Phuket Province has launched strict traffic enforcement targeting rental vehicles used by foreign tourists, including license and IDP checks and inspections of rental businesses, as authorities vow zero tolerance in a coordinated effort to improve road safety for visitors and residents.

PHUKET, Thailand – In a comprehensive effort to ensure the safety of all road users, Phuket Province is rolling out stringent traffic enforcement measures specifically targeting rental vehicles operated by foreign tourists. This initiative reflects the province’s commitment to creating a safer environment for both visitors and residents alike.

Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn has announced a series of urgent measures designed to address growing concerns about traffic safety. Authorities will be establishing dedicated checkpoints throughout the province to carefully monitor rental vehicles and identify any violations of traffic laws. These checkpoints will serve as crucial intervention points where officials can assess driving behavior and ensure compliance with local regulations.

A key focus of this campaign is the verification of proper documentation. Foreign tourists will be required to present valid driver’s licenses along with International Driving Permits (IDP), ensuring that only qualified individuals are operating vehicles on Phuket’s roads. This measure aims to prevent incidents caused by unfamiliarity with local driving conditions or a lack of proper credentials.

The crackdown extends beyond individual drivers to include rental establishments themselves. Authorities will be conducting thorough inspections of car rental shops, and any businesses found to be operating in violation of regulations will face immediate legal consequences. This comprehensive approach ensures accountability at every level of the rental vehicle ecosystem.

The Governor has emphasized that enforcement will be unwavering: “The law will be applied strictly, with no leniency and no exceptions.” This clear message underscores the seriousness of the initiative and the province’s determination to protect lives on its roads.

The success of this campaign relies on seamless collaboration between multiple agencies, including the Police Department, Transport Department, and Provincial Administration. This integrated approach ensures comprehensive coverage and effective implementation of all safety measures.

This initiative represents Phuket’s proactive stance on road safety, demonstrating that the province is serious about creating a secure environment where tourists can enjoy their visit without compromising their own or others ‘ safety. (PRD)
