At a May 31 meeting with 20 advocacy groups, Minister Jiraporn Sindhuprai reported nearly 2,700 e-cigarette-related cases and pledged intensified enforcement to safeguard young people—highlighting the government’s commitment to building a smoke-free future.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister’s Office Minister Jiraporn Sindhuprai met with representatives from 20 anti-smoking and youth advocacy organizations at Government House on May 31 to mark World No Tobacco Day and review progress in the government’s crackdown on electronic cigarettes. The groups requested the meeting to express appreciation for the administration’s strong stance on protecting young people from e-cigarette use and to propose further steps for prevention.

Assigned by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to lead efforts on the issue, Minister Jiraporn reported that between February 26 and May 29, enforcement authorities launched 2,697 criminal cases related to illegal e-cigarette sales, seizing more than 2.1 million items worth nearly 484 million baht. Forty-two major cases have been referred to the Anti-Money Laundering Office, and over 8,400 public tips were submitted through the government’s Tang Rat mobile application.

During the meeting, organizations representing school parent networks, public health foundations, youth development groups, and social advocacy coalitions shared their views on how to reduce smoking among young people. Many urged the government to expand awareness campaigns, especially in schools, and revise laws to better protect students from exposure to tobacco.

Suggestions also included stricter enforcement near school zones, clearer packaging regulations, and increased penalties for vendors selling to minors. Attendees underscored the need for continued cooperation between civil society and public agencies to enhance long-term prevention strategies.

With seven months remaining in the year, the government anticipates an increase in enforcement actions. Minister Jiraporn reaffirmed the administration’s goal to build a healthier society by addressing emerging public health threats and maintaining strong protections for Thai youth.
