Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvaree slams Cambodia’s temple damage claim as “a distortion of facts,” reaffirming Thailand’s adherence to international law.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Army has rejected Cambodian accusations that it damaged the Preah Vihear Temple, calling the claim a clear distortion of the facts.

Army Spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree today addressed reports that Cambodia had sent a letter to UNESCO. The letter reportedly alleged that Thai artillery fire had caused damage to the historic temple site.

The army clarified that its military responses are aimed specifically and solely at Cambodian military positions. Officials stated that civilian areas and non-military sites are not targeted, and that the temple is not in the line of fire of any Thai weapons. The spokesperson described the Cambodian claim as a clear distortion of the facts, consistent with other attempts to spread disinformation.

The Royal Thai Army reaffirmed its commitment to operating cautiously under international and humanitarian law to protect the nation’s sovereignty without harming non-combatants or their property. (NNT)
