BANGKOK, Thailand – The government has ordered an investigation into allegations that some universities admitted foreign students through irregular practices, directing authorities to review academic programs and student visa procedures to close loopholes and protect the credibility of Thailand’s higher education sector. Deputy Government Spokesperson Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn said the action follows media reports raising concerns over foreign student admissions and the visa process. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation has instructed the ministry’s Office of the Permanent Secretary to carry out a comprehensive fact-finding inquiry.
Authorities will require the universities involved to explain their foreign student admission procedures, the administration of degree and non-degree programs, and visa applications. The review will examine the process from enrollment through visa approval to prevent identity fraud, misuse of student status, and other abuses. Patdarasm said the inquiry will be conducted impartially, and any university or individual found to have violated laws, regulations, or academic standards will face immediate legal action. (NNT)
