16) net 68
2nd Thomas Nyborg (26) net 72
3rd Tim Winder (13) net 77
Near Pins: Neil Hurst, Mike Lloyd, Tony Scambler and Keith Smithson.
Wednesday, Nov. 28, Treasure Hill – Stableford
A bright sunny morning as we set off to Treasure Hill, and when we arrived at the course it was surprisingly quiet. We were able to tee off without delay, but as the first group reached the first green, a large dark cloud appeared and the rain rumbled in. The downpour continued for about twenty minutes before we were able to continue and then the monsoon returned again as we started on the inward nine. This second storm was torrential, but once again only lasted thirty minutes and we were able to continue again and complete the round, albeit in very wet and soggy conditions.
Despite the dreadful conditions, Thomas Nyborg was able to produce the best score of the day to win the B flight ahead of Reg Smart, and Dave Ashman made a welcome return to the podium, winning the A flight on a count back ahead of Keith Smithson.
Although the course was under water it was obvious that the recent maintenance works around the greens are settling in rapidly and the course will be in excellent condition in a few weeks – if it ever stops raining!
A Flight
1st Dave Ashman (14) 34pts
2nd Keith Smithson (2) 34pts
3rd Neil Hurst (13) 32pts
B Flight
1st Thomas Nyborg (26) 38pts
2nd Reg Smart (32) 36pts
3rd Jack Robertson (31) 30pts
Near Pins: Mike Lloyd, Neil Hurst and Gordon Melia(2).
Friday, Nov. 30, Pattana B & C – Stableford
The final game of the month saw Neil Hurst and Paul Smith as the only two players still in contention for the Golfer of the Month title, so they were paired together for the final shoot out. There was a disappointing turnout for one of our rare visits to Pattana, and one can only assume it was down to the recent wet weather, and the fact that the course has a reputation for playing long and not surviving wet weather too well.
Those that did turn out were richly rewarded because the course was in great condition and the greens were without doubt some of the best we’ve played on in recent weeks. The weather gods also smiled on us at last, and with no rain and near perfect conditions a great day was had by all the players.
The reduced field meant that we were down to a single flight and Thomas Nyborg eclipsed both championship contenders, to romp home with 46 points. Although Neil Hurst managed to beat Paul Smith on the day by a single point, it wasn’t enough to overtake him in the contest for the Golfer of the Month title – so congratulations to Paul for a successful month.
Near pins went to Geoff Parker, Tony Robbins and Thomas Nyborg (2).
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our website at www.bunkersociety.com

Double Scotch - with water

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar, Soi Buakhao

The Pattaya Golf Society returned to Green Valley for the first time in a while to play their monthly medal competition on the course which was in good but soft condition. A later than normal start saw the group, divided into two flights at sixteen and under, nervously eyeing the skies as they became darker and by the tenth hole the heavy showers began. Greens became flooded and fairways sodden but the PGS manfully played on.
In the second flight Leigh Abbey and Jørn Eriksen shared third place with net 77 each whilst Larry Ang signed out this trip with a fine net 74. The flight winner was Ken Grimes with an impressive net 73. In the top flight Pete Sumner scored net 74 with the best gross figures of the day whilst Scot Ken Page opened his account this trip with an excellent net 71. The winner was compatriot Neil McIntosh, suitably named given the nature of the day, and his net 69 gave him his best return since joining IPGC.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Wichai Tananusorn, Peter Ditz and Pete Sumner, all on hole twelve, whilst the ball had been set rolling by Mr Len on the ninth. The Booby Bevy went to Peter Ditz for the longest drive of the day - Green Valley via Greenwood - and by the end of his round his shoes had disintegrated as well! There were different memories of the day for Neil McIntosh however as his golf came good on a stormy day at Green Valley.
Jones signs out in style
The Pattaya Golf Society ended a very wet November with a trip to Eastern Star on Friday, 30th, to play a stableford competition. The course was reasonably well presented but some fairways were still soft and damp and the greens remained slow but at least consistent.
The course has toughened up greatly over the last few years and it has now been nine visits since the group’s winner broke par. This day was no exception as Mr Len and Dave Edwards shared third place with 30 points, a couple behind the player most in form, Neil McIntosh. The winner with 35 points was Steve Jones, playing his final competition this trip and it was an appropriate way to sign off.
Neil McIntosh returned the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on the third hole and the Booby Bevy went to M. Olivier Tahoun for his low score. He later put the record straight by admitting to every golfer’s dream. In April he had scored two holes in one, on the same day, in the same competition, at his home club in northern France. That certainly beats a Heineken!

