BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Supamas Isarabhakdi has ordered an urgent investigation into substandard solar cell installation services following reports of equipment failures, fire risks, and losses exceeding 500,000 baht. Supamas directed the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) to inspect labeling on solar panels, inverters, and batteries sold nationwide. These products fall under label-control requirements that mandate clear and accurate information, with penalties for violations including fines and possible imprisonment.
Preliminary findings in one complaint indicated that the installer used substandard materials, altered the electrical system, and installed improper wiring, resulting in voltage drops, power outages, overheating, and increased fire risk. The affected consumer has filed a criminal case, and investigators have forwarded the matter to prosecutors.
Officials said the business promoted its services online, with contracts lacking clear equipment specifications, thereby limiting consumers’ ability to verify compliance with standards before installation. The OCPB is collecting additional information, considering legal action, and reviewing stricter controls for solar installation services, while coordinating with relevant agencies to enhance oversight. Authorities advised the public to verify product labels, certification standards, and documentation before purchase. Consumers facing unfair practices can file complaints through the OCPB hotline 1166, online platforms, or provincial service centers. (NNT)
