SURAT THANI, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has visited Koh Phangan in Surat Thani province to direct action against foreign nationals operating businesses through nominee arrangements, calling for stricter enforcement and a broad review of unlawful activities in the area.

During the visit, Anutin met with provincial officials, security agencies, and residents, stressing the need to address practices affecting local livelihoods and economic fairness in tourism areas. The premier said business operations must comply with Thai law while balancing the need to welcome visitors with the protection of opportunities for local communities.

Authorities are verifying land ownership and business structures to identify nominee arrangements, as well as measures to maintain public order and enforce immigration regulations. Enforcement data showed cases under laws related to foreign labor, narcotics, immigration, and business ownership, with legal action underway against those involved.

Anutin also detailed development plans for the island, including improving water supply systems, supporting healthcare services, and promoting clean energy such as solar power and electric vehicles. The prime minister said the island has the potential to develop into a low-pollution destination while preserving its natural environment and supporting sustainable tourism.

Koh Phangan will serve as a pilot area for addressing similar issues nationwide, supported by coordinated enforcement, shared data systems, and inter-agency cooperation. Efforts will continue to ensure legal compliance, protect local livelihoods, and maintain confidence in Thailand’s tourism sector. (NNT)