Covill takes the plaudits at Greenwood

The Billabong Golf Group

Wednesday winner Greig Ritchie (left) with Friday winner Jeff North (center) and runner up Darl White.

Monday, Nov. 26, Greenwood - Stableford
Playing Greenwood for the first time for me in at least 2 to 3 years and nothing has changed - the greens weren’t in that good a condition but they were as fast as any around this area. The course itself was in fine condition, no muddy balls and just a very pleasant walk.
Three group’s played and the scores were some good, some not so good. One person, Ian Covill, had a great day out while another player, Richie Steadman, had to lay up on a par four a distance of 40 yards off the tee, but apparently it did pass the ladies tee.
It did get hot at times but the drink stands were well stocked with all types of drinks - probably one of the best around for choices of beer.
Good to see the shine back on George Barrie’s club’s again. Anyway down to the winners and losers. Coming second was Bob Pearce on a count back over John Locke with 34 points and the winner by a country mile was Ian Covill with a fantastic 40 points. Again there were no ‘2’s, quite amazing as this makes four golf outings on the trot with no ‘2’s.
Wednesday, Nov. 28, Green Valley - Stableford
Green Valley was our scheduled venue today - well that was until the storm struck. 3 groups played until the last of them got stormed off on the 16th green. You would have to feel a little for Darl White as he hit a great shot to the par three 16th about 3 feet for a birdie but alas that was when the rain started to hammer down on us and the water stopped his put 6 inches short. Hard luck mate, next time perhaps?
There were two 2’s today, one from Brian Wilkinson and the other from Greig Ritchie.
We stopped the competition at the 16th and did the results at that point. The winner was Greig Ritchie with 32 points and George Barrie running a close second with 31. Although we played ‘lift clean and place’ it wasn’t really necessary on every lie you had.
Friday, Nov. 30, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Treasure Hill was the venue for today’s round and this course just keeps getting better and better; the work they are doing is paying off big time. Fourteen players competed and it was welcome to John Lee and Mick Bowl’s from the Emerald Isle - good to see you fellas, also JJ Harney and Scott Eaton, sorry you had to take a hiding from Greig and Richard but the beer was cold when they eventually got back to the bar to buy one for you.
The winner today was Jeff North with a fine 36 points. Runner up was Darl White on 35 points and third was Capt Bob with 34. There was only one 2 today and that went to Capt Bob on the sixth with a putt from off the green.
As Darl, Kiwi Bill and the Capt were playing in a 3-ball it was decided to play a skins game and when we finished there was not enough in the kitty to buy a beer, it was that close. A great day out all round!
Note: The Billabong golf bar is situated looking down the Mabprachan Lake just off Siam Country Road. Call in for a cold beer or give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you would like to play with a friendly bunch of guy’s.

