SATTAHIP, Thailand – Police in Sattahip arrested a suspected gold necklace snatcher just six hours after he allegedly robbed a 64-year-old woman returning from a funeral, recovering the stolen jewelry worth more than 200,000 baht. The robbery occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on July 23 near a grocery store on the road into Samae San. The victim, Wongduan Duangkaew, told police she had just left a cremation ceremony at Wat Chong Samae San and was riding her motorcycle to buy groceries when a man on another motorcycle pulled alongside and snatched her 3-baht gold necklace. A gold-framed Buddhist amulet attached to the necklace fell onto the road during the struggle.
Following the incident, Sattahip Police Station launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage that led officers to identify both the suspect and the white Honda Giorno motorcycle used in the crime. At around 10:30 p.m., approximately six hours after the robbery, investigators arrested 32-year-old Saifa Harinsalai, also known as “Ko Ban Chang,” at a hideout in Ban Chang, Rayong, after he had removed the motorcycle’s license plate in an attempt to avoid detection.
Police said the suspect confessed that he spotted the victim wearing a large gold necklace, turned his motorcycle around, and carried out the theft before fleeing to Rayong. After seeing his image circulated in the news, he attempted to evade capture but was tracked down by investigators.
The suspect also led police to clothing he had discarded in a nearby cassava field and to the stolen necklace, which he had hidden in a plastic bag at his girlfriend’s house. Officers recovered the jewelry as evidence. During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted he planned to sell the necklace to pay motorcycle loan installments and use part of the money to buy methamphetamine. He remains in police custody and has been handed over to investigators for legal proceedings.
