Thailand and Japan have signed a cooperation agreement to expand collaboration in space technology, including low Earth orbit satellite development.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat, together with Japanese Ambassador to Thailand Masato Otaka, witnessed the signing of a memorandum of cooperation on June 24 between Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to expand bilateral collaboration in space technology. The memorandum was signed by MHESI Permanent Secretary Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul and METI Vice Minister Takehiko Matsuo following Cabinet approval on June 23.

The memorandum is the result of joint research into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations and how Japan’s expertise can support Thailand’s adoption of this technology. Both countries will also assess future collaborative projects, with the research expected to support industrial development, national security, and practical applications that improve daily life. The framework also provides for collaboration among Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Japan’s space industry, enabling all parties to exchange technical information, collect data, and produce joint reports to guide future activities.
