BANGKOK, Thailand – The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) is coordinating with all relevant agencies to closely monitor the flood situation in the Nan River Basin, accelerating drainage and restoration efforts while issuing warnings for the upper northern region to prepare for heavy accumulated rainfall expected from August 23 to 24. Paitoon Kengkarnchang, deputy secretary-general and spokesperson of the ONWR, chaired a joint meeting online on August 21 to track the flood response in Nan province.
Despite the recent improvement, joint weather forecasts from the Thai Meteorological Department and the Hydro-Informatics Institute indicate that a low-pressure area will continue to bring heavy local rain to parts of northern and northeastern Thailand. A new wave of rainfall is expected to hit the upper Nan River Basin between August 23 and 24, with heightened vigilance required for accumulated rainfall and repeat downpours in Nan’s Pua, Tha Wang Pha, Thung Chang, Chiang Klang, Wiang Sa, Mae Charim, Santi Suk, Bo Kluea, and Chaloem Phra Kiat districts. Additional rainfall is projected to increase again from August 29 to September 1 across the upper North and Northeast, prompting the ONWR to instruct central and local agencies to prepare comprehensive response plans.