Mashi the man of the month

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Winners and runners-up in each flight with one of Bert’s finest.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, Nov. 27, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
At the moment it is like a day in winter in the U.K., you wake up and it is dark all day, then it pours down. On this day the weather was not the greatest either as we went to Bert’s, but we would see what the day would bring. There were a good number in Bert’s when I got there, but it soon filled up even more, and with many going direct to the course we looked at six groups.
This is a course that can be difficult for the players, and with so much water about we decided to play off the white tees, maybe a bit short but with the ball gathering mud and no run, prudence won.
The trip there is simple these days, and quick. So a later start from Bert’s is good, and despite that we arrived in plenty of time. A smooth book-in saw us soon outside where we were informed we would start on the 10th Tee, and that is not too bad either, and off we went only a few minutes late.
The course was much as expected, with little run and the ball picked up a little mud, but ‘lift, clean and place’ on the short mown areas fixed that. However, the rough was penal and on this course hit a tree and suffer. Getting back on the fairway is at a premium.
The course despite much rain of late and being wet, was still firm enough for carts, and for a while I wondered if we had not made a mistake playing off the white tees as our group was scoring so well. Mashi in particular was in fine form; he never gives in and if he makes a mistake he does not compound it by making another, and on this day his approach play and putting were in the top class. But surely some of the other players had played better than those in our group on this shorter course?
Of course, this being the last Tuesday of the month it was also the ‘MBMG Group, Golfer of the Month’ award and it has been proved time and again that who wins on the last Tuesday often wins all.
We were soon round and the biggest revelation awaited us. Despite a larger number starting off the first nine, we had hot water and lo and behold nice thick white towels. No ‘old friends’ seen. We then went into the restaurant where most had food, to find the food good, hot and reasonably priced. All in all a fine day.
Back at Bert’s it was interesting to see all had had a good day, and the scores were not as high as I had feared. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner with a rather superb 43 points was the one and only Mashi Kaneta, followed by a count back on 39 points that saw Ted Morris in second and Derek Brook in third. In the B Flight the winner was Brian Gabe with 37 points on a count back over Jack Robertson in second. In third we had Joel Flor with 36 points.
Then onto the MBMG Golfer of the Month, and with his superb round on the last day, the winner was, as expected, Mashi Kaneta. Well done Mashi and it was a pleasure to play with him on this day. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Joel Flor (2), Bob Watson, Kevin Dunne
Long Putts: Graham Buckingham, Kevin Dunne

Brilliant Baldwin

Phoenix Members Golf Society

Richard Baldwin and Mike Gerrard pose with the staff members at The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard
With carts being allowed on fairways we decided not to implement the winter rule of ‘lift clean and place’ for our outing on Tuesday, Nov. 27. Although the course is still a little wet in places, this turned out to be justified. There were a few places where the ball picked up a bit of mud, but generally the course is in great shape considering the amount of rainfall we are experiencing at present.
Luckily the rain kept away again, albeit sometimes threatening. Considering the conditions the scoring today was very good with all first four places breaking handicap. We were playing stroke play for the Trattoria Italiana Restaurant voucher today on the Ocean and Mountain course.
Richard Baldwin has been playing some steady golf of late, always being around his handicap of 12. However today he blitzed the course with a superb net 66 (gross 78). Some way back with net 69 were Paul Taylor and Frank Hughes, with the scribe claiming fourth spot with a net 71 (other days this would be good enough to win).
Near pin prizes were awarded to Richard Baldwin, Joris Goetschalkx & Mike Gerrard. The rest of the field’s names, who did not win anything, were put into the hat for a lucky draw chance. The lucky draw prizes are donated by our hosts, The Relax Bar at Ban Amphur, and the recipients were John Bartley, Bill Hewitt, Sergo Volpi & Adriano Reale.
Anyone interested in joining in the golf or (sea fishing at weekends), please contact me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for further information.

Martin makes it 2 out of 2

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Owen & Willem, near pin winners on Thursday.

Tuesday, Nov. 27, The Emerald – Stableford
Tuesday we had 15 players make our first visit to Emerald for several months. The course has been under the gun recently, but has now been restored to good condition, with the greens being very good currently.
With the course & weather conditions in our favour, there were plenty of good scores, something of a rarity (in our group) of late. Frans Olgers (20) showed some good form to lead the way after posting 39 points, closely followed by Paul Hack (12) with 38, having edged Jeff Wylie (6) on count back 19/17. Mam (30), who has been in playing poorly of late, finally hit some good form to finish 4th with 37 points, having edged Dave Edwards (14) on count back 19/17.
Near pins were shared around between K, Dave, Paul & Brian.
Thursday, Nov. 29, Century Chonburi - Stableford
As per the headline, it was the trim, taut & terrific Martin Hayes (13) who led the way home at Century Chonburi with 37 points, ahead of Jeff Wylie (6) who managed to card 35 points, despite a couple of critical errors. The course was in good nick & our thanks go to Peter Blackburne from the Growling Swan, graciously allowing our much smaller group to tee-off first after both bookings had been set for 10:00am.

