BANGKOK, 6 July 2015 – The Deputy Defense Minister has insisted that the government is nobody’s enemy and everyone can express their political views as long as they do not break the law.

Army Chief and Deputy Defense Minister General Udomdej Sitabutr said the government had been gentle with 14 college students who have been detained after breaking the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s rules.

According to Gen. Udomdej, the government is not against anybody, and that the students are like children to them. He further added that it was important for the authorities to resort to using the law as these students had been told many times not to stage any protest.

He expounded that they had to be detained because their gathering would attract more protesters, which could lead to a massive demonstration and political violence.
