CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Minister of Culture Sabeeda Thaised has inspected cultural heritage sites in Chiang Mai as the province prepares for an international evaluation in support of its UNESCO World Heritage nomination. Experts from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) will visit from August 3 to 8, 2026. ICOMOS advises the UNESCO World Heritage Committee on cultural heritage nominations.
The minister reviewed the cultural landscape and community-based management at four key locations: Chang Phueak Gate, Tha Phae Gate, Wat Chiang Man, the city’s first temple, and Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan. Improvement work is underway across all eight heritage components included in the nomination. Most landscaping and site preparations are nearly complete.
Remaining work includes removing graffiti, reorganizing electrical cabinets, and improving advertising signs within the old city. Chiang Mai Municipality is working with private businesses to adjust signs and structures so they better blend with the historic surroundings. Public information materials will be displayed at Chiang Mai International Airport to help visitors understand the significance of the nominated cultural landscape. Relevant agencies are preparing to assist the visiting experts and demonstrate Chiang Mai’s ability to conserve and manage its cultural heritage in cooperation with local communities. (NNT)