Brimble takes monthly medal

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Ian Brimble - November Monthly Medal winner.

Steve Ellison
First of all, don’t forget this weekend to see the pros at Amata Spring. There will be Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, Hunter Mahan, Darren Clarke, Sergio Garcia, John Daly, Schwartzel, Ishikawa, Oosthuizen, Jaidee and the rest so get on down. We have loads of free passes so come on down and just ask for some, thanks to the Pattaya Sports Club!
Monday, Nov. 26, Green Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Mark Wood (10) 40pts
2nd Henry O’Brien (21) 38pts
3rd Jeff Cordeiro (9) 38pts
4th Martin Zimmerman (16) 37pts
The usual suspects were on the leaderboard for this week’s outing to Green Valley. Mark Wood has played here 438 times and should know every bump and bunker well. His 40 points took him to the top of the heap so well played mate, good to see you back on top! Henry the O’Brien and Mr. Jeff Cordeiro shared runner up positions whilst Martin Zimmerman was once again right up there, just like last week.
Tuesday, Nov. 27, Kabinburi (Yellow tees) – Stableford
1s Bryan Carroll (16) 30pts
2nd Ian Brimble (8) 29pts

Some of the players on the Kabinburi Road Trip.

Wednesday, Nov. 28, Kabinburi (Yellow tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (12) 37pts
2nd Bryan Carroll (16) 36pts
Another Road Trip and this time it was Kabinburi. If you have never been there before, this is a great little getaway and just over a 2 hour drive from Pattaya. The Kantary Hotel is a 5-star venue, and the Kabinburi Sports Club is a fine track in outstanding condition.
Bryan Carroll was the star of the show on this trip as he turned in a first and a second for the 2 day comp. The first round was a 15 hole event, due to a few Thai Generals taking their time on a near 6 hour round that saw the dark overcome us. The second day we were off at 7:30, so we breezed through a 4 hour round just the way it should be. T.I.T. as they say. Congrats to Bryan, Ian and Phil for a well played comp.
Remember, most of the Thais we meet on the golf course are high ranking police, military or politicians of some sort, so it is best to control ones temper as we are guests here in Thailand, as frustrating as that may be at times. Golf is much more of a social event for them and they often play as a 6-ball.

Tai with Bryan Carroll.

Friday, Nov. 30, Bangpra (White tees) – Monthly Medal
1st Ian Brimble (8) net 73
2nd Chaten Patel (12) net 75
3rd Arlen Wardene (26) net 76
Bangpra is not the easiest course for a Monthly Medal, but it is good to have a real test of golf once in a while. Her reputation for lightning fast greens was upheld, and everyone had a 3-putt green or two.
Ian Brimble has been in the frame consistently over the last couple of weeks now, so it was not entirely a surprise when he pulled off another victory to finish off his stay in Pattaya for this trip. He thought he blew it at the last 3 holes, as he finished with 3 bogeys! Chaten must have thought he was in there for another star on his shirt, but Ian stayed the course and took the top of the podium once again. It couldn’t have gone to a nicer guy, have a good trip back mate and see you on your next trip out.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.golfclubpattaya.com  and for more information mail us: [email protected]  and see updates at www.facebook.com/golfclubpattaya.

