PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya City is moving ahead with plans to install covered shelters at nine elevated pedestrian crossings, most of them located along Sukhumvit Road, to better protect residents and visitors from the sun and rain while encouraging safer road crossings. Mayor Poramet Ngampichet recently inspected the project, saying the new roofs are intended to make Pattaya’s pedestrian overpasses more comfortable and convenient for daily use throughout the year.
Most of the shelters will be built on pedestrian bridges spanning Sukhumvit Road, one of Pattaya’s busiest highways, where thousands of residents, students, workers and tourists cross every day. The covered structures will provide shade during periods of intense heat and shelter during heavy rain, making the overpasses more attractive and practical to use. City officials said the project is part of Pattaya’s wider efforts to improve pedestrian safety and encourage people to use elevated crossings instead of attempting to cross busy traffic lanes at street level.
The initiative also supports the city’s ongoing program to modernize public infrastructure and improve accessibility for everyone travelling around Pattaya. Construction will cover a total of nine pedestrian overpasses, with the majority situated along Sukhumvit Road at key crossing points. Pattaya City is expected to announce the construction schedule and individual locations as work progresses.