Skinner shines at Green Valley

IPGC golf from The Links

Sunday, Nov. 25, Green Valley – Stableford
The group managed to complete their Sunday round for the first time this season, in almost perfect golfing conditions.
There was a four-way tie for third place on 32 points, but fortunately for the scorer all golfers involved had different back 9’s, so the tie break was not too difficult to work out. First to fall was Andy Galvin (14), followed by John Wood (15) and Alec Hoare (17), which left Frank McGowan with yet another podium finish, after coming home strongly with 19 points after only managing 13 on the front 9.
Charlie Lapsey took second place, his best round in Thailand for some time earning him 38 points, but he was still some way behind the winner, Peter Skinner, who played some outstanding golf to shoot a gross 76 for 42 points.
There were no ‘2’s, and with a day off on Tuesday for the PAGS, the kitty rolled over to Treasure Hill on Thursday.
1st Peter Skinner (10) 42pts
2nd Charlie Lapsey (9) 38pts
3rd Frank McGowan (17) 32pts
Thursday, Nov. 29, Treasure Hill – Stableford
We travelled up to Treasure Hill today with some trepidation, partly because of the likelihood of the heavy rain during the week rendering the course unplayable, and partly because of the adverse reports we had heard regarding the condition of the course, relating to the ongoing improvement works on the green aprons.
We were pleasantly surprised on both counts, with the fairways firm and offering some run, and the works around the greens, although not finished, did not affect play, and with ‘clean and place’ in operation, there was no need to use the drop zones which are no longer compulsory. Unfortunately, we were not surprised about the incompetence of the ineffective starter, who allowed a 6-ball, followed by an un-booked group of 8 to start ahead of us in our allotted time, leading to a near 5 hour round.
Given the expected conditions, we decided in the car on the way up to play off the shorter yellow tees, but this was forgotten by the time we finally got to the 1st tee, and we automatically followed the previous groups off the whites. Scoring proved difficult, with none of the group shooting their handicaps around the tough track - Jon Batty going closest with 35 points, despite only managing 3 points on the final 3 holes. Garry Barling was second on 30 points, with Jorn Ericksen a further point back in third.
Jon Batty had the only ‘2’ of the day on the short 6th.
1st Jon Batty (9) 35pts
2nd Garry Barling (7) 30pts
3rd Jorn Ericksen (21) 29pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao at 10.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9.45am for Green Valley every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule of courses can be found on the IPGC website.

Lovgreen wins back-to-back

PSC golf from Café Kronborg

Monday, Nov. 26, Plutaluang E&S – Stableford
We were off to the Royal Thai Navy Plutluang, down south for a 45 minute transit. The usual fast check-in enabled us to get off the East 1 tee 20 minutes early under overcast skies and humid conditions. The course on the day was in good condition but very wet as the wet season is unseasonably back, conditions that I have not seen here before despite being a resident for 22 years.
Back in the clubhouse after a round of 4 hours and 20 minutes a welcome went out to Hugh O’Donnel, back from Spain and California, while goodbyes were said to Arne Max Pedersen and Lottie Boskov, back to Denmark but returning early in the new year when they need defrosting.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 21 and scores were not good due to the wet conditions and the white tees pushed back.
Jan Lovgreen won the A Flight with 34 points, Arne Max Pederson returned 33 points for second and Daryl Evans took third ahead of Mike Winfield in fourth.
Mick O’Connor won the B Flight with 33 points, Graham Buckingham was second on 29, Jens Erik Nielsen took third with 28 and Kurt Sandgaard was fourth on a count back from Henny Nielsen, both on 27 points.
A Flight (0-21)
1st Jan Lovgreen (21) 34pts
2nd Arne Max Pedersen (15) 33pts
3rd Daryl Evans (20) 32pts
4th Mike Winfield (21) 31pts
B Flight (22+)
1st Mick O’Connor (22) 33pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (23) 29pts
3rd Jens Erik Nielsen (25) 28pts
4th Kurt Sandgaard (36) 27pts
Thursday, Nov. 29, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
It was off to our old friend Pattaya Country Club on Thursday, last visited in March before the renovation. A journey of 23 minutes and as usual we were greeted by Jenny and her friendly staff with a very efficient check-in. We got off the first tee 40 minutes early under overcast skies and wet conditions underfoot. The front nine was very wet with a lot of grass not being cut due to the recent weather.
The newly refurbished back nine was a pleasure to play and even bone dry; it has the look and feel of the Siam Old Course with humps and hollows on the greens. I played this nine when it first opened in November of 1996 and what we played today beats it by a mile, although there are some things to be done like getting the yardage markers in the right places, but mostly everybody liked it and we will be back the end of December.
One flight today won by Jan Lovgreen with a nice 39 points ahead of Mike Winfield in second with 37, Mike Allidi, Brian Noguer fourth and Leif Kirkgaard edging fifth spot on a count back over Kurt Sandgaard.
1st Jan Lovgreen (21) 39pts
2nd Mike Winfield (21) 37pts
3rd Mike Allidi (2) 36pts
4th Brian Noguer (22) 33pts
5th Leif Kirkgaard (16) 32pts
Note: If you are looking for a game of golf, call Dave at 083 602 2117 or email [email protected]. Remember we are into the high season so sign up early.

Pink is the colour... Polo is the game

La Boheme hold up the trophy after winning the 2012 Pink Polo tournament at Thai Polo Club.

Elfi Seitz
After the rescheduling of the Queen’s Cup St. Regis Pink Polo tournament, which originally should have taken place in February this year, Saturday, November 17 was finally the date chosen for the event to be held at the Thai Polo Club in Pattaya.
Some changes were made this year, like the admission charge being raised up from 500 to 1,000 baht and there was no buffet either, but high-tea and of course beer, soft drinks, and sparkling wine were all still available. At the end of the day, everyone was still happy with this arrangement as the concept behind Pink Polo is not about what you can receive but whom you can help with the money raised.
Following on from tradition, this 4th Pink Polo tournament featured only women teams who all took to the field wearing something in pink; this being the color that represents the fight against breast cancer worldwide. All the proceeds of the tournament and donations will go to the Queen Sirikit Center for breast cancer and the visitors who came to see the spectacular polo-games played a part in contributing to help women who aren’t able to afford the expensive operations or treatment against this illness.
Before the polo games begun, a fashion show from La Martina was held with models sitting on horseback paraded before the spectators. This fashion show, featuring sports apparel, is a tradition for this event too and many celebrities took part.

Getting into the spirit of things on Pink Polo Day.

There was also entertainment for children, who got the chance to play and ride with ponies, and in the pavilion of the sponsor where games were prepared for them.
The honored guests amongst those in attendance included the German Ambassador, Rolf Schulze, the German Consul in Chiang Mai, Hagen Dirksen and his wife, and former German Ambassador Andreas von Stechow who all spent a good time together and enjoyed the on and off field activities.
The official part of the day was opened with a polo game for children, followed by the main attraction. Punctually, at 2:30 p.m., the female ‘gladiators’ entered the field led by two luxury cars, providing a spectacular start to the tournament. After several hours of non-stop action on the polo field, the “La Boheme” team emerged as this year’s champions and they were applauded off the park on their way to the presentation ceremony where they were awarded the prestigious Queen Sirikit Cup.
Once again the organizers, namely the two owners of the Thai Polo Club, Nunthinee Tanner and Harald Link, as well as the founder and director of the Queen Sirikit Center for breast cancer, Dr. Kris Chatamra, and his wife Khunying Finola, and the tournament sponsors all played a huge part in making 2012 Pink Polo another resounding success.

Even the horses dressed up for the occasion.

Action from the final as La Boheme take on St. Regis.

‘Yutakarnnava’ team wins Pattaya long boat title

The longboats had to battle tough conditions on finals day.

Phasakorn Channgam
Thailand’s oarsmen proved dominant at the 12th Pattaya Traditional Long Boat Tournament held at Mabprachan Lake over the weekend 17-18 November. Some 28 boats participated in this year’s event with teams from as far afield as Indonesia, Malaysia, Myamar, Cambodia, Macau and Laos all flying in to take part.
A family atmosphere was promoted by the organizers with no alcohol on sale to spectators at the race venue; however while spectators may have been dry on the inside this certainly wasn’t the case on the outside as the event was marred by driving rain that persisted all weekend.
Out on the lake, the boats were tossed about in the squall like conditions and some even overturned, but it didn’t stop the races from going ahead and all the participating teams were given great support by the enthusiastic crowd.
In the blue ribbon race – the large boat (55 oars) category - the winner was the Yutakarnnava boat of Sattahip navy, winning the HRH Princess Sirindhorn Cup along with 100,000 baht in prize money. They were followed across the line by the Tapfahthanarat boat from Pitsanulok.
The large boat B race was sewn up by teams from the Isaan region with Saosuay Supapron from Roi-ed crossing the tape first ahead of Jao Khunnen from Nakhon Pathom.
The Tepprathanporn squad, also from Nakhon Pathom, took out the smaller boat (30 oars) category A race to capture the HRH Princess Somsawali Cup and 50,000 baht while Sao Muangphet from Phetburi filled the second step on the podium.
The B race was won by the Jaomae Luangjan boat from Chanthaburi who collected a 10,000 baht cash prize.
Thailand occupied the top two places in the International race, first place and 50,000 baht going to the Thai A squad while their understudies in the B team followed close behind. Third and fourth places went to Cambodia and Laos respectively.

Dodgers take bragging rights from the Kids

PSC Softball Sunday

Tyler’s “Dodgers” and Jerry’s “Kids” line up for a group photo prior to their 3-game shootout.

Rodney Thomas
A record crowd turned out to see Sunday’s contest between Tyler’s “Dodgers” vs. Jerry’s “Kids” on November 25. It was a 3-game series that saw softball at its best, showcasing some brilliant defense and smart batting.
We saw the return of the great “Beck”, flown in from the Japanese major leagues and in toe was all star second baseman Terry, who turned in a great performance both on offense and defense with several acrobatic catches and a relay throw to Beck at third base to take away my triple. But it was Ricky Z who would claim the game’s MVP as he showed glimpses of the glory days. Playing shortstop for the “Dodgers”, Rick came up with great play after great play with some fantastic glove work and throws, including several double plays to help secure many 1-2-3-and out innings against the “Kids”.
Games 1 and 2 were won by the “Dodgers” while the “Kids” battled back late and took game 3. A big thanks to Rick Smith for his tireless efforts to pitch both ways in a very fair and balanced competition, and who by the way made several of his signature up-the-middle catches on liners hit at the mound.

Ocean Marina Boat Show:A seaboard maritime magnet

Dignitaries and event organizers pose for a group photo at the opening of the first Ocean Marina Boat Show.

Peter Cummins

PIt was, indeed, a splendid exposition of all things maritime, as the Ocean Marina Yacht Club and Ocean Property Company, displayed an enormous range of nautical accoutrements at the splendid marina waters-side complex at Na Jomtien.
For three days, from Nov. 23-25 in the first-ever Eastern Seaboard boat show, the expansive property was completely covered with craft, fittings and everything possible to “put people on the water”. The exhibition ran the gamut from sleek sloops to kevlar kayaks; it catered to aficionados of wind surfing to wake boarding, from sail-boats to speed-boats and everything in between.
Huge crowds packed the facilities, even though a battle for supremacy raged out on the Gulf, with the south-westerly monsoons still dominating the up-coming north-easterlies; the former winning the day, bucketing frequent rain-storms onto the scene. As one drenched enthusiast noted: “So what? This is all about the sea, the water and the marine environment”, as he purchased his dream boat.
And, speaking of dream boats, George Foose’s newly-imported Tartan 4000, a magnificent US-built sloop, aptly named “Dream” was a dominating feature among the on-water exhibits.
Scott Finsten, Ocean Marina Yacht Club Manager and Harbour Master of the facilities, was most enthusiastic about the event, noting, “people came from near and far, from all over Thailand and from the region, to look, browse and buy from the huge range of artifacts on display.” This is just the beginning, said Scott and “we can look forward to bigger and better boat shows in future”.

A James Bond pleasure cruiser?

Another enthusiastic voice was that of “Man-about-the-Gulf” Bill Gasson who sees the boat show as a great benefit to the development of marine leisure sports along the Eastern Seaboard. As the man who has inaugurated numerous regattas along Thailand’s splendid coast-lines, Bill sees a direct influence on his forthcoming 9th Top of the Gulf Regatta, to be sailed off the Ocean Marina in early May next year.
There was something for everyone at the boat show, whether buyers, exhibitors or simply day strollers enjoying the splendid ambience, fresh air and excitement of the event.
There were over 60 exhibits on shore and some 20 more afloat in the Marina bay. There were outboard and inboard engines, scuba equipment, diving, fishing and related paraphernalia and even sunset cruises provided free of charge for the adventurous/romantic and other types.
There were free demonstrations and hands-on operations for many of the craft on display and the huge crowds availed themselves of the opportunity to experience the sea – many for the first time.
And, of course, being a marine ambience, there were liberal drafts of Singha beer, served on the lawns by the lovely Singha ladies, resplendent in gold – or, should that read “amber” outfits.
It was a superb maritime fest and, with Pattaya City Mayor, the city fathers and the private sector strongly supporting the event, the Ocean Marina Boat Show did – and will continue to do - much to promote Pattaya as a “maritime magnet” and the place for clean family fun, year round.

Montebello Charters takes passengers onboard for a free sunset cruise.

The Tartan 4000 was once of the star exhibits at the show.

Heather Watson and Sorana Cirstea join PTT Pattaya Open

Sorana Cirstea.
Two rising tennis stars, British No 1 Heather Watson and Romanian No1 Sorana Cirstea have confirmed their participation in next month’s 2013 PTT Pattaya Open, WTA tennis tournament at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya from 27 January – 3 February.
20 year old Heather Watson recently became the first British woman in 24 years to win a WTA title, when she triumphed in Osaka in October. Her win took her into the top 50 and she is looking forward to her 2nd trip to Pattaya. “I love Pattaya as a tournament and as a city, the people are warm and welcoming and I am really happy to be returning in 2013”.
Sorana Cirstea is a couple of years older than Watson and already has accumulated 5 WTA titles. On her first visit to Pattaya this year reached the semi-final before falling to Maria Kirilenko. She has continued her good form throughout the year and finished the year ranked No 27 in the world. Like Watson she is looking forward to returning to Pattaya. “This year was my first time playing in Pattaya and it’s one of my favourite tournaments, it’s such a different environment from the Australian Open where everyone is stressed and then we got to this amazing place where everyone is so welcoming. So I enjoyed my time here.”
Watson and Cirstea join a line-up of star players including Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, Maria Kirilenko and Vera Zvonareva of Russia and Sabine Lisicki of Germany.
With entries for the tournament not closing until 17 December, many more leading tennis players are expected to join the PTT Pattaya Open which is celebrating its 22nd anniversary in 2013, making it one of the longest running tournaments on the WTA calendar.
The 16-draw qualifying competition will be held on 27 – 28 January 2013, with main draw matches commencing on 28 January with play starting from 15.00 daily, excepting the semi-finals on Saturday 02 February and the finals on Sunday 03 February, when play begins at 16.00.

Picnic races at Bira this weekend

Dr Iain Corness
The final Nitto 3K race meeting for 2012 is being held at the Bira Circuit (Highway 36) on December 8 and 9. These events are ‘picnic races’ and are fairly laid back and low key, though the driving is just as cut and thrust as that in the more professional categories.
Cars racing include the Isuzu Pick-up challenge, Thailand touring cars, the Retro series and more.
And if you want to really make a picnic of it, join us in the AA Insurance Brokers / Sausage King hospitality tent on Sunday where we offer cold drinks, some shade, seats and a sausage sizzle courtesy of the Sausage King. The tent is on the outside of the hairpin at the end of the straight and has good views of the cars going through that corner and up the hill, then down the back through the difficult and dangerous sweeping right hander.
To find us, come into the circuit via the back gate leading to the pits, about 200 meters on the left before approaching the main entrance off Highway 36 coming from the Satahip end. Go through the tunnel under the track and then turn immediately hard right and follow the dirt road around the outside of the corner and up the incline and look for the red AA hospitality tent. Say the magic words “Securitas Mk1 Escort” and you’re in!
